Gold River in Scarborough

I went here due to the other Chinese being closed. I offer my normal, expected a high quality food for the price point. My rice stuck together, was greasy, and overall had a horrible texture. My salt and pepper chicken starter has small peicie of dry flavourless chicken, the oil in the bottom had the most flavor. In total I had 8 small chunks of chicken the rest of the container was filled with vegetables. Not to mention the service yes it was speedy, though only two things ordered. The woman at the cou terminal was not welcoming and had a quite sharp tone. I wouldn't recommend.

Fantastic food!!! Really fresh and well cooked. Good attention to detail. Very friendly host. This restaurant is a hidden gem.

Awful take away! Egg fried rice was inedible, curry was congealed and stuck together! The chow was the worst I’ve ever had. The only thing we enjoyed was the seaweed.

Visited on 27/8/2023…everywhere else in Filey booked and full,so surprised to walk in to find so many empty tables (tells its own story).Stood for 5 minutes with my son (11 year old) to be rudely told by waitress “sit there” pointing to a table with no cutlery and not made up….It set the tone for the entire meal really,as she had the worse attitude I have ever known for a waitress.Drinks slammed down on the table,rude,we actually laughed as it was that bad customer service.The food was ok at best.The waitress was consistent with others who popped in to eat,both rude and aggressive with around a dozen other people walking out of the place….Would not recommend to eat here

I was disappointed with this take away, the reviews led me to believe it was going to be great, if you could score in half points I would score it a 2.5. The decor is stale and past it which made me a little uneasy when I collected the food. In all honesty the food matched the decor, we didn’t eat all the starters as they didn’t taste very fresh, particularly the fried mixed starter. That could have been down to the oil but it wasn’t very appetising. Salt and pepper chicken wings were ok, as was the Singapore vermicelli and chicken and cashew but otherwise we were dissatisfied with the £50 we’d spent.

This is a restaurant and takeaway it was a Monday evening and only one other couple were in. A funny Chinese lady welcomed us and the 2nd thing she said was “we are cash only no cards” immediately you question things and the ATMs are few and far between and often not working as on this occasion so a 2 mile drive was required. Having sorted that issue out the set meal B for 2 was ordered along with Chinese beer and wine. Food was truly amazing with proper authentic Chinese taste Total cost £48.50. Cash only!! Lovely food waitress was hilarious running round like a demented duck on fire but food was so nice. Worth a visit but go to ATM on the way

We didn’t have the same experience as some of the more recent reviewers. Indeed we came twice during our week in Filey. The owner/waitress was friendly; food was served with no great delay. We didn’t have duck but our meals were lovely.

I'm sorry but this has to the the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever eaten in. From start to finish it was a disgrace. The waitress / owner was arrogant and very unwelcomimg, the food was bland ... Especially the duck which was burnt to a crisp like it had been re-fried ... I've eaten in many Chinese and I wouldn't want anyone else to have this experience. Honestly the customer service from the person in charge was just horrendous ... Found her so so rude. The portions are so small, chicken dish had 3 pieces of chicken in, and the boiled rice portion wasn't enough to feed my 3 year old girl ... Can honestly say I've paid £108 for my meal tonight and I feel like I've had my pants pulled down ... Don't go here ! Horrible experience from start to finish!

Went for a takeout, admitted we were a bit early, the lady who served us certainly needed some customer service lessons 😳 we ordered a dish, can’t remember which one that was described as ‘hot and spicy’, it was so hot it was inedible, bearing in mind I can eat vindaloo at the Indian 😰

Always go here for food when in Filey. Never disappointed. The lady in there is so friendly and the food is amazing. Was sad to see there was not many people in but the takeaway service was very busy. It’s a must for food if you stay in filey.

Very strange experience. Looked to visit the restaurant. The lady opened the restaurant door, no tables were set but she gave us a menu and then disappeared for a while. She locked the door behind us. There was no music playing in the room so there was no ambience and could hear people talking in the Kitchen. No one came to take a drinks order so we decided to leave. Not sure what was going on!

Very disappointed with the meal and customer service . Refused to refund money for a takeaway we couldn't eat and had to drive 3 miles to return. Member of staff shouted at us and would only refund half the money despite us regularly eating here . From now on we will be going somewhere else.

Our Last night in filey tonight and probably had the worst Chinese restaurant meal ever.... I didnt want to moan on fb but I can't hold back..Gold River on milford st filey where Do I start.... I know it's out of season and a very windy (dudley) wet night but it was my birthday...restaurant was totally empty but we thought its a cold night nobody be out.....cold night omg what a frezzing welcome from a woman mending a heater stripped down on a table in the takeaway bit next door.....then to the food lol.....starters arrived in less than 5 mins....spare ribs luke warm and hayleys dumplings nothing like steamed etc but fried and rock hard....in fact they wernt dumplings more like pork balls in batter....my main ... curried beef and fried rice.....ok I suppose but my local delivery in leeds miles better...hayleys main....sweet and sour pork......again rock hard .... 2 small bottles of beer each and rushed in and put in less than 45 mins .......52 bloody quid and felt 100 % ripped off .... oh got a scoop of ice cream between us and a candle lit and happy birthday sung to me in broken English/ Chinese .... come on £52 !!!!! Don't go anyone in filey

We were on the final leg of our holiday on the East Yorks coast. We stopped at the Gold River for dinner. My partner had vegetables with cashew nuts and boiled rice, I had a special friend rice. The food appeared very quickly and was very tasty. Add two diet cokes and the bill came to £12ph. Very good value for money. The lady was very pleasant and chatty, maybe she was having an off day? ;-)

Unparalleled customer service!!! Greeted by the words"don't sit there unless you've got time" in a less than polite manner filled my wife and son with high expectations 😁 We mailed and promptly left with empty bellies but a story to tell. If you like your customer service rude and aggressive, get yourself to the gold river. The place of dreams 😂😂😂

We have been to Gold River recently while in Filey for a week on the coast & were really happy with the quality of the dishes presented & service provided.We enjoyed all our family favourites, from crispy chicken in Peking sauce, chicken in Satay sauce, to BBQ ribs & Singaporean Fried rice. The dishes were tasty & served to a high standard. Oh yes, the salt & chilli chips were excellent!Please note - they only accept cash (not sure why?) so come prepared, as the nearest cash machine is a 5-10 min walk at Tesco’s. When next in Filey, we shall return!

Staff were very friendly. Food was very tasty and plenty of it. Sadly they are too small to cater for large groups on one table but we were quite happy on 2 tables (16 people) although it was cramped. Plenty of choice food wise. Would eat there again.

Went to this restaurant yesterday with my partner and our little girl. We ordered some drinks and waited almost half an hour before anyone came to take our order. And this was after asking 3 different staff if we could please make an order. It was like we were invisible! I've never experienced such rudeness and bad service. I asked the lady who gave is our drinks if we could please order and she said, I don't take food orders. After half an hour and going to the 4th staff member to please take our order someone came to our table. No apologies about the delay from anyone. The lady who took our order was the rudest person I've ever met. It was like it was an inconvenience for her to place our order. After trying to explain what we wanted to order to her, she was that rude that we just said, cancel it. The place didnt deserve our money. I paid for our drinks and yet again no apology at all. I said to the drinks lady (who cant take food orders apparently) why did we have to wait so long and she said that they were serving in the takeaway. I've never experienced anything like it. And their rudeness and unhospitable manner was shocking and cost them around £50+ from us! We ended up walking around looking for another Chinese restaurant and found one called the Golden Dragon which was honestly amazing. The staff at the Golden Dragon were so kind and lovely to us, especially my daughter. The food and value for money at the Golden Dragon was so much better.Wouldn't recommend the the Golden River at all. Avoid! X

Always order from here when on our annual reighton sands holiday and always very impressed. Delivered within the hour to the caravan door - fantastic. Always come with complimentary dishes this time spring rolls and banana fritters. The beef in black bean sauce is the best we have tasted. Looking forward to next time already. 5 star Chinese

We had a delicious banquet for two where everything was freshly prepared and had an authentic Chinese taste. The pork and beef dishes were delicious. The ambience was good, the service was excellent and we particularly liked the bamboo china.

Four of us came for a meal here on 26th July and after reading some of the reviews I was a little apprehensive as we’ve been here before year after year when we holiday in Filey and always found it fine. We had a lovely meal!! Crab and sweet corn soup, sweet & sour soup, sharing crispy duck to start, all very nice. My main was prawn chop suey which was tasty. Others had sizzling pork, beef & broccoli stir fry and sizzling beef. All excellent. The service was fast and the young girl who served us was efficient and friendly. There were complementary prawn crackers to start with and complementary fortune cookies to finish. Perfect. Can highly recommend.

Ordered a banquet meal for 2 to be delivered to The Bay resort, Filey. Arrived quite quickly but food was average at best or even poor quality. Certainly not worth nearly £30.

We gave this takeaway the benefit of the doubt and decided to try it again.

Called in for a meal on Saturday and had the best Chinese meal in years! The service was prompt and efficient. We will be back. Don't know where the other reviewers had eaten but from our experience it was not here!

This has gone down. The food was dry and a microwave was used. The staff were not friendly. Only had 3 stars for hygiene. Didn't see this before we ordered. We ate a little then threw the rest away. One to avoid unless you require sudden weight loss within the hour.

We went for an evening meal here, we had only been sat at our table about two minutes and given a menu to look at. The waitress took our order and the meal was placed on our table in less than three minutes!! To be honest it didn't look appealing or appetizing and in that short time from ordering to actually receiving the meal it was obviously not cooked fresh. I tried my meal and it was terrible, it was tasteless and bland, my husband's choice was no better. After telling the waitress that I was not happy with the meal she immediately took it away and asked if I'd like something else to which I said no, by this time I had been put off. We settled the bill less my meal and left. There was a party of five also in at the same time and they seemed to be having reason to complain. So even if you're starving don't go to the Gold River....give it a wide birth.!!!

I don’t particularly like giving negative reviews but our meal was very average. The starters of spring rolls and chicken skewers were ok but my wife had a scallops and prawns dish , the scallops were cut in half and very small and the prawns should have been king prawns but were small and in a tempura batter. The beef in the satay was also chewy although the Pinot Grigio was decent.

We’d give it a zero if we had the option.

Struggling to find sonewhere to eat in one of the busiest weeks of the year and found this little gem. A;lthough very busy service was swift and friendly and the meal was excellent. Note that this restaurant is cash only.

We thought we would order chinese on the last night of our holiday and decided to give gold river a whirl. We were all very impressed. The meal came within the hour which we were made aware of and expected by a friendly delivery man brought to our exact caravan which we thought was amazing. The food was great we all enjoyed it especially the complimentary beef in black bean sauce that was included (we spent over £50) turned out to be our fave dish. Will definitely be using again on our annual holiday to reighton

We called in for a takeaway in August(why I mentioned the month is irreverent!)

Made a telephone booking for our anniversary. Never told that it was cash only. There was no greeting with just a hand gesture pointing out our table and no eye contact. At no time did anyone say good evening or suchlike. We were never made to feel welcome and it was touch and go whether we left and found somewhere else. However we stuck it out and the food I have to say was good but that is the only positive. A great pity. What should have been an evening of celebration turned out to be one of disappointment.

We had 4 mini meat spring rolls served with delicious sweet and sour sauce. Best I’ve ever had not the usual over sweet version. Chicken fried rice and special meat curry. Shuttle curry flavour and nicely thicken sauce best I’ve ever had with very good Chinese chips. Includes small bag of prawn crackers which were perfect and fortune cookies. Will certainly go again and restaurant also.

I went here because the Golden Dragon (which has higher average ratings on tripadvisor) was fully booked. Expecting something average, I was very pleasantly surprised. The Gold River had a much better interior, and the food had a very clean, light taste - one of the best chinese meals I've ever had.

Called in for our evening meal, it was quiet in the restaurant but it was extremely clean and neat, the waitress was friendly. We had the duck as a starter it was extremely tasty and the cucumber and spring onion very fresh. Main course was crispy shredded beef and chicken Cantonese style with egg fried rice and noodles, all delicious. Normally would take a large bottle of water to bed as always wake up very thirsty after Chinese but this was not the case after visiting Gold River Chinese. Well worth a visit

Visiting Filey last week and fancied Chinese meal. Hotel owners suggested this - food was very good cooked fresh and enjoyed it that much went back 2 nights later for another meal. Worth a visit.

Ordered food from this place can honestly say the curry sauce was like water no taste chips were half cooked the fried rice was cold and the prawn crackers could of put a window out with them what a waste of money wouldnt order again from here

Our first visit and it won't be the last. Excellent food and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Can't believe we've been coming to Filey all these years and haven't visited this place. Definitely will return.

Eaten here on a few occasions the food was good the staff were friendly also received a complimentary calendar and bottle of soy sauce a big thumbs up from this happy customer.

Had set menu for two, starter crispy duck very dry and greasy all other dishes tasted very much the same.

Very disappointing takeaway. My meal contained 5 small pieces of squid so poor value for money. Took an hour to arrive and was handed to me in an old wine box! The veg spring rolls were so small and over cooked, I was pretty much just eating crusty pastry. I'm afraid this has put me off booking to eat in the restaurant

We arrived quite late and had not booked, but we received a friendly greeting and were told that although they did not have a table for us, if we returned in 15 minutes they could accommodate us. We went to the nearby pub for a quick drink and when we returned they had a table ready for us in the large room at the back which was very nice. There were 3 of us and we chose a set meal which was excellent and the service attentive. They only accept cash, but there is an ATM at the nearby Spar. I can certainly recommend it.

Just been to this restaurant again, the food is excellent, and the service great. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Unfortunately no cards, only cash accepted, but as long as you know this it's certainly not a showstopper. If you visit Filey, then a visit to this restaurant is a must.

Please believe me when I say the woman who runs or owns this Chinese is vile. From the moment we arrived to the minute we left, the way she spoke to the two young boys serving, was nothing short of cruel and the whole restaurant acknowledged this also. Snapping at them, pushing them about and completely embarrassing them. She pushed one out the way to get to our table and she spilt my wine all over my plate. Onto the food, amazing but not huge portions which didn't bother me as quality exceeds quantity in my eyes. Meal over time to pay, no card machine. "Go to the bank while I get the boy to watch your children" I was mortified and ran there and back asap to find one of the poor young boys stood with my 2 and 4 year old children. Poor boy. I then asked the two young boys if they kept their tips to which there response was "no it goes towards our wages" wowza slave labor at its best, thought that was now illegal? correct me if I'm wrong. Anyhow on the whole food brilliant, service and environment... due to that one awful individual was shocking and it ruined it.

We arrived on a Weds evening, got seated in a very quaint feng-shui little restaurant. Food came quickly and went even quicker, absolutely gorgeous! The service was great, the energy of the place was soothing and welcoming. Do stop by if in Filey and the sizzling beef fillet is a must have!

Read reviews, not sure, but gave it a try. Phoned in order, delivered on time, food was as good as our Chinese at home. Will see if this is consistent but for now happy to recommend Gold River takeaway. Very tasty, good and hot.

Another visit to this fabulous little restaurant we have been many time and have never been disappointed. Food is always piping hot it looks and tastes great A good choice of menu all at a good price Always a pleasure to visit when we are at Scarborough and on the plus side if you are staying on a caravan site they deliver

One waitress on duty, she was very good but seemed to throw food at you as she was at times run off her feet. Parking a problem and only take cash payments

Whenever we are in Filey we always treat ourselves to a meal in the Gold River, we hadnt booked as it was a Sunday evening out of season, but there were a few people in, the food was excellent, just the right size portions, not too overfacing, well cooked and presented can recommend.

We live locally but even if you were on holiday you would receive the same service with a smile that makes you enjoy that service-Delivery staff are what makes Gold River special they are always polite, happy to deliver, and ensure you have what you ordered on receiving your order-Staff that can deliver on time also with a smile says everything to anyone person. Food is always second to none. Darmo is ace.

If you're staying in Filey, I'd recommend this Chinese for value. The quality of our takeaway was good and we felt the waiting time for our food was not too long. We'd eat from there again.

Our third year and food and service always very good. We had sweet and sour chicken, chicken chow mein and veg chow mein. Three happy customers. Our cottage was close by - and we always eat early - so there was very little wait

Had a really good meal here .The food was well cooked and remained hot throughout as all served on warming plates . The sizzling steak was devine. Freindly helpful staff .

All the while celebrating my birthday, we decided to give this place another try. I can only say this time the service was much better, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was superb! We would definitely come back again!

We came here on a Monday night, table for 2. Ordered drinks and ordered a starter to share followed by main courses. The service was good, food was first rate. Have paid a lot more money for much less authenticity i the past. Place was a bit quiet, unsurprisingly on a Monday but it looked cosy enough to generate a nice atmosphere.

Food was good, four of us dined here but there was only enough room on the food heater for three of the dishes so one of the party had meal going cold very quickly, there was room on table for another heater but none was forth coming. staff friendly, place clean and bright.

Weve visited the Gold River several times and never disappointed, the food is delicious, I really enjoyed the sweet and sour King Prawns not too sweet, the rice is soft and fluffy, Starters were substantial, 2 courses, with rice and a bottle of wine came to less than 50 pounds, good value, nice surroundings and friendly staff. Always look forward to eating out here.

We tried ring Golden River for about half an hour before giving up and going to the takeaway. It seemed as if the phones had been taking the hook due to the amount of orders being rung in. I ordered the meal, it was for 5 people so the order was large and I was told it would be a 45 minute wait. The guy knocked some money from the bill as a good will gesture due to the lengthy wait. Once we'd got home and sorted the food out we realised that they had thrown in a few extras. All of the meals where delicious and the portions where a fantastic size, probably enough for two people to share one meal. I would definitely recommend the prawn toast and sweet and sour chicken. Well worth the wait and we would definitely re-visit!

We visit each time we come for a holiday. Small, off the high street restaurant and take away. There is an extensive range of food and all the dishes we had were very tasty....so much so that we went back the following evening. Staff happy to help with allergies. Quick service, more spacious than it looks. Definitely recommend.

We called for an evening meal with family and friends, which happens once or twice a year when we are holidaying in the area. The Gold River comes recommended by a friend who lives at Filey. At first site the restaurant appears to be a little quirky but as ever the service was prompt and courteous and the food amazing. Can't wait to call again next year.

The service was excellent. However the food could have been better.Most of the food was overcooked and the sauces were not as described e.g hot and sour was missing the hot part.

We visited on a Tuesday evening and were very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is a family run business and they are very friendly and welcoming. Service was efficient. The food was delicious, plentiful and filling. We had a banquet consisting of mixed starters, duck pancakes and then rice with six mains. They also swapped dishes to suit us. The food was served in good time and was hot and fresh. I would highly recommend this restaurant and would visit again if we return to Filey.

Ordered 3 take away meals,2 house special fried rice as 1 house special chow mein.6 containers arrived,2 plain old fried rice and 1 just noodles and 3 containers of the exact same ingredients. I'm a great fan of Cantonese and Peking food. And generally eat Chinese on a weekly basis from different outlets. The crispy seaweed was soggy chewy and reheated. Crispy aromatic duck was incinerated. Sweet-and-sour King prawns Cantonese style was source from a bottle over stodgy reheated battered scampi. Kung Po chicken tasteless!All in all a takeaway to avoid!

Having drunk a large amount of beer on Sunday afternoon the 4 of us decided to go to Gold River for tea, we ordered Crispy Duck and a Platter to share and we were not disappointed both dishes were very tasty, we ordered four different dishes for main along with Fried Rice and Chips all to share, i personally ordered the Curried Beef and thoroughly enjoyed it the Beef was fat free and lovely and tender.The only thing that spoilt my visit was when i visited the mens toilet, the stench coming from the toilet was appalling in fact it was so bad it was causing me to wretch and i nearly brought my food back up, i left the toilet with out using it even though i was bursting for a Pee, i mentioned the toilet to two members of staff but neither seemed interested, they really need to get the drains sorted.

Staying in self catering ordered one evening. Lovely food well cooked, hot and plentiful quickly delivered by a very helpful polite person

Hubby and I enjoyed a delicious meal here. Tasty duck and generous portions of main courses. Well worth a little visit.

Just ordered 3 takeaway meals all was very tasty and good size portions will order from hear next time we are staying in Filey

The best takeaway we have had in a long time. Would definitely recommend to anyone. The food was very nicely cooked and all main courses comes with boiled rice or chips. Very decent size portions
