I was expecting really authentic Cantonese taste being from Hong Kong myself, but was left quite disappointed. Disclaimer: I’ve worked in a takeaway shop in the UK so I can really tell the difference between real Cantonese food & UK adapted Chinese food. 🍲 Food: We ordered the 海蜇雞絲 jelly fish chicken cucumber salad which was supposed to be made with a seasame/ peanuts sauce. (Think tahini!) It came with this weird kimchi/ chilli sauce instead with lots of raw spring onions that made the salad taste like a Thai papaya salad instead. Essentially a complete different dish 🤷‍♀️ upon checking older reviews I could find they used to make this dish the correct way, so not sure what happened there. The 火腩豆腐飯 pork belly bean curd rice was essentially the same as 腰果雞丁 chicken cashew nuts, just different ingredients with the same sauce (starch, soy/ oyster sauce). It’s also not supposed to have mangetout peas so it was very weird and giving Tesco Asian veggie mix ☹️ The pork belly 燒肉 in the dish above was nicely done, so it wasn’t too bad. I think their roast meats are well done so probably safe to stick with those if you’re a fan. It’s not horrible, and if you’re not from Hong Kong/ used to British Chinese food you’d probably be fine with it - but it definitely does not taste like home 🤷‍♀️ ✏️Service: We were greeted and seated at our table, and after we made our order, three tables next to us received food before us even though we ordered first, so that was a bit frustrating as we were very hungry haha 😮‍💨 the waitress was nice but was kind of hard to get her attention as she was hiding behind the doorframe most of the time. I believe she’s quite young so that’s understandable 🙂 overall servers were very nice and made us feel welcome. 💵 Price: The dishes above were all about £20 each, which was quite pricey considering what they tasted like. The bill totalled almost £100.

I recently dined at the Green Cottage in Swiss Cottage and had a wonderful experience. The service was top-notch and truly impeccable. The staff were attentive, ensuring my jasmine tea pot was refilled promptly without me having to ask. They also cleaned the table between courses, which I greatly appreciated as I value cleanliness. The food was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the prawn dumplings, roast duck, and prawns with seasonal vegetables, all of which had lovely flavors. However, I was a bit disappointed with the barbecued meats. The fragrance was not as pleasing as I had hoped, which was a letdown. Despite this, the overall experience was excellent. The service and most of the dishes were outstanding. I would highly recommend Green Cottage and will definitely visit again.

It was a late dinner but the food served was still the best especially the roast duck off the bone! It was so flavoursome with a nice texture and taste. The mixed seafood crispy noodles was well cooked and presented, with nice sized prawns and squids etc. Service was excellent with an eversmiling waiter in a smart logo uniform. Will definitely return for the famous duck ( Four Seasons Chinatown you have a competitor that according to my experience now surpasses you for that famous duck title).

We have always been very fond of Green Cottage. We were unable to go to the restaurant this evening so ordered a takeaway via UberEats. The food was expensive - £13 for fried vegetable rice which wasn't fried for example and £21 for a fish dish. We found the sweet and sour dishes in particular very disappointing. Perhaps the food does not travel well but sadly it was a very poor quality meal despite being expensively priced.

It did not get off to a good start. I knew this as my local go-to Cantonese restaurant from my time living nearby in the 1970s. I returned recently, some 50 years hence, to find an empty restaurant serving inedible food (char siu). What's gone wrong? Acceptable Cantonese roast duck (siu knapp), ditto crispy pork (sui-yaw) but INEDIBLE roast pork (char-siu). The char sui was chewy beyond belief, refusing to break down into masticated bite-sized food capable of being swallowed. I had to remove the offending food from my exhausted mouth and overworked teeth! The waiter could see this on my plate, but he made no move to find out about the embarrassing situation. The accompanying "sauce" was over sticky and sweet, offering no piquant counterpoint to the roast meats. Those in the know will remember Hung Toa (Queensway W2) and its first reincarnation, The Four Seasons. They got it right. Why is Green Cottage getting it so badly wrong? I have lived in HK and speak a bit of Cantonese.

I love this place; authentic Chinese food, generous portions and a proper no frills experience! BUT my visit last week was on a cold day and, as usual, we were shown to a table near the door despite there being only 2 other tables occupied. The two waiters then both stood over us waiting for our order. I felt uncomfortable as this was totally unnecessary in a virtually empty restaurant. The food came VERY quickly, too quickly, and the plates were cold and the food lukewarm. I really hope this is not the way this local gem is going.

Staff are sombre & one occasion were shouting at the diners & telling them to eat what had been served to them & then the diners took turns to shout at each other! Entertaining & hilarious? Awful service very rude staff the food has gone down the plates were not clean and had to be changed we are regular customers and I spoke to the owner to ask if the chefs have changed he said no they are the same so I gave him my feedback and told him the food was really not good the food was not seasoned it had no taste and the sauce was all watery and the pastry on the starters was thick. All the food we usually order was completely different he didn’t apologize or take anything off our bill even though the food was not edible and he could see we left it. It’s also expensive. Very disappointing after coming here for over 40 years. No customer service had he at least said sorry and done something about it but nothing he was just not interested so now he has a lost a customer as we will not be returning and that’s also why I’m editing my review as I previously left them an excellent review. I would advise people not to waste your time or money such unpleasant people. However, the staff had no time for us, they were pushing us to hurry along when ordering. 5 times we requested a jug of water, they refused and we had to wait for a refill each time, they hung on to the jug for dear life . Green Cottage Chinese Restaurant, 9, New College Parade, South Hampstead, London NW3 5EP - A Classic Chinese Restaurant that Stands the Test of Time I recently had the pleasure of revisiting an old favourite Chinese restaurant that I used to frequent over almost 4 decades ago. Despite the passing of time, this restaurant is still thriving and maintaining the same high quality of food that I remember from all those years ago. The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and inviting, with traditional Chinese decorations and a friendly staff that makes you feel right at home. The menu has expanded since my last visit, but all the classic dishes I remember are still available and just as delicious as ever. One thing that has changed over the years is the prices. With inflation and the changing times, prices have gone up considerably. However, I still found the prices to be reasonable considering the high quality of the food and the exceptional service. I visited the restaurant with a group of friends, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. From the perfectly cooked noodles to the tender and flavourful meat dishes, everything was prepared to perfection. Overall, I would highly recommend this classic Chinese restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious meal in a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. While the prices may have changed, the quality of the food and the experience are still just as good as they were almost 4 decades ago. I wish the Management, Executive Officers, and The Staff of Green Cottage Chinese Restaurant continued progress. Thanks. Ash

My family and I love this family-run Chinese restaurant and have been going for years and we went last night to celebrate New Year with the extended family - there were 14 of us, and everyone enjoyed the meal. The restaurant has a simple interior, nothing fancy, but is comfortable and food is served quickly, hot and fresh. Staff on the whole are friendly and the children are always treated very well, particularly by our favourite staff member, Mr Chee who is incredibly kind and fun. Dishes are a good size and average price for London. Food is fresh and tasty. We particularly enjoy the BBQ roast duck off the bone, crispy belly pork, salt and pepper squid and prawns, prawns with seasonal vegetables, chicken with bamboo shoots and mushrooms, alongside noodles with bean sprouts. The kitchen is happy to change dishes, e.g my daughter likes her noodles completely plain and sauces left on the side, rather than on top, and they always accommodate. I recently ended a meal with the fresh lychee and loved it! It was so refreshing, cold and sweet! You can take home any left overs as well - always a plus! If you're looking for a good, traditional Chinese restaurant that isn't over-priced or fussy, then I highly recommend Green Cottage.

Looking at the Chinese name of this restaurant, I am pretty sure that it was established by HongKonger, it makes me feel interested in it. To be honest, this dish is definitely not in Hong Kong style, I prefer to have a simple soy sauce with roasted meat more than a lot of sauce with starch, which ruin whole dish. One thing I need to appreciate that, they microwaved the food before serving, of course in Hong Kong we don’t do due to the high demand of roasted meats. About the roasted meats, I am disappointed too. They chopped Char Siu in a very thin way, plus it was very tough. With the large amount of starch sauce, I can’t really the taste of Char Siu. For roasted duck, same problem. Because roasted duck need to be in large pieces, now I know why they chopped Char Siu to be that thin, it would be hard to tear a tough Char Siu when it is thick. Luckily, roasted pork belly is pretty nice, the pork skin is still crispy even after microwaved. And the texture is nice, soft and having some fat - it would be hard to get a tough pork belly though. Roasted meat is the most important part of a Cantonese restaurant, but this restaurant serve western style Cantonese roasted meat, that’s bad.

The Green Cottage has been my first-choice restaurant going back to the 1960s when it was still under the same family management but was called The Asiatique. The Duck-off-the-bone was 'to die for' and the rest of the menu featured other fresh & tasty dishes. Sadly, since returning from Lockdown, I've visited twice (I no longer live in the Swiss Cottage area), The Green Cottage has disappointed. The first time I gave it the benefit of the doubt but sadly this week I need to confirm that it is not up to its pre-Lockdown quality. The duck was only 'so-so' and a couple of the other dishes were still reasonable standard fair but the 'special' tag is no longer there. Hoping for a return to form on my next visit.

Well done service but pricey FOOD We ordered 4 main dishes which were sweet and sour chicken, fried beef Ho fun, egg fried rice and crispy prawn. The dishes do not come with any rice at all or plain rice, they are just on their own, except for fried beef Ho fun which came with noodles. The portion of the dishes varies, like the fried beef Ho fun can satisfy one person though can still be shared. The crispy prawn felt like a starter dish because there were about 10 of those prawns, and my sweet and sour definitely is just for one person. The taste of the sweet and sour chicken was so unique, I know the taste of sweet and sour chicken and their shape is usually round or sphere. I was surprised this shape was longer in size and the taste was almost like crispy shredded beef. This is not a bad thing, it is a good thing, it felt like an authentic sweet and sour chicken, because the emphasis is based on the sauce itself not the actual chicken. The crispy prawn was very delicious. I wasn't too fond with the fried beef Ho fun, it felt acceptional to me. Also the dishes we ordered came with their own sauce, the waiter asked us if we wanted sweet and sour sauce for the crispy prawn in which we accepted. For the drinks, we just ordered water. Water was volvic and it was nicely chilled as you can see when poured on the glass. There were 3 of us and we shared our dishes and I came full up or satisfied. SERVICE Amazing 5 star service! Waiter who seated us and also served us was very nice and polite. Despite the restaurant being small in size, we were treated like it was a 5 star restaurant! The waiter even came to pour and also top up our glass of water! Everywhere was so clean, the windows were clean as you cannot see any streak marks. All tables were clean as well as chairs. Chopstick, forks were also clean. Even one guy was seen cleaning one of the window as we dined. I was shocked the menu were clean, usually restaurant's menus overtime are covered with food and sauce stains which sometimes puts me off. When the waiter came to give us our starter drinks with glasses, I looked at the glass thinking it had a stain, the waiter immediately took it and provided a new one! Toilet was located downstairs just by restaurant entrance, though I didn't try it to see how it looked or how clean it was. Inside decor was nice, felt very Chinesey and asian which I like. Price of the food is very poor because they are pricey, this is the downside! Service is just impeccable! OVERALL I was very happy with the impeccable service, amazing 5 star service. I wish I knew that waiters name so I commend him. Food taste were very good and I never tasted sweet and sour chicken this way before. Portion of the good was meh or good and bad. Price of food is very poor. Our dish order came to almost £50 (around £46-48) including service charge. The picture of the menu I took might be old, I think they changed their prices because of the inflation. I would recommend this restaurant if you want to try your favourite Chinese dish with more authentic taste, and also if you want a 5 star service experience. But only approach this restaurant if you have money to spend for your usual Chinese dish. I feel like going back there and trying out their crispy shredded beef.

The food was nice and the service very attentive. Not particularly comfortable seating but acceptable. Rather on the pricey side for this type of basic establishment.

I ordered for takeaway and ordered the following: Sweet and sour pork. Sesame prawn toast. Special fried rice. Salt and chili chicken wings. The food was alright, nothing particularly outstanding in terms of Chinese food. The sweet and sour pork was more tangy than others I have had and the sesame prawn toast contained too much prawn. The special fried rice was less flavourful than other special fried rice dishes I have had. It is unlikely that I will order from here again if I am in the area.

The steamed fish gave me diarrhoea. I paid £25 for a seabass that had gone off. Do not eat fish here.

Hadn't visited this restaurant for 2 years due to the COVID lockdowns and pandemic, so was very excited to go for lunch to celebrate Year of the Tiger! Ordered green tea, won ton soup, steamed rice, Chinese broccoli, steamed seabass, steamed pork with preserved cabbage. All of the food arrived piping hot and presented very nicely. Really tasty food, nice normal portions that are not oversized,a real treat and with friendly service. They offered complimentary satsumas to us at the end of the meal and we were able to linger before paying the bill. It was nice not to be rushed into leaving. Would recommend this to others as the food is very good.

15 of us went early on Sunday and we were able to have two tables upstairs. The food was great and authentic Cantonese cooking. It wasn’t too salty and I don’t feel very thirsty either after the meal like many other Chinese restaurants. Highly recommended!!

Be prepared for a gastronomic extravaganza! This is an authentic Sichuan hotpot spot with predominately Asian clientele and very fresh ingredients. You start with the most fabulous black wood ear mush
