Gallery Restaurant - The Swan Hotel Lavenham in Babergh

We expected really superb stay as this is not a budget hotel. Noisy room (vent fan) and food not as expected for the price

We had an excellent meal with really good service in a great atmosphere. The food and service was amazing and delivered quickly despite two short power cuts. Well done to everyone!

Ordered 2 sandwiches and drinks from bar late afternoon. Napkins and cutlery delivered to table. 45 minutes later asked the barman to chase up our sandwiches. He came out of the kitchen and totally blanked my husband. Spoke with a senior floor walker who new nothing of the issue but did refund our sandwich money. So we left an hour after arriving. Not even sure there was anyone in the kitchen as lounge area was quiet. Plenty of staff milling around pity someone couldn’t make 2 sandwiches. Fantastic old hotel pity about the service.

An excellent two night stay the Swan. Couldn't fault anything. Stunning building, very comfortable room and bathroom. Charming and helpful staff. Splendid food in the restaurant.

Went to the Swan to enjoy a 5 course dinner with music provided by Vintage Jazz Trio. As per our request, We were seated at a very nice table, not on a through route for food deliveries and with an excellent view of the performers. I'd recommend sitting to the left of the restaurant, on the elevated area to avoid too much traffic. The restaurant itself was full of character, setting the mood for the evening. the food was as expected, to a very high standard. I specifically enjoyed the lamb and desert courses. Food was delivered by a very nice server with a smile. Don't remember her name but she wore a white swan badge. The music was more American song book than pure Jazz but suited the occasion perfectly. The only downside was that the entertainment finished slightly earlier than we would have wanted but overall a very good evening and would positively consider going to future events.

We had to cancel our major holiday so decided to stay in a couple of lovely hotels in the UK and booked this hotel but have been so disappointed, especially the food on offer. One our first night, we went in full of anticipation and very hungry after a six hour drive from the Wirral. The whole meal was the worst one we have ever eaten. The restaurant wasn’t particularly busy but we had to wait a long while for the food to arrive. My asparagus and wild garlic soup was ghastly. It was vibrant green but was overpowered by the garlic and was watery , with no substance, so I sent it right back. I had requested the skate wing in advance as I overheard someone saying there was only one portion left. I wish I hadn’t bothered. It came with a huge pile on cold seaweed , :3 barely cooked halves of potatoes, no leeks and the few buttered shrimps were not buttered. This fish was grey and overcooked and after 2 mouthfuls, I sent it back. My husband’s ‘ torched’ mackerel was cold, overcooked and tasteless and the accompanying vegetables had no dressing at all. He ordered the pork which was a 4 cm round and had to saw through it as it was so tough. Also there were only a few drops of ‘jus’. The restaurant manager was very apologetic and said she would report it back. I went to bed hungry and unhappy. , which was a shame on our anniversary. The breakfast was ok but the sausages were well overcooked and tough and we specified soft fried eggs but they were solid. The adorable Kas apologised and promised soft ones next time. We played safe last night and ordered Theo chicken pies in advance but when they came , one was beef and the poor Manager couldn’t believe it but we ate them as they take 30 minutes to cook. They were very tasty but the gravy was a beef one.!! Surely it’s easy to prepare some chicken gravy. The desserts were nice. We spoke to several other guests who all said they were disappointed in the food. I did speak to James, who’ll is the Manager who told me he had read the report from the dining room. On leaving I was told there was a £5 supplement and £31 for the wine. I would definitely not eat there again. The nicest thing about the restaurant was Kas’s lovely smile and excellent service.

I feel I have to bring to your attention the substandard and expensive Mother Day dinner we were given. Instead of a well presented lunch, we were given a dinner which looked like it was cooked in the café next door. The Yorkshire was over cooked, the so call duck fat roasted potatoes were very pale and too hard to eat, the meat was nice but goodness one slice didn’t seem enough, and lastly the cauliflower was mush and stuck to the spoon. I’m afraid you have lost 2 future customers ever to return to your restaurant.

As ever the food at the Swan was excellent. Breakfast had so many options both hot and cold. We always look forward to dining in what is one of the most fabulous and historic of buildings in the country. This visit was no exception and we look forward to returning.

The Swan is half way between where my friend and I live and we decided to meet up, use the spa and have afternoon tea. My friend had car trouble and was a little late, I was allowed to sit in the lounge with a pot of tea reading my book, listening to the world go by. When my friend arrived we went to the spa and had a lovely relaxing time. My favourite was the steam room. We followed the spa with afternoon tea which was yummy and catered for our allergies. Would definitely visit again on a weekday as parking was easier.

Just a quick note to say thank you very much for making our stay and dinner on Saturday night so enjoyable. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. Special mention to Georgia in the restaurant, for helping me to locate Peter Durrant (See below) playing the piano up in the gallery and Sommelier Mark for looking after us most of the time over dinner. The whole restaurant team were great that evening, very polite and efficient. Same excellent service again from the Sunday morning guys who took care of our breakfast needs. We chose the ham hock terrine to start. It was excellent, solid pieces of ham gave texture and good flavour. This was followed by the duck breast and bonbons. Vegetable selection was perfect match. The Wine list was small and unpretentious, reasonably priced to compared to other venues. Compliments to the chefs and kitchen team. With regard to Peter Durrant, it was so nice to see him again after 25 years or so from when I last stayed with you. My special thanks to him for kindly playing an Abba medley for my wife. Looking forward to our next visit.

Hi, First time visiting The Swan today for lunch at 2pm under reservation Chloe, table for 2. I was highly disappointed. Both the waiter(es's) was lovely, but the chips were rock hard my friends chip went flying across the room when trying to pick one up with his fork! I asked for mayonnaise and was told there was none, my friend asked for fresh mint tea, was told that's fine then got served mint tea bags. No straw offered with beverages. The menu lacked options. My friend asked at reception if there were any rooms he could take a look at. Receptionist response was 'No we are fully booked'. My friend said 'Any brochure I can take a look at'. She replied 'you can view them online'. She was rude, unhelpful and frankly I would not visit again. My friend cam down all from Cornwall and the experience he felt was under par. I would like to be reimbursed for this experience today, for the prices you are charging it is unacceptable.

Excellent place to stay as a treat for a special occasion … stunning area..& the spa is outstanding, the best around….

Afternoon tea served in the main restaurant - where there was absolutely zero atmosphere. Selected out tea (sweet or savoury) - tea arrived, one tiny teapot for 2. Tea is unlimited, so this shouldn't have been an issue, but trying to get the attention of a waiter to refill was impossible, - so we had no tea for about 20 minutes of our 'afternoon tea' - looked really pretty and was all good except the sandwiches. The bread was dried out so crusty. Egg sandwich 'lemony; - had so little egg (about as much butter as you'd get in an average sandwich) the sweet stuff was good. Service was just really poor - there seemed to be three staff, but their default was to stay in the kitchen,- they didn't ever check in that everything was ok - didn't make sure we always had enough tea - and if we needed anything we had to wait until the emerged from the kitchen and then try and get their attention. On 2 occasions we had to go to the kitchen to get their attention. This wasn't cheap and was meant to be a special treat for my mother - but it we left feeling really flat - after the non existence service

We booked the 487 afternoon tea with a little apprehension. We should not have worried as everything from our arrival until our departure was an absolute pleasure. Everyone was so friendly, courteous and professional. Our table was perfect for us ( a little secluded spot in the corner for two). The food was delicious and very well presented and served. My husband even asked our table service if they could find out from the chef how they made the beautiful delicate apples on top of the dainty pie - they were very happy to tell us. We highly recommend this beautiful place and will certianly be back soon.

Poor quality gluten free bread. and inability to make porridge. long waiting time for food having immediately been given tea and toast which both became cold waiting for food at breakfast.

Beautiful rooms, atmosphere and food. One of the best sirloin steaks I’ve ever had and superb cheese board with lots of really nice touches like candied walnuts, a delicious chutney and red wine grapes. Highly recommended

This hotel is friendly the staff are attentive and very polite. Very clean hotel, even the glass wall lights were spotless. Spa was relaxing and tge staff were very helpful. Would definitely book again.

The venue is a delightful timber framed historic building, staff are very polite. However, we booked what was titled online as a 'Traditional' Afternoon Tea. We should, however, have read on: the only offering is a themed novelty American tea, to complement a new TV series on US fliers in WW2. A tradition is something done long ago, still done today. The tea on offer was offered from 1942 - 45 and not since, in my view for a reason. Some may find the sickly and over-sweet concoctions to their taste; I'm afraid we left to seek tea elsewhere.

From the moment we walked through the doors of this magnificent building my husband and I felt incredibly important and welcomed by everyone we spoke to. The food was amazing! And very reasonable considering the quality and taste- the piano being played in the background...

Reading all the great reviews we were excited to eat at this restaurant. On arrival we were seated in a strange annex with tables very far apart, it was a odd set up. We waited 15 minutes for someone to take our drinks order. Then a further 40-50 minutes for our mains. Not once did the waiter come over and explain the delay or check on us. Food was OK but took too long. We were forced to leave without dessert as it would have taken too long. I complained to the manager/staff as we left and they looked at me as if I was silly making the excuse that they were very busy rather than apologizing. Some of the worst customer service I have seen here in the UK. I would not support such an establishment again.

We were really looking forward to this afternoon tea - we had had the same back in 2019 and that experience made us determined to return. Well - what a let down!. Venue is atmospheric and pleasant inside as always and well heated for winter....but...

If you want to pay £45 for a meal that is barely worth £20 then I cannot reccomend the gallery enough. Having to chose your food before hand and it all clearly being prepared before hand. Dry meat. Burnt sausages. Forgotten items. Average food at best. The building is pretty nice though.

Lovely Hotel that is let down by staff not being trained by their superiors to the level required for the expected clientele.

When booking for a family meal, I had high hopes given the menu. When arriving the restaurant looks absolutely stunning and a lovely relaxed atmosphere with the pianist playing on the gallery. However, the whole experience then became very disappointing. The service was very basic to say the least and staff very young with no smiles or customer service at all. The food menu was given which contained a very limited wine list. Not until we asked if there was anymore wine were we then presented with the extension wine list. When it came to the food the selection was very good. Presentation excellent but execution poor. Nothing wrong with the food as such but not special what so ever, and certainly didn’t match the surroundings. ‘Cut of the day’ was filet steak, but a steak knife was definitely required (which again we had to ask for), but even then, was useless against the steak. Definitely not a filet! Sitting down at 8pm we were done and dusted by 9.30pm… and more than ready to leave. Yet again there was no attempt by the staff to check if we were ok, or even question why the steak had been left. Needless to say no tip left! The restaurant is missing a trick given the location and surroundings!

From start to finish over two nights was exceptional, the staff were so welcoming and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and because it was my birthday (and the room was available) they upgraded us to a suite. The food was super, the Weavers Spa experience was so relaxing and just what I needed. I was there last year for afternoon tea with friends and the service was exactly the same, and again for my 50th 4 years ago with a group of friends, I keep going back because I know how customer focussed they are and how beautiful the rooms are, and to top it off Lavenham is stunning! Such a treat and a wonderful experience.

My wife and I have now stayed at the Swan Hotel on three occasions and every time has been a wonderful experience from the moment we arrive and when we have to sadly leave to go home. The hotel is steeped in history and it is a fascinating place to stay and try and find out more about its rich history. The hotel also acts as a wonderful home base to return to after having explored Lavenham and its environs. The rooms are beautifully furnished and are always very inviting and have everything we need. Meal times from breakfast lunch and dinner are always a pleasant experience and the serving staff are always helpful and pleasant and answer any queries we may have. They are always there in the background to assist and are never intrusive and allow time between each course so we feel we are not being rushed. The lounges in the hotel are warm and inviting after a day walking around the locality and it’s nice to settle back into one of the comfy chairs and enjoy a drink and snack in front of a much appreciated open fire. Everything about the Swan is of the highest quality and we look forward to returning again next year for our anniversary. The extra touch of having a nice anniversary card and fudge in a bowl waiting for us in our room was very much appreciated. Many thanks to the folks at the Swan and see you again next year.

I was particularly disappointed because only the Sunday roast lunch menu was available. The booking website is misleading. When I booked, there was an option to choose either Sunday lunch or to choose the Mess Call 487 Brasserie menu. I specifically choose the Mess Call 487 Brasserie option. I was trying to avoid a roast Sunday as it's not a favourite with my family / kids and because we were celebrating two birthdays and a wedding anniversary and I was trying to achieve something a little most interesting than a roast lunch. I'd already looked at the brasserie menu in advance predicting dishes that my family were likely to select and enjoy. When I asked for the menu I'd chosen when I booked, I was informed that it was not available. I expressed my disappointment to the waiting staff. They eluded to the fact that they'd sort something out with the bill at the end. When I came to pay it was a different person than the three original waiting staff that had seated us, heard our disappointment, taken our order, etc. The bill had not been discounted. An additional course had been charged for by mistake which I asked to be removed. By the time I'd removed the extra course and the fact that the new person clearly had no idea of the issue that had arisen earlier, I couldn't even be bothered at that point to raise the issue again. I paid the bill as printed. I would really suggest that the false advertising of the website / booking system is corrected to prevent others from experiencing disappointment.

Awful food, poor quality, salty, undercooked and tasteless. 3 starters all over salted and dreadful. Main course a joke, undercooked poor cut of overpriced venison and undercooked vegetables.

A truly great meal. Menu not that extensive but food well presented and incredible flavour. I had the curried parsnip soup and venison and they were fantastic. Pricey, but great for special occassions

We stayed one night at the hotel and had bed breakfast and evening meal. We booked here because we were able to take the dog. There was a garden she could use and she was given a bowl and dog treats. Accommodation lovely and characterful our room was across from the minstrels gallery which we peeped into

I was so lucky and privileged to be given afternoon tea at the Gallery Restaurant at The Swan Hotel and Spa. The gift was in recognition for something I had done to help a friend and to say that I was humbled and grateful for such a gift is an understatement. A had the Afternoon Tea which was crafted in collaboration with the Great British Bake Off finalist Andrew Smyth. The setting in the elegant and stylish Gallery Restaurant is stunning and the Afternoon Tea was absolutely superb. It was a feast for the palate as well as the eyes. The portions were generous without being excessive, the selection of sweet and savoury struck just the right balance, the tea itself was delicious and was topped up plus the service was impeccable. I savoured every morsel of the Afternoon Tea. I was very grateful to my friend who gave me this treat but also to the chef and waiting staff who made it an event to remember.

Excellent stay in all ways. Accommodation, food, service, cleanliness exemplary. Stayed in the Priory Dairy which was first class.

The choice was quite limited. The Plaice dish was pleasant enough.The chicken pie was too big and filled with what appeared to be frozen chunks of tough bleached chicken. The jus with the chicken was beefy and incredibly salty . The dish itself lacked finesse and had unimaginative vegetables. Both deserts were ok although no fresh peach with the Melba . The Heritage Tomato starter turned out to be a cold soup although nowhere on the menu did it say so. Very odd rubbery greasy bread was offered that was more like a heavy cake and it wasn’t very nice at all. The waiting staff were very efficient which was just as well really .,

Exceptional hotel with extremely high standards. The Gallery restaurant menu was outstanding, and the staff were incredibly polite and knowledgeable. The housekeeping team are very good, and leave the rooms spotlessly clean. The spa is well worth a visit. Cannot fault this hotel and spa....

Quite a formal setting but very appropriate for Sunday lunch. One of the other restaurants would have been a better choice for our family gathering. But the Gallery was a lovely restaurant just the wrong choice for our particular gathering on this occasion.
