Glan yr Afon in Gwynedd

Booked for 2 nights at the Riverside. The bedrooms were recently refurbished and opened. The bedroom was excellent and bathroom likewise. We ordered what we wanted for breakfast on arrival and following morning was freshly cooked. Both mornings the cooked breakfast set us up for the day. Having been in North Yorkshire the previous week for 3 days the prices were comparable. Would we stay again. Yes, we certainly would.

Let's get the grumpy stuff out of the way. Whoever had been co-opted to front of house was miserable and accused me of asking for a white wine when I gave her the number of a red one. Then argued with me. When we looked at the menu, of five or six items, only one was still on- beef- which was what we all wanted anyway. It was the best Sunday lunch that I have had for about four years. The meat was succulent, not over-cooked, and the vegetables done to perfection. Tasty gravy and a great Yorkshire pudding. The woman who was keeping an eye on the callow waiting staff was lovely and friendly. A great place. Pannacotta for dessert and £23 for two courses. The place is fantastic. I understand it might be community-run, in which case they should allocate jobs to people who are temperamentally suited to carrying them out. If you want choice, maybe not for you, but a damn fine roast beef.

We made a last minute decision to go here for dinner as we had been out all day. It didn't disappoint at all. Fabulous quality food and great ambience. The lamb pie and the gnocchi was delicious. Well done Chef Jack👍

I would like to say that Erwan is a great member of the bar staff who had an excellent pour of Guinness but not just that most of all a great attitude and was very polite!! Definitely deserves a pay rise !!

We called in without booking, and they done everything they could to give us a table, we had the Welsh burger and Oh my! It's the best burger I've ever had, punk in the middle and full of flavour, just beautiful, highly recommend going, staf we're fantastic, service was excellent, food was outstanding. Great place!

We are on holiday in Pennal & the Riverside was ideal for the arrival day evening meal. We had booked the day before as the cottage owner had tipped us the wink it’d be busy. Starters & mains absolutely amazing. Of course we ate too much as the portion sizes are very generous. Lager & wines lovely too. The restaurant was busy but the staff were very welcoming & engaging. Nicely appointed restaurant, without being pretentious & we noted it’s a community owned pub restaurant, which added to our being very impressed. Can’t fault it & would say it’s probably the best place to eat out between Aberdovey, Pennal & Machynlleth.

We were staying in a cottage in this quiet village and had several recommendations from locals about this restaurant/hotel. Luckily we booked an early table as it very quickly filled up while we were there. The first thing we saw on entering was the bright airy feel and nicely appointed furnishings. A friendly welcome, sat down and drinks ordered. Between us we ordered mains of chicken and ham hock pie, a burger, and lamb steak. All were very tasty and plates cleared. A special mention for the pie, which 2 of us ordered. It had a light flaky pastry crust the the filling was sumptious and light, accompanied by salted fries and gravy. The mains started at around £15 and upwards, good value for money. I believe this restaurant and hotel was rescued by the local community. They have done a great job. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

We booked twice on our recent holiday as we were staying close by. Not much too look at from the outside, but do not let this put you off. Inside the decor is clean & bright & cosy. Very nice staff, well run, was very busy both nights (with a mix of locals/ holidayers) giving a nice atmosphere to it. Great quality food, really excellent, lamb & roast beef were outstanding, so was the chocolate fondant pudding! Deserving your support, just need to book ahead - closed Monday/ Tuesday from memory.

What a find on our holiday to the area from Scotland! This was our 3rd visit to the area and had driven past this several times not realising it was there. There was scaffolding at one end of the building and a boarded up window above the entrance so you'd be forgiven for thinking its closed but we are so glad we discovered it and will definitely be back next year. Parking was plentiful and easy too. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, including our son in the conversation , which really makes them stand out from other places we have eaten. The restaurant was fairly quiet when we arrived for our 6 o'clock booking but by 7/7.15 most of the tables were full but not spoiling the atmosphere. The food was excellent and the portions were huge!!! I highly recommend the deep fried brie starter and the haddock and Welsh beef burgers and even the way they cook the chips was amazing. the puddings did not disappoint either. overall value was 5*. we noticed the enormous beer garden when we left and hopefully we can return next year on a nice summer's day and use this as it looked like an amazing spot. hopefully they will have raspberry gin by then 😜

We dined early at 6pm & were briefly the only ones there so had time to look around. Restaurant was light & airy & tastefully decorated with full water jugs on every table...a bonus as this area of Wales has the best tap water I've ever tasted. Nice to see it without having to ask for water. Tables also had pretty fresh roses. So lets get the bad bit out of the way. We both had Welsh rarebit starters @ £7 each. The portions were tiny! Taste was ok but not great and literally 4 bites on very hard crusted bread. £4 would have been acceptable for the amount! Mains were absolutely delicious and large portions...I couldn't finish mine and helped ease the pain of the starters. G&T's lovely with lemon & lime, ice & straws. Nice outdoor area for smokers/ chilling in the sun. Staff were nice & friendly. 2 starters 2 mains 2 gins 2 beers & tips £68. So for £34 each had lovely food, fab drinks, sat outside in the sun. Had a truly ovely couple of hours and will definitely go again.

We were staying locally and decided to book a Sunday lunch. It was lovely hot tasty food and nice quiet corner of the pub. I had the vegetarian option and as I didn’t fancy what was on the menu they made me a puff pastry pie which I had with the roasted veg and my own jug of gravy. My daughter had the beef and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a good price too.

This is a very welcoming, community owned pub restaurant set in the heart of the village. The back story is brilliant and you can feel the community spirit as soon as you walk in the door. Lots of locals having a drink and eating the tasty food. We were staying in the village for a week and ate dinner here on two occasions. Strongly recommend this village gem.

Great pub serving lovely food. Mixture of locals and tourists made a lovely atmosphere and dog friendly which is a bonus for us. Food was tasty and a special mention to the chips which were a great accompaniment to the burger I choose, which is itself was juicy and tasty.

We could not have been made more welcome which was needed given we had messed up on a hotel and thus, dinner booking amd were hungry and tired. Large party for Easter Sunday meal for a big birthday. We all had a wonderful time. Nothing too much trouble, staff really helpful and considerate. Dogs and kids welcomed and enjoyed playing outside by the river. Food really delicious, excellent service. Can't wait to return. Next time we stay at plas talgarth we'll be straight back!

A friendly local pub and a cooperative bought in to by the locals - whats not to love. Great atmosphere and amazing lamb for dinner. I only wish I was staying longer to try more of the menu.

We booked The Riverside for a funeral tea after the funeral of one of our family. Always a difficult call as never quite sure about numbers. The staff were extremely understanding, flexible and efficient. They adjusted the food provided to cater for all present. The food was of an extremely high standard. We will be returning in hopefully happier circumstances. Thank you for providing a friendly and comforting environment at the end of a difficult day.

Both had wonderful Sunday lunches, and agree they were amongst the best we’ve ever eaten out. Unusually for us we had a starter, the homemade soup which was delicious. Then on to the main event - plenty of meat (one beef, one lamb) veg and gravy all cooked to perfection. Both at bursting point, we still couldn’t refuse puddings - again, homemade and delicious. Staff were very attentive and overall good value for money. Will certainly be back.

We ate at Glan yr Afon a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. It was just as good as last time - the food was beautifully cooked and the service was friendly from the more experienced members of staff. All in all a really nice evening.

Located off the A493 in Pennal , the Riverside restaurant is an attractive venue with a pleasant ambience. Parking is available on the site.The restaurant is cosy, very popular and booking is advisable. Our hosts recommended this venue for an evening meal, and it turned out to be the best meat dish I've had anywhere. Described as Welsh Lamb Steak, it was large, cooked to perfection accompanied with vegetables and chips which I chose rather than those for this dish shown on the menu. A truly superb meal. Highly recommended.

We both enjoyed a lamb steak. We were offered pink as is usual. Mine was perfect. My partner asked for a medium well done one. No concern. Served exactly as ordered. Well done to this super restaurant, manned by a super and engaging team of servers.

We ate here for the last night of our holiday. The restaurant is a nicely decorated pub and restaurant and had a good looking menu. We ordered nachos to start and sea bass for mains. The nachos weren't great and the seabass was extremely salty. I can't remember the last thing I sent back eating out but it was so salty that I couldn't eat it. This was a shame because with less salt it would have been a tasty meal. The waitress told us it was just the samphire used, however it was the large amount of sea salt flakes used on the potatoes and fish. They offered to make another dinner each and then didn't use any salt at all. They also didn't put any of the butter sauce on the replacement and so it was very bland and just fish and vegetables. We felt quite uncomfortable after the conversation and didn't stay very long after. It was a shame being the last night of our holiday.

We stay here every year now at the same time the night before the Cambrian Sportive . The staff are fantastic , service is faultless .The food always great , the menus have plenty choice and the rooms are beautifully appointed.If ever in this area I would never stay anywhere else - this is the real deal Thank you to all the team , you should be very proud Andy and Paul

Visited after checking opening times here. It is actually closed during Mo/Tues in September.This is contrary to what they say on this site. Also could not find any mention of it on their actual website.Please update your marketing channels with correct and up to date opening times.
