Gigi Gao's Favourite Authentic Chinese in Swansea

Disappointed Return Visit I first reviewed this place seven years ago and, unfortunately, my recent return was a let-down. Food: The food is passable but overpriced. In a city like Swansea, which now has a growing number of excellent, authentic Chinese restaurants, this one doesn't stand out. The lack of Chinese clientele is telling. £6 for a single mug of green tea is absurd—especially when most authentic Chinese establishments offer unlimited tea as a standard, palate-cleansing courtesy. While they do offer a wider range of vegetarian options than many Chinese restaurants, that edge has dulled over time. There are now better vegetarian choices in the city, offering more flavour and better value. Ambiance: If you're after a showy, stereotypical setting, you'll likely enjoy it. The entrance is plastered with adverts and reviews, suggesting it's pitched more as an attraction than a serious dining experience. Think of it like a theme park—if that’s your thing, you’ll get what you came for. Personally, I found it cringeworthy. Service: Service was slow and unprofessional given the price point. For the money, there are other places in Swansea offering more attentive service and a more relaxed, genuine atmosphere.

Absolutely fantastic time here today celebrating my mother's birthday. From the moment you walk through the door the ambiance is beautiful. Everything was first class, the staff, the food - the best Chinese food I have ever tasted. Huge thanks to all the staff for a truly magical couple of hours - we all can't wait to come back. The menu is divine !

I’ve visited Gigi’s a few times in the last few years. Usually I just order and not really look at the prices, but this time we saw garlic broccoli which I would class as a side, priced at £11.88! We worked out for the two of us to have a main, noodles/rice., veg sides, spring rolls, other appetisers and a drink would be close to £100. We would usually spend about £40/50 in other Chinese restaurants. While I will say the food and atmosphere is lovely, after seeing the prices this time, I couldn’t justify it and we chose to leave.

Whoever issued your awards, I can only assume you paid them. I have been here twice (the second time, I revisited as it was for someone's birthday). Both times I found the food to be bland, as did my co-diners. Then there is the insulting service charge, that is slapped on your bill without warning ('voluntary' you may say and yet, you pray the customer is too timid to complain). What's more is your reception of negative feedback is equally appalling. Your replies seem so hollow and fake. Nobody is believing you remember each and every customer interaction the way you claim to.

Food was dreadful. Atmosphere was party like and service was polite. Set meal for 2 was £36 per head. So with two beers (330ml) and 10% service charge it came to £95. Thoroughly had our pants down. The 10% was added to our bill without our knowledge. I would have given a 10% tip anyway as the service was good. Also my beer came out ready poured and was as flat as a pancake. I’m not sure it was fresh. I’ve been drinking long enough to know a good beer from a stale one. Authentic? Never. Quality? Missing.

Gigi's is an authentic Chinese restaurant that provides what I feel is extremely tasty Chinese food. There is a large variety on the menu, different types of dishes, various meats and plenty of options you don't see in a takeaway. The big difference is that the food is fantastic, not greasy or oily but made right. The decor is very different but honestly it's great, gives it a British perspective of an oriental theme and it works well. The best part is Gigi herself who makes every effort with every customer to ensure fair prices and a positive dining experience. I wish I could rate this higher as it's thoroughly deserved. Everyone who I've recommended to eat here has never had a bad word to say about the restaurant, service or food Try it and see why it's so good.

Simply the best Chinese meal we've eaten in the UK. The aubergines were to die for. To see teenage boys who don't like greens tuck into seaweed! We we were made to feel very special. Thanks Gigi.

Went in early but soon filled up. Allowed to change our meal time before a show. Service was excellent and food was delicious, even had a goody bag at the end. Vegan menu is outstanding.

Went for a meal last night - keen based on the reviews - only 2 of us Restaurant is very cold and we asked for seats in the warm area so had a heater above our heads - other people in the restaurant ate their food with their coats on. Initially only two serving so service was slow and it was difficult to get their attention. Ribs and prawn toast very nice, seaweed quite salty so we didn't finish it. Lemon chicken good flavour but presentation poor (wish I'd taken a photo ) . salt and pepper king prawns nice , egg fried rice fine. Had 4 bottles of cider Seemed expensive at £104.00 Can't wait for usual restaurant to reopen when staff return from china - disappointed on most fronts

Visited here for the first time yesterday. The food was beautiful, very friendly staff and we really enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant. A bonus is that they off a gluten free menu. We will be returning 😊

The staff at Gigi Gao's are absolutely lovely. Very accomodating with baby feeds and the decor in the restaurant is so beautiful. The food is nice but i'd say the same as any other chinese restaurant. Quite expensive for what it is but good portions. One thing my family were disappointed with was the lack of baby changing facilities. I had to change my 7 month old on a chair in the corner of the restaurant which wasnt nice for anyone around trying to eat nor safe with my child trying to roll off the chair. If this changed I'd definitely recommend!

We had an amazing time out for New Year lunch! The set menu was lovely, we tried dishes we wouldn’t have normally ordered. One of our favourite parts was seeing the lion dance. Really special afternoon out. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Made us feel so at home. The decor inside is spectacular. There must be hundreds of pandas inside! We will definitely be back to visit again. Thank you for making our first trip special. We hung our lucky money bag up at home ❤️

Thank you very much. The food was amazing and the staff were so friendly, chatty and helpful. We had requested some extra space as my partner was on crutches, and were duly accomodated and were served very quickly. It was a little pricey but we knew this would be the case and have no complaints about it. I would have liked to have seen staff come round a little more often as we weren't able to order a second drink until the very end of the meal but appreciate that it was a quiet time and they didn't want to look as though they were hovering around the diners. Overall though, a lovely meal, nice atmosphere and we'll definitely be back

Big place to dine but very very cold in there unfortunately, plus the food was very over priced even tho it was very tasty, also a service charge was added & that should be made aware of when the bill arrives .

I've been to Gigi Gao's Favourite Authentic Chinese many times (over 30 times), both for work lunches and Christmas meals, and with family and extended family. The food and the service had always been excellent, and Gigi herself is kind hearted and always makes you feel welcome. The restaurant is covered in decorations and pandas, giving it a cosy and festive feel, no matter what the weather outside. When it is nice outside, there is a tree covered courtyard with hanging lanterns and potted plants. My favourite dish, cumin beef, is alas no longer on the menu, but hot and spicy lamb, griddle chicken, crispy pork are all delicious, and the garlic broccoli is cooked to perfection every time. Although I'm not a veggie, many friends and family are, and as Gigi's has a full vegan menu they always thoroughly enjoy it.

It was a lovely meal but on the pricey side, the staff were very friendly, but we will probably won't go again. Couldn't fault the service but we think maybe not upmarket enough for what we paid. Very cold, there were heaters but really not sufficient enough for the size of the room.

Just returned from having a lovely meal but had to leave early because it was so cold. After our starter we asked to be moved but were still cold at the new table. The couple at the next table also complained of the cold. It is a lovely restaurant and the food was good but at the price charged expect to be warm.

Very expensive! Food was good not great. Enjoyed the ribs but the crispy chicken was very average. The service charge that they sneak into the bill leaves a bad taste in the mouth. They know that most people won’t expect/see the extra charge so they try to scam a few more pounds out of their customers. Will this charge be refunded if I come back with the receipt?

3 star but I want to first say the staff were really nice. Reasons why though, it was really cold there, soon as we had our meals a lot of us put our coats straight back on. It also didn't seem very busy when we first arrived but took ages for someone to take our order, food actually came fairly quickly which was good. It then took absolutely ages for them to clear the table and take our bill, in the end we just had someone go up and sort it. We then found a £30 service charge on the bill! There were 8 of us but thought it was quite cheeky to add that much, thats enough almost for another person. The prices were on the expensive side which you kind of expect going in, but when you're charging that much the overall standard needs to match it. I tried to save some money ordering a glass of water, they brought a bottle out which turned out to be £5 which I thought was crazy, and the glass was dirty too, literally ending up drinking from the bottle instead. All that aside, it was an interesting experience eating there, and the food was stunning, the chefs did an incredible job. I had peanuts in mine which really added an interesting taste to it, i liked it! But as mentioned, the overall price did not match the experience we had.

Over £75 not even in china town London is it that expensive for a set menus for two literally 2 starter plates looked liked the prawn toast and spring rolls where pre pre frozen and tiny. Mains 3 average dishes and a tiny bowl of rice for two people. A soda water is almost £5 hose red tiny glass was almost £7!!! Bill for two people over £100!! Don't just order look carefully at the prices. Felt absolutely robbed. £100!! You are without doubt taking advantage of your customers, by pretending it has to do with the rise in the cost of living or inflation. I dislike greedy people who are so quick to take full advantage of a situation. After looking through your reviews, I found it very strange that they are mostly 5 star or 1 star. This makes me think most of the 5-star reviews to be fake, with the 1-star reviews being actually honest reviews. You have gone to a lot of trouble to defend your practices. This for me exposes your second agender of putting profits first before customer satisfaction. You say "Jay Rayner raves about 'fabulours creations' and 'thrilling' dishes at Welsh Chinese reataurant" (Quoted with the spelling mistakes included). Often the food presented to a well know food critic is far superior to that served to the general public. One part of our starter was belly pork or some other animal fat covered in bread crumbs then deep fried. As I have said the true and honest reviews are usually the 1 stars reviews. I stand by my honest review.

Yesterday was my second time visiting Gigi’s so we tried some new things from the menu which did not disappoint! We went to Gigi Gao’s for my son’s 11th birthday and had a great time. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and went to extra effort to make my son’s birthday meal special. They even gave us some Chinese lanterns to take with us. Will definitely be coming back next time we’re in Swansea!

Stopped here this afternoon on the off chance we could get a table as I’m useless and never book anything they were very accommodating and sat us at a beautiful table over looking the marina the decor was crazy Chinese and I loved it the food was just something else best calamari I’ve ever eaten little pricey but definetly worth the money even got a little gift at the end of our meal which I thought was a nice touch will definetly be returning thank you Gigi

Let's start from scratch. Wen ordering food prices are extremely high and very poor quality food (horrible) Not much taste at all ( super dry ) over fried pork bits with NO pork inside at all , just a crisp coat without meat at on the plate. I bite every single bite as it was and didn't managed to feal any meat or taste, no juicy, just completely coat over fried and super dry, my partner toffu looked like been fried on the morning and reheated on the microwaves on the end of the day, I was so frustrated with food standards, on the desert fried banana with icecream basically the banana was under fried (soft coat) so the plates that require crispy came undercooked and the plates that you can't over fry came super hard dry with no taste or flavor, just fully of oils Please do not attempt to go to eat on this restaurant as you will be disappointed. On the final wen went to pay for it they come for 2 dishes 1 ball of rice a tea a beer and a desert with 63€ bill to pay and another 6£ to serve food to the table ( that was optional ) hidden on final bill by total ending with 71£ . I could had a steak or eat anywhere a decent and healthy meal for less than half I've spent. I feel sick of this crispy oily and untasty. It's a shame but I will warn everyone. Do Not eat anything there (not even given for free) because it's really BAD. You will regret !!! 0 STARS

Got totally ripped off by this restaurant..my wife and I had a set meal for two one bottle off tiger beer(£8!!!!!) and a glass of coke...total bill came to £102!!!!..food not much better than my local Chinese and and equivalent meal is just £27 ...don't bother eating here.

Food was nice, standard chinese, staff were attentive. I went with my partner and we ordered a set meal, when the bill came they had charged us twice for the set meal because its “per person” yet the portion size didnt change. Very disappointed to have paid £53 for 1x kung po chicken, 1x sweet n sour pork (5 peices) and a small bowl of egg fried rice. Its a very sneaky and deceptive way of pricing and i would be very careful what you order if you don’t want to be surprised by an extortionate bill. Gigi you need to do better, very unfair

A fun place but expensive for what it is. The restaurant is very colourfully decorated with a big focus on the founder, Gigi, and their past accomplishments. The food was tasty but some of the prices were crazy - I paid £7 for a tiny mug of Jasmine tea, which also leaked! My tofu dish was cold around the edges which was a little off putting - but it did taste nice. The waiters were friendly and I can see the appeal of the place, but to me it felt like we were paying for the spectacle of the restaurant, rather than good food.

Very over the top decor in this restaurant. Some might like it maybe? I found it quite tacky. Pull over chair covers a good idea, but surely the point of them is that they can be cleaned easily and in fact they were ill fitting and dirty anyway. Staff were friendly, but actually quite inattentive once food was delivered...more interested in chatting to each other. This may have been because we went in late afternoon...after lunchtime and before dinnertime. There were a couple of other tables who came in soon after us though. Food arrived seemingly too quickly after being ordered....giving the impression it was all just cooked earlier and reheated. Salt and pepper potatoes were very greasy and over cooked. Chicken satay was nice but not very peanut saucy, chicken fried rice was nice. It was an ok experience. Maybe the hype outside about the best in Wales, multi award winning etc raised expectations too high beforehand?

We were a party of 5 celebrating a birthday and had a great time. Delicious food and a huge thank you to Iona who made our evening even better. She was chatty, friendly, informative with a continual smile. She realised we were celebrating a birthday and arranged a surprise rendition of "Happy Birthday" & a candle on a rabbit bao bun. We had great fun. I've docked one point for the steep wheelchair ramp which I thought was going to tip my son out of his motorised wheelchair. I recently visited the Chinese restaurant in Swansea for a weekend getaway with my friend, and we had an incredible dining experience. We ordered the Special Fried Rice, Hot and Spicy Lamb, Duck Meat, and Chinese Noodles. While the Tofu dish was a bit too oily for our taste, everything else was absolutely delicious. The Special Fried Rice and Hot and Spicy Lamb, recommended by our server, were particularly outstanding. The ambience of the restaurant made us feel like we had stepped into Chinatown, with plenty of authentic Chinese decorations. The view of the boat dock added to the charm of the place. Our server was very attentive, giving us a great seat upon arrival and offering excellent recommendations. As a delightful surprise, we received a gift after our meal, which added a special touch to our visit. Overall, it is an awesome place with delicious food and a wonderful atmosphere. Highly recommended!

We were on a visit from England to Wales to visit family and what a treat to find an authentic Chinese restaurant! The food and service was superb, we weren't sure what to order from such an extensive menu and the staff listened to what we liked and recommended dishes which really hit the spot! My partner was still raving about the Ribs the next day lol. Thoroughly recommend

Went here for a pre-graduation meal celebration, I don’t think the restaurant was ready for so many people on a Tuesday night. The lady serving us was awesome so helpful the food was great and very reasonably priced. Will definitely return here.

Be aware of the misinformation available on their website which states the restaurant closes at 10 PM. Went there earlier today at 9:40 PM. The host declared that the chef had already left and the restaurant was closed. Is there no regulatory authority here in Swansea, which should monitor and regulate such restaurants, which cause huge inconvenience to customers ?

Sweet and sour pork rib was not good at all, but the squid and rice noodles were fine. Great decorations but overpriced for mediocre food and service. Don't order the sweet and sour pork ribs, but the fried rice noodles and dry-cooked squid were still very good.

Are you after some chinese on Saturday evening in Swansea? Better look elsewhere than this place. The food we were served was horrible (unless you are a fan of everything being drowned in soy sauce), beer was warm (then, who knows? It might be your thing). At the end you'll be given some gifts (straight from the heart) made of some cheap plastic items which eventually end up in oceans... But hey... Who cares about turtles and other marine life...

If in Swansea a visit here is essential. Especially if you are a fan of authentic Chinese cuisine. I booked well ahead of my visit having read an article by food critic Jay Raynor. It didn't disappoint ! The food and range of dishes was excellent plus the totally kitch and crazy atmosphere and decor was mesmerising . Served by exotic looking and extremely polite staff and Miss Gigi herself was a charming hostess. Thank you for an unforgettable experience.

A proper dining experience. The menu is full of interesting and uncommon dishes which seem to be well liked. The food is wonderfully fresh and delicious. It’s the sort of venue that is ideal for a few people to sit together and work through a selection of dishes. When you are seated alongside a framed rave review by Jay Rayner you have high expectations. We were not disappointed.

Ate here Sunday night with high expectations due to the positive reviews and awards. Food was good, some dishes fantastic, others not for my taste. However, I was very unwell that night and spent Monday in bed and was recovering gently Tuesday. After an honest review the owner threatens reporting the honest review to the police, which is very disappointing. I would like to think reausturants would gladly accept feedback and ensure everything is correct for future customers.

Very disappointed with the service at this establishment- it seems like I’m not the first either. After looking at their website, we decided to place an order for collection. The website is very poor and does not seem to work properly. Due to the complications, we decided to phone through our order. Once we arrived to collect our order, we were shocked to find out that due to us ordering on the phone, instead of online, each dish was £3 extra! I don’t know how on earth they can charge £3 extra for EACH dish because we ordered over the phone. The lady on the phone did not seem bothered with our concern and basically said, “This is how we do it here.” I’ve never been to anywhere in my life which does this. Let alone £3 extra per dish. As we ordered on the phone, the meal cost us approximately an extra £15! Unbelievable! I will not be eating here again and I will be informing everybody I know about this. Whatever you do- don’t phone up to place an order!!

Lovely place, on the waterfront and very decorative. Staff very pleasant and attentive. Food was OK at best. Expensive Unfortunately, after our visit Sunday, we all felt unwell after, my wife spent 48 hours in bed and back an forth to the toilet with food poisoning. Won't be returning.

Typical Chinese restaurant,Located in Swansea , but not pocket friendly compared to other restaurants in Swansea. Nice ambience with outdoor space to sit and eat. Went inside for dining. Decor was typical colourful with crowdy teddies and colour hangings. Must try and recommended dish is Lazy king prawns, ordered it twice. And seafood noodles was yummy. Soy sauce was freely available on tables, but surprisingly printed ingredient had alcohol 😳 in soya sauce, later attending staff clarified it doesn’t contain alcohol. Asked twice for tomato sauce , every time they served ketchup in a small plate. Expected nice soup but soup was not upto the mark. Sweet corn soup was with extra added sugar it seemed. Egg fried rice was very small in portion and bland taste , not recommended. Dry Dumplings were superb but not that much in quantity. Quick service and nice staff. Nice lively background music , not too loud. Free fortune cookies and pouches at the end . Asked for a table for bay view , but got a reply from as reserved but nobody came for 3 hours in that table surprisingly.

This authentic Chinese restaurant, almost perfectly captures the atmosphere they were aiming for. The food was excellent with a wide range of food with lots of variety, service was great and we never had to leave our seats the whole time, table service was fantastic. In the end, we received a welcoming and warming gift bag, full with fortune cookies and loads of presents and accessories. Inside the tables and chairs were wonderful, while the bathrooms are also spectacular, creating an elegant look and a friendly environment. Props to the owners and employees for supporting the experience and making the visit a whole lot better.

This is my new favourite Chinese restaurant, the best Chinese we've had! The food was beautifully flavoured, and different to your run of the mill 'English' Chinese cuisine. The staff were super friendly and polite. It is clear a lot of effort has gone into making the restaurant look fun and filled with things we would associate with China. We can't wait to return.

The moment you walk in is an experience, the staff are so welcoming and friendly and the food is delectable! It was a lovely authentic experience with a beautiful waterside view. We met Gigi and she took the time to welcome us and made us feel at home. It was a lovely experience we can't wait to come back.

What a beautiful meal. Second to none in the Swansea area. Yes it can be a little crazy in there BUT the food is outstanding 👌🏻

I've visited Gigi Gao's twice and both times it's been a really wonderful experience. Really tasty food with a fantastic range of vegan options (a whole menu book, full of vegan dishes) The decor is so beautiful and I could spend ages enjoying all the details they have displayed in the restaurant. The service is great too! I look forward to visiting again.
