Golden City Cantonese Carry Out in South Ayrshire

I didn’t visit the restaurant, but ordered a takeaway; ann absolutely amazing chicken, green pepper and black bean sauce with boiled rice. The Chicken was plentiful and the nicest I’ve ever tasted from a Chinese restaurant. Veggies were crisp and crunchy and exactly the way they should have been as was the black bean sauce. Thank you, Golden City - I didn’t know what to expect with it being my first take-away from you, but I more than impressed and was certainly not disappointed

We ordered and paid for a takeaway delivery from this chinese, online via their website it said it would take 55 minutes for delivery, we were staying at Ayr Cragie Gardens caravan site in Ayr. we said we would meet them at the gate. 15 minutes late we rang the chinese they said, oh we didnt know you had ordered as our website is down, what did you order and we will get it straight out to you. 20 minutes after the 2nd delivery time standing out in the rain, we got a telephone call from the driver saying he was at the gate... of Craig Tara Caravan site. so another 15 minutes wait and it arrived. my husband said his special curry was ok, I did not enjoy mine at all tasted like processed chicken. If you are staying on the caravan and motorhome site in Ayr avoid this takeaway.

On holiday in Ayr and probably the best takeaway I have ever had. The chicken curry tasted like real chicken, Sweet n Sour chicken was fresh. The spicy chips were gorgeous. The rice was soft and fluffy.

Usually go local for Chinese takeaway but working in ayr thought I would try. God was amazing, sweet and sour sauce is out of this world. Would definately recommend and would use again

AMAZING food was delicious and the portion sizes are good and couldn't belive how cheap it was we are visiting from salford and I would have to pay well over £60 for this , it only cost £38.30

We have been twice to this Chinese when we have visited Ayr, the food is absolutely delicious and portions are huge, prices are fab as well, will defo be back.

Easily up there with the best we have had! We got chicken fried rice, plain chow mein, chicken balls, gravy and salt and chilli chips. The chicken fried rice was great, the chicken being so tender and full of flavour! The chow mein was great, the chicken balls on their own were pretty standard to be honest, but just how we like them, not too big, and the batter was nice and crispy. But dip them into the gravy and OMG I couldn't stop eating them! And finally, the salt and chilli chips... The best I have had by far. We are fed up with being served salty chips with some peppers mixed in, but these were coated in spicy flavour that I just can't do justice here by explaining it! Pretty standard price too, about £30 for our order (all the above but 2 chicken fried rice). Easily would pay £10 more though, and I am tight with my money too! We were staying outside of Ayr and so had to drive, parking was a concern as it is in the high street area, but to our surprise we could park right outside the door with no problem at all. Overall, fantastic all round, can't wait to stay down this way again just so we have an excuse to order from here again!

2nd time getting carry out from here. I'm from Glasgow got a caravan in ayr tried them all but how did I miss the golden city. Best Chinese curry I've had in decades, old style Chinese curry I've been looking for. Superb Superb. Ps chicken mushroom soup was lovely as well

We were staying nearby and this chinese menu had so much choice and reviews seemed good, that's why we picked it. We ordered the honey garlic chicken which was very sweet and the portion sizes were great. The prices are a little more expensive than others but we enjoyed our meals.

WOW! We are staying at Craig Tara and came across this Chinese on google my partner went to collect it as they don’t deliver to the park however it was well worth it ! The prices are amazing considering the portion sizes are massive! Everything we had was amazing and had flavour the chicken fried rice was nothing to what we’ve had before but by far the best we’ve ever tasted the noodles were perfect just how you want them to taste! We really don’t have a bad thing to say about it. We wish every Chinese tastes like this one as was the best one we’ve ever had! 😃😃

I feel that we are either very unlucky or people’s estimation of good food is different from mine. Probably one of the poorest Chinese takeaways I’ve ever had. Ordered crispy beef and fried rice and chips. Now the chips and rice were ok but not hard to get wrong. The beef dish was terrible. Massively over salted and described as sweet and spicy was certainly neither. The most blandest dish I’ve eaten in a long time. Very disappointing indeed. Looks like we need to find another place that does decent crispy beef.

Got 4 main courses for 4 adults portions amazing could not finish any of the 4 of us great value here on holiday will definitely be back when here again

Best Chinese takeaway I've had in a while. A hidden gem. The shop was extremely busy which is testament to how good it is. You did have to wait a little while on your food coming but definitely worth the wait. Will definitely be back.

Used this whilst holidaying in the area. Must admit one of most efficient and tasty oriental foods I have had in a while. Good food, reasonable prices. Would recommend to anyone

It had been 3 years since we had a Cantonese/Chinese carry out and asked a friend where he would recommend. He and his family are regulars getting carry outs from the Golden City. I must have got it on a bad night. After a very active day with lots of activity and not much to eat we were starving and I ordered spring rolls, described on the menu as mini spring rolls, beef and mixed peppers with black bean sauce, fried rice, chicken balls, chips and sweet and sour sauce. Covid protocols were good, only one person was allowed in at a time, given a buzzer and had to wait outside. The place was like somewhere out of the 1980’s kind of lost in time Chinese carry out. Very small, traditional look to it. It is carry out only. Staff (looked like the owners) were very nice to speak with and very friendly. I took to them instantly which makes this review hard to write. The order was made very quickly and we arrived home and unwrapped it only a few minutes later while it was still fresh. First thing out the carrier bag was the bag of chips. When I lifted it the bag was so saturated with fat it disintegrated spilling chips all over the worktop. When picking them up to bin them I noticed they were soggy and very greasy and a dark colour suggesting the oil was badly needing changed. I popped them on a tray in a hot oven to crisp them up and try to dry them out. Next was one of my favourites, the spring roll. Last I had one was from another restaurant in Ayr, the pastry was filo like, thin, crispy and light in colour. Again the bag was soaked in oil, on opening it I have never seen something more disgusting looking. These were not mini spring rolls but two large ones. Rather than smooth light pastry this was dark and greasy, looked to be reheated or re-fried, best described as looking like a fat sausage or black pudding in batter from a poor chip shop. Like the chips it smelled of stale oil which was leaching out of it. I broke one open and it was densely packed with grey looking bean sprouts and nothing else. They went straight in the bin and to be honest I nearly put everything in the bin at that point and sought an alternative dinner. I then opened the foil trays with the beef, green pepper and black bean sauce and the fried rice. Finally something edible- they looked and smelled fantastic. Trying the beef it was tender, thin and the sauce was a lovely flavour, veg was fresh and still slightly crunchy. The rice was dry and fluffy, wasily separated with a fork. I expected the chicken balls to be awful like the rest of the deep fried stuff however they were spherical and fairly flat, like chicken nuggets, not ball like, a Pat with some kitchen roll to remove oil, they were actually quite nice. Sweet and sour sauce was a dark red colour and a very strong and over pouring flavour. I wasn’t keen on it to be honest. The beef dish and rice were one of the best we’d had, I’d give it 4 stars. flat chicken balls however 3 stars, the whole meal was let down by the soggy fat soaked chips and the inedible and worryingly disgusting spring rolls (zero stars) and weird tasting sweet and sour sauce. (1 star) Would I go back? If I’d only had the beef and rice, absolutely, however I can’t get the spring rolls out my head and as I am writing this at 3am having woken up thirsty from the salt content (or maybe MSG) and indigestion I’m less inclined. (I’d have added a photo of the spring rolls however there is no option to do so maybe as I am submitting this review on the website not the app?}

Was looking for a new takeaway as we felt our usual was going downhill, and so far wasn't too disappointed, it's a bit expensive compared to some places, but the meals were very tasty, the portions are not as big as where we used to go, but they appeared to use less MSG & that's a bonus.

This was our first time trying this place and the food was lovely. We ordered chicken fried rice, chicken balls and chips and gravy.

This is a tricky one for me, as the food is always excellent with decent sized portions The guy serving however is desperately unfriendly & talks ONLY to a very select few, worse still is that I'm an incredibly friendly guy & can usually talk to/with anyone BUT not this guy (who is way more than happy to grab at my cash from the other side of the counter). Cheer up man, your shop is always busy, you must be raking it in.

Ordered a chicken curry & fryed rice @ roughly 7pm for Sat night t.v. And when it arrived @20:30, it was that cold I had to defrost it before I attempted to eat it. Absolutel joke
