Gurkha Village Nepalese Restaurant in Cherwell

7 of us dined at the Gurkha again last night and the service was second to none. Nothing was rushed and the food was warm and tasty as always.

Atmosphere: We went on a early Friday evening, and the restaurant was empty. The place looked fine. Service: There was no one to tell us where to sit or to greet us. After a minute or so, one of the staff members came, didn't look particularly happy or welcoming, and showed us to a table in the corner of the restaurant. Couple of other staff members seemed a bit more cheerful and welcoming. Food (note: we were very hungry when we ate): average in taste, low in quality and high in price. We ordered vegetarian momos (4 pieces for over £6). Taste was okay, but this is quite pricey. We then ordered chilli potato, which was 40% lettuce, 30% onions, 20% over fried chips and the rest was oil, sauces and flavours. Overall it was a small portion. The taste was good (perhaps 6/10), but the quality seemed poor. Again, quite a high price for the flavour and quality of the food. Overall: I would go back if prices were reduced by 50%, smiles were increased by 200%, oil was reduced by 50% or my desperation was increased by 100%

Superb Nepalese food in a very well run restaurant. It has a little bar area to frequent, ideal for meeting others for pre-drinks. The quality of food is consistently excellent and the staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly. Well worth a visit!

This is a fantastic Nepalese restaurant in Kidlington. The staff were so friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. There was plenty of choice on the menu, including fish, lamb, and chicken, as well as vegetarian options. I would highly recommend this restaurant as you will not be disappointed. ☆☆☆☆☆

The service was disappointing, and the response from the restaurant was poor. They delivered an incomplete order with a missing food item and directed me to contact Uber Eats instead of addressing the issue themselves. I specifically requested cutlery since I’m staying at a hotel where the restaurant is closed, but they failed to accommodate this basic request. The least they could have done was respond politely and show some courtesy towards their customers. Additionally, the food tasted very basic, overly salty, and highly unsatisfactory overall.

A wonderful takeaway on Christmas Eve, lovely service and comms and food good as always. Delivered at the time asked, fantastic.

Had a meal in the restaurant with family, absolutely brilliant food & service. We also had a takeaway tonight again absolutely fantastic food.

Last minute table booked on a Saturday night for 4 people. Lamb chops to start and then salmon for main which was super yummy. A great little find

Absolutely crackin food, I had the salmon and oh my gosh, it was amazing. My partner had the shangrila chicken which was also very good. Would definitely eat here again.

Actually I have to say that this was the best indian food I ever had. The taste was amazing…with herbs inside. Now I know where I will order again on my next stay in Oxford…highly recommended!!!!

Absolutely outstanding food. I'm vegetarian and they have ample choice. Beautifully cooked, favoured and presented.

Food was overly spicy, can't even feel the taste but only chillies. Staff was good and ambience also. But didn't like the food at all, bit expensive also. Chicken Biryani pieces hard to chewed, lamb tastes not the restaurant level.

From someone who eats out quite a bit, I can honestly say that this was the best curry that I've had in a long time - possibly ever! I had the chicken lababda, which was just amazing- the flavourings and spices were unlike anything I've ever tasted before. My son had the chicken korma, which was also delicious. Rice was plump and tasty and the nan bread (plain) was not at all greasy or too oversized. For desert we had gulab jamun, which was also good. This restaurant holds a 5 star food hygiene rating from 23 May 2023. Will definitely be back next time we come to Oxford - we'll done!

First time we’ve had food from here. Ordered a takeaway. The process online was simple and the food was ready on time. Nice menu with some interesting dishes not seen elsewhere. The food was excellent. Very tasty and good quality. Will be back.

The food was really good. Driven past this place for years, but this was our first visit.

driver allegedly told restaurant he couldn't find house, sat outside 10-12 min plus phoned. utter nonsense. our address is NOT hard to find, neither of us had any calls. if you sit in our street for 10m, you could walk and see every house in 5 so why not do that? houses are numerical, if you can count, you can find us. we're end terrace, very obvious from street, with visible door number and nos on all 3 bins. took another 20m after being told 5. luckily food was fab.

Placed an order online. Worth noting if your order is under £40 there is a delivery fee which I didn't feel was obvious enough. Also absolutely no indication on how long delivery will be when looking to order online. Upon placing order received a message stating an hour delivery time - not ideal, but it's Saturday night, it's sometimes expected. After 1h15 with no delivery and no update, we phoned to enquire. My call was passed around multiple staff members, a lot of movement and talking between themselves. Honestly sounded like no one knew what was going on and we had possibly been forgotten. I finally got an update that the driver will leave in 10-15 minutes. I expressed disatisfaction with the service timescale, and was told the original time told is only an estimate which can vary by 10/15 mins. That's fine, I appreciate that but 15 minutes after my call equals 1h30 after we had ordered. I'd prefer to stick to establishments which are clear and upfront about wait times, and can meet reasonable wait times. That said, the food is always lovely. Just frustrating and disappointed that the delivery service does not match the same standard.

The plain rice the plain nan were nice popodum was great. The samosas were edible but stale. Chips oily inedible. Ordered chilli chips in error we didn’t touch or eat and the staff refused to replace them. Chicken chaat was average and dry chicken. Not sure if it’s due to restaurant or this cuisine but wasn’t the best. Moody and rude staff/terrible customer service. Ordered chicken noodles takeaway and threw away as oily and felt sick on one spoon. Not worth it - staff on exit tried to make small talk which was to only ask where I’m from ethnicity wise. Bizarre.

What a gem Gurkha Village is!! Easy to find and park, plenty of space in their car park. Super choice and knowledgeable staff when asked about options. Food was fresh and perfect!! Didn't feel rushed and enjoyed a really nice chat about Nepal too. Highly recommend and will be back.

Bland chicken curry, sauce was runny and just had no real flavour. delivery late after saying courier was on way but never turned up, had to phone the restaurant to get order sorted. Very disappointed with this order!

Always love Nepalese food, a bit different to your typical curry houses, this one did not disappoint at all. From the outside it looks like an old pub, inside the decor was great, all staff I met were brilliant, helpful both in prompt and correct food delivery, and also in getting us a taxi when we finished. Starters of lamb mojo and a dry 3 chilli chicken with salad, then mains of a mild Haryali chicken (if I remember the name right), and a medium spiced Ghurka lamb curry, with a nice rice and one of the best sweet naans I have ever had. Food was tasty and hot, served with a smile, thanks for a great meal and evening guys. Wish we lived nearer!

Called in for a cheeky lunch date and was not disappointed. Fantastic food and great service. This has become our go to restaurant. Theres something for everyones's tastes. The Jhol Momo is amazing for a tasty lunch. We will definitely be back.

What a find. Great food and excellent service

Staying nearby to visit Blenheim Palace this was a wonderful find. Plentiful parking and great service. A small range of Nepalese and street food specials really proved to be something a cut above the run of the mill Indian. We had wonderful dumpling starters and a couple of the specials. Service was superb just sad we don’t live nearer but worth seeking out if you are visiting the area.

We had buffet lunch in Gurkha Village today and also ordered chicken Chow Chow and Chilli Momo . The food is very nice and we really enjoyed. However, when I asked some napkins paper , the waiter has given only three napkins paper as we are four members although. I hope the management would certainly look in to it and will put some positive measures to give their customers utmost satisfaction

Delicious food from Gurkha Village as always. Always arrives hot and tasty - went for the Gurkha lamb and Momos. Portion sizes just right. Arrived earlier than the estate but that's great as I was hungry.

The food was excellent, and the service was great. Good value for money. The menu has something that everyone liked. My son had butter chicken and said it was the best he’d had. I had a Himalayan dish I’d not tried before which was delicious. Would highly recommend

I had another excellent meal at Gurkha Village yesterday evening. The food was great as usual but what really makes the experience wonderful is the staff who are always very happy to offer advice about dishes and chat about life in Nepal. Asjun is particularly lovely and went above and beyond his professional role to make us feel welcome and relaxed and asked the chef to make us an authentic chai tea. Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Has been good in the past, but missed part of my order, then didn't respond when I contacted them about it.

This was one of a number of visits to this restaurant, when we are in the area. The menu is very wide ranging catering for all tastes and dietary requirements can be easily accommodated. The food is excellent with generous sized portions, and the service is very good. We felt that the costs were a little expensive but this would not put us off making further visits.

We had a lovely meal for my Birthday, Arjun provided us with excellent and friendly service. We are always enjoy coming here for food.

Thoroughly recommend the food at Gurkha Village! I had a great chicken and lamb curry, and the chicken momos shouldn't be missed! The service was attentive and quick.

Food was lovely. Just make sure to book a table in advance to use a tastecard. We were not allowed to use ours as a walk in.

Ten of us went to the restaurant for New Year's Eve Celebrations. What a fantastic evening we had with live entertainment and as always superb food. Thank you to all the staff for making it such an enjoyable and memorable event.

No refund for giving meat dishes to vegetarians. I complained and received no response. Very disappointing

This is for staff behaviour,the person took bookings but didn't allow you when you go to the restaurant even if you reach on time or you have already booked table. He only decides whom he would allow to sit. I want to draw attention to the management if they are interested.

Don’t bother. I ordered a vegetable biryani. I’m a vegetarian When I arrived home it was a meat dish. Accidents happen, but when I escalated to just eat I received a response to say they would apply a refund as it ‘goes against policy’. Apparently if you’re collecting you need to check every dish before you leave to ensure there’s no meat in there. I’ve never left a review before but was shocked that just eat (and Gurkha village) were willing to risk future business for an 11 quid refund. Crazy!

Nice pub with table tennis , board games and lots of unusual antiques all around. Drinks are a fair price but they need a good draught ale on tap.

A beautifully cooked Gurkha Special Mixed Mash Karahi curry with the best keema Naan I have ever eaten. The meat and fish were perfectly cooked. The spices come by through the curry.

Delivery early foods still hot and test delicious perfect price I am well recommended.

Food not bad, but we ordered a take away and it took 2 hours We had to phone up after an hour and a half and then they promised 20 minutes 30 minutes later it turned up with barely an appology

It was very disappointed to wait for long time.

Terrible I used to order very often delivery time was never great but doable, today I had to wait 2 hours. My sister called in and the man who picked up the phone said someone was on the way then she asked can we pick it up as were local he then said that it was still in the oven therefore he lied about someone being on the way. She asked if we would get a discount or something in return he said thank you bye and hung up in her face. Never again will I order here and I’ll make sure those around me know.

Gurkha Village is a very welcoming restaurant with friendly and attentive staff, an attractive and comfortable place with excellent Nepalese food. We particularly enjoyed the lamb curry and the garlic naan were delicious. We arrived soon after opening time so the atmosphere hadn't really had time to build, but there was a steady stream of customers arriving and it was clear many were regulars. A very enjoyable meal!

Chicken tikka massala very watery,keema rice very bland hardly any meat

Very disappointing takeaway tonight. Choik tka marsala runny, very little meat. Chk tka madras also runny, meat sparse and at least vindaloo hot. As an avid curry eater I was surely disappointed. Shame, previous experience excellent but it's been a while and standard of food tonight poor.

We went here on Sunday 27th for an evening meal, and it was by far one of the best Nepalese meals we have had in a long time. All the meat was lovely and tender and the flavours were outstanding. We live a long way away, but next time we are in the Oxford/ Kidlington area this will be a must!

Always perfect! We are so lucky to have this gem in our village. My partner and I go regularly, as do my parents, grandparents and all the family! They're always professional and welcoming, the food is always top notch - it's a lovely and warm place to spend an evening.

Have visited this restaurant previously and this occasion was a family lunch. The menu has a wide range and is reasonably priced. Dietary requirements can be easily accommodated. Drinks were served quickly, although the ordering and serving of meals took a little time - perhaps because the meals were freshly prepared. When served the food quality and portion size was excellent. A very enjoyable occasion.

First time visiting the restaurant and have to say.. could not fault the experience,VERY friendly,courteous and attentive staff, but not overly clingy,nice courtyard area which we sat and drunk our drinks before making our way to our table,which was perfectly presented,we were there for an anniversary and our host had even made note of our names and the occasion,as he made reference to it as we were seated,great customer service.On to the meal, could not be faulted,a few poppadoms with various sauces and chutneys to wet our appetites,then onto our starters which comprised of Dahl soup and chicken momo's all of which were lovely,and again, perfectly presented,then onto our mains,mixed noodles with chicken and prawns and gurkha special,which was chicken and lamb pieces with tomatoes,capsicum and coriander, basically a beautiful curry of medium spice,one word. . gorgeous,we personally couldn't find fault with any of the food,and we will be returning to sample some more of the extensive menu. Highly recommended.

If you are passing or are staying within 20 miles ... add this to your list as the food is superb and the staff really friendly. The selection of Nepalese dishes is extensive and the staff will guide you (if you need it) to find a great selection of tempting dishes to make your evening a success. The restaurant can get busy and (as the staff give you good service throughout), you may have to wait a little between courses ... but it really is worth it !
