Good - ribs, 1/4 crispy duck, young chow rice was okay. Bad - starters pretty bland, duck rolls were awful. Chicken with cashew nuts still had bones in the meat, fillet steak Cantonese wasn’t fillet, and was served with spoons hotter than lava making it impossible to serve. Bill was very expensive — service was acceptable at best but not great. Waited ages for meals, table half cleared on multiple occasions, and then left for ages. We chose not to pay the service charge which was optional, and got back chat off the staff for doing so. Definitely won’t be going back, left the £10 off voucher “gift” on the table. Hopefully you’ll be more lucky if you go and give it a go but read the reviews and take heed of the poor ratings.

Lovely meal for 5 of us tonight for my husband's birthday. There was only us in so atmosphere was minimal but football was on the telly so didn't feel out of place. Food was lovely and service from the lady was spot on. Haven't been here in about 15 years but will return.

Once the food had arrived, we saw that one of the dishes they had served wasn’t what we had ordered. They charged for a “Chinese Tea” when we had just ordered warm water, when asked they just said “yeh”. Despite both of these, they still put a service charge on the bill. Wouldn’t be coming back until correct food is served and some manners are taught.

Absolutely my favourite Chinese restaurant. I highly recommend the authentic Chinese dishes especially the dim sum which is homemade and the Mapo tofu

Best in town 💯 I was excited to have dinner in this real Hong Kong style restaurant with such great prices. We ordered 3 dishes including sea bass boiled with ginger and rice wine, boiled cuttlefish larvae with beef cypress leaves, and pan-fried stuffed tofu. Simply delicious 🤤. Sure will come back definitely. 👍🏻

Nice staff Delicious foods But some food have to order the day before

Really dont like being harsh but this was the worst Chinese i have ever had. We went here for a birthday so didnt really have a choice but will not be returned. Simply put the food is just tasteless. Salt and pepper without any flavour, bland egg fried rice and chicken wings with a funny taste. Its also hugely overpricing. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere. The nice were nice but that does not make up for the dissapointing food.

The side dishes are good, the claypot rice and the side dishes are delicious👍🏻

Lovely food, great service. My partner and I are vegetarian and had the veggie dim sum platter to start which was delicious 😋 lovely flavours especially the spring rolls and samosas. For mains I had vegetarian chicken with curry sauce and noodles, which was again super tasty - I'm not a fan of spicy food and this was tangy and flavoursome without being overpowering. My partner had veggie chicken in satay sauce and noodles - very well flavoured, just the right amount of spice, fresh ingredients. We were very satisfied and surprised that the restaurant wasn't busier on a Saturday night - I can only think that people have been influenced by the negative reviews here which we are finding hard to fathom. Service was also excellent with staff who were attentive without being overbearing. Already planning our next trip!

the food was ok, no better than average, but the price wasn’t. £16.85 for Singapore Vermicelli and a diet coke is ridiculous and then they wanted to charge me £2 of service charge on top! Never again!

Came for Chinese lunar year. The food was absolutely amazing and fresh. The only downside was that we were in there for about 3/4 hours. Waited around 1.5hrs for our starters and then in between courses it took a very long time too.

They get a lot of things right. Service is friendly without being over familiar snd intrusive. Background music is audible but still sllows normal conversation.. Food is always tasty and well presented

Booked a table for 7pm on Sunday, arrived on time to a confused waitress, who was clearly not expecting us. The restaurant is small and cramped and with it being busy, myself, my partner and two young sons (6 and 7) were trying our best just to stay out of the way. It was really awkward and uncomfortable but after a while we were escorted upstairs by two (really lovely and professional) waitresses, who quickly cleared and cleaned a large table for us. They apologised profusely for our wait and brought us some prawn crackers. No sooner had we taken our coats off, another woman came over and demanded we move off the table and go back downstairs. The young waitresses were visibly horrified by her interruption. Though the woman was rude and aggressive, we got up out of our seats without fuss, reasoning that they must have a larger group for this table and that a small table had now become free downstairs. On getting back downstairs, I scanned the room and was confused to see that there were no free tables. The woman that had removed us from the table then said, "Yeah come back later." Absolutely baffled by this point, I calmly explained to her that we had booked a table for 7pm. "Yeah yeah I know but come back later..." I stood stunned, waiting for a further explanation or, at the very least, an apology but she just turned on her heels and stomped off. Everyone was looking at us and I felt so embarrassed. We went outside into the cold with my boys, who were now both in tears. We rarely treat ourselves to a meal out; they had been looking forward to it all day and were really hungry after all the messing about. Luckily my youngest had managed to snaffle a prawn cracker before the woman had swiped the basket off the table 😂 The one thing (other than the lovely waitresses who had first seated us) that we have to thank the Gonbay for is that, on being turned away from their cramped, sweaty 'restaurant', we were luckily able to get a last minute table at Red Chilli Qingdao Restaurant. And wow, what an amazing experience! Beautiful setting and incredible service (I'll save the rest for another review!) We had a wonderful evening in the end, so cheers to the Gonbay! Safe to say, we will never darken your doorstep again.

The food was not value for money. It was for collection and was provided in a foil box while they charged higher rates . Very bland to taste.

My family and I have been loyal customers to the Altrincham restaurant for many, many years. Having moved to Urmston we have since been ordering online for delivery from the Sale restaurant. It was previously mentioned that delivering to Urmston was ‘too far’ yet the website accepts the address and even adds a ‘surcharge’ due to the distance. Bringing the delivery charge to £6.00(!) It was disappointing to receive a phone call asking for me to collect the order as Urmston is ‘too far’. I explained that Google maps shows it is a 12 minute drive which they disputed (and claimed it was a 25 minute drive). I explained I would welcome a refund and take my custom elsewhere (given I had placed a £70 order and was feeling somewhat of a burden to them). They declined and agreed to deliver but said I’d have to wait an hour. Upon delivery the lady went on to complain about the distance and stated she would not be delivering to here again. Fortunately for them, there won’t be another opportunity as we will take our repeat custom elsewhere.

glad I didn't see the negative reviews before I went as it might have put me off, but we called by chance as the takeaway I normally used was closed. it was Xmas eve, plenty of people eating in but they were happy to sort me a takeaway, and my whole family was impressed with the food, from the light fluffy rice, to the very fresh and crispy beef. flavours were great and not too overwhelming. we will certainly be ordering from here again and visiting the restaurant both here and in Altrincham

Worst ever takeaway, I have been here several times before and has been nice, tonight’s takeaway was disgusting, just awful.. chicken and sweetcorn soup, like water and no taste, we got crispy shredded duck, not even crispy or shredded and tasteless.. will never go back here again !!!

Visited here recently with friends. One of the meals was inedible due to the amount of fat content in the meat. Although this was discounted off the bill there was a standard 10% service charge included which amounted to £18. For these reasons we will not be returning. As there was nobody else there on a Saturday night, I think they need to start asking themselves some serious questions.

First time here and will certainly be back. Very friendly and caring staff and food was delicious!

Unfortunately considering the price the food really didn't deliver. Underseasoned and just a little lacking. The restaurant was also very cold whilst we were eating.

Gathering with our primary school teacher/vice principal was a delightful experience. We had a wonderful meal, and the service was excellent.

Ordered a takeaway for two. Whilst the ribs were excellent, the main meal of chicken in oyster sauce was disappointing as it was really ‘bulked out with a large quantity of onions’ As regular weekend take away customers, we look forward to our weekend treat. In fact we hadn’t experienced food from this restaurant for some time but as our regular Chinese takeaway was closed we thought we’d give the GB a try. However as the quality of food was extremely disappointed we won’t phone again !

Having made a reservation for 6, we arrived on time. The temperature outside was 0 degrees C. We were led to our table which was upstairs and although the room was nice, it was freezing. There was a small heater on the wall which wasn't on and when we sat down the chairs were also cold. I asked one of the staff if she could switch the heating on to which I got a grunt and she turned it on. I should add that 20 minutes later, I checked the heater and it was lukewarm. We ended up eating our meal in our coats. I am obviously aware that there is a fuel crisis at the moment but when spending £150, we don't expect to eat in our coats. One of us went to the loo and came out shivering. We ordered a substantial amount of food as we hadn't eaten all day but unfortunately, most of it was underwhelming. The first problem that all the plates that the food arrived on were stone cold as were our plates and cutlery so given the fact that the room was freezing, the food didn't stay hot for long. The dim sums were stodgy, slimy and under seasoned. One of us had sweetcorn /chicken soup which to be fair , was delicious. The sesame prawns on toast were all toast and very little prawn. The sweet and sour chicken was OK but I am pretty sure that the sizzling filet steak in Cantonese sauce, wasn't fillet steak, more like braising steak. We had a prawn dish in ginger and spring onions and it just looked like a plate of jelly fish with prawns (we had never seen anything like it before) and instead of the flavour having a hint of ginger, there were huge lumps of it which were very unpleasant. The rice and noodle sides were OK After the meal we were offered some fruit which was on the house but we would have needed a serrated steak knife to get through the melon. The children wanted fortune cookies but they said they had run out. The only reason I left 2 stars is because the girl that served us was lovely. There was service charge added to the bill and we asked the waitress if she got any of it but she was non-committal...hmmm. We can't recommend this restaurant and definitely won't be going back.

Ordered a takeaway. Late arriving. Food was adequate no more, fairly standard U.K. takeaway at restaurant prices. Wouldn’t use again. Price/quality the reason for poor star rating. Everything, other than stale prawn crackers which to be fair were complimentary was ok but overpriced.

Complete shambles when we visited, despite there being plenty of staff in evidence. We had booked well in advance. Ordered our starters and mains. Ten minutes or so later another person came out and asked again what we wanted for our mains. Twenty minutes or more after ordering our starter we were advised that they "had run out of it". Didn't they know that sooner? It was too late for us to order another starter so we said to just bring the mains which arrived eventually and tbh were ok but just ok, nothing spectacular. We had ordered drinks which had arrived but had also asked for water at the same time and had to ask again before we got it some time later. Another table of 6 nearby were waiting absolutely ages and their meals all arrived at very different times and they too ran out of time and ended up cancelling parts of their meal which had not arrived and not finishing before they had to leave. Another couple spoke to us and said one had received their starter ages before and the other was still waiting. We could hear loud arguing and shouting coming from the kitchen. The staff were talking to each other about people telephoning to complain about take away orders. The heating wasn't on in late December and the place was cold. The bill arrived and they had already added a 10% service charge which frankly the service didn't warrant but not being mean we were prepared to pay. When paying unbelievably the waitress asked if we wanted to pay an additional tip to which we replied "are you joking? You've already added 10% to the bill without asking which is more than is deserved we aren't paying more than 10%"! Maybe they were just having an extremely bad day, who knows? We certainly won't be wasting our time and money again! If you like food of mediocre quality, loud shouting from the kitchen as a backdrop to your meal, slow, disorganised and chaotic service and have plenty of time to spare I'd recommend you visit. Fawlty Towers springs to mind! I laughed a lot because it was so bad, my companion and the other diners present didn't so much!

Cannot fault food and service. Went on a Saturday afternoon and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Very reasonable prices.

Last visited the Gonbay at lunch time in February 2022 - total £15.50p for two people, for 2 courses. That included a 10% service charge. On my last visit, had the 'special' lunchtime menu - which was £16.00 plus for a 2 course - ordered one meal from that menu and one other meal from the every day menu...........total was £31.40p., including a 10% service charge. The food was o.k., but a but much to double their prices.

Delighted with the excellent service by May with fabulous food served beautifully. We really enjoyed our meal and will be back for more ❤️

Went to Gonbay as we’d passed it loads of times and said we’d try it…”our survey said” err err….bad idea. Plus points good hot and sour soup and really crispy duck but a bit dry and very attentive. Downside near inedible food plied with salt, much more a take away than a restaurant, looks very messy fridges in the main restaurant and bowls piled up on the side where we were eating? Finally the cost £15 to £17+ each for Chicken in a mini wok (it was a sizzle skittle btw not a “mini wok”) and Satay Steak in a clay pot both with far far far too much salt. Shame really as Gonbay on The Downs in Altrincham is great. I’d try there if you can.

Either the chef is taking the p##s or he doesnt know what he's doing ! The prawn crackers tasted like they were cooked in burnt oil and the rest of it was so salty i cant believe it wasnt deliberate sabotage! Im not kidding it was completeley off the scale to a point that it was inedible, worst meal ive ever had !

We ordered Gonbay as we wrongly assumed these were one of the better Chinese takeaways, based on the prices and dishes… Now I understand why my mother told me to never judge a book by its cover! I don’t know if the chef was practising his Salt Bae’ impression or got teaspoon & tablespoon mixed up, but a good proportion of the dishes were salted to death. The wonton soup & soggy saggy seaweed were inedible. The unidentifiable dimsum were unappetising. One was in some gloopy brown sauce, the other had the texture and consistency of a sweaty Flubber. (Classic 90’s Robin Williams film) The crispy shredded beef was ok. The prawn crackers were nice though. Redeeming factor.

Worst takeaway ever. I ordered a takeaway over the phone and the person taking the order was not familiar with their own menu. Ask to charge extra 50p for each meal for takeaway for the box (which is quite ridiculous as it should be cheaper than eat-in). The food was not a decent portion and the quality was no good. Looked at the receipt and it shows that they charged me more than the price listed online. Beware of the over charging!

Not even worth 1 star. All food was cold and it was definitely not fresh. The s&p chicken and squid was chewy, chips were hard and the beef was stale. Didn’t even bother with the dumplings! Recommend to go elsewhere and save your money!!

I ordered takeaway as a friend recommended this restaurant. Food came one hour late than the delivery time. ( ordered on its website) Food doesn’t taste like freshly made. Roast duck in plum sauce - very oily and salty. Beef dumplings with ginger and spring onion - salty. Ribs - not very tender or fresh. I was very thirsty after the meal… I might try again to eat in one day as it’s a local restaurant but will not order delivery again.

I am a Hongkonger, the restaurant provide tasty Cantonese cuisines which are very similar to the taste from seafood restaurants in HK. Pan Fired Gold Pomfret with soy sauce, Hong Kong Style Pork are good, however Cantonese Roast Pork Belly is not crispy enough. The woman boss was a chef of famous Lei Garden Restaurant in HK.

Had a lovely family meal here tonight. The food and service were fantastic. So friendly and attentive. Thank you all.

Searched a year, finally found the taste of Hong Kong. The dishes size are huge and delicious, will come back for sure after your 1st visit... I'm not just talking about taste, I'm talking about satisfaction guys, including taste, service, and environment. Phew,

Went for a meal here last week on looking on the online menu thought it would be a nice dining experience due to the price of the dishes how wrong could I be the squid was like rubber and had to be sent back king prawn dish that crispy it cut my gum BBQ spare ribs all bone special fried rice prawns like rubber chicken frozen pieces out of a bag curry the colour of baby poo and watery asked the waiter about the quality of the food he replied in saying it's all frozen ingredients we use my advice is to stay well clear this place does not say much for Chinese cooking if u are lucky enough not to break a tooth it will break ur bank balance had to rate it 1 star to write a review truth is a 0 is a bonus for this establishment.

I can only assume that some of the negative reviews were from competitors. So sad and unfair. As visitors to the area we found the food to be excellent and the service couldn't be faulted either. We chatted to another diner who eats here frequently which she would not do if the food was not good. We will definitely eat here again when in the area.

We went last night for my wifes birthday.The food was excellent as always but the service was exceptional.They surprised Heather with a delicous ice cream birthday cake and a gift ! A delightful place with great food and atmosphere.

A very typical Chinese but they have been advertising to the new Hong Kong community extensively so I thought I would give them a try. Taste is average not great not bad. Prices are higher than city centre and even higher than the Yang sing. I don't see any value in going here unless you live local and don't want to travel. I noticed some reviews saying they support the Hong Kong protests so I'm guessing that's the market they are tapping, where ppl are willing to pay any price for average food because they share a political agenda. I prefer restaurants that perhaps are less political and more about offering good food at good prices.

Food was cold and the flavours were very poor. Many of the dishes had a rubbery texture and appeared to be made from low quality ingredients. Really not a good experience.

Really great food, portion size was amazing (I took a couple of ribs home for later) All the staff were really nice and friendly.

Just rang to confirm we were delivered correct dish after ordering Fillet Satay. Not a trace of any nuts or satay flavour.Order was otherwise of fairly good quality, fast delivery and would have been otherwise enjoyable, if not more recommendable. Nothing offered other than confirmation from kitchen that a dark thin gravy chilli onion with green peppers and red chilli was indeed how they send out a satay.

Feel half bad writing this because the waitress was very sweet . However the food was simply dreadful and confirmed all the terrible reviews this place gets. No point mentioning what we ordered as judging by other reviews and this review I would say avoid .

My husband, daughters and I had a lovely lunch here today. We especially loved the minced chicken lettuce wrap, fish sui mai and the special chow mein which was yummy. I also asked for a portion of pickled vegetables which I think, normally comes with the platters. The pickled vegetables ended up being my favourite part of the meal! So delicious.We also ordered spring rolls, pork sui mai, beef dumplings, crispy squid, chicken with cashew nuts, sweet and sour king prawns and steamed rice. The food was really nice, the staff were lovely and the service great. We wish we could afford to come every week!!Next time, I want to try the mini ribs in garlic and black bean (one of my favourite ever dim sum), the paper wrap prawn and sea bass with ginger and spring onion.It is a comprehensive menu which my family and I would like to work our way through

We had the basic set meal which had a menu price of £24pp.On sitting down we were presented with complimentary prawn crackers and dip.The chicken and sweetcorn soup was very good quality and was served in a large soup bowl (not the small ones many Chinese restaurants use) and cam with more prawn crackers.Next came a large platter of the usual starters - spare ribs, prawn toast, spring rolls, samosa and seaweed. The portions were so big we only managed about half and the rest was saved as a take away! All was good except the prawn toast which was very chewy so we left that.The main courses chosen all came with a premium quality rice. Sweet & Sour chicken was good quality and came with a good sauce. The salt and pepper king prawns was a new dish for us and whilst ok it lacked something to make it a dish I would have again, albeit prawns were good and it was well presented.A small fruit platter followed which consisted of melon, orange and grapes.The waiter apologised for a slow service although with so much food it was welcome to have a break between courses as some Chinese restaurants do sometimes give the impression that they want you in and out as quickly as possible!As regards the beer situation we were not given a drinks menu (nor can I find one on the website). I had asked for draught beer but the waiter said it was not very good that night (???) so I had bottled instead. The bottles work out at around £8 a pint for Tiger (I saw a reference to £3.80 for draught beer in the window on departing). Tip here is to ask for a a drinks list to check prices.Overall the food and drink seem at the top end for a Chinese restaurant although they do have some deals on for early diners etc.They also have a large vegetarian menu for those who prefer to avoid meat etc.

Crispy duck starter was a good portion and tasty. Mains we're average, edible but not particularly special for the price. Not enough staff on the night we visited so slow to order, get served and then getting the bill. Fire panel constantly going off all through the meal so not particularly relaxing. Wouldn't go again. 3 stars may be generous.

I am so disappointed with my food I received from here, I spent £40 on a feast but what came was disgusting, the dumplings all tastes of dirty water, i got 3 different types and couldn't eat any of them due to the taste, im praying that I don't get poorly... i ordered a sauce of chilli soya and spring onion for just under £ 4.00 and it was a tiny tube that normally should of cost about £ 1.00. The ribs were all bone also.I have never felt the need to leave such a negative review but this was beyond the worst I have ever had and felt truly disappointed. Save your money and ordered elsewhere!!!!

absolutely SHOCKING service and even WORSE food. I come to collect my food as the woman on the phone (who by the way had a TERRIBLE attitude) told me it would be 40 mins. When I got the food and come home to the food being FREEZING and the chips and chicken looked like they had been sat there for the last week. I took the food back as I was very unhappy about paying £40 for a meal for it Not to be even edible. The women refused a refund, and provided us with new food which she had defiantly just warmed the food up which I took back. I then got home with my SECOND meal which she give me to find 2 hairs in my food!!! ALSO social distancing was NOT taking place in this restaurant/ takeaway as there was 5 people waiting in the small waiting area Defiantly not 2 metres apart. This service is absolutely Diabolical and I do not recommend anyone to be going here.!!!!!!!!!

We got a delivery this evening. A good selection of food. It was without a doubt the worst Chinese take away I’ve ever had. Chicken Curry sauce was really thin. It was packed out with chips - weirdly.Not sure it was possible to ge the fried rice so wrong. But they did. Salt & pepper chips were horrendous.Actually shocked that the food got sent out the way it was.

Called in with friends on Sunday for the buffet got to say really fresh and hot and had taste the food is served to you not one of these where you help yourself and kept under lights for hours everything is really good really helpful staff but go if your hungry not for the faint hearted iv not had a takeaway from hear but if the restaurant is anything to go by then it should be good

As a lover of Chinese cuisine I have found it difficult to find a good one recently. Recommended by a friend the Gonbay was visited this evening. I was pleasantly surprised by the menu's including a dedicated vegetarian selection. Food and service was excellent. In short search over and will call again soon.

Very good vegetarian options, delicious food. Service is a bit haphazard but nothing drastic! Definitely worth a visit.

The parking ribs are spectacular! Whole dinner v good, hot & plentiful. Was concerned when the delivery guy came in, walked behind bar and poured himself a neat double whisky from the optic - & sat st table to consume it. What??!!!! We were so shocked!

Took my family here for my sons birthday, the crispy duck was lovely and the mains crispy chilli beef, chicken chow mien and chicken fried rice were excellent, the restaurant was clean and the staff very friendly. Definitely will be going again

Upon ordering online, our 1st impression was the price was steep, however we would still give it a go in the hope the price would be justified. Unfortunately, I found that the quality of the food not only didn’t justify the expensive price but I would go as far as to say I would hesitate to pay even half of the price we paid for this meal. A good point came from the fact the duck had a good flavour, however this is a small consolation as the rest of the meal was sub par at best.It is safe to say that I would not be ordering from here again and would urge others to look elsewhere.

We ordered a takeaway from Gonbay in Sale and we couldn’t have been anymore disappointed. We ordered the dim sum platter which had literally been thrown into the takeaway box and was dripping with oil. The pastry was thick and the whole thing tasted disgusting. For mains, we asked for tofu and mixed vegetables and they charged us an extra £2 for 2 pieces of tofu. We also asked for cashew nuts in our other dish and they charged us £4 extra for this! The mains were watery and tasteless. This place is massively over priced and the food tastes horrible! We won’t be ordering from here again!

We love this place. We only found it a couple of months ago and we have been 5 times so far. Food and service are excellent, a very good night out.

We ordered takeaway dinner for 3. £38 and 10 minutes later the food was already waiting for us. Food was grey. Grey meat, watery sauce, bland, flavourless. It was as pungent and watery as my toilet delivery later. Would not recommend unless you want a garunteed day off work. Forget spring rolls and order toilet roll!

Pre-booked a table for 7 persons. There were also 2 other small parties in that evening - perhaps 30 max in all. The service was terrible. A Monday evening, that was not a busy night for them.

Service was great, but food was terrible, burnt ribs to start, in fact all food was rubbish!!!! Never again!!!!

Probably one of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to. Delicious, great service and fantastic location!
