The Greggy is an impressive local facility which is full of left leaning locals. As a paid up member of Corbyn’s fan club I love it I’m here. Debate is robust, yet polite, but any mention of Thatcher gets met with stern looks, tuts and raised voices until you point out that it’s the cider you want, not Maggie. Will be back.

My wife and I had our wedding reception at The Gregson Centre yesterday, and we can't say enough about the wonderful experience they helped us create. Charles helped us organise all the details of the hire of rooms, the arrangement of the main hall and all about how the day could run. On the day, the Gregson team were fantastic in helping us set up, keeping on top of things and responding to all the needs as and when they came up, including some serious clean-up action well into the early hours, always with a smile (special mention goes to Bex here). Guests were very complimentary about the place, and the kids loved exploring, since we were able to hire the cinema and Olive Bar upstairs for the day too. Room hire prices were very reasonable indeed, as were drinks, which really allowed us to do the event justice on a tight budget. Being very local to us, we were already pretty familiar with The Gregson, but now it has a very special place in our hearts.

We used to pop into the Greggy every week (often more than once a week) but now all they seem to cater for is people who like out of tune repetitive Folk music! Not everyone likes Folk music so having it on 3 times a week just alienates customers who want to sit and have a quiet drink. Popped in today for a few drinks and the bottom section of the bar has been taken over by an ‘Irish Folk Festival’ which doesn’t appear to have been widely advertised and was just the same song over and over and over and over agin! I am a musician and can appreciate most music genres but the music played here is dreadful. The only people who seem to enjoy it are the people who are playing. Very frustrated that a ‘Community bar’ only caters for a small section of the community.

I really want to like this place as it is very near my house, this was the second time since the new kitchen, sadly both times were just ok... food wasn't terrible but for the price was a bit average, had a school dinners vibe about it. Probably wont go back for a while... Nice place for a drink when the fire is on, Although beer is quite pricey too. Staff very friendly.

I went to the Gregson centre with some people that I have known for a long time. We wanted a big meal, and the staff there said that was OK. The good was lovely, but in the way out a woman in clothes made from hemp asked if I would buy her vegan carpet. I didn't though.

On the last visit - the new menu does not label what is vegan so you have to ask...and it is very expensive for boring food. Maybe a visit to other places in town doing creative food for less may help give them ideas of what customers can get in town-you feel like the Gregson doesn’t really care about its offering!

I've been visiting the Gregson Centre for many years now and I have to say I still enjoy going once in a while to go to a place with a nice atmosphere and relatively cheap drinks. However, I've found that the price of the food has drastically increased compared to what it was previously. The food is delicious (except for the pizzas, but I'll mention that in a sec) and the prices used to be a lot more reasonable; I feel that now they're not worht paying for, which I feel bad for saying. The pizzas have seemed to decline in quality recently. Whenever I got one with meat on it, it would come out extremely greasy and not really a wholesome experience. Even pizzas that don't have any meat products on them still come out a bit too greasy for my tastes. They used to be a bit cheaper and of better quality. I love the atmosphere and friendly staff, but the food no longer worth its price unfortunately.

We went for family breakfast but decided not to order in the end. We have always been impressed with the quality of the food, but sadly the prices have been put up way beyond what is reasonable now (in our opinion. More than £12.50 for a breakfast and coffee... (£10 for the breakfast), brie and bacon burgers £14....possibly the most expensive place in Lancaster for this type of food. Sadly lost our custome.

We were all a bit concerned as the Gregson changed managers but we were wrong. The new people are doing an excellent job. Recently Lancaster University staff have been holding 'teach outs' in the building as part of their strike action (change of pension rights) which have proved very popular drawing lots of new folk into the building. The Gregson is as dynamic and as fun as ever.

Came for lunch and coffee with a friend, what a lovely place!First of all the latte and hot chocolate was delicious, and presented well, we noticed a wide range of local brewed ales alingside their own ale 'gregson community ale' We ordered 2 'light bites' for only £10 and you get very large portions for what you pay for, not only that but it was very good quality food, the ham was delicious and also my pasta bake was made with a local fresh veg delivered that day, along side hand cut chips. There is a small tidy looking yard and also a 'swapsi' book shelf where customers can bring their books and swap them with other ones which is a nice little touch, also along side a children's play area with toys and kids books. We also noticed a coal fire which is rare nowadays. We left very full and satisfied and would recommend this quirky little gem to anyone, excellent food and excellent service from the friendly staff! As we left we also noticed a hand painted ceiling and an art exhibition where local artist display their work for people to buy, a great community centre all around for any ages, I also believe they have a cinema and function rooms you can hire out. Will be visiting this place more often!

We have eaten in at The Gregson Centre before and enjoyed the food so now we've moved house further away we opted for a take away. We had tortillas to share followed by burgers and chips. The tortillas were a let down as they had no guacamole, poorly mixed and in melted cheese. But the saving grace was the burger and chips, I would put them up there with the best in town!! On the whole great value for money and tasty

I took my son to a cinema party booked for a group of ~10 year olds. The cinema was great, however when it came to the kids being served pizzas (proper pizzas in boxes - delicious!), it didn't seem practical to have them served in the cinema where there were no tables or chairs – just cinema seats. Also, the dads wanted to start clearing the drink cartons/spilled popcorn etc in the cinema, so it would be left in the condition we had found it - does everyone do this? So the pizzas were served outside on the picnic tables by a lovely bloke – very friendly and helpful - and as there were lots of us, we did fill the area. Two 'characters' then appeared outside wanting to smoke. When we politely asked them if they would refrain from smoking where the kids were eating, they flatly refused. They proceeded to sit at a table where my friend and I were sitting and began to 'roll up'. I told them we would only be around 10 mins, but their retort was ‘it was their right'. The kids were getting quite giddy by this point - 2 of them even throwing a slice of pizza at each other, but because of the smokers' attitude, I felt little guilt in letting them carry on, although one of the other mums did stop them. Smoker female complained to smoker male and when I asked her what the problem was, she told me she wasn't talking to me, even though she'd sat down at the table where I was sitting so I couldn’t help but hear. She then went inside to complain to the female behind the counter who actually came out and reprimanded US for taking up all the seats (??? - there were 18 of us!) and for the kids being noisy - the birthday boy and some of his friends are DEAF! I thought the woman smoking had pulled another couple, who were sitting at a table inside, into the situation as she had stopped to talk to them, however when we were leaving, the couple joked with me about how many pizzas were being taken home and when my friend apologised in case the kids had made too much noise when they were heading outside and coming back in, the couple dismissed her apology, saying there was no need! The mums had ordered 2 rounds of coffees and cakes then some food from the lunch menu. To be told we can't use all the seats even though we are all eating and drinking their food is absolutely shocking. Are we to stand and eat these so some distasteful character can come out AFTER US and sit down during a kid's party and smoke? I am not against people wanting to smoke and although EVERY smoker I have mentioned this to said they wouldn’t dream of smoking beside kids – they’d have gone a few steps along the alleyway, or out the front if they were that desperate, but most said they would’ve just waited. My gripe is that we were already out there, eating the food and drinking the drinks we’d paid for BEFORE these two came outside so why on earth would the female member of staff have the audacity to reproach us for sitting down to eat, unless somehow this character took priority??!! Obviously she did, and it seems it’s because she frequents the place every day. Well I certainly hope she buys plenty as my friend must have paid well for the party but it isn’t something any of us will be repeating. We had been looking for a new venue for our work's social club and this had looked ideal. Also, it's always great to be the mum finding a fantastic new birthday idea – a cinema?!! - to tell all the other mums. Well I certainly will not be recommending this place to anyone, especially families. I’d like to stress that under normal circumstances, if I’m sitting in a smoking area, then I would not expect people to refrain from smoking, but then again if I wanted to smoke, I wouldn’t expect someone who was eating, to get up and move for me. There was no alternative offered by the female staff member who ‘reprimanded us’. This whole situation could have easily been resolved if handled by a more competent staff member but as she also refused to give us a knife to cut the birthday cake leaving us to cut it with a standard dinner knife, I doubt she’s found her true vocation. I reiterate that the guy serving the pizzas was extremely pleasant and accommodating. The female staff member would do well to adopt his attitude. With some of the children being deaf, at least both the telling off by the staff and the smoker’s sarcastic comments went unheard by them so thankfully, didn’t ruin the party for them. A great little party venue for your kids? I think not.

I used to love eating here. I used to tell people to come here for the best breakfasts in town. Not any more! My partner and I came in for a late breakfast one recent Saturday and my oh my were we disappointed. I am only glad that on this occasion we did not meet up with friends, or we would have been very embarrassed! We both ordered a Full English. From previous experience it was freshly made, and sumptuous. On this occasion it was luke warm, tired, and begging to be put out of its misery. The entire meal took longer than usual - even though we were only one of three couples in there at the time. When the food came out, it was clearly just the remains of what was on a hotplate from the morning. The sausages were dry, but they weren't even browned off. While technically cooked, they were a pinkish white, grisly and devoid of flavour. The bacon was clearly cooked earlier and reheated to be served, the hash browns were initially forgotten but when they came out they were very greasy, the beans were so dry they were almost a powder, and there was some very rubbish bread. We saw the 'Chef' stumble out of the kitchen shortly after, he looked very worse for wear and in a foul mood to boot. Oh Gregson! What happened??

But on the second floor many different things can go on. For example, depending on the day/evening there can be: Tai Chi for beginners, Millennium Choir, traditional dancing, folk music and language lessons to name but a few!The building is accessible for wheelchairs and a lot of thought has been put into the design of an older building for disabled people. I have been to the Gregson a few times over the past 2 years with my hubby and friends. The menu choices are great, it serves cask ale (along with Lancaster brewery beers sold by the bottle) and the staff are very friendly and helpful, it's just such a shame that the food is so hit and miss. The first couple of times we went it was great (especially with being vegetarian) however out last 2 visits have been a disappointment. We went for a Birthday tea early this year and it took nearly an hour for us to get our food (it was a Thursday evening and not very busy) when our food arrived the order was wrong and the food was barely warm. We did complain at the time but couldn't afford to wait another hour for them to cook the food again for us. After this we left it a while before giving it another go then went for tea a couple of weeks ago for our anniversary. Again we waited ages for our food (about 45 mins) and it was a Tuesday evening and not very busy. When the food arrived my husbands order was wrong so we had to send it back. I had finished eating my food before his replacement (correct) meal arrived so I then had to sit and wait for him (not a very romantic anniversary meal). We have also had takeaway from there a couple of times. The first time the pizza was delicious, but last Friday when we went we ordered a vegetarian pizza and tomato garlic bread, the pizza was ok but the garlic bread dough was raw (we had to recook it in our oven) so again very hit and miss. It's such a shame because with a bit more care and thought the place could be fantastic.

We have been regular customers at the gregson for many years and enjoyed the venue, atmosphere and service, so it's such a shame to report the terrible deterioration of the Gregson. Dined there last night, and waited over an hour and a half for food to be delivered. No apology for the delay (it was not even that busy) and staff seemed oblivious to the fact the order had not been delivered. After we reminded staff twice, the food finally arrived...well some food did arrive, but not what we ordered. When I challenged this, the response was "can you not eat it anyway?". I should declare an interest: I used to work here many years ago. So when I popped in on a flying visit to Lancaster for a pint and a bite part of me was hoping that the place might have nosedived since I left. It hasn't. They still look after their beers, still keep a fine variety on the bar, still offer a vegan option, and still serve it all with a smile. Furthermore, the food is still good, and drawn from a large and varied menu. Bags of atmosphere, and not quite like anywhere else you have ever been. Might even have improved since my time. Damn!

The reviews about this place are ridiculous. The pitta dipper sharer we had cost £6.95 and consisted of one pitta bread, three small plastic pots of dips and some salad- I mean seven quid!!! Obscenely overpriced. The vegetarian pizza was watery and had a cheap taste. The place is disgusting and filthy, the service very poor, definitely avoid this dump!

I went here today for a colleagues leaving meal and the food was amazing! The food is good value for money and extremely tasty and home made. The fajitas with spicy beef and chicken are definitely recommended! The food did take a while to make but there was a large group of us and all the food was cooked to order.Would definitely recommend to anyone seeking somewhere to eat for lunch or dinner.

I ate and drank here once. It was family friendly (ie loads of screaming brats in the place) but not too obnoxious and it's a community centre after all. It's quite an odd venue, community centre and gastro pub with a takeaway on the side. Don't let that put you off, it's a decent enough place for a drink and a meal. I had the burger- it was above average if not amazing and was reasonably priced. Beer priced on the high side for Lancaster but you're supporting the community by drinking- a win/win for everybody. Friendly locals and a place that I'm sure would grow on you if you became a regular.

The gregson centre is a place I go regularly as it is on my doorstep. I have drunk in here for quite a few years now (and im not old). The gregson is aimed at people of all ages.both singles and familys. The atmosphere in there is ALWAYS warm and friendly. The place has a lovely warm roaring fire on in the cold winter which its really cozy....and a beer garden to sit out in the summer. The staff are always polite and helpful and the food is really good too. The piza,s by domanick are absolutely beautiful. Its a good place to go if you want a quiet coffee and to read a paper or to have a social gathering. They often have events on ( for both children and adults) I can't really fault it in anyway. So keep up the good work. I will continue to visit this place as long as im around :-)

When I first walked into gregsons, I was like wow - wry one there were friendly. They have the war hot chocolate in town. Ask for the special one where they give you a small bad of chocolate as well. Food is yummy, tastes like homes made food. Staff is extremely good to you. They have books to read . Interesting people to talk to and amazon events all year long. You'd never feel left out here.

Gregson's is an arts centre / social centre/ pub / restaurant. The pub is a comfy place to be in - wood panels, wooden tables, people playing traditional pub games, and a variety of customers all rubbing shoulders. No loud music or TV. Staff are very friendly. There are good real ales plus a fair few single malts behind the bar. I saw customers being served hot toddy - that's unusual. There is a longish menu of nibbles (hummus, olives etc), pizzas, burritos, and burgers. It's great for vegetarians. The food is cheap, plentiful and tasty. It's pub grub not fine dining, but then the place is a pub! Food is served until 9pm. Would I go back? If I wanted a pleasant night in a pub with nice beer and reasonable food, which I often do, then I'd go back, and I will.

New to lancaster. Told about the gregson centre. Great idea for a place nice building. The problem is the people that sit in the bar area. Its full of local people that think they are better than anyone else. But they are just rude and obnoxious. I would not recommend to anyone to go due to the customers they have. The food is nice most the staff are friendly.

I used to love this place and despite my last visit being very disappointing I hope to return in the hope it was a one off.I visited with my husband and daughter for an evening meal, I am vegan and although there is an ok choice (not inventive just the norm) the meal was awful. Differed from the menu due to running out of ingredients of which I was only told when they brought out the food!!!!!! No vegan option for a dessert! How hard is it to offer fresh fruit? Come on gregson!!!!! It's a great pub with a great atmosphere that I love having a pint in but please sort out the vegan options. Cheers

It's a community centre, cinema, pub, takeaway, restaurant, salsa-club... need I go on!? A crazy mismatch of so many things can't possibly be good at any of them, can it? Oh yes.If you're a burger fan then try the NY burger, I love it :o) The pizzas have gone down hill in quality, and the pasta is reasonable... it's all about the burger for me though!Good beer, relaxing atmosphere and nice food. My favourite spot in Lancaster I think.

Same scenario as in ,heartbreak', below. This time we had a king prawn fajita between us and a side of chips. Excellent in every respect. No laughter & chaos in the kitchen, a smart young chef handling several orders at once and fleet service by his young female colleague. We'll go again

we are regulars at the Gregson, it is always the place we choose midweek when we cant be bothered to cook. It is very child friendly, the food is good and wholesome and a fire welcomes you in the winter months. Lets not forget the beer, top quality always and with some excellent guest beer. Finally the staff are friendly and offer great, fast service. A home from home.

This is one of the few pubs in Lancaster I would feel fine going into on my own for a pint and a read of a paper and not feel uncomfortable (I'm female). The food is scrummy although I agree that there isn't much choice for vegetarians like there used to be. The local ale is delicious as is the wine. The atmosphere is laid back boho almost hippy like which I love. It has a mixture of ages and types of people which is always interesting. Lots going on almost every day and some fantastic bands/performers.Great place and a breath of fresh air!

Although the nachos had gone downhill lately, with fewer vegetables added & smaller portion of veggie chilli, there were other veggie options to try. However, the menu has now been revised, and all there really is for veggies is a bean burger. I'm not the sort who hates change, but only offering bean burgers is not an improvement. Bean burgers are incredibly bland, and I am sick of having to make do with them in places that are too lazy to offer anything else. We just left without ordering food. I expected more of The Gregson, and won't be eating there again until they offer more choice.

I continue to wonder about the popularity of this community centre, pub, restaurant. In terms of somewhere to hold a small public meeting in Lancaster, it is fine. They keep some good local beer, which is a pleasure to drink. We went to an arranged social. It was fine for an informal gathering. The meal was the best I have eaten there but it was only average, whereas previously it has been mediocre or poor. I returned as it was for a social that I attended rather than arranged. It is not a venue I would select. However, it is very popular, so I might be out of step with the rest of the world.

The Gregson used to be an excellent plact to go for a quiet drink and a bite to eat, but in my opinion the quality of the food, particularly for vegetarians, is nowhere near as good as it used to be. We visited on Saturday 05/01/2013 and I ordered a large vegetarian pizza. Halfway through eating it I found a piece of ham! To be fair to the staff they were apologetic and refunded the cost of the pizza but this has really put me off eating there again. This isn't the first issue we've had with the new caterer at the Gregson (Dominic?) but it is the worst!I'm really sad to have to post this review as I've really enjoyed going to the Gregson for many years but won't be going back in a hurry now.

I have been visiting the Gregson Centre for years and always look forward to going there for food. The menu is just the right size offering dishes from all around the world. The bar staff are caring professionals who are very approachable and always game for a laugh! I would definitely recommend the Gregson centre for all ages and every occasion, whether you fancy a coffee and a read by the fire or a family party or meal, will be made to feel most welcome

The Gregson is a bit of a Lancaster legend having been around for a number of decades and it remains a down to earth, comfortable place to have drink, some food and (often) a bit of a dance! The choice of food and price is nicely varied with plenty of veggie options. I will walk past many other places to get here.

Not many places you can go to that advertise they sell vegan beers, are dog and child friendly and the reading material provided is the independent and the socialist standard! And a delicious pizza that tasted more like Italy and less like pizza hut

Recently chose the Gregson to celebrate a family birthday. It was relaxed and welcoming being busy although being a Monday night. The menu choice is varied and the portions and unity of the food are excellent. We took our own cake which the staff brought in for us with candles a knife and napkins. Only point for improvement would be to have presented it on a plate rather than the plastic packaging it was bought in. Thanks an enjoyable evening.
