A little expensive but the food was very good and the staff are friendly, a big improvement on the previous owners.

Staff was rude and had a terrible attitude, making us feel like idiots. She then couldn't get the order right and didn't listen to anything we said. Decent food, bit on the steep side but would be worth it if the staff didn't treat you like dirt on a shoe.

Really delicious fresh food, plenty of choices to go with the chips, lovely staff. Can’t beat this chippy in my opinion. 5 stars all the way.

I've just been to this chippy, and literally walked straight back out, because the blonde woman behind the counter kept wiping her mouth and scratching her head. Disgusting in my opinion, especially when she's dealing with food

Just been to the chippy .got home and missing a portion of chips phones up and spoke to the Italian fella omg he's the most rudest of people what do u want me to do .and we are a new business .... seriously if u didn't serve about 3 poleople at once and serve 1at a time like it use to be we wouldn't of been a shortage ..... he said ask for the missing chips when u come again ....... Rude 🤔

Ordered a Donna kebab with salad. The wrap was hard and the meat was not hot and the smallest amount of meat for £7.30 is mad

Food has improved greatly since new management. The staff are lovely and very attentive.

I’ve got to say this is now my favourite chippy, with the new improved menu and attentiveness of the staff, bigger portions especially the fish, just incredible, what a change. Spoke to the new owner, he said he’s got some more big ideas for this 50 year old business, Can’t wait to try them. Well done guys, I will definitely be a consistent customer. Good size large haddock, nice crispy, not too greasy batter but fish rather dry and quite pricey

Went Friday 5th food was good atmosphere was fine would go again

Really disappointed with my recent experience. Was always a big fan of this place, although only an occasional visitor. Ordered fish & chips twice and a hot curry sauce. Took over 25 minutes to receive order. Seemed as though they hadn't taken into account that Good Friday would be busy!! Fish was tough and rubbery, not flacky and falling apart as you'd expect. Chips were OK but the curry sauce had the consistency of Campbell's condensed soup when you first open the can! Won't be going back any time soon...... very poor from what was once the best chippy around! Note: Me and the Mrs have had the world fall out of us since eating it! Spent less time queing than I have in the toilet!

Hadn't been to Gaskells chippy in quite a few months as food wasn't good last time, I decided to give them another chance this week, I shouldn't have bothered, chips were all small hard bits, fish was extremely strong smelling and not very nice tasting,staff weren't very pleasant, I asked the guy who was cooking if I could have a large cod as it says preorder, all I got was a mumble from him, so much so the guy next to me looked at me and I said was that a yes, has he heard me, then we both started laughing as neither of us could tell, also what i didnt like was the guy cooking blanched some chips and put them to one side part cooked, ive not seen this done at any other chippy, Appears to be new staff or owner, it takes a few seconds to be polite to customers after all they are your livelihood, definitely won't be going back again and now looking at the reviews it appears other people won't be either. It takes a long time to build a good reputation but only a short time to lose it.

The fish and chips were terrible and through them away will not be going back

We have been going there for years . Looks like they had a new person frying fish and chips on Friday night. And it was horrible, chips are stale and undercooked, fish is overcooked, fish butter burnt to the point when fish curled . So you better bring experience chef back or teach new one how to cook it properly please otherwise you will be loosing customers,

Worsed chipy in wigan prices are extortionate not the best 11 quid for bag off chips chips and curry 2 sausage lol and they went in the bin wast off money robbing gets

Out of the 4 times I've been, only once was it nice. After the 3rd time I swore I'd never go again but had too risk it one evening due to a terrible meal out elsewhere so went with the hope that it would be like the one time it was really good... But instead... Scabby half chips, overly greasy, luke warm, definitely bottom of the barrel instead of just throwing them and making fresh. At nearly £9 for a portion of fish and chips I don't mind at all if the quality is good, but top price for very under quality is annoying. Seriously, don't bother!

Planned to visit family near the chippy and all have a chippy tea, checked the opening times for yesterday Saturday and was scheduled to open until 8pm arrived there 6.55pm with my grandson and other family members to find it closed. Not good enough the person in charge needs to get a grip and stop letting customers down or you won't have many left.

Never one to leave reviews but on this occasion I felt it necessary. I’ve had a career in fast food for over 30 years and I know how hard it is with a queue out the door, to keep your cool and put out good food for a few hours on end. Fair play to the guy who sorted my families tea out on Friday. I don’t know this shop well enough to know the staff by name but keep it up guys, we will be returning, we absolutely loved it thank you

The guy who was running the place tonight stopped me mid-sentence to say they had no large cod. Didn't ask me if I wanted something else and then left me waiting in the queue for two minutes and then said to his staff no more fish is in.I walked out. Very rude man who's got a face like a smacked bum. Never going here again.

We waited 25 minutes for awful fish and chips + a steak pie. Poor quality, terrible taste and overpriced compared to other nearby chip shops. Quite frankly, this is an impressive "achievement". We did the shop a favour by giving up a portion of our order to someone else, as it had been sold twice. The servers refunded the cost and offered us an item of food that would otherwise go to waste to make up for this but, incredibly, the manager overruled this and told them to bin the food instead! The 3 stars for service reflect the attempted 5 star service of servers and 1 star service of the manager (and the poor treatment of his own staff). Horrendous experience, I'd like a refund They'd rather throw food away than give it to someone who has done them a favour

Unfriendly staff who can barely look at you, never mind crack a smile. Tense atmosphere , young lad on ruined my fish and chips by dousing it in salt!! Gaskells used to be a friendly chippy, 😪

Large portion of chips smaller than the normal portion guy next to me was given. Surly service & unfriendly atmosphere. Definitely not value for money for the high prices they’re charging. Will think twice about going again as there are much better places in the area.

Can seem expensive upon first glance, but potion size and quality more than compensate, a plaice you will definitely go back too.

Stopped on the way back home. Couple large chips, battered sausage and curry sauces. Proper tasty food loved the battered sausage! Been back a few times now for them. Curry sauce is really good - seems similar in price to other local chippies tbh but these do good chips

Gaskells has a good reputation, as we were passing on our way home we used it instead of our usual 'friday chippy tea' evening meal, just for a change. I have to say it was ordinary to say the least, my fish was horribly greasy the chips were full of scraps, it was also far more expensive than our usual shop and not a patch on quality. Very disappointed to say the least.

Possibly the best fish and chips in the North West.

Turned up at 430,no food fish will be at least 20 minutes chips around the same, some staff was only just turned up and was told they only put the fryers on around 5 minutes before and have to wait for them to warm up. Most the people behind me walked way when they heard the waiting time.

Updated and down rated...I have been calling here for a straight four weekends. First week superb...second not as special...third average. Tonight 30th Oct 2021....the worst ever. Fish destroyed dry and tiny (microscopic)...chips hard and bland .. Consistent quality is paramount...sadly Gaskell's don't have it. Take your chance because Wigan really has not one stand out chippy...You might be lucky...then you might not...I however will not be returning.

There was only a few people in the queue but it took about 45 Min to get served. Absolutely unbelievable wait. No fish ready no chips ready - staff who really couldn't care less and then kept serving their croneys through the back door. Very disappointed, we used to go here all the time but time for a change.

Excellent chips as normal. Bit stingey on the amount tonight. Usually a good portion... And 5 stars.

The anticipation of eating fish and chips has long been associated with disappointment for me, due to Gaskell's being my childhood chip shop. I don't think I've ever had anything better than ok from here.

No other English chippy is worthy. This place has the finest Fish, chips & curry you could imagine! The only English chippy worth considering if your in the area 👍 If you are not in the area, its well worth the travel!

Can't beat fish and chips! They're friendly and the fish is always really good, white, flaky with crispy batter. The portions of chips are huge too.

The fish was the tastiest i have had from a chippy.

Go there now and again can be alright/quite good quality. Portions are small - that's just the owners/management being greedy and getting away with it with most people. Have had rubbish at odd times but overall above average quality food but small portions are rubbish for the amount you get - perhaps they're being naive about them aswell. They might fill a baby but that's about it.

Excellent service would well recommend the fish shop to anyone, sophie and Tom are providing a fabulous service to me and the public, have been a regular customer now for 2/3 years all the staff do a good job, good service,,at a fare price. What else can you ask for in a service.

My experience was wonderful, Both myself and the wife had fish and chips and the children had sausage and chips. Nice to see a real English chippy flourishing. The size of the servings where excellent, staff as helpful as you need them to be. portion sizes seem to be dwindling whilst the price goes up. Chips can be good one day but bad the next time, depends on who's cooking i guess. Used to love come here.
