China Dragon in Chesterfield

I attended this restaurant last week while visiting family from Australia. Out of the 14 people who attended 9 of us were sick within 48 hours of eating. The whole evening felt rushed, abrupt and a general pushy service was provided throughout and it was in no way welcoming. I would advise choosing another restaurant where you pay for want and get a reasonable sized portion with a pleasant service.

Great food, nice atmosphere, friendly staff

After waiting nearly twice as long for the food to arrive (understand sometimes it can be busy) I found a bit of blue plastic in one of the items in the starter for 2. I rang to politely let them know, to be told this was impossible (oh so I was lying?) and they cannot and will not do anything about it.

Owner was rude. Took a 45 pound deposit. 5 pounds each. Booked for 10. One couldn’t attend. She said she told me this would be the case and the deposit would be kept, yet I have no recollection of this taking place. Took 5 pounds back for person that didn’t turn up even though the table was full. Food and waiting on staff were pleasant. Yet felt eyes were constantly watching. Before even ordered drinks, the lady believed to be owner came up to us and stated the table would be needed back at 8pm due to another party rudely. Won’t be returning in the future. Was very disappointing considering prior service at china dragon has always been good.

Love this place. Great food, great service, great price. Love it!

Phoning the order through was great because the person at the other end of the phone was knowledgeable and we could understand each other well. Me and my partner visited Friday evening for dinner. The food was absolutely lovely , all came out quick and hot. Everything was delicious and we especially enjoyed the duck with pancakes! The service couldn’t be faulted, all very attentive, hardworking and polite. Only shame was the rude table behind us, making horrible comments and being obnoxious towards the waitress. We heard them mention that was going to to leave a bad review so want to share that their comments would be completely untrue and need to look more at their own behaviours not the waitress trying to do her job!

Table of 5 booked. While eating starters staff kept coming to us asking why we aren’t eating, as we was all just chatting and having a minute. We left the ribs at the starters due to them being fatty and was complained at by staff for leaving waste. We was then hassled to order mains despite asking for more time. We’d been there about 20 minutes. We got up and left. Terrible customer service. Paid £25 each for a drink and the plate equating to £125 for a small course of starters. Very rude service. Asked if we could just pay for what we had ordered due to feeling uncomfortable. Food was nice but not worth the hassle from the staff.

Love this place. The food is always hot and tasty and with you being able to eat as much as you can for a set price is a great idea.

Tasteless freezer food , literally the only seasoning used is onion/salt . £19 per person - go elsewhere if you don't want to pay for food poisoning diahreah/sickness , Absolutely shocking service , The rude women waiting on has a very strange staring problem - hawk eying your every bite and snatching the unwashed plates from beneath you with a bitter face .PS Don't leave a crumb or you will be treated like scum .

Went above and beyond after forgetting our rice they came back really fast and were very apologetic and brought it back with a free bottle of Pepsi. Very good service

Had this place recommended to me by many people unfortunately you can’t dine here if you’re a single person. So I will have to keep wondering.

6 adults and three kids. The buffet menu was great. We had a few rounds of the starters, and everything we had was hot and tasty and plenty of it. The main meals were also very good. A good choice of chicken.pork.prawns beef. We tried at least one from each section. Hot and very tasty. The kids also had ice cream at an extra price, but it was worth it. First time here, but not the last time. We will be back

Called in last night for a mid week treat and we were not dissapointed. Just the two of us arrived around 7pm without a booking. They were pretty busy but after 5 minutes sat in the bar our table was ready. Probably worth booking next time to be sure. All the staff were lovely and friendly and the food was gorgeous. I couldn't get over how quickly the food was coming out, all freshly cooked and piping hot. I liked the Salt & Pepper wings especially, crispy and spicy. The portion sizes are small, but in a GOOD way, because you can pace yourself and get a good variety of dishes in. I wanted to take more pictures but I got too into the eating! Will definitely be going back!

Set price small portion menu but you can re order as much as you like.

Absolutely disgraceful service, we explained to be on the safe side that we had a peanut allergy. They never asked us and to that and they said we could not eat there. They said we should have told them when we booked, explained they never asked and on the menu it states to simply inform them when you order. They was really rude about this and acted as if this was a fault of our own. We asked if it was possible just to use a different pan as they said they cooked everything in the same pan. This was not possible. Following telling them we wouldn’t be able to eat there they were really rude, for no reason at all. We have never had this issue in another restaurant. Not even a discount on the drinks to apologise. Also good job we didn’t eat the prawn crackers they put on the table… are you trying to kill us? Haha! Birthday ruined.

Used to love this place and used to be reasonably priced but 7 of us went last night and it was disappointing. They have put the prices up yet reduced the menu so three of the dishes we normally order had been taken off. One of which was seaweed!! What Chinese doesn’t do seaweed ? Found dishes were more bland and portion sizes even smaller. I get they dont want food waste but it was embarrassing keep asking for more of the same dish. Ordered mixed platter of starters and not enough of everything - you would assume they’d bring out 7 of everything but they only provided a few of each. Daughter had missed wings off her starter order and later asked for them and she was refused being as we had already ordered mains (even though they hadn’t even arrived at the table). What difference did it make as all you can eat anyway so left a sour taste to the experience.

Very busy and seemed very disorganised especially at the bar. Only had one draughty lager on which was not the best. Good food but service was a little slow.

My daughter took me here for mother's day meal and it was absolutely beautiful and the service was wonderful! Thank you China Dragon we will be returning soon! The crispy Chicken In lemon sauce and the roast pork in honey sauce is amazing and so was the unlimited starters! For all that we ate it came to around £23 each which included drinks. Only slight criticism, which is just personal preference, wish there was option of dessert, which my daughter who has autism is in a routine of when go out for meals.

I'm assuming the ownership has changed of late. This used to be amazing now it's very average. Firstly they've cut the choices in half, no soup, none of the spicy dishes that I used to love. No salt and pepper chicken, no seaweed......I could go on. This will be the last time we visit, a shame as it was always our go too.

First time tried this restaurant ... certainly won't be the last as very pleased with the food and service. Would have given it full five stars but drinks were too expensive.

We travled from Sheffield and was abit sceptical due to previous reviews but honestly we walked away happy and said we will definitely return, yes potion sizes are small but we thought this was actually a good idea so you could have the choices of more dishes and try more things without wasting it Only minor thing we would say is there is not just one person sticking to serving one table. But overall I would definitely recommend to people and was well worth travelling!! Even my 3 children loved it.

I used to recommend this to everyone, food has gone down hill massively your allocated 2hours and they either take 40 mins to bring the main courses or don't bother at all. It's no longer worth the money as portion sizes are just enough to fill a toddler.

For all the years of getting a meal from China Dragon tonight I was so disappointed by the meal . I think it's changed hands and I won't be using them again wish is sad say.

Just had our first takeaway and Wow, it was gorgeous. Large potions, fast delivery and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend.

Food was lovely and cooked to order. The only problem was it was so cold in there we were eating with our coats on.

Love it here been coming for many years service good and food lovely however some things are missing from menu and portions smaller but the main issue for my review is to advise customers to take a nice thick jumper as it was freezing - we were all sat with coats on this spoilt the evening and there was no sign of christmas.

Ordered a meal for 2 people on a Saturday night, our order was taken with no delivery time given. 2 hours later and our food was still not delivered. We rang the restaurant numerous times and we were advised our food was only just cooking almost 2 hours after ordering a small set meal for 2. Will not be using the restaurant again, very poor service. Would have appreciated them to tell us how long the food would be as we placed our order so we could go elsewhere. Wouldn’t recommend using them.

When you walk up to the premises and in the building, you do not expect the food to be so amazing! Yes it looks a bit tired, but I have visited the China Dragon many times, and I have never been disappointed with the food! For a set fee, you can pick anything you want off the menu and you can eat as much as you can! Indigestion remedies for afterwards is a must, because you will want to try everything on the menu. The staff who work there are all very friendly and accommodating too. We will be back soon!

Firstly I can't fault the service always smiling anything to help. The food is just sooo boring no seaweed no mussels there just isn't any variations on the menu. When this place first started it was 4/5 star without a doubt now tho I'd give it a ok 3 only because of the good service.

Lovely all you can eat chinese food made freshly cooked to order. The portions are really small, so order more than one portion if you want to share a dish. The menu has changed since we last went, they no longer do crispy seaweed or foo yung dishes and you can't order starters at the same time as mains which we used to like to do. The chow mein also doesn't come in sauce anymore so it's not great. Cost about £20 each to eat in on a Friday evening. I recommend takeaway rather than eating in as the menu has/had better choices like chow mein in sauce and the portion sizes were good (unless the takeaway menu has changed as well - hope not) Service was fast but we felt rushed and watched and there weren't many smiles from all of the staff. The lady who has been there years was lovely as usual.

Piping hot food salt and pepper chicken is the best I’ve had!!

Every time i drive past, it's full. I know why now, we ordered a takeaway last night and it was hands down the best we've had.

The satay chicken skewers, crispy chilli beef and salt and pepper prawns were incredible! Overall an amazing experience and we will definitely be attending again soon!

I’ve been to China Dragon years ago. The food seems to have got better. The fact it’s all you can eat, and the reasonable price, you honestly can’t beat it. Great service too. Small portions so you can try a bit of everything. Minor issue being the fact you can’t order starter and mains at the same time (didn’t used to be this way) which is frustrating when other members of the table aren’t ready for mains but others are, or you want to go and get some more tea smoked chicken starter during your mains which shouldn’t be a problem.

Food not bad but so slow its a joke, I assume they do this to restrict what you can order. We had been there two hours and still had not received all our main course order!

Other reviewers are stating they serve small portions, this is true but what they are failing to tell us is they will bring out more of the same as many times as you wish, it’s a clever way of doing things because your food is always fresh, The food here is the best you’ll find anywhere in the area, The girls who serve you are polite and friendly nothing is to much trouble! I wish others reviews would tell the truth! 5 minutes after taking my photos the restaurant was heaving with customers. I’ve been coming here for 10 years so that speaks for itself.

I recently ordered take-away from this Chinese restaurant and it was amazing! The food was so good, I couldn't stop eating. The staff were really nice and made the ordering process easy. One of my favorite dishes was the Kung Pao chicken, it had a nice kick to it. The fried rice was also really good, it was crispy and delicious. We also ordered some dumplings, they were so tasty. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for some good Chinese food for take-away. The food and service were great and I'll definitely be ordering from them again!

Wow fabulous Chinese food. The outside looks ok nothing spectacular, but please venture in. Open the front door and there is a tiny reception area that opens into a large room with tables set nicely and staff very busy waiting tables. You must book as this little diamond is super popular with people that know it. We booked a table for 4 which we were shown to immediately. Our drinks order was taken within 5 minutes and appeared straight away. We placed our starter order again it came super quickly, hot plates too. Oh my goodness I had tea smoked chicken in a light batter it was delicious. Then chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce and then pork in honey, yummy. Everything is cooked to order but no long waits. Forget piles of grey bean sprouts and loads of rice! Portions are sufficient so no wastage. If you want more you order more. We had chips and rice (Joyce) 😊. £18 a head and you have the table for 2 hours. We will definitely go again.

We've just been for the first time after driving past daily for years! The food was amazing! Fresh, well cooked, hot, delicious! It is exceptional value for money and service was outstanding, we will definitely be returning! Tips for first timers- portions are small but you can order as much as you like so you can try a bit of everything, we found them to be the perfect size.. book a table! It is a small restaurant and very busy

Delicious food, all comes out piping hot and in smaller portion sizes which is ideal for trying lots of different dishes. The service is outstanding, staff were so friendly and attentive.

Managed to get a group of 4 of us in even though they were quite busy, food was really hot and tasty, starters came out thick and fast although when we changed to mains it was a little slow(understandable being busy). Personally £16.90 for all you can eat is good value and not a bad word to say about any of it!

I’ve only been here twice, but they were the two best Chinese meals I have ever had. The staff were friendly and efficient, attentive without being intrusive. I especially liked the fact that the portions were smaller than in other places, which meant we could try more things. I shall definitely be going back.

Ordered the takeaway for the first time. Ribs were very fatty (ribs are hit & miss) so I wasn't surprised. Chicken chow mein noodles were amazing, but chicken was slimy. Chips were good, curry sauce amazing, chicken balls good. Would definitely order again.

Food arrived cold when phoned to complain they were argumentative and basically called me a fibber won’t refund as they need to collect to check what we have eaten

We booked and arrived looking forward to a lovely eveming with our family. We had been before and were unhappy with the all you can eat deal as it was very expensive for what we ate. We intended to order from the proper menu but unfortunately it turns out this is the only restaurant that doesn't have one. Undeterred, and happy to be out for the evening, we agreed to the all you can eat but after an issue last time mentioned that our little girl would just like a potion of chips. This was a problem! She was still going to be charged for a full buffet. The manager/owner was consulted and 'the kid still pays'. You may think this is a miss quotation, but this is what he said. We paid for pur drinks and left. I could double the length of this review talking about the elasticated seat covers hiding the grotty chair or the super fast demand for our order on arrival.

The food here is always wonderful and I cannot fault the food. There is a one way valve - once you've had the starters you move onto the main menu but there is no going back. You might fancy something on the starter list to go with your main dishes but its a no. - doesn't take away from the 5* though

I order from this place every week for delivery and the food is usually very nice. Each time the order is £30. However tonight half way through my order they decide to tell me the kitchen is closed at 10:15 as they shut at 11 and everyone has gone home. I said its only just 10:15 now and i can clearly hear noise from customers in the background so how are you closed and why have you just taken my order?? The reply was “ sorry we are closed”. Ok no problem i wont be ordering again now out of principal. I could understand if i lived miles away but I'm down the road!!! One lost and unhappy ex customer!!!!

We nearly cancelled our booking due to some of the bad reviews on here but we are so very glad we didn’t as the food and atmosphere was really good. We were there for our sons 15th birthday. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The decor is a little tired and could definitely do with make over but the food and service was great. We visited on a Wednesday and we couldn’t believe how busy the place was, barely a spare table in the restaurant which tells you they’re doing well. All of the food was top quality, freshly cooked to order and piping hot. A special mention to the terrific ladies who were serving us tonight on how lovely Smiley and kind they were with us and our children nothing was too much trouble and they really made us feel welcome. We will be 100% be returning. I would say compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area it’s worthy of five stars.

We have previously eaten at this restaurant a number of times. And had always been so so overwhelmed with the standard of the food & presentation. We had not visited for a while & decided to visit on a Tuesday evening a number of weeks ago. And unfortunately we were so UNDERWHELMED. The food was poorly presented, although edible. But not to the usual standard! And seemed like a lot of the food was deep fried. The restaurant opening time was billed as 5 pm. We & others were left in the cold until 5:20 pm. I would say as always when we have visited. The waiting staff at the tables are amazing, however, at this present time the foods isn't! Please up your game.

My husband and I went to this restaurant on Thursday night with 6 others and can honestly say it was lovely, the staff were attentive , the food was lovely and plentiful. The rules have changed slightly it is still all you can eat but now once you have moved on to main courses you can’t go back to the starter menu . The portions are small but you can order as many as you wish and the food is always cooked fresh and piping hot .. we did have a bad experience once before covid when the staff were rude and made you feel as though you were begging for food but this now seems to have been resolved . Glad we gave it one last try as we will now defo return
