Goddards at Greenwich in Greenwich

Food was mediocre. Mash had zero taste. Friend smothered her food with salt and pepper as she thought it was so bland and we'd gone there because she was desperate for pie & mash after too long without. Also, the pies are large but the portion of mash is very small, and the gravy (not the liquor) was as tasteless as the mash. The atmosphere was meh but they may have been due to the time of day. There were also guests having a bit of a barney. Which might have been interesting if we could hear clearly enough to understand what was occurring 😄. I will say that the staff were nice and the gentleman who cleaned the tables was wonderfully warm and friendly. The place was very clean, and the tea was excellent (would be better in a proper mug!). But unfortunately, for a restaurant, the food just wasn't great. And this isn't the first time I've been there and thought as much. There are far better pie and mash eateries around.

Nice large pie, average mash, ok liquor, weak chilli vinegar. Though it is good value & the staff were very friendly. Essentially, it's a tad touristy here for me...

If I could give zero, I would. The most unfriendly and unprofessional service I have ever seen. Food has no taste. I feel as if I got my money stolen.

It was very packed, but you still can find a place to sit (especially if it's not a big group). The fact that they had gluten free pies melted my heart. The price is also very friendly. Definitely recommended especially for fellow gluten intolerant people.

Loved it. We’ve had pie and mash with liquor sauce plus jellied eels on our travel food bucket list for some time. I’m a Brit, wife’s Colombian, son is born in the US so had mixed expectations between the 3 of us. Brilliant experience and wonderful customer service. Many thanks.

I ate this typical English beef pie and mash dish and was satisfied with the choice. The place is very clean and welcoming. The guys were all very kind and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to try typical English cuisine.

Typical English food: fast, cheap and filling. Good, in fact. The colorful adjacent market is worth a visit; less artificial, more sincere and original than many other more famous ones in London (Covent Garden, for example)

Literally can't fault this place. Good quality pies, hot food, value for money, not too long a wait, very English, tasty. Don't know how they do it but really hits the spot in every way. Wholesome goodness. And the staff are (at the time of writing) friendly and efficient. A solid team.

I took my 90 year old Neighbour back to her local haunts , she is a ex market trader from Greenwich , so there was only one place to grab lunch for her to reminisce .. Absolutely perfect pie, mash and eels! Having lived in Cornwall for many years, I don't get many chances to enjoy a proper pie & mash these days. So on a recent trip to London, I headed for the nearest pie and mash shop, which happened to be this one. It was everything I wanted it to be - friendly and fast service, good value, a nice place with plenty of seating, and delicious food. All components were spot on. A special mention for the stewed eels... I could have easily polished off a double portion!

VERY poor quality pies. This place doesn't seem to care about quality - presumably because it gets a lot of one off tourists. The pies were really bad - bland filling and soggy pastry. there are better places if you want to try pie and mash - try Chrisp Street Market.

We were very excited to come here as we have heard about its reputation within the Greenwich community. Unfortunately, the food was very mediocre, honestly less than that. There was barely any flavor to the gravy or the parsley, and the steak and ale pie was like cafeteria food. There’s nothing ‘special’ about these pies and mash, and even with that in mind, it might be considered ‘less than non-special’. I don’t know if I’d ever come here again, although part of me thinks ‘ok I must have come on a bad day’. But honestly it was not good food. No flavor. Just slop.

The ladies at the counter were not very nice, the guy was very patient and kind. The hot eels were better than the jellied ones. The pies are great!

The shop is known for its pie and mash. They also serve British traditional food like jellied eels. We got the steak and ale pie, lamb and rosemary pie and pie & mash with beans. They were all nice. Along with your pie and mash you can get gravy or liquor (which is a parsley sauce). They have chilli vinegar on the table, if you're eating in the shop. If you fancy dessert, there are plenty of traditional British options. Usually you can't go wrong with a sticky toffee pudding. We didn't get any, so can't comment. What can you say real pie and mash not the fake stuff that they dish up in so-called gastro pubs always pay a visit when visiting Greenwich

Top pie and mash. They do some old school puddings too. Also, for the woke crowd you can have gravy with your pie. They're preserving a tradition I dare say as important as any other being celebrated in Greenwich.

Visited on 17 Sep 2024. The pie was flavorful but not overly salted, top quality! Efficient ordering and collection process. We sat upstairs, comfortably.

What a find, fantastic place. We were in London for a night visiting the O2 and the morning after we needed something for brunch. Opened at 10 and was on a way to the station. Been a while since I had sampled the traditional pie and mash and I was not disappointed. Good portion sizes, great taste and very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend.

Service was great, staff were friendly. I was a bit disappointed with the food though. The pie crust was a bit hard & doughy in places, filling very bland. I decided to try it because it's so renowned but tbh I prefer Raymond's in Eltham.

Came here after seeing it on the Love and London Youtube channel. First time in London and my partner and I wanted to try authentic, local dishes. The lamb and rosemary pie with liquor and mash did not disappoint. One of the ladies at the counter recommended the sticky toffee pudding with custard which was good.

What a fantastic place for lunch. Stopped by en route to the nearby maritime museum. Loads of choices of pie, being vegetarian even had a choice of two - cheese and onion or soya mince! We plumped for the soya, single pie plus single mash with the vegan gravy. All washed down with a mug of tea! Absolute gut buster but loved every mouthful. It’s fantastic value at £6.20. Loads of seating both upstairs and downstairs. Staff who work here are lovely too!

The best place for Pie and Mash in Greenwich. It's quite busy and fast paced, so you give your order, wait to collect it and then pay. After paying, you can find a seat. They have extra seating on the top floor. I highly recommend giving them a try!

Came across Goddard's while visiting Greenwich. Great food and fantastic service. Highlight of our trip to London. Couldn't recommend any higher.

Good food and a big selection of pies.

Went for the quintessential pie mash and liquor. Didn’t really know what to expect. Ended up with a fusion of blandness. Couldn’t tell the meat from the mash or the mash from the liquor. I’ll say this though, the ladies in there were really nice to talk to.

Well never really had an authentic pie and mash so can't compare but a true local recommend this. I had the lamb rosemary pie with gravy and mash. It was very delicious.

Came here as a recommendation... Now it's my turn to recommend it!!! The food was pretty good, let's.consider that I haven't had anything I had so I have no comparison point, but size and flavor-wise it was great! The desert is something else... However you need to consider that it is pretty big so, share it The place is very family oriented, this gives a more home-like vibe and taste.

Meat pies are similar to Taco Bell in the States. The pies are stuffed with low-quality runny ground beef... similar to that of taco bell. After eating them, I felt uncomfortable all day. Regret trying this dish. This is a self-service restaurant, similar to a cafeteria. -- Tourist from the U.S.A.

Quintessential British fastfood

Well, I'm afraid that I was rather disappointed. The restaurant was cold due to the door and window being open, the plates were cold also-who on earth serves what is supposed to be hot food on cold plates?! So the food went cold quickly, due to both of these factors and cold gravy is not good! I ordered a child's pie and mash and there was no offer of mushy peas or beans (as stated on the menu board) and the lady snapped that we'd has two scoops of mash! I ordered their £6.50 deal, she didn't ask me which pie I wanted and there was no decaf tea, so had to have water!

I was there a week ago, I was in Greenwich for the South Bank Holiday, and I had been looking forward to a nice pie for a while... the place was quite crowded, despite the rather late opening hours, but on the ground floor the ladies were milling away customers speeding up the queue... my choice fell on a Steak & Ale pie with double mash and gravy sauce, accompanied by an excellent London Pride... very good... to say the least.

This is a Greenwich institution, and you'll often see tourists standing outside taking a picture of the pie, mash & eels sign. It's popular too, and with good reason, it's excellent value. The location can't be beat either, sitting at the entrance to Greenwich Market.

Tasty traditional steak and ale pie with mash and gravy. Served fast by friendly staff. Good sized serving with loads of gravy for only $6.50.

Great restaurant, great value for money

Typical London restaurant where they serve classic pies with different fillings together with mashed potatoes. Absolutely recommended for lunch or a snack if you are in Greenwich, I have been there twice and both times I ate very well. Very kind and sweet staff, they are very helpful. The strong point is definitely the prices, one of the least expensive places I've tried and above all the good quality of the products. Really well managed and clean place, it's worth going there.

The combination of pie and mesh gravy was a bit bland and difficult, and the combination of chicken mushroom pie and liquor sauce was delicious. Chicken mushroom liquor seems to suit the taste of Koreans.

Being English I took my South American friends to experience Pie and mash. Sadly disappointing. Quite large chunks of potato in the mash and the pie pastry was dense and possibly not cooked though fully. Gravy was okay. Price would have been okay if it had been half decent. I went years ago and it was acceptable then. Perhaps just a bad day. People working there were fine.
