We walked into this pub at 6.30pm and asked what time they served food until and we were told 7pm. We found a table and ordered food by 6.40pm. At 7.30pm we chased the food and was told the kitchen was “closed now mate “ We pointed out that we had already placed an order and paid for it which he remembered. He apologised, gave us our money back and told us of another pub that served food. No mention of any compensation, even a beer would have been nice. We had travelled up from Bournemouth by train to see family, and as we do, tried to support the smaller businesses. Why bother? We had to walk in the rain to the local Wetherspoon to get food. All the small pubs knock them but they do what it says on the tin. If smaller businesses don’t do this, they won’t survive in this world. Our plan was to visit this pub each evening but this is now lost along with our spending. What was the food like? We will never know. The only positive was the locals were nice. We won’t be back.

Very busy but friendly pub with a great atmosphere,friendly staff and nice food

I've been here quite a few times and they've been happy to take my money but this time I was denied entry by a bonehead on the door because I couldn't prove I was a Wolves supporter (I'm not). I only wanted a pint before my train but the jobsworth wouldn't let me in. Went back to the town and had one there. I come from a place where strangers are welcomed. They aren't here. I travel to Wolverhampton regularly but won't be coming back here.

Couldn’t leave the Black Country without having the ubiquitous, enormous cob with my pint. Always great service in here and the beers are so well kept.

Nice pub selling a good selection of ales ciders and lagers. The beer is a bit pricey but there's a nice atmosphere so I don't mind paying that bit more.

Beer just isn’t what it used to be. Father in law uses this place and complains that the beer is poor. Popped in today to meet a pal. Had a holdens lager - thought you can’t go wrong with a lager - how wrong was I. More life in a gnat’s fart. Took it back to the bar to be met by a dismissive barmaid who simply poured said flat pint into another glass (which was hot!). Needless to say any life that was in the pint was quickly killed. Took the same pint, but now in a second warm glass, back and explained it had no life and needed changing. Next bar person went to pour beer into yet another glass - I explained this had already been done. The first bar person then said that all the glasses were warm. I said that’s not my problem. Shockingly she said “It’s not my problem either! We’re very busy!” No excuse for serving poor beer. Heard a young lad who worked behind the bar helpfully ask if the gas had gone. Rude bar maid then said “I think it’s low!” Thereby an admission of guilt. Second bar maid poured original pint into a third glass and topped it up to add a bit more life. Surely the best customer service would be to apologise (none was offered) and offer to change the drink. Won’t be returning in a hurry. Gone down the pan this place has! Real shame as it used to be a gem of a place!

Took a nostalgia trip a week ago when we had to come to Wolverhampton for business. We left 20 years ago, and it's always risky and usually disappointing to re-visit a favourite haunt but not in this case! Like a little nugget of time travel it was exactly the same inside, the Holdens Special and cheese and onion cobs still amazing, atmosphere chilled and vibrant, and friendly welcoming staff. Thank you all, it made me a bit emotional! Keep doing what you're doing, you and your pub are a rare gem.

Lovely place to go for a quiet drink

My cousin & I had chicken & mushroom pies. The filling was like sloppy, thin soup. A few pieces of chicken & mushroom were few & far between. A big disappointment.

Lovely pub with a great atmosphere, plenty of space and right in the middle of everything. The food looked great although I didn't have any this visit.

Great experience via staff member who was very efficient. Likewise with kitchen staff and the meal was extremely tasty plus great value. :-D

Cheese and onion cob and a glorious pint of Batham's Best. Doesn't get much better than this.

A nice locals pub tucked away, but enjoy the GWR atmosphere, which I recall from the '60's and nice selection of ales.

Haven't tried the food yet, but it looked nice and very reasonable. We stopped off here when my daughter had her prom. The lady who served us was very friendly and welcoming and the pub its self is nicely decorated and some nice seating outside. We are definitely coming again and next time for some grub.

Popped in for a quiet pint and ended up in the middle of a Bike night.. Absolutely fantastic evening, beer was flowing, music, with Free burgers and Rasta pasta.. Great chat with the bikers and staff. Again a fantastic night and thank you

Good Bathams when it's good from the brewery. Great selection of other ales and plenty of snacks and a selection of cooked food. Brilliant staff and a lovely atmosphere in a clean and well kept building with a railway theme throughout.

This pub has retained its unique dated look and atmosphere. Good beers and a decent, well cooked range of unpretentious food.

Needs smartening up outside plus gets lots of rough sleepers walking by making noise ,not good or appealing especially to those staying in premier inn near by if fancied a drink going out or coming in

Called in here today as I was in the area. Lovely pub, good food & dog friendly. Shame I'm not local or I'd be a regular.

Great place great customer service and great atmosphere

The best place in town for a meet up and a pint..or three

Staying at the nearby Premier Inn we decided to eat elsewhere than the TableTable, opting for this location - online we saw they did meals so headed over, just a 5-min walk parallel to the train tracks... only to find when we got there they stopped taking orders at 7pm so had to get an order in quick! The place is railway-themed and feels small upon entry until you realise it actually goes back some way, once past the bar. It's not a young trendy pub by all means (no Wifi, for example) but has a lot of history around and seems popular with the older crowd, quite tranquil in atmosphere. There was live music towards the end of their deceptively long lounge (but we stayed near the bar where it was quieter). Our meals arrived fairly quickly but were pretty much dropped off by a waitress who hastily vanished; I had to hunt around for cutlery and condiments - it seems they'd all been cleared up in advance of 7pm, so it felt odd no help was offered with that. Nonetheless, the meals were enjoyable, quite traditional and filling. My steak pie had a nice rich tomato flavour to the gravy, and the chips were thick to soak up the juice. My colleague's faggots were likewise meaty with a dark gravy, nice and heart-warming. There's a good range of varied ales; I tried out some different ones but settled for Golden Glow, a 4% session ale that was quite palatable and went down easily. We were later joined by some friends and a good four hours of continued drinking proceeded, until kicking-out around 2300. Although open on sundays they didn't do meals then, else we'd have returned there. But when in the area, I'm more than happy to eat again, given the variety on offer and the reasonable prices.

A fine proper boozer with decent ales and good local style food with décor that includes reminders of the pubs association with the railways.

We came here on Saturday Night, hoping to eat, but all they had was a few cobs on the bar. Why do they stop serving food so early? It's laziness: another 6 hours of trading and they shut the kitchen. On the plus side, the ale is superb; whoever is doing the cellarwork knows their craft.

Reasonably priced food including local delicacies like grey peas and bacon, and hot pork baps. The traditional Holden's dark Mild beer was fabulous, and selling well.

We didn't try the food so can't comment on it other than to mention there's a good selection at reasonable prices including cobs on the bar cheese and onion also ham with mustard available if wanted. Good selection of real ales at reasonable prices, the bar area is small but well presented with seating and tables extending far into the back. Everywhere was clean and tidy with the barmaid quick to clear and wipe down tables after they'd be vacated. Situated where it is it's like a hidden gem of a pub but it's no secret as everyone has heard of it.

Good beers. Comfortable. Interesting pub.

Great real ale pub. Holdens always on and regularly changing guest ales. There on the Real ale finder app too, so no excuses when in Wolverhampton. Also I can personally recommend a cheese and onion cob.

Love this place. Great local pub. Bostin Black Country fittel (great local food). Great atmosphere. Great decoration. Friendly staff. Everything you would want a pub to be. It doesn't get better for a local pub. This is a place of and for legends.

Gone down hill over the last few months. Me and a huge group of other blokes come here exclusively for the Bathams and we know being let down. I don't know what kind of pub isn't able to keep stock of their most popular ale. Really poor management.

Holdens Golden Glow is excellent

Iconic pub that serves a superb pint of Holdens & Bathams beer. The addition of a train departure screenisreally handy also if stopping off for a couple before getting the train. Food pretty average though.

What an absolute gem of a pub. This is what a proper little boozer should be all about. Great to experience a few cracking real ales in a pub that brought back memories of what it was like before the chain pubs took over. If this brilliant pub was anywhere near where I live I'd be in there every day! Timbo

I wrote a review last June saying that the quality of some of the food, especially the chips, was not what it was before the refurbishment & change of ownership. Sadly, that's still the case. The beer is very well kept, and the staff and the atmosphere friendly and welcoming, but the food still lets it down. Chips were soggy, greasy and tasted as though the deep fat fryer hadn't been changed in days, and the faggots (which used to be so good) had strange hard bits and balls of fat in them. I'm giving 4 stars as The Wessie is still one of my favourite pubs, but please can you try harder with the food?

Great local beer, with the best pork bap ever! Definitely come back next time I'm in Wolverhampton.

Great place for a great drink but not the food I had. I had the cheese and potato pie. It was basically a jacket potato without skin in a dish. Mashed spud with sprinkling of cheese on top. Three tiny onion slices at the very bottom. No taste whatsoever. My friends chips were not as good as they had been previously.

I was meeting a friend here as I the place has a good reputation as an old school ale pub, and I was not disappointed. A good selection of ales and bags of atmosphere. The Railway themed decor inhances the experience. In a way the pub is very much like the TARDIS, it is a lot bigger than I realised, or it appears from the front bar.

Very characterful with all the railway memorabilia. Good classic ales on tap and really cheap too.

Went to try Black Country grey peas and bacon, they were fabulous ! served with bread , ideal as a starter or light lunch. We followed them with faggots, mash and peas and chicken pie, mash and peas for hubby. Both were excellent piping hot and plentiful. The staff were really welcoming and the open fire was great. Can't wait to return....

This pub is a bit of a hidden jem, although it was packed when we went on a Saturday night. Had Bathams bitter which was the best tasting I've ever had including at the Vine ( Bull and Bladder ).

Don't know coz website says open at 11 & doesn't open until 11.30 this am. Had to catch train at 11 30.This pm shut for a private party!! The whole pub...not happy.

I have been to this pub on four occasions now, usually just for a drink. Staff always efficient and friendly, excellent beer at reasonable prices. I am not a local so only visit when in Wolverhampton. Last visit was Friday evening, very busy on the run up to Christmas! It was the first time I had ordered food, Fish and Chips and Faggots and chips. They were both excellent, piping hot tasty and very reasonable priced. Definitely worth a visit.

Great pub with lovely food. Very spacious and a big conservatory with a seating are outside. Service was very friendly and prompt and a super selection of ales, lagers, beers and generally every drink possible. Very relaxing and we passed quite a few hours no problem. A hidden jem only 5mins from the train station and 15mins walk into the city. It was not our first time there, and will definitely not be our last.

This is such a great pub! Not tarnished by the usual bland marketry of the chain's. The staff are lovely and know all the customers by name (and their dogs) and it still has it's open fire :) The extension is lovely, and the food is wholesome and such a good price, oh, and the chips are to die for! Delicious! You will not be disappointed if you visit here, unless you like all your pubs the same of course. Enjoy!

As a traditional pub, this is close-to-perfect. Nice well-kept ales, hearty pub grub, full of railway memorabilia to reflect the local history, brilliant staff, and reasonably priced. If travelling my train, I would intentionally change at Wolverhampton just as an excuse to come here!!

Loved it, hosted a baby shower there it was a lovely room we had an both staff an regulars were very welcoming.

I found a perfect pub, and of all places it’s in Wolverhampton, somewhere that I - unfairly - hadn’t expected to be very nice (it’s actually full of beautiful old buildings). Conveniently, the Great Western is just a five-minute walk from the station, and even has a screen showing the train times. If you’re changing trains here, it’s well worth skipping the next one (or two or three) to pay a visit. It’s a traditional Victorian pub, grade II-listed, its red bricks matching the nearby railway arches. It’s like walking back in time to the Victorian era. With its extensive selection of well-kept ales, it’s also a CAMRA favourite, being a previous winner of CAMRA National Pub of the Year. Recommended!

Best grey peas and bacon. Proper draught beer, not the normal fizzy Amber golden offerings. Opens 9 to 5, only Saturday evenings. Good staff and parking.

This must be one of the best pub's in Wolverhampton, great beer, great food and friendly staff, all you could ask for.

A very nice pub tucked away almost under the railway arches. A combination of traditional pub, but with the range of real ales of somewhere more adventurous, and a diner. On the day I was there the kitchen was open until 7 pm - this nearly caught me out as I thought it was _from_ 7pm, but no. I had a half of mild which was nice and a pint of hoppy ale which was also, and that to wash down my supper of faggots, chips and peas. That was as Black Country as ... well, really as Black Country as having a supper of faggots, chips and peas in a pub by the railway arches in Wolverhampton. Yow do ay get more bostin than that.

Great beer & cobs, good value for money

Nice pub if you like that nostalgia vib and like to feel you are part of the old railways scene, situated virtually underneath the main Wolverhampton railway line it won't win and rewards for its outlook.

Excellent quality real ales and a good choice of them. Clean and tidy pub, with several different bar areas including the traditional and a bright and airy conservatory. Basic food dishes and snacks.

Beautifully kept beer served by passionate and attentive staff - charming interior and perfect atmosphere. Nothing not to love.

Excellent pub about 5 minutes walk from Wolverhampton Station. Six cask ales on handpump when I last visited including a mild. Relatively quiet after the Spurs game at Molineux.
