Hakalok in Welwyn Hatfield

Used to order from here and it used to be good. But ordered food last night and me and my mother were disgusted. Sambal prawns tasted bitter and were inedible, they also had raw Okra in it. The beef rendang was also so salty that it was inedible and we had to bin it. The beef ho fun was nice but the beef was tough and inedible, the only thing they didn’t screw up was the rice. We called to try and sort it out with the restaurant and the woman was so rude. She tried to blame it on me because I put “No coriander” in the order comments as I have an allergy and always write this in case it is used before ordering Asian food. She then made an excuse to say that the flavour was that way due to the peppers in the dish (there were no peppers, only raw okra which is weird). We can only come to the conclusion that the chefs mistaken Okra for peppers 🤷🏻‍♀️ Their attitudes were just complacent and rude and another guy even said, “If it is too salty, eat more rice with it”. We were offered 2 free dishes for our next order but with that attitude, I won’t bother. Just wasted nearly £35 for food that had to be binned. Avoid!

Very disappointed this evening. I ordered the grilled Seabass which I have ordered several times in the past with no issues. This evening the fish arrived battered and deep fried. With the sauce that was added you can imagine the batter was a sloppy mess. Upset that I can no longer order a much loved dish.

I have always used hakalok for my Chinese takeaways it is the best in wgc and always friendly staff to help you and they are happy for you change things if you have dietary needs

Excellent food and service and what a change from a traditional Chinese or Thai restaurant. We were served promptly and the air conditioning was constantly adjusted to to keep us comfortable. It was large complicated order and they got everything right. Very plain decor, which is shame as it wood be improved with a little ambience.

Really nice Asian find in the north of Welwyn Garden City. Food was so tasty and all looked very authentic. It is a really good price too! We had the dumplings as a starter, then we tried the Laksa and the Mee Goreng. Overall I really recommend it!

Always have a good or great meal here for the price (must have been around 10 times eating in or take away). Yes not perfect every time (varies between 4 and 5 stars say for the price), but overall very happy with the range and quality. Service always been good, very friendly. We haven't tried the delivery service as it's close enough to drive to. Our boys, really like the crispy beef, and the sweet and sour. Find crispy duck and calamari better to eat in than take away. Normally share a rice or noodles with a mains as portions are reasonable.

A little gem offering dine in and takeaway. Fab food, good service. Will return in near future.

We hadn't visited this restaurant for many years but happened to be in the area tonight. We were totally WOWed by the delicious food (a new chef joined recently apparently) and excellent service. The restaurant has minimalist decor and even real tablecloths. Excellent value too. We'll definitely be back. Thank you Team Hakalok.

Easily the best food in Welwyn garden City!

Superb. Honestly amazed to find Malaysian food this good in a random part of WGC. The Singapore Crab is exemplary and everything else was, at the very least, very good.

Food is absolutely delicious. A must

2 hours for delivery. Ordered at 5pm, still hasn’t arrived! The most frustrating thing is they couldn’t have been busy because they open at 5. Avoid if you are hungry!

I found this little gem using Google maps. I hadn't realised it was established 16 years ago! A small enclave of great cuisine in an unlikely place in Welwyn Garden City. I've rated this on the basis of the surprise factor of how good the quality of food and service we received. I will return

Looking for a local restaurant for an evening meal. Hakalok is a little hidden away but worth a visit. The shared starter was very pleasant and ordering for 2 will given enough for enough for 3 to share: ribs and mango salad were particularly enjoyable. For the main course the steamed sea bass was very good. Main bones had been taken out and the fish served as if split down the middle. Very tasty indeed even if there are some bones left so need to be careful. Definitely worth considering. The sauce for the chilli chicken was a little too thick. Quite a small dish too so consider for one person not sharing. Vegetables - pal choi with garlic - was well presented but very salty. Watch not sitting too close to the kitchen as "fumes" come out as they work on the food preparation.

I am so glad I found this place. I only picked it because it was just off the A1 and had parking, but wow is it so much more than that. I have never met such friendly staff. When you leave this place, you not only leave full of absolutely delicious food, you also leave having made new friends who you want to immediately send Christmas cards to as soon as you get home, even though it is only July. It was such a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the staff making you feel like part of the family, and the food was divine, authentic, and delicious. I demand more people discover this place. I'm telling everyone!

Lovely tasty food, nice music..not atall busy

After a family recommendation we first tried this place back in 2016. We have returned on multiple occasions. Beautiful authentic food cooked just the way we like it. So good in fact that it’s worth the 24 mile round trip when we could eat locally instead. Very friendly staff. Heading over there once again later tonight. Great food at a very reasonable price. Recommend the squid, the dumplings and the beef rendang.

We came here for dinner and was greeted with a warm smile and hospitality. We picked 3 dishes that were authentic Malaysian choices. Each dish was freshly prepared and full of flavour. Great service too! We urge you to try it!!

Real authentic food, nice environment, food comes really quick too, however, the menu hasnt changed for 4 years, would be happy to see some new dishes.

We made an order with uber eats and our door number was not on the order (MY MISTAKE) however……!!!!! A Simple call to us to give the door number over would have been sufficient but we were asked to log into Uber and add a note or change the address Which we tried, but Uber would not allow this and it kept asking us to call the restaurant to give address over the phone ….simple!!!! So we called back and gave the relevant info. However the lady was very Rude, Obnoxious and Patronising. She asked me in a very sarcastic manor ‘if we were going to have to call the restaurant every time we place an Uber delivery’ like I’m going to leave the door number off in every order I place. You would think that at this time of year being January and the current situation the world is in she would have been nice about the situation I mean we spent 35 pounds ish. Omg 😱 just can’t believe how rude she was we won’t be eating in the restaurant as planned for future if this is the customer service she gives. Lol not submitting this until our food is delivered 🤣😱

Great food, only ever had take away.

We returned after a long absence during the pandemic, pleased to find the same menu and the same quality of cooking. The Malaysian Assam Fish Curry was excellent as always, and the homemade tofu stands out as original and superb. Long may this gem, of a restaurant, tucked into a small shopping centre in WGC, continue to thrive!

I always wanted to try the food so me and my family ordered in tonight but I was highly disappointed. Food didn’t taste fresh for some reason and portion size was so small! Definitely disappointed :(

Rare fine of a Malaysian Restaurant. Attentive Staff. Laska quite good, big portion. Gado Gado should be cold not cooked.

This is the first time we have visited- the food and service were excellent!! The prawn toasts, crispy prawn dumplings, mee goreng & sweet & sour king prawns were all absolutely delicious. We can’t wait to visit again!

What an absolute gem of a find. I travel alot on the uk road and its so hard to find honest well priced, good hearty food. And to top it off the atmosphere was so kind and relaxed. I definitely left a tip and i will be back! Beautiful menu!

One of our favourite oriental restaurants in Hertfordshire, we love exploring the diverse menu. The place is out of town but well worth visiting.

I ordered a take away from here, firstly my food was £40 minutes late, arrived cold. After opening my chicken and sitting down I discovered it had gone mouldy. The owner told me I did it at home and put food dye on my food for a refund. Very disgusting service I will be reporting to the food standards and will Be taking legal action.

Food deserved a 4 but the unexpected arguments between staff and delivery drivers made the experience a little uncomfortable. The duck was very good, the egg fried rice could have benefitted from msg but all in all very good food. The highlight for me being the prawn wonton and the honey glazed ribs

We've struggled to find good Asian food out in Hertfordshire (having moving from London) but this place is great! We've ordered the laksa, chicken sambal, homemade tofu and Mongolian lamb and all were delicious! So glad we found this place. We will sure be back.

It said they're open until 3pm, but they didn't bother changing their opening times for the pandemic, and wasted us a journey. We won't be going back here!

Andrew was a great host, he made sure we always had what we needed and he's recommendation was excellent.

We had our first takeaway from Hakalok this evening and we were very impressed. We had duck pancakes, Kung Po chicken and a Nasi Gorang. All were exceptional especially the duck pancakes. Although we could eat in at the moment (covid) it looked like a lovely place to sit down and relax. Thankyou Hakalok, great meal :)

Honestly I think4.50 for delivery is to much?

Tried to order on two occasions but order cancelled and then when I phoned to ask if I had been charged phone never answered.

Choon knows Chinese food and can do it too perfection. Some really interesting dishes, but quality is not always consistent.

We’ve just received our order via Uber eats and I’m fuming. £9.50 worth of crispy duck looks less than even a quarter, stone cold. £7.50 crispy chilli is brown soft and cold. Prawn toasts cold and soggy. £50 takeaway I’m so disappointed. Having to put it all in the oven so now it feels like I’m eating leftovers.

Very friendly management. The malay food was very authentic and different to your usual Chinese. The best spare ribs I've ever tasted by far. I highly recommend there delivery service. Special rice and noodles where delicious and i could taste that they use good quality ingredients in there dishes.

Every time we come to Welwyn to see family we can't help but order from Hakalok to takeaway. Very varied menu, haven't had a single issue with any of our lengthy orders. Their chilli beef is to die for!

Delivery order - arrived late despite ordering well in advance via Uber eats, no update, weren't even sure what, where or even if id placed an order when I called to find out where it was. Told its hard to cope on a Saturday, which is not reassuring, nor my fault, if you can't cope, dont take the orders. Sides were cold, fishcakes were rubbery, the main was just about an edible temperature, which may or may not have been good as it really didn't taste great either. Disappointed as the restaurant has some good reviews, which means they are either fake or, the place is taking on too many orders and are sacrificing quality at busy times.

The food was 45 minutes late being delivered. I called the restaurant and said when it arrives it won’t be cold will it? The reply was no....it was cold the crispy squid was cold and floppy. The rest of the food was cold including crispy beef and Singapore noodles. If you want good portions also this is not the place £23 for 3 starter sized dishes.

I have purchased take-away from here a couple of times, based on reviews, It is more expensive than the one that is a few doors down and I suppose I expect better food. Ordered last Saturday Beef with black bean, sesame prawn toast and a few other dishes.Prawn toast very greasy and beef in black bean tasteless. It’s a shame as nice people, Just feel a bit more care is needed with the food to add a bit more flavour. If the food was cheap I would not expect that bit extra

We have been visiting Hakalok since the lockdown and always greatly enjoy their food. They serve the best barbecue ribs I have ever had.
