Gilvic in Hackney

WOW what a find down a steep staircase to gastronomy heaven. This small neighbourhood restaurant is big on innovative tastes. Everything I tried on the menu was spectacular but the mackerel smoked salmon and liver parfait were outstanding. And you have to try their take on cheesecake with strawberries- heavenly. Highly recommend

It was an experience eating at Gilvic. A very positive one. The food was so delicious and creatively plated. The setup inside was cosy and warm. The Chef and staff were very friendly.

The atmosphere was intimate, with only one waiter plus the owner and cook Guillaume, ready to answer any of our culinary questions. The quality was stellar. We had a small cheese platter, while sharing a bottle of the first white wine from the list - a Picpoul de Pinet - which went well with the cheese. I had a rumsteak that was simple but both tender on the inside and slightly crispy on a thin outside layer, its flavour was enhanced by a black trumpet mushroom sauce that gave it a unique and refined taste. For dessert, the fondant was warm, had the perfect melty texture without breaking onto a puddle of chocolate, and the chocolate taste was strong, which I love. Best French restaurant that I have experienced in London yet.

I was surprised to see only 3 reviews for Gilvic so I am adding one. I noted this place when using the Steam Room upstairs and as I am touring the diner clubs and other special eating places in Haggerston/Hoxton where I live, I tried this one and was very pleased I did. Chef Guillaume is a fellow countryman and a top chef. The space is original and welcoming. The food and choice are excellent. The music could be less funky but it is a matter of taste.

What a fabulous evening from start to finish! I was very fortunate to have my 60th birthday dinner celebrations at Gilvic, organised by my dear wife. As always, the food was sublime; with subtle flavours, beautiful and original presentation and great attention to detail. Chef Guillaume together with his wife Maja and the team do an incredible job. Gilvic is a true gem, and they deserve nothing but praise for high quality food and super hospitality. My family and our friends had a wonderful evening, and we would not hesitate recommending Gilvic to others wishing to experience a memorable culinary treat!
