In relation to Rob's comments we booked The Starr Inn not realising until we arrived that we could not bring drinks through from the Courtyard Tap House, to the extent that the boys were virtually accosted on their way back to the bar to be informed that they could not bring their drinks back. They were actually asked rather rudely, "Where are you going?". This was a dinner with our friends to say goodbye as we are moving out of the area and, as I expressed on the night, it ruined the evening as the boys spent most of the evening through in the Tap House as the Starr do not offer any draft beers, only bottled. It's such a shame as we, the girls, did enjoy the food. My husband has spoken to the owners of the Tap House since our visit and was advised that previously you were allowed to take their drinks through to the restaurant. Surely they need to come to some kind of collaboration? I have to say that for these reasons we would not eat in the restaurant again and would not recommend it but would definitely use the Tap House again. In this kind of industry there is no excuse for being rude to their customers.

A heady combination of truly horrible food and unfriendly staff make this a real one to miss - such as shame to see an Essex institution reduced to this: will not be back. Big up to Laura at the ‘next door’ Courtyard Tap (a different business, as the Starr seemed so keen to keep reminding us) for welcoming us once we had quickly tired of the Starr and keeping the good beer & conversation coming.

Visited today for Fathers Day lunch with my husband, daughter and 6 year old grandson. My daughter made the booking and mentioned she had a 6 year old when she booked and wasn’t advised at that point that they don’t cater for young children. We were advised at the table when we asked for the children’s menu. The staff were polite and helpful and advised that a smaller portion of the set menu could be ordered for my grandson. It was a set Father’s Day menu £38 for 3 courses, with a 15% reduction for a child’s meal. There wasn’t the option to select any 2 courses for a reduced cost. The Sunday roast was disappointing as the vegetarian roast was a vegetable pie and the roast beef was underdone when my daughter had requested well done. The vegetables were carrots and parsnips which were very overdone and chewy and the Yorkshire was very dry. The roast potatoes were ok but again quite hard and chewy on the outside. I had a cauliflower cheese side which was very nice. All in all although the staff were helpful and polite the meal itself was below par, and not worth £38 per person. It’s such a pity because we had hoped it was going to be somewhere we could go locally for a family Sunday roast regularly.

We wanted to try this new Resturant in dunmow, was taking my Dad for an early Father’s Day lunch with my brother also. I have a 15 month old child who came with us. We were told we could sit anywhere and asked for a highchair, we were told they don’t have high chairs which I thought was odd but fine he can sit with me, I didn’t want to make a fuss, we ordered drinks and our food. Menu was just the classic menu very limited but looked ok, ordered our food, waitress wasn’t exactly friendly but not rude. We then had someone come over and tell us they do not usually except young children. We had already ordered our food and had our drinks, it was us and one other table, why wasn’t we told this at the beginning? I have no problem with adult only restaurants but do not let us get seated and order. The lady said we can stay but she has customers coming at 12:30, to say I felt extremely awkward was an understatement! Again I can’t work out why we wasn’t told about the age restrictions when we first arrived. Extremely disappointed in how we were handled, horrible to be made to feel as I did, which was totally avoidable.

Went as a family group on a week night , only 8 other diners but it took 45 minutes to get our starters , we ordered some drinks which took 20 minutes but we had to ask twice before we got them . Food was fabulous but the terrible service let it all down sadly . Thete were only 2 young girls serving and although they were friendly they just didnt have a clue about their job . It really let the place down , what ever are the owners thinking off . Such a shame. Wouldn't return due to this matter .

Sunday lunch with the family. Food was fantastic. My only negative feedback is that front of house staff are very young and appear very inexperienced. Bar staff didn’t know how to present a G&T. Had to ask for condiments, cutlery and wine however the food made up for lack of service. Just needs someone with a bit more experience to guide and train them as they were lovely

Very Poor, and a huge disapointment. We were regulars here many years ago. We drifted away as ownership changed and this is the first time we've used it since Fultons took over. So.. from start to finish here's my experience1. arrived to see three people behind the bar, but not one of them greeted us2. our table for two was enormous and set up for 6 or 8. Apparently this was because the people on our table were still seated. No one took our coats3. not offered a drink4. waitress asked us to move. Apparently, the table was not free. 5. The dont do spicy tomato juice, just normal. If I want, they could add the spice manually for me!!6. Our water arrived, but no glasses7. Starter soup arrived but no spoons8. Spoons arrived 9. Glasses eventually arrived. No ice or lemon10. Main Course arrived. To be fair, the beef and Lamb were lovely. 11. had to ask for mint sauce and Horseradish which eventually arrived but with no spoons12. Spoons arrived with an explanation that the waitress normally uses her knife"We really couldnt face desert or coffee and left I can only assume the boss wasn't in. we saw no sign of anyone in charge or setting standards. Our candle wasnt lit. It was in a small glass holder that was broken. Not cracked... actually broken with 25% of the side missing and a sharp edge. On the way out, we almost tripped on an extention lead that was running a wire out to the from to the building. A sad end for a once amazing retaurant.

I ate here with my son, but we were very disappointed. The restaurant was freezing cold, the food was not great. There was very little knowledge of ingredients in the food being served and it was not easy to find out what was dairy free on the menu. The staff were pleasant enough, but perhaps dedicated allergy menus would help. I had the pork, with crackling, but the crackling was inedible and looked and tasted like polystyrene. As we left, feeling we certainly had not had value for money, one of the chefs was in the courtyard, outside the kitchen door, vaping, which looked so unprofessional. All in all a disappointing experience, we will not go back.

This was our second visit to the restaurant and the food and service were of the same high standard as on our first visit. What was remarkable was the honesty of the staff. We paid in cash and told the waitress to keep the change as a tip. Inadvertently we gave her five £20 notes instead of the four which would have been sufficient. Five minutes after paying, the waitress reappeared and said that she thought we had overpaid, returning £20 to us. She didn’t have to do that but we really appreciate the thought. It’s not about the money, it’s about the ethos. Well done Star Inn, we’ll be back!

I wasn’t expecting the high standard of food we had, as the last time I came here for a mid week lunch there had been nothing on the menu to entice me so we left after having a drink. The food was absolutely fantastic. The pea soup was complemented by those who had it. The carpaccio of beetroot was a wonderful starter as it was light. The chicken with gnocchi was so tender, I could go on and on about each dish but in the end it all came down to one thing really good food imaginatively cooked and presented. Wonderful staff wonderful food a really enjoyable evening and finally a well priced meal coming out at £30 a head for three courses one Prosecco and three soft drinks. We will return.

We had not made a reservation but luckily there had been a cancellation so we were seated at a very private table in the conservatory area of the restaurant. Well balanced menu, not too large, seems to offer something for everyone. My husband and I had the Sunday roast, both beef and pork well done, veg not over cooked, only criticism was the roast potatoes which were not at all crisp. Service pleasant, checked that everything was ok a few minutes in to our meal, perfect timing. We were also asked if we would mind if the air conditioning was switched on which shows customer care. The price was fair and we will certainly return.

We took a drive out into deepest Essex to find this little gem. On the hottest day in England so far this year, we had a drink in the small garden and watched some fabulous cars go by before we ate. The restaurant itself was elegant with low beamed ceilings (a tad on the hot side due to the scorching days sun). Service was lovely, polite and friendly. Food was superb both in flavour and presentation. Portions were good sizes with side dishes being enough for 2 or more people. Nice atmosphere where you could here each other rather than the rest of the people dining. My friend and I shared the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and I can honestly say it was the best I’ve ever had. My only one little moan is that they had no mint for a fresh mint tea, despite of having it earlier for our Pimms, and said they had run out of it, and the waitress did forget to bring a second bottle of water that we had asked for. Not a cheap meal, but good quality, beautifully presented tasty food.

This was my first visit with a friend who had been a number of time and had recommend that we should visit. So off we went for a belated birthday celebration. The starters were delicious, we had the Hens Egg with black pudding and the parfait. Stunning. For mains my friend ordered the lamb which was delicious but a little on the rich side with lots of oil or butter. I was super excited to see they had steak on the menu and listed the weights. Having seen this, I thought to myself, this place must know about meat. I often find myself having to ask for the weight of the cut. Without hesitation I ordered the Rib Eye medium rare. Unfortunately what I was served was a tough Rump steak. I know my cuts of meat and it most definitely wasn’t a Ribeye. The staff were so lovely that I didn't want to kick up a fuss so just tucked in, in hindsight I wish I had as I do feel slightly cheated, knowing that a Rump steak is much cheaper than a Ribeye and I was charged for a ribeye.

We have lived in the local area for many years and now live in the town and visit the Star fairly regularly. The last 18 months has proved to be a huge turning point for the Star and I believe they now have a perfect recipe for a great restaurant. the food is good with something for everyone and a bar that caters for the gin lovers as well as a small but good list of affordable wines. But the selling point for the Star is the front of house team! They are great and make you feel really welcome and are clearly happy working in a friendly and busy restaurant. I visited the Star with my family and found a gem that I have recommended to others. We went for lunch and I have to say it was the best food I have ever tasted! My steak was perfect and the Tonka bean desert was amazing Upmarket menu beautifully plated with great service! Will definitely be returning in the near future.

We have lived in Dunmow for going on 4 years now. To us the S******s H***d H***l was the one to go to for amazing food. We have dabbled in the Star’s menus, but never it never really caught on. Roll forward and to be honest The Star is the number one in Dunmow. We have been in for drinks many of a time, but food was not really part of it. Then last week we had some of you new brunch menu and wow. Lovely front of house people, lovely food. We came away saying next week will be a repeat. Then on Saturday we were a bit delayed getting out, we turned up at 3.55 and were told last orders were at 4pm, oh well our loss, not, the lady on the bar spoke to the kitchen and, yes, we could eat. Long story short, fabulous food sent out by someone who is so professional, along with very understanding, customer focused front of house staff. The Star is now our number one. I do not want to go on, but the food that came to our table was unique. So much so, when we have “out of country”visitors, this will be our place of custom. Many thanks to you staff for making our visit, both now and future so special. 10 star service and environment!!!

We found this place after we went for a short walk around the village/ town. We only really popped in there for a drink, after seeing the menu we decided to have an evening meal there as well. Really glad we did, the menu was nice, if not anything 'special', but all three of us had really nice, tasty, filling meals. The prices were very good for what we had as well. All of us were very impressed with the quality, choice and value of the restaurant. Would recommend this restaurant as somewhere to eat.

Stayed here for 7 nights. Had to move rooms once because of the long stay etc, which was fine. Moved from a twin to a double. First room was lovely. Spotless. Second room was called the ‘Ascot’. I’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world because of my work but this room I found to be beautiful. Whoever designed the room, furniture/ fixings/ bathrooms etc should be proud. Very high standard. I think we paid £55 a night which was so cheap it was almost wrong. Fantastic value for money, seeing as I was paying almost £90 in the Saracen opposite which didn’t come close to the standard of rooms. All the toiletries you could want, tea : coffee: biscuits , lovely tv, spotless everywhere. Was very impressed with this hotel. I would stay here again 100% and I would highly recommend it.

My wife and I recently enjoyed the pleasure of dining, on many occasions, at the Star Inn. Circumstances also allowed us an opportunity to experience residing in rooms at The Stables located adjacent to the Inn.

We have been to The Star Inn on and off for about a year now, basically ever since it changed from Chophouse back to The Star Inn, and it just keeps getting better. There were 6 of us having Sunday Lunch, 4 of us chose the roast beef (cooked to perfection - pink and so tender), 1 had the Vegetarian Wellington (which came with a lush green sauce - which i wish i knew what it was) and 1 had the chicken with stuffing. I was amazed at the quality, portion and overall presentation of every dish - the veg and extra gravy was very welcome.

We ate at The Star recently for my partner's Birthday, while the food was good, but I wouldn't rate it as fantastic, the service was somewhat lacklustre, and the bar/waiting staff gave the impression that they would rather be somewhere else, The awful piped music was nothing short of offensive to the ear, even after asking for it to be turned down. A forgotten drinks order, and no light in the Gents loo. Each of the above points taken on their own wouldn't be noticed but put together, they took the shine off an otherwise enjoyable evening.

It was late on a Saturday afternoon when we came here and were very pleasantly surprised. The restaurant decor was very nice and comfortable with lots of tables but placed so that you didn't feel cramped.

We held a celebratory retirement meal for 40 guests at the Star fultons restaurant - we could not have been looked after better, we had drinks on arrival and were looked after so well. We took over the charming private dining room which is lovely very personal, full of character and comfortable. Our food was served very quickly it was well organised and really delicious - full marks to the team would definitely go again.

We booked a table and arrived on time. We were shown to our table by a most polite and friendly waitress. I was seated with the sunlight directly into my eyes, I mildly complained and she reset the table to my satisfaction.

We have recently celebrated our anniversary at The Star. From the initial booking Dean and Michelle made our event stress free. The venue was amazing and the accommodation finished to a very high standard. The staff were very friendly and accommodating ensuring our night was a success nothing was too much trouble. The canapés were delicious and commented on by all our guests, breakfast the next morning was lovely with use of local ingredients. The star really is a little ‘gem’ in dunmow. Well done to Dean and the team.

Had a lovely meal here for one of our first nights away without the kids in ages. Staff are friendly and efficient but it's the food that impressed. Really good quality and nicely presented, portion sizes were excellent. Highlights were the duck which was cooked to perfection and the onions in the garlic potatoes which were crispy and sweet. Really impressed, this is a gem of a place. One bit of advice, the chocolate delice is to die for, don't order anything else...

Visited the Star Inn with a friend and enjoyed it so much that we used it as a planned stop at half way, during a 100 mile bike ride with a group of 15. The food has been lovely both times with a varied menu, there are a wide range of beers and the staff are always very helpful and friendly. Everybody in our party enjoyed the meal and hospitality and would certainly go back. On the first visit, it was busy with families and groups of people just sitting and chatting - so suits all needs.
