This restaurant is a hidden gem. It's not at the harbour front, but near the cathedral. We ate the best steak in kirkwall, perfectly cooked (rare as we ordered), good whisky and peppercorn sauce. The chips are great as well. As a starter try the smoked fish plate.

Dining here was lovely, quaint, and the staff could not have been nicer. Food was amazing, 5 guest with all different meals, fish and Chips, were wonderful, swordfish was very flavorful, lamb was done to perfection, even the soup was tasty. We had 2 bottles of wine and deserts to share and the cost was very reasonable, appetizers to share as well and the cost was under 50.00 US dollars per person. Highly recommend this out of the way find, located in the Orkney Hotel

Restaurant within the Orkney Hotel, only ate there one night as the lamb chop was overpowered by sauce. One morning the service on on an otherwise good breakfast was extremly slow

I have to admit that more than one restaurant in the Orkney islands had disappointed me. This restaurant instead is really a little gem, we found here the best food in a nice lovely setting with the garden view. We decided to go there 3 times, due to the fact that we ate well the first time. We had several good dishes: the cheese wanton, the warm terrine, the chicken, the white chocolate creme brulee, the chocolate delice. Every dish was well presented and the waitresses were kind and professional. I recommend it heartily.

We read the five star reviews and decided this would be the place for us to go for a steak dinner. Sunday evening, so we booked in advance expecting it to be busy. It wasn't - maybe four other tables. Anyway, our table looked out over the garden, so that was good. We ordered drinks, wine and beers and a St Clements. The bar staff didn't know what a St Clements is (orange and bitter lemon - as per the nursery rhyme). Not that we were going to get one anyway as they didn't have any bitter lemon. No worries, orange and lemonade would do, which arrived at the table eventually. Time to order. "Four steaks please." we said. "Sorry gentlemen, the steaks are finished. None left. Football crowd in at lunchtime. We should have told you when we brought the menus. Sorry." We took a moment or two to debate our course of action. We wanted steaks which we now couldn't have. On the other hand, Kirkwall is a busy place, we might not get in anywhere else, we had our drinks in front of us, a garden view and the remainder of the menu to choose from. We decided to stay. Time to order again. "Two beef goulash and....." The waitress immediately interrupted. "Sorry gentlemen, the goulash is finished too. I should have said. Sorry." We said that we were somewhat unhappy with the way things were going. A manager appeared. "Sorry about the steaks, gentlemen, but we had cruise ship passengers in at lunchtime..." Hmmm. Not the football crowd then? "We have venison." she offered. "No thanks" we said. We left and will not go back. A very disappointing customer experience.

This restaurant is located inside the Orkney Hotel. This place is first class all the way, yet kid friendly. The food here is AMAZING!!! The staff was very polite and professional. Customer service is what they strive for. I would definitely recommend this place. You won't be disappointed Enjoy!

This restaurant is in the Orkney hotel. We were guests at the hotel and ate here most nights. We found the food to be very good indeed, and the prices are very low indeed but similar to those of other restaurants in the local market As other reviewers have pointed out, this restaurant might indeed have a garden view, but it is not much of a garden, so if you go for the view you will be disappointed We sampled probably half the menu dishes during our stay and all were very good I do not know about their selection of wines as I did not order any. Frequently, the restaurant was packed, and when this happened the speed of service slowed considerably - I think that the kitchen probably cannot comfortably cope when it is full, but I know nothing about the logistics of catering. However the front of house staff were all very good indeed, despite being very busy

We picked this restaurant because of the name Garden View, which we thought would be nice to look out onto a garden w hilts eating. The garden turned out to be very small and in need of a thorough weeding. We were told to arrive early as they had a table for eight booked at seven o clock. We waited some time before we were given the menu and whilst we were choosing the table of four next to us began complaining rather loudly that they had been waiting for their food for an hour! This didn't bode well. A waitress had just come on duty and she sorted them out. In fact she saved that restaurants bacon as she rushed about taking orders and serving, all with a good sense of humour and efficiency. I have to say we did have quite a wait for each course but the food was exceptional and worth the wait. Just a shame that the service let them down

myself and my girlfriend were going out to celebrate her birthday on saturday evening and she wanted to go to the orkney hotel garden view so i booked a table during the week at the reception downstairs . upon arriving in the restaurant we were greeted and shown to our seats where the waitress then gave us menu's and allowed us time to browse the menu whilst she got our drinks order we placed our order and it wasnt very long before our starters arrived (the cheese fritters are great well worth a try) . i ordered a rare fillet steak and it arrived a rare fillet steak cooked to perfection with crispy chips and crispy beer battered onion rings what more could a man ask for ,,, after our mains we decided to choose to have a desert and after looking through the desert menu i opted to have the chocolate fudge brownee with coconut icecream and fresh raspberries and it was by far the tastiest desert i have had in a long time if i had tried it 1st i would have had one for a starter and a main course too ha ha . on the whole we had a great time with very attentive and friendly staff who went out of there way to ensure we had a good time 1st class meal with 1st class service at very reasonable prices !!!!

This review only relates to the bar in this establishment. We were actually looking for somewhere to have lunch, but unfortunately food was not available. There were few other customers but we did stay and have some drinks. There does not appear to be any recent reviews, but we felt that the lack of atmosphere in the bar during our visit and comparatively dark decor would not encourage us to return.

Busy kitchen on the night, by all accounts. No draught beers due to 'maintenance'? The food that myself and my partner had was fantastically underwhelming...sadly, we wanted a treat as it was our last night away. Steak and ale pie with 'seasonal vegetables', small amount of mash with handful of frozen peas/green beans. Maybe seasonal in Iceland, the shop!... Mac and cheese, surely you can't go wrong? Sadly, yes you can. Stodgy, overcooked pasta, unable to pick up a full piece and very little taste of cheese. Come on! #Serve proper veg, it's cheap. #Take less bookings if Chef is under too much pressure. #Give customers a better experience. # Quality and profit can be achieved, with a bit of thought. I'd say eat elsewhere until standards improve. A fish and chip shop would pay more attention to detail. Barman was very pleasan.

Popped in for an evening meal. 2 x very tasty burgers and some good beer later we left very happy. It isn't the grandest of places, but it does deliver good food at a fair price. Would definitely return if we were staying longer.
