Lovely Christmas day dinner, the atmosphere wasn't as comfortable as I would have wanted or expected for Xmas day which I think was down to various different tined seatings but still a lovely meal and great food.

We were a party of 16 friends. We booked our Christmas meal in August, paid a deposit and chose our menu options two weeks prior to the date. Such a well-organised evening. We had one long table and everything was ready when we arrived. Some had 3 courses and others had two. The staff were excellent at getting the food out together, all piping hot and well-presented. And quality of food was excellent. We couldn’t fault the service all brilliantly managed by Aurora. Thank-you for a smashing evening.

Great food, lovely atmosphere. We went for specials fish night. We both had grilled skate which was one of the best we’ve had. We will def return to try something else on the wonderful menu.

Went for Christmas lunch with friends. Lovely environment and felt very festive. We all had 3 courses. Different starters and desserts which were all excellent and we all had the Turkey as main course. Not quite as good as starters but still very acceptable. The main star of our meal however was the waitress Kristie. She was absolutely brilliant. Welcoming, smiles, great sense of humour and just made us feel so welcome. Kept us up to date with our orders as it was very busy and just made us feel special. When her shift was over she came to say goodbye to us which was a nice touch as well. All in all a very pleasant experience.

Had a lovely meal last night. Just wanted to give a mention to our server Angel who was friendly, chatty and most of all extremely cheerful. Thank you Angel. We will definitely be returning.

This is our 3rd successful visit. We are so pleased we discovered this pub. Our family always meets to choose our real christmas trees locally every year, and then we make our way to the Duke of York. It never disappoints. A nice warm pub with a natural fire. Great large cooked full English. My son always opts for the smoked salmon and scrambled egg. Both are so good. There is plenty of toast, too. It was lovely to sit in a relaxed pub, not feeling rushed to enjoy our treat together. Part of our family tradition, making memories together.

Excellent service, pleasant atmosphere, food reasonably priced fillet steak was a little tough. Every thing else was good. Sticky toffee pudding was delicious.

We visited this evening and I had the Chicken Skewers as a main and it was extremely overcooked and dry and I couldn’t eat a lot of it - I did tell the waitress and she said she would tell the manager, of which we saw her do - when it came to paying the bill, there was no apology or an offer of reduction at all, which we were very surprised at, will definitely be looking at alternative venues, which is a shame as we’ve been supporting the business for a fair few years !

Food was pretty average, I would say. The dessert I had (Tiramisu) was not good at all. Certainly NOT like any tiramisu I have ever had before!

Staff welcomed me in and served my pint of Fosters quickly engaged in chat and Thai chef in kitchen acknowledging me; think she was a friend of Nee my Thai House girlfriend.A enjoyable experience!

Great relaxed atmosphere, fantastic food, and nothing is to much trouble

The lady who welcomed us on arrival was very nice and polite. However, the subsequent waitress was very abupt, bordering on rudeness. Just before leaving I reported a water leak in the gents toilet, it was obvious they knew about it and didn't care!

Great Pub! Went for lunch there today. Nice decor inside and out. Great menu, food was well presented and we all enjoyed it. Staff were really lovely and had great interpersonal skills. Good amount of parking available. We had meals, deserts, drinks and couple extras and it was about £110 for four of us, so I recon that’s pretty good? Anyway we’ll be back again soon. Cheers

Lovely roast sirlloin of beef dinner. Staff very friendly, especially our waitress Phoebe who was very attentive and efficient.

Being dog friendly is a huge plus.. if you're after some good steak, then I can't recommend Duke of York more.. Easily the best steak around in Essex. Atmosphere is so welcoming and staff are lovely. Keep it up !

Great little pub with lovely staff and good food. Dogs allowed and are very welcome inside and out. Clean venue with a good size car park.

I have been here many times, always had good meals. We had family visiting from Australia & my cousin is gluten intolerant. There was a wonderful choice of gluten-free food on the menu. It was refreshing to see how much choice there actually was. We had a very nice meal & so glad that I had recommended this pub to her.

Lovely place and staff but the food was awful. Calimari and roast beef inedible. Vegetables cold and only the centre of the Yorkshire edible. Very disappointing

We chose this pub as we have two people in the party with food intolerances, one gluten free and one dairy free. We were welcomed as soon as we walked in and shown to our table which was clean and in a bright well decorated area. I really liked the separate gluten free and dairy free menus which made it so easy to pick something to eat. The waitress was really polite and knowledgeable and the wait for the food was acceptable considering it was cooked to perfection.

Really lovely place! We went there for a christening/birthday celebration and everything went so smooth. The food was amazing, the service was really fast and the staff couldn't be more helpful. Highly recommended.

Rewriting my previous review. Food wasn't great, not as nice as previous visits. The amount of flies buzzing around the restaurant was enough to put us off. Then to top it off, a couple of us had woken up in the night and the next morning quite unwell. Maybe a coincidence and completely unrelated, however, given the amount of flies in the restaurant, it makes it hard not to try and put two & two together and question the hygiene of the food being served. Wouldn't return anytime soon.

Great place, I went for breakfast and had the most delicious hallumi and egg muffin. Can't comment on the atmosphere as it was quite early but has a lovely feel with friendly staff

Had the fillet steak with peppercorn sauce. The steak was lovely, only thing I would have liked was the option of some veg but only had onion rings and garlic mushrooms to choose from. Dessert was lovely too. Unfortunately the food service was very slow and after chasing up a couple of times we were told they were short staffed in the kitchen. I understand this was unexpected but it would have been better if they had communicated this early on to set expectations. Otherwise the venue, food and serving staff was very nice.

I don’t normally write a bad review, but my young daughters took me out for a meal for my birthday And the waiter never came back with their £13 Change It was not offered to us And we never told him to keep it We would’ve left a tip I’ve probably £5 But I thought it was disgusting that he just assumed he could Not bring our change back After all it up to the customer if they want to pay a tip ?

Had a great family 'birthday' lunch. Exceĺlent food. Latest menus have themed days of week, and on Thursday it was Steaķ and Grill, with good discounts.

I booked my hen do here on 29th june 2024, I'm so pleased I did , the food was delicious 😋and everyone enjoyed the food they ordered. Staff members went above and beyond to help us. The restaurant it self was clean tidy and lovely. I would definitely recommend to others. 😊😊

I dont normally right poor reviews but this really deserved it. Really disappointed with my meal.. pork looked like to bits of bacon and was cold and dry with half being very fatty. Potatos had rotten parts. Could have done with be even slightly crispy. Veg appauling. Yorshire pud great

Love this place but went for breakfast today and found it very disappointing when the good is usual very nice toast was cold and like bread mushrooms were tinned not fried and was tastless egg was overcooked and bacon was dry and cold cone on duke of york your breakfast are better then this poor value for the price not sure il be vomming for breakfast anytime soon

Service was good but the food was dire! Home made steak pie came with no veg. Tasted very salty and gravy the same. Wouldn’t return I’m afraid. Our waitress was great.

Very nice time at the Duke of York. Food was nice, the setting is lovely and the staff are friendly. We did have to wait an hour for our food and there was quite a wait for the drinks but will defiantly visit again

A few friends and I went out for dinner last night, we had a really amazing time. Food came quickly and was yum. Our waitress Kristy was amazing and attentive. Would go again. :)

Dog friendly, excellent brunch, fabulous garden area. Great place to meet up with family. Our 3 yr old nephew enjoyed the garden swing.

Had dinner here on Sunday night. It wasn’t busy but what spoilt it was the two people serving seemed a tad fed up and doing the bare minimum. Couldn’t find them most of the time to order more drinks or get the bill. Food is decent so if the service was improved it would be a much better experience.

Top menu, top staff! I have been all over Essex in search of something special for a family treat. Since the change in management the service, decor and menu are top, top class. On Sunday they offer all roasts together with the weekly menu. Word of warning, not a criticism The kids meals are massive, 1 between 2 is enough. Top, top special venue for something a bit special. We'll be back soon

I enjoyed the turkey roast dinner,turkey soft. potatoes were too hard though . other guests did not enjoy there roast dinners unfortunately. The garden was lovely 🤩 would go back when weather's nice

Visited on a wednesday as the pub had been recomended by friends and offers 241 on fish dishes. Was thoroughly impressed with the experience from start to finish. Was politely greeted at the door to the well decorated pub by Chris. He was very friendly and walked us to our table. The pub was very busy so we was expecting a long wait, but Chris turned out to be our server and was back over quickly to take a drinks order and talk us through the menu, explaining dishes and suggesting sides. When the food arrived we were shocked at how big the portions were, expecially when they were on 241. The food was delicious and i would thoroughly recommend. Throughout our meal Chris checked on us and got us more drinks, he looked busy but was always smiling and polite. We couldn't fit in desserts as we was too full, but those around us that had them they looked great. We couldn't have been happier with the whole visit and Chris played a big part in that. He is a real credit to the business. We will definetly be returning!

Popped in for lunch without booking, food was good, service was excellent, atmosphere good, beer was ice cold, what more could you want.

We go here regularly and have for years. The food is lovely and the staff are great. They are friendly, welcoming and efficient. Lovely atmosphere. We’ve tried lots of the dishes on the menu and have never been disappointed.

Took my mum for lunch for Mother’s Day last Friday and was extremely disappointed. I have visited a lot recently and have always been impressed, however my mum ordered the fish pie which was cold in the middle. She then ordered the steak sandwich which took a long time to come. I had finished my meal long before hers arrived. The table next to us also sent back raw fish twice! I had bought my mum a voucher previous to this visit which she is now very reluctant to use!

Cannot fault this restaurant. The sea bass with chorizo sausage is incredible. Think I've had it 3 times now and never disappoints. Been here twice in the last month. Once with large group of friends and once with another couple. Definitely my favourite pub in the area. Shout out to the very dry and absolutely hilarious 18 yo waiter that served us. He had us in fits. Sorry didn't get your name.

Excellent food, good choice and also 2for1 daily deal giving really good value. Clean, bright surroundings and furniture. Really bad service as not enough staff maybe due to a function. After 15mins had to ask where our drinks were - they had been forgotten about! Then after the meal just left - had to askfor bill then eventually we went to desk to pay as no-one came to get our money. This is the first time we have experienced bad service here - please get more staff as it spoilt our lunchtime

Sitting here in Duke of York. I am thoroughly disappointed in roast lunch. Service was like lighting but served us cold plates tepid gravy. All plated food was not hot enough vegetables served separately were ok. I will.not be returning.

Nice Roast dinner. Good portions of veggies, huge Yorkshires - staff attentive and helpful. Meal could have been hotter as lukewarm but couldn’t stand the bother of sending back. Dogs welcome.

paid a lot for meal which was nice shame about pancakes which was not homemade and they put lemon and sugar on.complained they offered us free coffees by management but its a no no by the phone call this morning on a sensitive issue nothing to do with pancakes.

I had the turkey roast which I honestly can’t fault it tasted great. Only thing is my friend got fish another day and ordered it again and it came a lot smaller which was a little confusing and disappointing for the same price. The deserts look amazing though, great options!!

Just had a really nice meal with my partner. The food was excellent in very nice clean and comfortable surroundings the staff were very efficient and friendly. In all five star will be eating there again soon.

Visited here for the first time but won’t return. First impression with the waitress was not very friendly and seemed to get muddled when we were ordering our drinks and food. Waited nearly 30 minutes for our drinks and then one didn’t arrive. Had to ask three times for the final drink to be served. Waited another long time for the meals to arrive. Two of us ordered the bubble and squeak with poached egg but both of our eggs were hard boiled so spoilt the meal. Another person had ham, egg and chips and both chips and fried eggs were overcooked and dry. Waited a while to get the waitress to give us the bill and pay and again she was unfriendly.

Very cosy pub, great 2 for 1 deals, and great food with big Portions in general, Megamix and Turkey roast are a must have on a Monday, very happy with the food and friendliness of the staff.

We were very disappointed with the Christmas meal, it was cold and covered in gravy. The vegetables were very sparse. It did not come up to the standard we expected.

The place has a nice ambience and is smart the food was ok, I had the pork belly and it was very fatty and stringy and the crackling impossible to eat it was very chewy. The veg which is served separately was very underdone, hard carrots had Brussels, couldn't even cut the brocoli. There were 8 of us and all the starters were good, sausage and mash was good, and the kids enjoyed their meals, so I would go again just not have the pork belly. The service was excellent.

Some of the worst food I have ever eaten. Soggy microwaved vegetables and salty roast dinner. Supposed to have live music but couldn't hear anything. Will never return

As a family visited the Duke of York for a festive meal off the set menu and was left disappointed. We were presented with a table for 8 of us but it was two tables of four put together at different heights meaning we were separate. Numerous drinks were forgotten after the first drinks order and constant reminder asking where they are after a decent amount of time and no other drinks were offered throughout our meal we had to go the bar and order, even drinks we had to ask to order at the table didn’t come and were still on the bill even though paid at the bar to bring to our own table had to ask to be taken off. A bottle of wine was not given in a wine cooler just as a bottle which is odd? Bottle of still water with no glass of ice or lemon. Nothing felt synced together. The Christmas crackers rubbish was not collected up and was left in a mess on the table no empty glasses were taken. Starters were lovely good portion sizes and looking forward to a good meals. However mains came out and was a different question, the roast potatoes were raw and has to ask for new ones, the veg was falling apart and to top off no Yorkshire with a roast dinner which is compulsory for a roast dinner. Then realising it wasn’t mentioned on the menu but who does a roast dinner without a Yorkshire? The turkey & gravy was lovely though. Desserts it was a mix - cheese board was nice (had to ask for the appropriate cutlery for it though to cut the cheese) , but the brownie was dry. The service was poor and not attentive or personable, there was no check back on our food, plates took ages to be cleared, no sauces offered after the last plate was put down especially for a roast dinner. Unfortunately we had asked the service to be removed after waiting 15 minutes for a bill, then extra time sorting out the drinks we didn’t receive and then more time asking for the card machine. Very sorry but would not recommend after this experience after hearing great things as well..

A party of 13 went for the festive dinner with a live soul band. Everything was excellent. Food, service ( special mention for Olivia who was brilliant) atmosphere and music. Quite often Christmas meals are average but the meals tonight were excellent. It was just a wonderful friendly atmosphere. Thank you so much.

We came here for our first meal out with our 8 week old baby and couldn't have been happier. The staff were so lovely with us and our daughter and immediately made us feel at ease. In addition the food was incredible and the cocktails were lovely. We can't wait to come back. The staff were what made our night.

Just returned from works Christmas dinner. Food was excellent and very well presented. Tribute artist was really good. Well worth the cost and an excellent night out. Thank you to all the staff involved.

Went for breakfast with my partner, breakfast was excellent, partner had the English Breakfast, was as much as he could eat, I had the vegan breakfast, was superb, service was brilliant, atmosphere was welcoming, cannot to return

Lovely food as always. Great service and friendly team. We had our two Grandsons with us of 17 months old (they have been a few times) and they were accommodated well as usual BUT there was a dog, who was sat opposite. Whilst we appreciate dogs are welcome, we feel that there should be a small set area where these diners are sat. Our grandsons were scared of the dog so consequently were upset and didn’t eat their meal. We tried to face them so they couldn’t see the dog but it wasn’t working for them. We not only feel that other diners should be taken into consideration for people wary of dogs but also hygiene and any allergy sufferers. Consequently as the boys were disturbed we didn’t wait to have desserts nor coffees, which was a shame.

We were offered to get back to the Duke of York and this time we had a lovely Friday dinner. Food was lovely and the dessert menu was quite impressive, offering a big variety of desserts and not only limited to the classic cheesecake and sticky pudding! All lovely We will fo back for sure Thank you

We had the roast 2 for 1 very nice not the same as when you pay full price. Just something missing not sure what. Good value for money with a lovely sweet.

Myself and my daughter called in on the off chance for breakfast. We had never visited before and was immediately impressed by the decor. It was very quiet and the breakfast was just delicious. I had the full English and my daughter had the avocado.smoked salmon with poached egg, together with tea/coffee, and toast with butter and marmalade. All delicious! We will be back. Thank you!

Surprised my partner with a family dinner here for his birthday, and am so glad I did. When we arrived, we were shown to our table that had ample space for our party of 2 adults and two children. We were offered children's menus. The children were happy to have options for starters, which they don't always get on a kids menu. We attended on Thursday, which was 241 steak and grill night. We were offered drinks. The children asked for orange juice with lemonade. When I asked the price, I heard the children's drink was £1.60. The drinks that arrived were huge. When we received the bill where we were charged £2.50 for each drink. My partner went for a raspberry rum and lemonade. I had a large merlot. We were both happy with our drinks. My partner had the prawn and crayfish cocktail. He thoroughly enjoyed it. The children went for garlic bread and spring rolls. The garlic bread was good quality with minced garlic, and the spring rolls looked perfectly crisp. Both dishes got the thumbs up. For mains, the children went for the fish gougons with chips and scampi and chips. Again, the food looked fresh and crispy. Both adults went for the mixed grill, which was incredibly tasty and more enjoyable, knowing we were only paying for one dish. Everything on the plate was flavoursome. We had to ask for extra nbq sauce for the ribs, but we both thoroughly enjoyed the dish. I ordered peppercorn sauce for the 4 oz steak, not realising it was an extra cost, but the gravy boat housed a very generous portion that was very tasty. For afters, Mr. picked the baked strawberry and white chocolate cheesecake. I went for the pineapple upside down cake. The cheesecake was phenomenal. The pineapple upside-down cake was not quite as tasty and looked more like a rum cake than the cake I used to get at school with custard. It was a nice cake. Would have liked the option of custard instead of ice cream, but it was a good desert. The cheesecake was next level. Service was pleasant. It was a little slow at times but it appeared only 2 staff were on the floor and the restaurant was quite busy. I asked for the bill and eventually had to go ask at the bar. I received an apology because the server forgot. We were overcharged for one of the children's starters, but it was quickly corrected. All in all, it was a lovely night out. The venue was nicely decorated and very clean. Staff were courteous. We will definitely return.

A delightful meal. With great service and with a 2 for 1 main deal. Very reasonably priced. We will be returning and I have no hesitation in recommending it.
