Golden Fry in Milton Keynes

Absolutely disappointing to say the least I had high expectations as the place looks amazing and the staff was friendly. However, when I received my food, the fish was not great the batter was tasteless and soggy. The only good thing I can say is the potatoes were fresh and the chips were lovely. We asked for salt and vinegar and didn’t get any, which is a huge vibe killer. 😢 I will be returning to review again and hopefully it will be better but as of now I can’t recommend it to anyone. When it comes to fish and chips, the little things make a big difference.

Regular High Street fish and chip shop with all the usual extras. Good sized portions at a reasonable price. Highly recommend.

This is some good advice for the new owners,You seriously need to contact the old owners and find out exactly how they used to cook the food, and replicate exactly. This chippy had for years the best reputation for good food, now it has a bad reputation. The food and service is bad. I used to travel miles to buy from here not anymore.

We haven't tried this chippy for ages but was not disappointed. The food and service was 1st class. Thanks we will be back

Chips hard and cold even though they were supposed to be fresh cooked. Prices ridiculous - chips all one price no small portions. Cash preferred not keen on card payments as "it was supporting banks" really disappointed also very little food choices. No chicken or cods roe

Sorry but the food was awful, dripping with grease(oil) undercook batter on the sausage and the fish Batter was soggy and limp NO CRISP whatsoever. Won’t be giving it a visit again

What a shame, previous owners gone, and with them the pride of delivering a great British classic. Batter was greasy and well under cooked, as where the chips. I noticed that the plaice, haddock and cod were all identically priced too🤔. Shame really, good luck to the new owners.

I recently had a disappointing experience at The Golden Fry. Despite craving just a bag of chips, I was informed they only serve customers paying cash unless the purchase exceeds £5. Fine, I thought, and placed an order totaling £5.60, paid with my card. Then, realizing I forgot to order a drink, I tried to add one, only to be told there's a minimum £5 spend. Inconsistent policies and inconvenience made this visit less than golden.

I thought i would give this chippy another chance as previously i tried the food after the old owners left and the food wasnt great,infact it was terrible.Having tried the food again i have to say it was all absolutely disgusting..The chips are pale and undercooked,the fish was not edible. Had to throw all the food in the bin.I don't no how these people think they can serve food looking like it does. I don't now how this establishment has over 4 stars? Its such as a shame as the old owners knew how to cook food and it was always delicious and had a good reputation. I can definitely say I will never eat at this place again!!!

I revisited the Golden Fry Fish and Chip Shop in Newport Pagnell, hoping for an improved experience, but sadly, it was another disappointing visit. The chips were undercooked, just like my previous visit, and the quality of the food left much to be desired. What's even more frustrating is the continuously rising prices, with £2.90 for chips and £2.10 for a jumbo sausage feeling quite excessive. Additionally, the imposition of a £5 minimum card fee and the excessive push for cash payments through signage raised concerns. It seems like an attempt to avoid taxes, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth. In summary, I had to give it a 2-star rating once again due to the poor food quality, high prices, and the unappealing payment policies. I hope they can address these issues and improve the overall dining experience. It would be wise for the establishment to consider expanding their payment options to accommodate a wider range of customers. Overall, my visit to Goldenfry left me dissatisfied. The consistent issue of undercooked chips, lackluster batter, increasing prices, and limited payment options for smaller amounts were all significant drawbacks. While I appreciate their efforts, these issues hindered my enjoyment of the meal. I hope the management takes these concerns into consideration and works towards improving the overall quality and customer experience. Based on other reviews this place is having friends boost the scores clearly and should be not allowed as it is no where near 4-5 star.

Just had my best fish & chips in years. It's not often I go into town, but I did tonight, and I remembered how good they were from before, so I called in again. If possible, it was better. The fish was huge, but not heavy to eat, the chips were done just perfect. It's going to be a weekly trip in to town from now on. 5 *****

I visited Golden Fry last week and I won't be going back again. The food was absolutely terrible. I ordered fish, chips and mushy peas for my wife, and I had 2 battered sausages & a curry sauce. The chips were anaemic, the mushy peas tasted like water and the battered sausages were lukewarm with soft batter. As for the fish, it was off and smelt terrible. My wife couldn't even bear try it, so we threw it away. A complete waste of £20 and hugely disappointing.

We was out in town ,we did feel a bit hungry so we ordered what we wanted ,no from £20 ,4 chips. 2 battered sausages and 2 plain sausage s ,we wish we hadn’t bothered with them ,the chips was hard and tasted different plus the battered sausages was horrible ,even the other sausages wasn’t nice ,sorry to say it gone down hill a lot since ,it’s under new management ,we won’t be returning

Really gone down hill which is such a shame... cold hard, old tasting chips. Prices have risen ( understandable) but portions have got smaller too

This place used to be good. Just had the most lukewarm crunchy bag of reheated chips in years. Rude service also. Do not recommend.

1st time since has changed ownership. Freshly cooked Haddock & Cod - Fish a decent portion size. But batter was an oily soggy sticky mess which even the greaseproof paper can't handle. Either your oil temperature needs to be higher or you need to change your batter recipe. Chips need longer cooking or oil temperature needs to be higher as above. Really disappointed 😞

The worst batter. Complained about how soggy it was and they said that’s how it supposed to be. Never have I had such soggy undercooked batter. I was genuinely shocked that they were ok with this batter. Dinner ruined. Never again. Customer service is awful.

Popped in while passing & was pleasantly surprised, although they could do with listening more as the missed Mrs.B's Fish off the order, meaning we then had a bit longer to wait, good job the Fish, Chips & Savaloys were Yummy, & not to bad value.

Plentiful chips and large fish make this a great fish and chip shop. Unfortunately due to the cost of living rises be prepared to pay mare than a year ago.

Best traditional Fish and Chip shop in Newport Pagnell and Milton Keynes in my opinion, hands down beats an apparently "award winning" place in Broughton, where hardly anything on the menu is available Yes it's changed hands, but the food is still absolutely spot on, new owner has kept the tradition going

Batter to thick absolutely disgusting couldnt get the fish as it was sticking to it,chips were not chips they were left over bits of potatoes fried

Decent size potion of chips but beware if you want a pie and there's none ready as they stick it in the microwave which makes the pastry all soft.

Turned up at 20.04 in the evening and he had closed at 20.00 and was still behind the counter, Wtf it’s advertised as 21.00. It seems changing your opening times at the drop of a hat is a good way to keep customers happy. NOT! To be honest I’m not shocked as he seems to open and close whenever he likes. He’s not the happiest of shop owners pretty miserable most times you go in. Also his chips are sometimes hard and undercooked and the sloppy batter on the fish is something to avoid.

Bought haddock and chips from here tonight. Massive piece of fish with lovely light crisp batter. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal and would definitely recommend

Had fish & chips from here tonight, I have to say it was by far the worst fish & chips I had ever eaten. The fish seemed like it had been reheated it was dry inside and the batter was just full of grease. Its was inedible so we threw it away what a waste when it isn't cheap.

Great fish and chip shop and has been in the community for many years, price is very reasonable and the staff are friendly and helpful. They also sell skinless cod which is very nice. Cannot rate it highly enough.

I like this chip shop, but never know what quality of chips I'm going to get. Visited two weeks ago and the chips were excellent, Just like chips should be. Not too much to ask when you pay £1.80 a portion. Visited again today, and the chips were nowhere near as good as two weeks ago. They were like frozen chips from the supermarket that had just been heated up. Most chip shops are doing that now. I thought Golden Fry was different, but it seems not.

Used this chippy as my usual one was closed, Skin is left on the fish and the batter was thick soft and greasy Won't be returning.

Its our go to place for a Chinese. Tim is always welcoming, as are his family. Eat in or take-away, you will not be disappointed.

I visited this chippy earlier this evening with my girlfriend. We ordered a small portion of chips and two battered sausages. The staff member proceeded to place the items in a tray when we noticed there was a hair lying over our food. We raised the issue to the staff member, he then reluctantly proceeded to use the tongs he had just served our food with and picked up the hair without apology or offering a new portion and seemed content to serve this to us. We asked for another portion and the response was unprofessional with the owner not directly apologising simply asking the employee what the problem was in which his response was “I don’t know” clearly showing he couldn't care less! The customer service experienced was atrocious and the worst part was the employee placed the containment food which we refused to take back into service to be received by other customers. How they have passed a food hygiene rating is beyond me, with none of the employees wearing hair nets! We will not be returning and we are severely disappointed in our local chippy.

Best chips around so many people I know always say and I have to agree. Cheerful staff and clean premises. They serve all the traditional things you would expect. If you are not satisfied with small packets of sauce or vinegar then you can even buy a bottle of it instead. Great range of drinks are on offer too.

Foods good, although sometimes it's hit n miss and not very happy staff, especially the owner. Perhaps he doesn't want your money anymore.

Excellent fish and chips, generous portions, fresh food, friendly staff, cheap prices. Expect a 10-15 minute wait on Friday evenings as it is very popular. But it's well worth the wait - and driving to Newport from Milton Keynes - as it is so much better than other local options.

We recently moved to the area and had dinner here earlier this week. The food was absolutely delicious, staff very friendly and the place is spotless with a food hygiene rating of 5*. All in all a great experience and we will definitely be ordering food from here again.

I’ve been visiting this Fish n Chip shop now for a while and I really have to congratulate them on how tasty their Fish n Chips are. The batter on the fish is not too heavy, the chips are just fine and certainly not greasy. The portion size is just right. I was full after eating my meal and that is what is needed. The staff are pleasant and efficient. Other Fish n Chip shops should take a leaf from your book as you clearly set the standard locally. Well done!

Mini fish and standard chips more than adequate for two OAPs. Eaten alfresco on a picnic table beside the river in Castle Meadows, all washed down with a nice glass of Rose wine. Very enjoyable ❤️

Have visited the Golden Fry a few times now and have always had lovely food. The chips are great, not over or under cooked. The curry sauce is lovely. Their chicken is not dry which is really nice! It's my go to chipper now.
