Ordered the family meal but ended up with loads of extra chips. Far too many chips.

So disappointed with food. Ordered Chicken Maryland and the staff clearly didn’t time the cooking of the different elements correctly. Majority of food was clearly ready at least 7 minutes before final bit and kept warm, which left chips soggy. No communication to me or apologies on the delay of the food and I do appreciate they were busy but I clearly heard one member of staff say she had elements of the meal ready and then the long wait. Batter was overdone on chicken portion, peas were tasteless, I won’t be returning.

Clean and tidy place and the battered sausage was okay but that’s about it for the positives. Chips were dry, I might as well have had oven chips, and the portions are small for the price. Atmosphere of the place is off and the cooks and server had no customer service.

Gareths was clean and tidy however I had to explain my order several times on the phone when I asked a question the lady didn't know portions were abit lightand for the price after collecting our order burger s were missing and by the time they were given the rest of our food was cold

They always forget something did it once again tonight and there trying say they aren’t sending out two dips that the variety boxes come with so food was not enjoyable wouldn’t even let me send the food back hung up the phone as well on me while shouting at me absolutely disgraceful

The staff are so ignorant, would it hurt to.say hello/please/thank you. Treat the customers bad they won't be back. Food ok. Found a total of 9 bones in my fish which ruined my meal. Onion rings awful, all batter and no onions

Telephone wasn’t picking up, went in and placed a group order, most of the food was good but rather expensive. I think the biggest disappointment was the fish “supper” - £14 for a large fish and a poor amount of chips (see image)

Stayed at Northcoast and decided to try. Placed a telephone order and sent husband to collect. Discovered half our £60 order was missing when we arrived back at our accommodation in Portrush. The fish supper consisted of one piece of fish and 6 chips absolutely disgraceful. Order thrown together, never had worse. Weren't interested. Never be back. Terrible service

I wish I had read the reviews before visiting!! Ordered a Fish Supper and Onion Rings - £16! Waited around 20 minutes for it and granted they seemed very busy. Was it worth the wait? NO.... Ive given a 2 rating because the fish was ok, not great quality fish but a reasonable size although not that warm - the Onions rings were greasy to the point of being inedible! The chips were stone cold and hard as rocks!! They went in the bin along with the onion rings AVOID!! My first ever visit and I will never be back - dont make the same mistake!

Rarely review unless P1ss Poor. Asked for 1/4lb cheeseburger got thinest steakburger I have even seen. Soggy greasy little piece of fish stuck to greaseproof paper while trying to lift out, bones and all. Won’t be back.

Honestly food is hit and miss. Ordered just eat, the chips were soggy and horrible. The 2 bags of chips went to the bin. The rest was fine. Just a waste of nearly £8 on chips. Pity that if a part of a meal wasn't good you couldn't get it refunded. I order out because I don't want to cook once in a while. But end up just wasting money because of poor quality.

I never usually write reviews but this was just not it. Me and my friend were a bit hungry so we decided to dine in Gareth's. Immediately we go in and a man takes our orders and everything is fine. We take our seats and wait for a bit. About 10 minutes later my order is ready, it was a simple kids meal since the other protions are too big for me. I tell my friend to ask for salt and ketchup when her's is ready since I'd realised it had no salt. They call her order and she goes to pick it up. I overhear her asking for salt and the woman with quite serious attitude says "it's already salted." We aren't surprised since we've been here a couple of times and know that their customer service isn't good. There was a couple sitting Infront of us that had just received they're order and the man had gone to ask for salt. The man walks past with around 3 packets of salt in his hand. Not to mention the service was way nicer to them than they were to us even though we hadn't done anything. Food was greasy and tasteless. Better to go get a frozen meal from the spar beside than waste your money on this.

I was passing through Portstewart yesterday and I happened to see this place. First of all the warning signs were there, a gentlemen coming back in with his order. Secondly whilst ordering the young fella behind the til had a very bad attitude taking the order, needs a lesson on customer service! Thirdly the chicken burger was very bad more like battered chicken crumbs, very small portion of chips albeit for £8.55. In my opinion one of the worst chippies I have been to. Would recommend avoiding this place.

Never write reviews, but due to the standard of food I was served this evening, I feel obliged. Chips were hard and greasy. Ordered zinger burgers, got plain ones. Burger bap was burned, along with the greasy batter on burger. Everything greasy and overcooked. Most of the food went in the bin. Needless to say, won't be back.

Although there was a space at exactly the address the delivery girl had to phone us. Perhaps she didn’t have satnav and was apologetic. The presentation of the food wasn’t great even for a takeaway. My meal was lukewarm (only just). We paid for a bottle of Fanta and didn’t receive. I had invited friends over but was glad they hadn’t managed to come.

I went into this chippy tonight for a takeaway. I was greeted by a fella called Sam. He didnt look like he wanted anymore custom. When I ordered he had no customer skills at all. The look he gave me was awful as much as to say do u have to come in n order. It was after 9 oclock when we were passing through. Anyhow I ordered two meals n I could hear him say to the lady called Mary that cheeseburger is plain when I asked him was it my order he said yes and I replied the cheeseburger was to be fully dressed and have relish on it. I also ordered a chicken wrap he said what do u want on it and I said salad n he asked what dressing and I asked what dressing do u have n he just pointed to the wall. He wrapped the chip n literally threw it into the heater part to keep warm until the rest of the meals were made. After that he asked the lady working with him if she wanted any chips. The lady said no so he tipped them in the bin. We got our order and wasnt impressed by the burger. It had no relish on it. We also wernt impressed with the chips as the most of them were hard ends and yet this fella who cooked them had the cheek in front of me to ask the lady if she wanted any left over chips at our expense as the owner got £13.90 for this order. Needless to say we wont b back as this fella had no customer skills at all n the meal wasnt good either.

Ordered on just eat. 2 hours and several phonecalls later food arrived. Cold, grease everywhere and rock hard, had obviously been sitting for ages. Took food back as could not eat and they were so rude, one staff member in particular. Too expensive to waste money on food that you cannot eat. Won't be back!

I have never in my life had 1. Worst food from a chippy 2. Had worse customer service from a chippy. Tonight I ordered a chicken burger meal for collection. Was told it would be 20 mins wait I arrived after 15 mins and was given my meal. I arrived home 5/10 mins later to open my meal. I received a plain burger with not one bit of dressing on it nothing! A plain burger in plain bap and freezing cold chips. I rang and complained straight away and said how I was so disappointed by this and expect a refund and new meal. They told me to bring back the meal which I did. I was greeted by a woman on the till who was nothing short of complete ignorance. Gave me my cash back and I asked where my replacement meal was and was told it ‘ our policy’ either money back or replacement food. Humiliated me in front of all the customers and ended up having no choice but to leave the shop without any sort of food replacement. Never in my life will I back here both food and customer service is horrendous wish I could give this place 0 stars.

Staff so rude and never smile, ignored other customers and didn’t answer the phone once. Food was disappointing, chicken goujons extremely greasy, fish over cooked with more batter than fish and small portions which was very over priced. Felt like they’d through the food together in about 10 minutes. Will not be back and do not recommend.

There are so many nice chip shops in Portstewart, PLEASE do not waste your time and money here where the mannerless staff fight amongst them and treat you like dirt for attempting to spend your money in the shop that pays their wages. I say ‘attempt’ because when I was last in today on New Year’s Day the staff wouldn’t actually take my very simple order of 2 chips as they were apparently ‘too busy’ (they really weren’t) which resulted in an argument between the staff about whether they would take the order or not. When I tried to ascertain the outcome of the argument and whether they actually would take my order, they just ignored me and started to shout out other orders so I left without food. The last time I was in a few months back, another mannerless staff member rudely told me I couldn’t pay by card, which turned out to be because she didn’t know how to work the machine….an argument then ensued between another staff member who called her out on refusing to take card payment and came to attend to it herself. I don’t think I’ve been in without there being an argument between staff. Arguments aside, if you actually manage to get any food, the staff will still treat you with contempt because their incompetence means they cannot cope with even simple tasks and results in very rude, ill mannered service. I will never be back and a one star review is too good for this place.

Ordered a delivery and it took over 2 hours to get it.when it came the food was cold and soggy just uneatable had to be thrown out.staff that send out food like this for human consumption should not have a job and I foned twice the staff are terrible.this place needs shut down.i just wasted £20 and had to throw it out.stay CLEAR of this dump!!

Great old fashioned chippy.Great service and menue.The fish are huge as is the fish bites, and breaded mushrooms are do die for. The best value is their variety box a great sample of their menue.

I called into Gareths Chip Shop,Portstewart Thurs 12.08.2021, I was the only customer in the shop, a female with glasses hollered at me "have you a telephone order"??? "No" I said, "well it'll be 20 to 25 minutes, cause we've just had a massive order" Astonished by the appalling attitude and totalling disgusting lack of proper and professional customer service, I simply turned around and walked out of the shop. I have experienced previous incidents of poor customer service, but last night was a whole new low lol My advice to that female employee behind the counter, perhaps you ought to just fry chips and let someone with better manners speak to potential customers I WONT BE BACK IN ANY GARETHS CHIP SHOP AGAIN

If there was a zero rating that is what I'd give. It is the worst chippy in Portstewart. I've had a few different things from here over the last few years to give them the benefit of doubt, but if anything the food get worse. The last thing I ordered was a Big Boy Burger. The meat was burnt black all around the edge and the whole thing was so dry I could hardly swallow it. Needless to say most of it went in the bin. Definitely NOT recommended.

Absolutely shocking to receive lasagne like this. After taking a bite before realising the state of it and being sick the rest of the nite. so took it back the next day and told nothing they could do.......staff response was disgusting and disappointing

Ate a salad bap outa it one Thursday. Shiting green glup for 4 days in hilltop caravan park public toilets. Least the toilets looked like they were just toilet ducked. Wasn't the man whom I was. Cheers Gareth. Lost 2 stone. #slimfast is nowt compared to #Garethfast # anusol(keep refrigerated. . Ps folks. Leaving them a 4 star review because 4 star rhymes with the sore star Gareths give me. Was sure a holiday I won't forget.

Terrible, slow and even rude service. Ordered via JustEat and got to shop at estimated pickup time. Came into shop and was ignored. Others came in and had their order taken before me. Other orders (placed whilst I was waiting) were filled before mine. Everytime I asked a different excuse given, clearly a lie. Fish given to other customers whilst I was being told they were cooking it. Waited more than 30 mins AFTER the pickup time, no apology offered.

This is a complete waste of money. Ordered a variety box, chips were soggy, onion rings falling apart with grease, chicken goujon burnt within an inch of its life, pepper sauce stone cold and just vile. Nothing about this place says traditional like they call themselves! Avoiding this place will be extremely easy. NEVER be back again

Rang to put an order in for collection. On ringing to order what I wanted, the “girl” on phone said they no longer do COD, so then it was “No we don’t do Beef Sausages” like “what”, what chippy doesn’t do Cod or Beef sausages? , so because they no longer do these 2 most popular items I had to think quick what else I could order, the “cheeky girl” on the end of the phone proceeded to tell me to hurry up and make up my mind as she had other orders to take!!!! What!!!!!!! I couldn’t believe my ears! Needless to say “I did not go collect my order”! The staff need a lesson on manners and it’s not the first time iv heard people say this! They seemly argue among other in front of customers etc.. If u don’t want to be disappointed, Stay clear!

What an absolute joke of a place.. Firstly got our order wrong (missing chips for the kids), so the other half rings them, told that delivery driver would bring them straight down.. After 55mins gets back on phone to find out what was going on.. Delivery driver decided to give them to another customer.. Total incompetence from both shop and delivery driver.

Ordered two large chips and they certainly were not large or even fresh. I would not recommend. Fish was nice though.

No Card Terminal to pay for food, instructed to use ATM outside, which was not working. Then asked to drive to Tesco ATM about a mile away, steer on past this place is my advice ⭐

I ordered a fish supper and single fish £13.30(a bit expensive I thought) and when I got it home I was extremely disappointed the chips were over cooked and all wee hard ends also the batter on the fish was over cooked and one large part of the fish was hard burnt batter. This is the second time I've had this experience here. I thought I would give them the benefit of doubt for the first time and try them again but unfortunately this time was as bad if not worse. I definitely won't be eating from here again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Very poor. Had a deal which was advertised on the shelf as being £3 for a sandwich and a drink. At the till my wife was told she had to pay for the drinks, a bottle of water and tin of Diet coke. Unfortunately she paid. Luckily we were just passing through and will not be back again!

Staff who don’t like customers coming into the shop and interrupting there banter. If they could cook food as well as they could talk it would be an amazing chippy. That said I wouldn’t fancy my chances in a bare knuckle fight with any of the three ladies working today.

Me and my boyfriend rang Gareth's around 8 and placed our order and the girl took it down. I then said to my boyfriend did she even ask for an address so we kept ringing to see if they got it and they said yes they did get our address and it'll be on its way. Half hour later we rang back saying we still haven't got our food, and they starting fighting with eachother in the kitchen then hung up. We rang back again on my boyfriend's phone and they wouldn't answer so I tried ringing in my phone to see if they were ignoring us and they were cos they answered me straight away. The girl then told me the delivery guy finished at half 9 and she couldn't do anything about it and there was no way they would let us order again. After arguing with her for a couple of minutes she then hung up again. Never got our food

Daughter and partner ordered food tonight at 8.15. Were told 40 min delivery time didn't arrive re rang and girls down phone where so rude. Said it was on way still never arrived. They just rang back see where order was again and girl was ignorant and hung up told them no food delivery driver left at half 9. Shocking

Overpriced burnt food cooked by someone(not a cook)who was more interested in what she was doing at the weekend whilst she cleaned the premises without any hand washes in between.Chips were cold and bean juice was all over the place which caused the bag to fall apart.Its time the owner got his finger out and showed this lot there p45!!

Called in on 12/8/20 around 9pm. What I seen behind the counter was a disgrace.Zero hygiene by all staff in between cooking (burnt food)and cleaning.Took over 30 mins for my order and when I returned home it was carried in bean juice from a leaking container....not to mention the swearing amongst the staff (if you could call them that) whilst young children were present. Won't be back!!!

This place does not even deserve a one star. Ordered a fish supper and binned it - batter was rotten, it seemed to have been fried and refried several times. It was so hard and absolutely tasteless. Fish was also rotten. The chips didn’t fair much better. Found staff unpleasant. This chippy used to be good but definitely gone down hill. Will not be back.

I have never experienced such shocking customer service! The woman who worked behind the counter in Portstewart would benefit from an anger management course and a lesson in common courtesy as she was clearly unable to control her temper. As a regular customer I will NEVER be back. Everyone is under pressure in the current climate and if you can't even pretend to be courteous to your customers then you will not last very long. Other customers present were just as surprised. The staff member might be better of out the back peeling potatoes.

Ordered kebabs, staff did not ask us if we wanted it on chips or bread so just ASSUMED we wanted it on bread. I would have been more satisfied if they asked, or when we came in gave us the option of getting it on Chips tho they did not portray this. Overall kebab was okay, I have tasted better. Chicken was very dry. Disappointing

Proper fish and chips. 9 times out of 10 it is great, crispy batter and great chips. I’ve never ventured into burgers from here, but for F&C it’s a go-to.

Brilliant portions and reasonable prices

Ordered a takeaway for delivery and the order we received was completely wrong, we understood that there can be confusion however where met with nothing but rudeness. The girl on the phone would not listen to what we wanted and proceeded to hand the phone over to her colleague and say “can somebody else handle this cause I can’t be arsed” we then proceeded to explain what we wanted and we were cut off again by the girl on the phone saying “they don’t even know what they want”. We completely understand that mistakes can be made however we were not expected to be met with such rudeness. Will not be ordering from this chip shop again

I ordered a chicken fillet burger meal and chicken goujons meal ,the batter on chicken was over done ,and chicken goujons meal had no garlic mayo dip as it was stated on menu so the meal was very dry the other meal was just okay .why do you put this on your menu and not send it out with meal, so half the meal was threw out because of this total waste of money.I have ordered here before and the same thing happened they forgot to send the 3 bottles water with meals ,I understand you are busy but check the meals have everything before sending out it's not that hard to do and when we tried ringing couldn't get an answer. I totally agree with the other reviewers here staff can be quite rude which is not good for a local chip shop,so management need to start reading reviews.

Just got a burger and chips from here. It was awful!

Ordered a take away by phone- 2 chicken fillet burgers, 1 chip with gravy and 1 chip with peas and gravy. Asked if I could have the Chips well done and the female stated ‘they’ll be cooked in with everyone else’s chips’- RUDE! When the order was collected it was in the wrong name- haven’t a clue who Clare is? Anyhow the chips, peas and gravy were somehow interpreted as chips, cheese and gravy- disgusting! The chips wee really soggy so everyone else’s must have been soggy too. Guess Gareth’s just can’t get the staff- we won’t be back.

We got a take away today..i ordered cod goujons..worst ever..the batter was overcooked..and goujons were bland..(tip to owner..ask how the hip chip in Bushmills do theirs..they are delicious)..the cheeseburger was just ok..the chips tasted like they had been fried in the same fat as the other food..£14 for cod gougons chip and qtr pound burger..im sorry but overpriced for poor quality food..for another couple of pounds just eat in the harbour

Waited 5 minutes watching one member of staff sit on there phone and ignore me while I waited to place an order. I left shortly after and they did not even seem bothered about the loss of business. This is not the first occasion and I will be letting all my friends and family from Portstewart know about this terrible service and advise them not to go and head to super dry instead unless this problem is sorted. 31.08.2019 at around 1.45pm and no a single other customer in the store.

Got an American burger and chips at 5.30 this evening. The burger was left in the cabinet for around d 5 mins before the chips were ready, all the girls could do was talk about getting there hair bleached and one girl went to talk on her phone.when I got home the burger was cold.It went in the bin

Got a delivery tonight and the two bottles of coke and two bottles of water and garlic mayo were missing. As if that wasn't bad enough the food was disgusting. The batter on fish was so hard I cracked my front tooth. Nobody ate a thing and the dogs had it. I have NEVER had such disgusting food. Will never be back

Great food an amazing menu with something for everyone and great meal deals which are value for money. I would advise most families to stop get a menu to see the range on offer and then ring your order in.

Only giving a 4* as the food quality always depends on who is cooking for that day. There is one guy who cooks a mean fish and chips :-D

Great Chicken Maryland great valur for £££

Nice enough food and the staff are pleasant enough. The portions are decent enough too. I absolutely love their Mexican chilli beef and my children love their kids meals. I've only a couple of minor gripes. They now give a lollipop with the children's meals instead of a toy. My kids preferred the toy. And my other gripe is they don't accept debit or credit card payments. If they sorted these issues then I'd give a 5 star rating.
