We had a party of 40, the service and the food were amazing can highly recommend. Everybody commented on how nice the food was and it was hot. Well done and thank you.

not impressed with the presentation firstly, then when i got it home (which was 2 minutes down the road) the chips were like leftovers and the fish was below average. Won't be visiting again.

Service not good at all. 2 ladies were serving they both looked as if they didn’t want to be there. Cod was all batter barely any fish. Awful will not be going back

Today we ordered two sausages, a cod, two large chips and a fishcake. Upon arriving home we have found one of the sausages missing and one of the fishcakes which is approaching black on one side. We've been disappointed with the fish shop on a couple of occasions in the last few months and it's happened again. I could understand if the shop was packed but there was only one person in front when queuing.

Fairly frequent visitor to this place in the past but not for a couple of months. Prices have gone up astronomically. Accept cost of everything has gone up a lot recently but by the time you add everything up, you are approaching restaurant prices now. Portion sizes are getting smaller so you also have 'srinkflation in there as well. There used to be one price for each fish type , now there are two 'standard' and 'large'. Large used to be the norm but is now almost £10 for a piece of cod. Add in chips and say mushy peas and you are looking at ~ £13.50 - so like I said, restaurant prices. And the kicker? 30p for a flimsy paper carrier bag to take it in. I've checked and there is no obligation to charge as these are not single use plastic and in any case the usual charge is 10p. My local Indian Takaeaway (Koh-I-Noor Highly recommended) delivers anything more than a couple of items for free in a box the sort you would buy a wedding cake. Need to find a new Chippy!

The food was shockingly awful! Waited 10 mins for a haddock which gave me the runs. The food was vile and made me ill, not sure what they are doing in the back but they are not following guidelines to make sure there health and safety precautions were met ew !They took so long the wife got annoyed and started love island without me. These used to be so nice what has happened? The chips portions are so tiny the chips themselves are also tiny, no nice british sized chips, didnt taste gd either. We’ve been regulars at the Golden Fry since moving to the area a few years ago - fish freshly cooked, good portions and very friendly service.

We ordered a fish supper for a family of five, haddock, chips, mushy peas with one side order of chicken nuggets. The food was freshly cooked while we waited, it was all fantastic quality and tasted really delicious. We have used this chip shop for over 20 years and it has been consistently good, we recommend highly.

This is a no frills , take away fish and chip shop with a basic menu of fish, fish cakes, pies, chicken pieces and sausages. The food is generally very good. The battered sausage and chips meal is substantial and excellent value.

We have been a frequent customer of the Golden Fry for many years. Usually the portion sizes are generous (two people could share a cod portion if not too hungry), but last night's visit was very disappointing. Ordered the usual Cod and Chips for myself and different things for other family members. What was in the bag when I got home looked more like a sardine than a piece of cod. I wasn't feeling well so not very hungry but needed something else afterwards. Not really on at £5 for just the fish. Might have to try some of the other local chippies as recommended on NextDoor at this rate.

Can't beat fish n' chips when you are in a rush and The Golden Fry is excellent. Reasonable prices, very big portions and friendly service. Highly recommended

Typical English fish, chips and mushy peas supper which offers great service and great fish and chips! Would agree with another reviewer that the quality of fish has recently gone up recently. The chips weren’t greasy either...so all in all ... a great British Chippy!

Was working up the Road and found this tucked away, from the outside it does notgrab you as being a good eat, but step inside and The staff are happy polite and chatty.Ordered fish and chips with a cold drink, Reasonably priced and of Good size, enjoyed the meal, and would recommend to all, will be visiting here again.

Don't know if this place has changed hands recently or whether they've just changed supplier, but the quality of the fish from here seems to have gone through the roof ! Having had a poor experience (repeatedly) in the past (under-cooked / over-cooked fish and soggy tepid chips), we had taken to only buying from here if I REALLY couldn't be bothered to go the extra few miles to Finchampstead, but the last TWO occasions I have to say, the quality has been OUTSTANDING.Consequently I shall NOT now be bothering with anywhere else.

Went here for a fish supper for the family on Friday night. Friendly service and there was no queue so we didn’t have to wait long. The fish was delicious and a good size, plenty of chips as well.

I've lived in Crowthorne for 5 years now and have been to this chippy on a number of occasions. During that time I've noticed an massive inconsistency with the quality of food . When the owner is on duty behind the fryer I would honestly say this is probably one of the best local Chip shops I've ever been to...Outstanding! However the complete opposite is the case when he is not on duty or away on holiday. Everything in there is greasy and tasteless ...disgusting in fact. I'm assuming it's his son who takes control when he's not around as they look alike but the difference between the two is astonishing. As a business owner myself I felt compelled to write this review as it's actually quite infuriating watching the owners son ruin his Dads business for him . It's such a shame and I guarantee anyone buying Fish and Chips from this place for the first time while the son is on duty will not be coming back . So ...just to warn anyone reading this..the owner is the older (obviously) taller man of the two. If you pop into the Golden Fry anytime soon and see a short fat younger guy behind the fryer you're better off with a microwave meal in the local Co-Op !

I really want to support a Crowthorne business but just had the worst cod & chips from here. Batter on fish much too soggy so when I tried to get it out of the bag the whole thing just fell to pieces all over the table and floor, chips full of oil and really a big disappointment.The oil in the fryer needs to be much hotter and more time spent cooking correctly rather than just putting food out because the shop is busy.

A pretty standard chippy, nothing over the top just your standard fayre as you might expect. I've always found the portions to be good and tasty. If you're in the area give it a go.

Quick and great tasting fast food at sensible prices.: efficient service, good range on sale. As a Northerner, I would like the choice to have savoury gravy on my chips though . . . .

I've reviewed the Golden Fry before, but have to say that recent visits have been poor. Prices have increased on everything by about 15% recently (which I guess happens - Brexit and all that) but the quality of the food and service has deteriorated. Fish is frequently soggy rather than crisp and chip portions are getting smaller (despite increased prcies). Final straw was last Friday - everyone in the queue was asked the same question: "Do you want a carrier bag" . No love, I want to try and balance half a dozen bags of assorted fish, chips, pies etc on my head on the way back to the car. So I say yes, and got about 20yards up the road before BOTH handles of the paper carrier broke, spilling the contents all over the pavement. OK, so each item was individually wrapped in paper, but it was cold and wet out, so they got dumped in icy puddles. Not quite what you want. Either make the handles stronger or supply plastic (this is food supply and a small business so shouldn't require a cost for plastic bag tax - probably be cheaper anyway). Sadly this is the nearest F&C to us but I might have to bite the bullet and go to the ones recomended on here in Sandhurst.

Moved from crowthorne to finchampstead 4 years ago and still drive all the way back to get our fish and chips. Well worth the drive. Best chippy around

Stopped of here on the way home..wish I had gone to the one in Sandhurst under the chirstmas bridge..look at the picture..what is this...what has happened to a proper portion of good old English chips this would not fill a baby let alone a grown man..come on now sort your self out get rid of stupid bags that you can't even get all the chips covered in salt..not happy next time I past there I shall raise this with owners

Fish sub standard and chips well we had some whole ones but loads of bits. Not the first time this has happen. They would have a better chip if used a bigger size chip cutter.Went for convenience, but won't be again. Will travel to my favourite chippy in bagshot a30

This is not our closest fish and chip shop but we always drive there as the Golden Fry is consistently the best in the area.We have also used them to supply food for more than 60 people when running quiz nights and they have been very good quality and arrived hot which is an achievement for such a large order

A lovely traditional fish and chip take-away. Quite small, so you may queue outside on a busy evening. However, well worth the wait.

Been several times & the cod & chips have always been consistently good with crispy batter on the fish & decent chips. The mushy peas leave room for improvement as only average but overall best fish & chips in the area with good sized portions.

Have been using the Golden Fry for a number of years. And have never had any complaints. The food is usually always cooked fresh to order and the staff are very friendly.

We get fish and chips here often and have never been let down by the quality. The batter is crisp and chips are proper chip shop chips. Pricing is reasonable too .

Popped in here for the 2nd time last Thursday and wasn't impressed.. Again! The staff don't look like they want to be there, let a loan serve you. The guy frying the fish looked miserable and the fish tasted of nothing.. The chips were dry and tasted like they had been in the warmer for a couple of hours. I won't be going back. I think these guys need another chippy to open in Crowthorne to wake um up a bit. (respectfully)

I don't normally review Fish & Chip shops but having seen some of the other reviews of the Golden Fry in Crowthorne, I felt the need to redress the balance at some of the criticism. I have no idea what the reviewer who commented that he received the smallest portion of fish he'd ever seen was expecting,but my experience over many years is that the fish portions are very generous, frequently dropping over the edges of a large plate. Golden Fry only do one size of fish (unlike others who claim to give you 2 or three size options which turn out to be indistinguishable despite significant difference in price) and their price is very good. Similarly the 'regular' chips is enough for two adults to adequately share with fish and my son reckons that the large portion of chips is an entire meal on its own!. My only criticism would be of the pies which are quite small (but much cheaper than the fish). I recently had to use 'Fish&Chicken' in the Harmans Water shops late on a Sunday because Golden Fry had already closed and this was much more expensive and poorer quality. I will definitely stick to Golden Fry.

This place is a real lucky dip - when it's quiet & your order's cooked fresh then chances are the chips have been in the warmer for hours & are dreadful. If they're busy then your fish'll have been cooked in advance & be greasy & soggy, but the chips'll be crispy & fresh. In probably 20 visits - I've only had good fish AND good chips ONCE! But do I keep going back - yes, but only 'cos it's the only chippy in the town. I really hope the owners read this - 'cos Crowthorne deserves better.

Well located and always popular, you can park in Lidl opposite and nip in. The service is quick and the shop clean. The batter is always crisp, however i wish they would pack the fish onto grease proof paper so it doesn't stick to the paper bag. The chips are a good size and are well cut although the portion size could be bigger for the price they charge.
