Greens Cafe & Bistro in South Lakeland

If I could give 10 stars for service I would. We were on a bus tour and had only a half hour, no problem were totally looked after in a very timely manner. Food was a amazing chicken and cheese sandwich with delicious vegetable soup and a naughty hot chocolate. Everything was perfect, nothing could have been better. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this place, especially if you are gluten free, I couldn’t decide what to have as there were so many options and all homemade with is amazing. I went for a ham and cheese toastie with the soup and it was so delicious. I took away a fruit scone with the homemade jam which was like heaven I just wish I had taken a cheese one as well now. My fiancé had the sausage roll and soup which he said was so nice and he also took two cakes home as he just couldn’t decide. The staff are so nice and friendly and we will definitely return when we are next in Grasmere 😊

We were welcomed in at 3.30 pm on a rainy April day, when all the other cafes and restaurants in Grasmere had turned us away or closed their doors. We were soaking as were our dogs but Greens turned out to be a haven for the tired walker, looking for wholesome nourishment. We met the lovely Karen, the owner, who left a London life to create something special in the lakes, a more wholesome and healthy offering than your average. Generous portions arrived, seemingly all home made. I had a very simple but delicious chicken and humous sandwich accompanying a thick warming red lentil soup. Followed by a glorious slice of their home-made Bakewell tart, made with an abundance of ground almond, less sugar and hence healthier than anything you would buy commercially (or even in Bakewell, where I had recently been). The staff (Karen’s offspring?) were lovely and attentive, and showed our dogs a lot of love. We left feeling that fate had handed us a winning card in bringing us to Greens!

Supper quick service, good, reasonably priced food. Don't allow dogs though but lovely outdoor tables at the back. We had jacket potatoes, soup, sandwiches and were all served piping hot within minutes. Very busy daily but you can usually get a table very quickly.

We had the most wonderful afternoon tea to celebrate my sister in laws birthday. She is Gluten Free. Everything was lovely and we had to take the cake home as there was no room for it. Rob the owner and his staff were amazing, even though they were short staffed. We are going for breakfast in the morning before leaving for home. Thank you so much.

What a fantastic place. Arrived in Grasmere whilst on a walk and wanted a nice lunch. Service and food was exceptional and it’s great to see a family run business being run so well, with their son who was helping with service today, being a tremendous ambassador for their fine business. We will return soon

The minute we walked in we felt welcomed. The service was excellent also. Food was all homemade and well presented. The soup was divine and made fresh that morning. Lucky find, and will return soon👍

We chose to go here for lunch after a rainy morning walk. It was absolutely delicious. The menu catered for veggies, vegans and meat eaters in our group. The staff were also great in catering for a nut allergy in our party. All our food was fab (I can vouch for the rarebit). Great coffee too. Proper family run business. Such a little gem! Totally recommend.

Arguably the best cafe in Grasmere. The owners are always very warm and welcoming, and excellent customer service comes as standard. A good reasonably priced menu full of delicious food and drinks. My go-to place for breakfast or lunch or just to grab a quick espresso before heading to the nearby fells. Highly recommended 👌

Very good range of food - both vegetarian, vegan and omnivore. Food is well presented. Cafe is small and staff are friendly and efficient. Outdoor seating is available. Wheelchair access is easy. Take away menu available.

Greens was a fantastic find, I am coeliac and the owner could not have been more accommodating whilst having a full understanding of my gluten free diet. I had so much choice from the menu, even down to cheese scones, various cakes and toasted sandwiches. My family (non coeliac) were catered for just as well and my children also enjoyed the menu and the variety of options. We enjoyed Greens so much that my mother and I squeezed in a second visit for coffees and cakes. Cannot wait to return when we're next in Grasmere and, in the meantime, highly recommend to any visitors to the Lakes.

Have visited Greens before, the food and service are excellent. All of the food is homemade, and there are great veggie, vegan and gluten free choices. Definitely worth visiting.

The best vegan tea bread I have ever had!

I live in Cheshire and first visited Greens 4 years ago. I enjoyed the food and ambience very much so I have tried to return many times when I am in the area as I was this week. I completely respect that Green's can and do open whenever they want to (good for them!) but it is frustrating to drive all to Grasmere, pay a £4k parking fee and then find Green's is closed as I did yesterday 22.02.24 at 1120 hours. I tried to call first to find out if they were open but the phone no does not work, nor does the 'new phone' number. I just wish Green's would update the phone no so customers can check to see if they are open before wasting time travelling there and money on the carpark to only to find they are closed. This has happened to me three times hence I am writing this review - please sort it out Guys. My cycling friends from Cheshire also suffered the same experience as this.

We visited Greens for lunch and from the minute we stepped inside we found it to be extremely welcoming, with helpful and attentive staff. Two of our family are gluten free (coeliac) so it’s often tricky to feel safe eating out, however the staff at Greens were very clued up about cross- contamination and had lots of gluten free lunch choices, including the most delicious warm cheese scones. I would recommend coming to this lovely spot if you’re in the area.

Clearly advertises in multiple locations as being open every day except Wednesday, visited today (Friday) to find it closed. No opening times displayed, no messages in the window or on Facebook to explain. Went round the corner to Lucia’s instead, excellent food there!

Came across Greens by chance and from the moment we walked in the staff were welcoming nothing was too much trouble. We had cheese toasties with salad and crisps, it was that good I asked what cheese they used unfortunately I couldn’t buy any. We will definitely return and try the delicious cakes on offer

A great place with wonderfully filling food! I had a vegan option and my friend had a veggie option, both of us were impressed. If you fancy a sweet treat I definitely recommend the brownie! The staff were super friendly. I only wish I didn't live so far away, so I could go again!

Good value for money and nice food

My two companions had great sandwiches - tasty and large which came with coleslaw and crisps. I was extremely disappointed with my choice, which cost more. A large sausage roll with salad - it was small with about two mouthfuls of salad. I left feeling hungry still.

What a lovely place to stop for lunch. Felt welcomed as soon as we stepped in the door. Excellent customer service from ALL staff. Food was delicious with plenty choice. Portions were just right. Coffee was lovely and hot. Served quickly. Would highly recommend 5 Stars

Stopped by for a last minute lunch & it was definitely worth it. Service was 2nd to none, even happy to carry on serving while they were closing, no pressure to finish our food & drinks quickly, my sandwich was very filling, great portion sizes. If you are in Grasmere this place is definitely worth a visit

Brilliant range of gluten free food alongside their other options. Was so nice to be able to have something other than a jacket potato when eating out! The waiter even made sure he provided GF hot chocolate as I'd forgotten to say when ordering. They clearly take those of us that need to avoid gluten for health reasons very seriously, it was very reassuring, and really took a lot of the worry out of eating out. Currently sat eating a piece of their delicious Bakewell tart I took home with me! Can't recommend more highly!

Came for lunch while roaming in Grasmere during lake district holiday. very tasty soups and satisfying toasties and milkshakes! dog friendly. very nice would go again, very friendly staff

Excellent in every way! We sat outside on a beautiful day, well situated for watching ‘life’ passing by! It was busy but staff were very attentive and we didn’t have to wait long for our food, which was delicious. I had the Herdwick lamb curry with warm flatbread, raita, mango chutney and salad followed by scone with raspberry jam and clotted cream. The curry was the best I have eaten, the lamb so tender, and the scone fresh and light, with intense raspberry conserve. My husband had soup and a sandwich both of which he thoroughly enjoyed, followed by a substantial portion of Bakewell tart and custard, his favourite! We will certainly remember to eat there again when we next visit Grasmere! We fully recommend it.

We have been to greens many times and always come away with a big smile on faces and a very content belly! The food is fresh and caters for literally every dietary requirement. The staff are delightful and tbh it’s our favourite cafe in the lakes. Thank you it’s an absolute must.

Had the cooked breakfast and it was everything I had hoped for. Nice fresh ingredients, tasted great. Pot of tea which was also lovely and came with extra hot water so got about 3 cups from it. Would certainly recommend and will be back.

Second time coming here and both times amazing service and amazing food. Delicious cheese scone, full English breakfast! Before had a really lovely smoothie too which was good and also the coffee is good too!

We had lunch at Greens as a family with 2 children and a dog. The staff were so helpful with regards to our daughter's allergies, they were able to adapt the menu and advise which options were dairy egg and soy free. The food was lovely and there is an extensive drinks menu too! We will definitely return on our next visit to Grasmere.

Called in for lunch after a morning on the fells. Enjoyed a lovely sandwich and cup of tea. Both were much needed. Staff were really friendly and helpful nothing is too much trouble. You can sit outside or in. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Delicious home cooked food and excellent service. We have eaten here as a family twice now and could not find fault with anything. The sausage roll is delicious as is the sweet potato curry flatbread. Great kids menu too.

Very friendly staff and great food! Definitively a gem in this town🌟 We ordered lamb curry flatbead with additional vegetable soup as part of the meal and an open sandwich - Rarebit with Attitude. Everything tasted delicious but I was most surprised by Rarebit with Attitude, it was so good!!! Sweet and savoury open sandwich that I wish I could eat it everyday😍 Definitely coming back if I come to the town again👍🏻

Brilliant food and service was attentive and quick. We had toasted sandwiches and soup which were substantial, hot and very tasty. The halloumi and falafel wrap was great too. Good value with indoor and outdoor seating.

Wonderful cafe serving excellent lunch options with a lovely shaded patio. We came after a tough hike on a hot day with our dog and enjoyed Buddha bowls and rhubarb sparkles with really nicely flavoured falafels and hummus. Service was very lovely, especially to our parched dog who gladly accepted their offer of a dog bowl with water. We’re already thinking of coming back tomorrow. Update: we came back the next day and ordered takeaway salad and a sandwich. It made the perfect picnic for our hike. Huzzah.

Just popped in for two take away soups one vegetable & one leek and potato both extremely bland. £5 each to end up throwing them away. Both soups just tasted mostly of potato. Would not visit again. The leek and potato was the worst I've ever tasted.

Came to this family run café for a quick lunch during a short stop in Grasmere. It's in an ideal location in the centre of the village, opposite a small park. There are handy parking spaces just across the road. The outside tables were all occupied so I ate inside. The café is bright and very clean with lovely photos of Lakeland scenery on the walls. There's a clean toilet at the back of the café, behind the counter. The café owner was pleasant and courteous, and I was served quickly. They offer a nice selection of toasties and light meals, with lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. As it was fairly early in the day, I had the English breakfast. It came to my table piping hot and fresh, served with lovely thick toast, and portions were generous. The one thing I could fault was that the Cumberland sausage was overcooked on one side, but the rest of the meal was cooked to perfection. Coffee was very good. Overall a satisfying breakfast and not expensive.

It was pleasantly busy but not crowded at 13:15 when we arrived with seating in and out. We had a table for 3 inside and the service was attentive and polite. Good choice for lunch. We had sausage roll, pasty and soup. All good and the Latte in a Herdy mug was particularly good.

Perfect stop at the beginning or end of a walk. I'd like to come back for a proper meal here at some point. The lunch smelled amazing in the cafe. We stopped for some cake and tea. They gave us extra hot water, had a hot vegan brownie (among other vegan options) and when my parents in law got a piece of cake that had a big hole in the bottom (from a baking bubble) they gave them a second piece to make up for eat. The staff were really generous and friendly, and I'd give them more than 5* if I could.

Visited during a trip to Grasmere. Called in at lunchtime with our 3 kids and dog and were seated straight away. Lovely fresh food choices, friendly staff and kids loved the colouring pages they were provided too.

Travelled to the area especially on a Saturday lunchtime and Greens was closed even though advertised as open online. No note on the door etc. shame to have wasted the journey

Best food in Grasmere in my opinion BUT…. rarely is the place open, even when advertised online. I would much rather have a cafe that is open with reasonable food than a cafe with great food but only there to take tourist money.

Nice little place with 3 young men serving lots of vegan options. I Couldn't finish the whole meal and one of the guys went out of his way to make it possible to take it home. So nice! Could park in front of the place for free - for one hour. Dog friendly so many cute dogs around. Don't know why I thought it was 100% vegan, but it isn't. They have breakfast, lunch, soup vegan as well as cakes and plantbased milks for coffee.

We arrived soaking wet for some lunch to warm us up. We had the soup and sandwich meal, generous portions and friendly staff. Others were arriving dripping wet all over the floor and the staff carried on with smiles on their faces.

We popped in for lunch today. Really friendly especially as we had a bit of tired 3 year old. Sandwiches were very tasty and exceptionally fresh. Soup was flavourful and hot which was perfect on a soggy day in the Lakes.

It was hard to find a place that was still serving meals at almost 4 pm, but luckily we found Greens! Delicious food and nice staff.

We've eaten a few times at Greens over the last few years and have never left disappointed, or hungry. Recently two of us had the veggie curry from the specials while the other person had the the rarebit with attitude. All were tasty and excellent value !
