Goddards at Greenwich in Greenwich

Resto très sympa et original, ambiance cafétéria. On commande au comptoir, on prend son plateau et on nous donne notre assiette remplie. La spécialité : les boules de purée façon glace avec les "pies" : tourte avec une grosse pâte, dans laquelle se trouve une bouillie de viande hachée avec de la sauce. Ne pas hésiter à demander la sauce supplémentaire avant de payer, sinon ils ne la rajoutent pas dans l'assiette. C'est bon, pour de la nourriture anglaise, rien de gastronomique cependant.

Zum Ende unseres 4-tägigen Familientrips nach und durch London haben wir uns auch das östliche Greenwich als Ziel rausgesucht, speziell um im Goddard's Essen zu gehen - ehrlich gesagt wissen wir schon gar nicht mehr, wer uns diese Empfehlung gegeben hat... Das Goddard's at Greenwich ist ein richtiges gutbürgerliches Traditionslokal, wie man es sich vorstellt! Der untere Speise- und Bestellraum inkl. langer Theke ist ebenso rustikal, hölzern eingerichtet wie auch der obere Speiseraum und lädt trotz relativ großem Trubel zum Verweilen ein. Die Speisekarte ist übersichtlich, denn hier gibt es hauptsächlich "Pie & Mash" mit "Liquor" oder/und Gravy (vegan) und Peas. Die "Küchelchen" kann man mit verschiedenen Fleischfüllungen bestellen, die vegetarische Variante basiert auf Soja (meine Frau war begeistert!). Bei so leckeren Hauptspeisen darf es nicht an passenden Desserts fehlen und die gab es für uns in Form von Sticky Toffee Pudding mit Vanilleeis und Rhubarb Crumble mit Custard - zum Reinlegen! Von einer Warteschlange sollte man sich auf keinen Fall abschrecken lassen, denn es geht sehr zügig und man wartet nicht lang - wir standen 2m vor der Tür und kamen in weniger als 5min zum Bestellen.

You just have to go there if you're in the area but don't be too greedy I went for two pies and was a bit overwhelmed, and had no room for the rhubarb and custard crumble 🧐

Pies and mashed potatoes. I had the chicken and mushroom pie. It was good. I had a couple of big chunks of chicken. The outer edges of the crust were a little over cooked but tasty.

Nice place, fast service, good pies. We took beef and chicken with mushrooms. The chicken one has a lot of gravy inside and there are pieces of meat, but no meat was found in the beef one. Lots of dough and more potatoes. Not enough meat. The prices are affordable and everything is delivered very quickly. But the apple crumble is very tasty. Two scoops of ice cream and a lot of apples)

I had double pie and double mash with gravey and it was lush. I would have given it 5 stars but the apple crumble let it done as the crumble was more like a pie top. Staff very polite.

First pie and mash I've had in 60 years+. Disappointed as it didn't taste the same as the one I used to have in Woolwich in the 60s.

The place is nice and convenient. However, the flavor of the beef pie is almost non-existent, the same goes for the gravy and the mash. We only gave the second star for the pie with lamb and rosemary whose filling had a vague flavour. The disappointing pastry. Maybe the problem is that we are Italian and we like good food.

The food was served warm, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. However, the flavors were quite bland— the potatoes tasted a bit like boxed ones, the gravy didn’t have much flavor, and the pie lacked distinct flavors of a traditional pie.

I ordered the minced beef pie and mash with liquor. Both of them were without taste. The stuff are lovely and the place looks great, but the food needs to improve.

Now, this gaff has been around for ages, just like the old pie and mash. Traditional, working peoples food from the time of docks and markets. Goddards, has the Traditional pie, mash and liquor, jellied eels for the more discerning palate. But, unlike many others they understand that variety is the spice of life. Many different pie flavours, including veggie. Not forgetting, the sponge puds, bread and butter pudding and crumbles. If you fancy a bit of Traditional old London nosh with a modern twist, give it a go my old china, your north and your derby will thank you and you won't get the Eartha's afterwards.

I don't like to fail, so it's the most basic and cheapest. I ate Beef Pie & Mash It tastes different from Australian meat pie. The staff were all friendly and the meat inside was delicious. Good.

Get the Lamb and Rosemary Pie, you won't be disappointed, it's always bob on.

Cheap and cheerful food. Goddard is a very dependable institution for pie and mash. The eels don't particularly appeal to me, but if you fancy trying a London delicacy, this is the place for you. Not surprisingly, being very close to the University of Greenwich this has become popular amongst students.

If you want to try a local flavor and place, you can visit, but pie and mash is a very average flavor. The town is calm and beautiful.

First time I've been to this place for pie and mash, and I would say it was lovely, the apple pie and custard was delicious to 😋

English pub that meets its expectations in terms of decoration but the food is extremely bland and insipid. The "feet" are generous in terms of quantity, but it's like putting in only bread and also without salt. Quite disappointed, because we were hoping for a culinary experience in Greenwich at lunchtime and we missed the opportunity. My boyfriend (from the UK) took me there yesterday. We each ordered different pies and mash and shared. I ordered the lamb & rosemary with gravy and he ordered the chicken & mushroom with liquor. Both were fantastic! The portions were perfect. Loved the atmosphere. Have told my UK boyfriend he needs to make some for tea (dinner) one night.

A bustling restaurant, serving proper English grub. Food portions are massive, and the food is very reasonably priced. Both their pies and mash were superb. And if you haven't tried eels before, you have to try their stewed eels. Also, cannot forget to mention the staff, who were super friendly, and service was very quick 5 out of 5. Top class. A must visit if you are in the Greenwich area. Will definitely be visiting again.

We had sweet cherry pie with custard - pie shortcrust wasn't the best, but the cherry filling was great and it comes with a huge portion of custard. Tea was ok, but the tea cup should be cleaner. Otherwise it is a good place to try a traditional or sweer pie!

Everything is very simple and tasty.

Good pie mash and peas at a very affordable price. Busy pub for lunch but friendly staff and lots of seats. Beautiful rooms, especially upstairs (nice view). I took the chicken and ham with peas and gravy. It was good, and very generous (you shouldn’t worry about being still hungry after that). But I was very disappointed with the gravy : it had no taste at all ! But still, I recommend this great pub.

Its my first time visiting Goddards with my family for their signature beef pie and mash.! Its like a fast food restaurant, everyone gets their pie fast and they sit and enjoy.! Reasonably priced and we licked the plates clean.!

The pies taste absolutely awful when this is the only thing this place is famous for😐they don’t taste like anything, nor does gravy or mash. Even tesco’s pies are better than this, I genuinely don’t understand why there’s so many good reviews.

Tried the lamb and rosemary pie today, absolutely delicious.

Steak pie had very hard chewy beef. Definitely not slow cooked. Steak and kidney pie tiny bits of meat. Nice busy atmosphere but food we had was Disappointing. I guess it's like LS Lowry paintings...everyone pretends it's good. But it isn't.

Best place for a traditional pie. Good selection of different kinds and comes with mash potatoes, gravy and parsley sauce. We had the beef and the lamb with rosemary. Highly recommend, even lunch time you will find a seat. Prices are super fair, worth it.

Unexpectedly delicious, the eel must be sprinkled with spicy vinegar and pepper, the taste is instantly different. The decoration service and presentation have a retro and rustic feel, which is very nice and has a great atmosphere.

Loved the staff. 1st timer with pie and mash. Even with the pepper and vinegar it was on the bland flavourless side. Chose not to waste the calories on finishing it. The young lady at the counter was delightful.

One of our family favourite spot! My son loves it and we are going there often for pies and for the amazing homemade desserts. The portions are big, the pies are super tasty (I always order steak and ale so good that I can't change) We usually share the dessert because after the pie we are super full, the tables are confortable and the staff is friendly. (My only downside is, is not dog friendly).

Probably the worst place I’ve ever been, pie was dry and the gravy tasted of nothing at all. When I took it to the counter, he said “that’s just how they are” terrible 🤣

L'adresse parfait pour un Pie & Mash traditionnel à la bonne franquette ! Commande au comptoir, service express sur plateau repas puis direction une des tables communes pour déguster sa spécialité so British. Très appréciable : rien n'est salé, c'est rare et c'est parfait. Bonne ambiance en salle, où les touristes côtoient les travailleurs du coin venant avaler leur déjeuner sur le pouce. J'adore, je recommande et je reviendrai !

A proper 'spit and sawdust' venue. Decent food at almost unbelievable prices for London. The chicken and ham pie was so-so, but the cherry pie dessert with custard was amazing.

Such a popular, and very busy restaurant, I luckily found only a couple of people in front of me, and a space on a table to eat. Settled for cheese and onion pie, mash, peas and gravy, plus a cup of tea. Service amazingly quick, the meal was substantial and filling, fantastic value. I may have had a dessert, good selection on the menu, but by the time I had finished the meal, the queue was out of the door. A very different dining experience.

I try to squeeze a visit to Goddards into any day-trip I make to London, and yesterday was no exception. I always find the staff to be very helpful, and the food to be simple, tasty and good value. During this lunch, I had a chilli minced beef and a cheese and onion pie with double mash and liquor. I always carry my food upstairs to find salt, pepper, malt vinegar and chilli vinegar at the tables. I’ve never had a dessert at Goddards, so maybe next time I’ll have a single pie and a crumble instead. Great place.

Atmosphere of the restaurant was great. It was packed full of people, so obviously very popular. The younger lady behind the counter asking for our order was quite rude and impatient, but the other members of staff seemed pleasant and chatted a bit about the history of their family business. The food was disappointing and abit hit or miss. There was no flavour to most of the food. The mash was lumpy and dry and the inside of 2 out of 4 of our pies had no flavour at all. It is great that they offer a gluten free option, but I would suggest avoiding it. The pastry tasted quite bad and the inside filling was just mushy with no flavour at all. On the other hand, my daughter highly recommends the chicken and mushroom pie. She ate every last bit. We probably wouldn't return but appreciate the experience.

Goddard’s at Greenwich is hands down my favourite pie and mash spot in London. The pies are fantastic, with a perfectly crisp and flaky pastry and rich, delicious fillings. The mash is smooth and creamy, and the liquor has that perfect herby taste that makes the dish complete. If liquor isn’t your thing, they also have gravy, which pairs just as well. The portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable, making it great value for money. The atmosphere is lively and full of character, with the classic pie shop feel that adds to the experience. Even though it’s always busy, the staff are lovely and work quickly while staying friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to go back to try one of the desserts, they looked yummy! Sinceramente, no teníamos idea de qué esperar. En Greenwich, estaba cayendo y teníamos hambre. Vi el letrero de 'Pies and Mash' (bueno '... y anguilas' en realidad). Decidimos que era un día de tarta y puré así que entramos. Fue genial. Parecía ser mitad turistas extranjeros y mitad locales (que todos parecían conocer al personal, etc). Servicio rápido y todo muy bueno y justo lo que se necesitaba. El personal limpiando las mesas todo parecía muy alegre y educado. Una buena broma. Creo que pagamos 24 libras por nosotros tres, que parecía bastante buena relación calidad-precio

Delicious Traditional pie and mash shop in a lovely area of Greenwich. Great customer service with staff always offering a smile or a helping hand and a compliment or two if your lucky 😂. A touristy spot although there are a handful of regulars such as myself. Optional Communal tables or normal smaller tables that you don’t have to share. Always leave full and happy.

First time in England for New years Eve day and the first time to eat here. Pies are really nice, very filling, and the mashies (mashed potato) are fluffy. Very busy place and popular, and I'm glad my sister in law recommended it.

Visitamos Goddard’s por primera vez el sábado 1 de febrero. Habíamos querido visitar durante bastante tiempo después de darnos cuenta de que hacen tartas sin gluten. Teníamos dos pasteles sin gluten uno con salsa gf y el otro con licor gf, y una lata de coca y creo que pagamos 13 libras extrañas. El chef nos hizo salsas separadas y tomó unos 10 minutos para que nuestra comida estuviera lista. No he comido pastel y puré durante varios años desde que no tengo gluten, así que fue genial probarlo. Sinceramente no es el mejor pastel que he comido, pero ambos comimos nuestra comida y no puedes equivocarte en una fría tarde de enero con pastel caliente y puré, y generalmente los alimentos gf son más caros, así que fue genial que esto fuera barato y alegre.

Always love Goddards pie and mash , it’s a proper traditional pie and mash place, but they also provide alternatives that include vegetarian and different variations on the original. The staff are always so lovely (especially Jo, she’s the star of the shop)

I honestly don't understand the good reviews of this place, without any flavor, everything flat, I would say that the food was thawed, and then reheated, too much sauce on the foot, the mashed potato was the worst I've eaten in a long time, absent service having to order They clean the tables, and self service when ordering. The bathrooms are unpresentable. A place not to recommend.

Typical. Dine in pub. Excellent atmosphere. Order your food before you sit down. Bring your tray to your table. Plenty of seating upstairs as well. Food was fabulous. Basic brown gravy on mashed potatoes with beef pie, you can also get chicken items as well as peas and beans and things like that. If you’re looking for your greens. Great place highly recommend it. A very average pie, mash and liquor. I’ve had better elsewhere including Manze’s and Arments. The liquor was thin and tasteless and the chilli vinegar was sweet. The white pepper seemed very tame with no tang! The aforementioned chilli vinegar had big kebab shop size chilli’s. I’ve always thought the smaller birds eye type chilli was better?

Had the liquor, mash potatoes and chicken and mushroom pie, all washed down with a perfect cup of tea. My friend had the beef pie and she also said it was delicious. Great price, ate in, delicious. Clean and tidy. Lovely ladies serving. Toilets were clean and tidy. Feels very traditional. Had tourists and locals alike in there.

Generous, delicious portions of savoury pies and fluffy mash topped with rich gravy. What more can you ask for? This place is an institution. Order the jellied eels is you’re feeling brave (supposedly they’re an aphrodisiac!). I’d get them hot if it’s your first time with parsley sauce and chilli vinegar. Watch out for the bones in the middle. You order at the counter, where the service is friendly and efficient.

The small family address that we enjoy discovering. Bar service, wooden dining-style benches. Lots of people on Saturday, mainly Londoners. We have a traditional beef pie, some mash (with gravy otherwise it’s dry!) ​​and we can let ourselves be tempted by the old school desserts of the house

Lovely place. Huge variety of pies on the menu. The staff were friendly and chatty, they all looked like they enjoyed working there. Great prices for what you get, I had my pie and mash with gravy and my girlfriend had the liquor sauce. Both were yummy. I had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, not the best I've ever had but was tasty and a good size for the price. My girlfriend had the cherry pie with custard and that was delicious, again a generous size for the price. She commented that the food reminded her of her school dinners from her youth, and that's a good thing! Love thus place and will definitely return.

I had 3 types of pie. Steak and ale pie - a bit disappointing as taste plus it was a bit cold, maybe I had too big expectations from it as is my goto pie Beef pie - was ok, beef flavour was strong Chilli beef pie - was the best out of these 3, good mix of flavours The potatoes mash was a wee bland. The gravy helped, but is a long way from homemade mash.

Arrived here with a huge desire for some good pie & mash, but not the best experience. First of all the staff was quite rude and tried to hurry us as much as possible in a queue of 3 people. My partner and I bought 3 pieces, only one was hot and the rest of the food was cold. The taste, was not there really. The only one pie which was a little more decent was the Chilli pie, which had a little bit of flavour. I don't really recommend this place... Or just try it if you never had this kind of pieces.

Excellent stop near Cutty's Sark for authentic Local food at great prices. The cobbler dessert was amazing.

I'm a pie and mash lover, been fed it since a child, I just had to try this, I'm a soft bottom pie girl, I know some prefer "a crust" I don't, I like mine soft and sticky! The staff are lovely, so friendly and the atmosphere/feel of the place is magic! But to me, these pies are more what you would eat with chips and peas! Not horrible in style way, just not my taste - if your a crispy pie lover, this place is perfect! Xx

Let me tell you I'm def not picky with food and I can eat everything and I hate to say this, but omg this was so f gross that I couldn't eat more than one bite. The gravy was so bland it was completely tasteless. The pie was also bland and not flaky at all. And meat inside the pie... it was stinky and had some artifical taste. A disaster. The only thing that was bearable to eat was mashed potatoes.
