Angel and Harp in Uttlesford

My friend and I had a lunch booking at Angel and Harp on a Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival we were stood for about 10 minutes before anyone greeted us, despite many staff members walking around us and chatting near us and could clearly see we were waiting. We were finally seated and asked for a drinks menu, this took a very long time to come. We then ordered our drinks which took approx. 45 minutes to arrive. The food was served before this. The service was incredibly slow throughout our whole visit. We ordered pizzas, halloumi fries and sweet potato fries and I will say the food was very good. We then had to ask to pay and yet again were waiting a long time for the bill to be brought to our table. The restaurant was not overly busy either. Although the food was good I probably wouldn’t return here based on how poor the service was - when you have to ask for things constantly and sometimes more than once it’s not very enjoyable.

Visited with the family for a drink and afternoon meal as the weather was nice. The problem with the Angel & Harp is you never know what you’re going to get, be it bad food, service or both. Today was a bit of both. A calamari starter came out virtually inedible, really hard and chewy. After eating only two of the pieces, my daughter gave up. When the waitress came with the mains I asked her to take the starter away and explained why, we did get an apology but no offer of a replacement or if she’d like something else. The mains came out and the bacon on my burger was rock hard, batter on the cod overdone as well as the pastry on a pie. I was surprised no one came to check how the meals were at any point, especially after sending food back with negative comments. A lot of the time, when the service is slow or poor, we’re left bewildered as to why, as it’s usually quiet and there seem to be lots of staff on. It’s a real shame, because when the chef and wait staff are on form the food is top notch and the service is great, it just seems too much of a risk going there because you never know what you’re going to get.

What a pleasant experience. Upon arrival into building was greeted by staff who were attentive and polite and asked if any of the group had any allergies. This restaurant has a lovely bar and spacious seating. Food looked and tasted fresh with good presentation a credit to the chef. Waiting staff were very quick in ensuring every glass was filled even though it was rather busy. Highly recommend this establishment as a go to for food.

We come here regularly for breakfast & lunch. Yesterday was a disappointment items we ordered didn’t arrive even asking for the missing items they still were missed. There were only a couple of other tables occupied during the breakfast service but it was still chaotic. The waiter seemed more interested in lighting the open fire which despite his efforts kept going out. Usually the staff are very efficient hopefully this is a one off bad experience but for the time being we will try somewhere else

Saturday lunchtime and a varied menu. Delightful atmosphere and great service

If you have the hangover munchies or just have a big appetite and want a roast dinner this is the one... mexa mix... LOTS OF FOOD and yummy. My friend couldn't finish it looked perfect to even share. Food is nice but the pizza looked disappointing but the mussels are delicious. Waitress was absolutely lovely. Beer garden is great too.

Just had a 2for1 roast here and would not recommend. The yorkshire pudding was rock hard, roast potatoes barely cooked or left over from Sunday and very little gravy. Staff unfriendly and not attentive. Over priced and would not recommend.

Staff friendly on arrival..very helpful with menus for those with dietary needs..food service extremely quick considering how busy place was on a Saturday afternoon..would certainly recommend and will definitely visit again..Great afternoon spent with the friends we met up with.

Beautiful pub with great food and lovely staff!

All would have been fine had it not been for the chicken wings - the chicken wings had not been properly cooked through and there was still blood on the bones. One entire chicken wing was so uncooked that I was unable to eat it. I pointed this out to the waitress (I would say that she was middle aged). And so the bill arrived, and what was deducted ...... £1.70!!! My goodness, what can I say? It is nearly laughable but true.

Had a table booked for 13 for my Mum's birthday. Table was set out lovely, staff were very attentive and couldn't do more for us. The food was amazing and so too was the atmosphere. They even brought out a birthday cake and sung along with us. Definitely recommend and will be going back 👏

Absolutely awful place. Spent an hour at the bar trying to get served, not enough staff and long waiting times.. Pushed into a small corner table surrounded by standing drinkers with loud voices. Food wasn't up to much when it finally arrived and the pricing here is horrific. London prices and it's nowhere near London. Avoid this place!

Put the fire on !! This is a cosy pub with gorgeous staff and a working fireplace but they never want to put it on ! The pubs freezing ! Get the fire on ! What a waste !

Arrived at midday - the place was full with kids and adults (connected to a nearby football event) - almost impossible to walk around as everyone was standing. Despite this we decided to stay and have a Sunday roast. Big mistake! The food arrived within 6-7 minutes, never a good sign. The road potatoes were the worst I have ever had (saying something as my mum was a shocking cook!). the meat was dry, the cauliflower cheese was inedible.

We love this place, whether for a few drinks, a meal, or the regular events such as live music, quizzes and theme nights. On our last visit, I ate the smoked haddock on the specials menu, it was delicious!!! I really hope that they add this to the main menu! My husband chose a pizza, and because they have their own pizza oven, as usual it was lovely. The staff are delightful. We would particularly like to thank Genty and Glenn, who always go the extra mile.

1st Feb 24 - 2 fo 1 on steak day is excellent. Doesn't mean 2 fo 1, cheapest meal is free. Full rack of ribs and Ribeye steak. 7th Nov 23 - meal for 4 plud drinks for £100, food was excellent and plentyful. Staff also as good. 2 for 1 roast dinner, excellent value for the money. I would have preferred "proper roast potatoes" rather than the "soft roast", shown the oven then removed

Just had lunch from the festive menu with a group of 12. Every one of us was delighted with our meals and plan to do it again. A really good experience with excellent service, particularly from the lovely Lorraine.

Just had Xmas lunch at the Angel and Harp. The food was excellent, massive portions, and huge that is to the staff (Lorraine and all ❤️) for creating the Christmas atmosphere.

We held our christmas party here, the food was spot on, all came out hot, the atmosphere was extremely convivial and the staff could not have been more helpful. Highly recommended!

Never been here before. Met family for lunch mid week,couldn't believe how busy it was, the menu choice was great, as was the food. The staff were excellent. Definitely recommend, we will be back.

We are local residents and have been customers of the Angel and Harp for years as we love the ambiance and the food on the whole is usually good. HOWEVER based on the last 3 visits we will think twice about visiting again . Sadly the service is appalling !!!!! Young staff ( and more mature , one in particular who was so rude on a previous occasion ) who clearly have had no proper training and who dont even know how to greet customers and be pleasant and polite , not the staff's fault if they have not been trained correctly . On saturday recently 18 NOVEMBER my partner stood at an empty bar for 20 minutes to hope to be served with drinks but 2 members of staff were too busy trying to work out how to use a till whilst the other bar staff member served another customer from a large party who jumped in at the bar . Most experienced bar staff who are good at their job keep a keen eye on who is priority at the bar , and the bar was not busy . My partner and I were so exasperated we walked out. We had been considering eating , so a larger sale was missed out on . A previous time we visited it was for my birthday and we were spoken to very rudely by a member of the team , ( we are just over 60 and have always taught respect to our sons & daughters ) . We have visited many times with our family and friends and recommended but this will not be the case after our recent experiences . By contrast we frequent a lovely pub / restaurant in Stansted Mountfichet , we visited on sunday and the 2 experiences could not be more different ! The manager at the Angel & Harp would do well to take a visit to the competition venues and see how a professional bar and eating pub is run. We both run our own businesses ( not hospitality ) but know how to court customers and value business especially in these hard times , its not rocket science .

Frequently lunch here weekdays and have never been disappointed, however tried Sunday lunch for first time and food poor. Roast Turkey of dubious quality and albino baked potatoes. Cod either cooked earlier or reheated, soggy batter. In defence, the restaurant was packed but for us it’s weekdays only in future.

Just found this pub by chance/ choice (looking for restaurants nearby on Google maps ), while driving for an overnight stay not far away. Had good reviews. Very impressed with the good selection on the menu. Although obviously busy, they got a table for us and in reasonable time ,we were served our drinks and food We were very pleased and enjoyed our experience here. Definitely would go back again ,!!!!👍

Great beer garden, so much choice on the menu. The beef and prawn skewer starter was epic. Had liver and bacon for main which I ve not had in years, very solid effort. We visited in October but I'm sure during the summer would be even better.

We found this busy pub restaurant a delight. Great service( Lorraine and Co) varied menu, ambience ( beams and log fire) and excellent food. We shall definately return

Party of 7 for Sunday lunch, we felt well looked after despite it being manically busy. The food came out quick and it was genuinely pretty good. With good portions. Thumbs up for the chefs and the staff on shift, 22/10.

Had a “celebration of life” there on a busy Sunday afternoon. Finger buffet and teas and coffees. Didn’t know how many would be turning up but all the staff were very helpful and accommodating. Can’t review the finger buffet food as I didn’t have any, but I had a roast dinner later on in the day and it was lovely. People didn’t know the teas and coffees were for them which was our fault for not telling them as they were in a different place to where the buffet was. We were lucky with the weather as it was gorgeous so plenty of room inside and out for them all to mingle. We have been there many times over the years and you didn’t disappoint Angel and Harp. Thank you 🙏

Only a brief stop here but staff were very pleasant. Food was good and food coming out of the kitchen looked very tasty as well. Traditional pub . Lovely garden with seating as well. Parking a bit tricky when busy.

Beautiful location in a quiet village. On this occasion we only had a drink, but l would like to return to eat.

Lovely pub, I haven't been for a number off years but popped in on a Friday night, around 7pm, for a couple of drinks. Very lively. Lovely outdoor space, good choice of drinks. Will return to try out the food, as was good on a previous visit and what I saw go past also looked delicious lol.

The food is ok, the service is not. Family meal for 5 across 3 generations. Took a food order without drinks. Had to be reminded to take a drinks order too. Staff didn’t know the difference between bitter and lager. Let alone what bitter was available. Ordering a single pint to with my meal (choice of three, two of which were ‘off’) - took 20 mins to arrive. I could see it hadn’t been ordered and it took two staff and three chase ups for them to do it. Clearing the table, managed to drop a plate of tomato spaghetti right behind another customer. I didn’t see an apology or even that member of staff come back and deal with the mess on the floor. In the end that table had to ask someone else to clear it up. That member of staff didn’t seem apologetic that it had happened either. I wonder if the staff are getting any training. Or if the Angel & Harp even care. The food is adequate (burger, fish and chips, pizza etc), but when your team don’t know the difference between bitter and lager, or whether the food is on the floor or plate - you’ve got to ask yourself, would you better off at The Lion and Lamb at Clanfield or The Saracens Head in Dunmow or The Three Willows at Birchanger. If it’s just s beer you’re after, get it from the bar yourself. If you want food and service, think about the other choices you have.

So, we happened to be in the area and arrived ravenous, early on a Sunday evening in a boiling hot a September's night. After a a couple of swift cooling halves of Lager we ordered one of the best beef roast dinners I have eaten in a while. Large Yorkshire, loads of veg of the day, crispy outer fluffy inside roasties, bathed in delicious gravy. Nice thick slice of tender beef went down very nicely indeed, especially with some added cauliflower cheese.. This topped off with an ice cold drink, a glass ofred and then a last minute coffee and complimentary biscuit, proved to be spot on. All in all a very pleasant stop over on a beautiful warm evening where we could dine outside on one of the many tables. Staff were friendly, locals welcoming and toilets were still pretty presentable after what must have been a very busy pub day. Would highly recommend a visit to this 16th Century hidden gem if you are hungry, thirsty or both. Ps the kids there seemed to be having loads of fun too. Ideal family gathering and feeding spot in beautiful Essex countryside.. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Lovely pub. Great friendly service. Lovely beer. Food was good, however for me personally, the dippy drippy burger with added bacon sounded better than it tasted. Everything cooked to perfection. I loved the separate cheese sauce to dip in. However from what I could taste of it, I think it needed a bit more of that secret sauce. I know everyone else enjoyed the food and drinks.

Probably the best place in Dunmow to eat. Good menu options, tasty food. A little expensive but you get what you pay for. Lovely outside sitting area as well as a quaint inside. Helpful staff.

We have lived in Dunmow for 25 years + and have always visited this pub through its various ownerships. We had not been for a while, until after I had a life saving major heart operation last year and this was the first place we chose to go for breakfast when I came out of hospital. We have continued to go since then on a regular basis and it never fails to satisfy. We have always been served by Lorraine since the first day we went and she has been fantastic. Last weekend was a year since I had the operation and we chose to go back for a small family meal to celebrate the success of the day. Well what can I say, my wife had other ideas and with the help of Lorraine she organised a surprise gathering of family and friends in a cordoned off part of the marquee with buffet. What made it even more special was that they don't normally do a buffet on a Sunday as it is normally roast dinner only. After Lorraine explained to her manager the importance of the day she was more than happy to help make the day happen. For this I am really grateful, and despite not getting the steak dinner I thought I was having it was so much better. Thank you to everyone involved as I know the organisation for this on a day you would not normally do it would have been a challenge. We will continue to go for breakfast whenever we can and hope that Lorraine is always there.

We have visited here many times,and the food has always been excellent. This time however the roast beef was tough and roast pork tenderloin was,anything but tender. Roast potatoes were hardly roasted. Veggies were lovely though. Bit disappointing.

Overcooked fish either refried or dirty oil, full of greese, no feedback from kitchen despite apparently informing them, no apology. Beer tasted like bottom of the barrell. We used to live in Dunmow when the pub and food was superb with great staff. Sadly its not fit to lick your boots, and the staff just dont give a dam

Booking a table for 1730 hours on Friday, I thought it would be before the rush. How wrong can one be. I could not even get in the car park. Once the food ordered came, I could see why the place was so popular. Very varied menu as an equally extensive gluten fee selection. Could not quite finish the mixed grill even though I was hungry. Will be visiting again but maybe no Friday evening.

Food was very nice, sadly the staff not at all friendly or in one moment quite rude. Such a shame as spoilt the whole experience

We had a family party in the marquee last Saturday. Our choice of venue turned out to be an excellent one! Genty and her team looked after us so well and the food was delicious. Everyone had a great time! I would thoroughly recommend the Angel and Harp for a family celebration.

I have eaten here a few times in the last decade. My most recent visit was less good than previously. It was too busy, very noisy, several dishes were unavailable and the service was poor as apparently a couple of staff had not arrived. The food we got though was good. I will think carefully before visiting again.

What can I say.. except that I makes a very change to go into a restaurant and find absolutely nothing wrong. My work and I Visited this establishment on Saturday 22nd july approximately 2pm, on looking around just waiting to be shown to a table noticed I noticed how clean thd place was and what a lovely atmosphere, we were shown to our table by a delightful waitress that made you feel at ease and important at the same time. The food was absolutely fantastic in appearance and in taste. And when in Came to paying the bill I was shocked as I honestly thought it would be much more . (VHM) That's very happy man. A big thank you to the "Angel and Harp" And staff For doing such a great job.

We attended for breakfast and lunch whilst having a small business meeting. It is a lovely place, pleasant staff who were happy. The food was very good and the atmosphere was great. We will be back.

Terrible. Sat outside, worst service I have received. Food dumped on the table, not even a hello from the server. Natchos with no topping, and dry. Food was below average. Really disappointed.

Just left the Angel and Harp at 8.15 on Friday 07 July. Meal was very good as always, but ruined by the atmosphere. We sat in the marquee and it was like sitting in a dustbin. There was litter all over the floor and no tables were cleared while we were there. In addition, children were running around screaming. PLEASE get staff to look after the surroundings, and parents PLEASE look after your children. It will make it better for us all.

Good venue. Good food. And on this occasion very good company. Update 30/6/23. Still very good. Service was a little slow today as they were catering for a wedding party. Difficult for them when they were also trying to serve general public.

I had the best Sparerips of my whole life. Very friendly staff....nice place. Will come again.

Wasn't overly busy but waited over an hour for starters, drinks took around half hour to come over, staff seemed more interested in serving drinks an food to outside areas an drinkers than restaurant but have had better experiences in the past on different days, food was okay but fish an chips was very greasy this time shamefully an batter was very thick

Not a pub. It's a restaurant. Bad service. You're asked if you have a reservation while having to queue single file at the bar while 100 staff float about doing anything but pouring pints. Tables set for meals. No atmosphere.. Like I say, not a pub...

Nice place to eat but the waitress didn't write our order down and tried to memorize my order after informing her twice of which burger I wanted she put through a different burger and forgot the onion rings but food was good

Very busy, popular pub with all age groups especially with the large beer garden and marquee terrace in this glorius weather, food was quick and very good, scampi was good size and crisp, chips were crispy outer fluffy inside, my sea bass (£18.95)was cooked to perfection with crispy skin, potatoes and chorizo, rocket and parmesan, spot on chefs, who were on show through a window by the inside bar, kitchen looked clean and professional. Heresy bitter a nice summer pint followed by a 0.5% Adnams Ghost Ship so a safe drive home too. 5*

Have been many times to the Angel & Harp as it’s a ‘half way’ meeting place for me to meet friends. The problem is it is getting increasingly difficult to park. The last time I came their were a lot of walkers that had parked there, some eating but not all, they had been there for over three hours and today I waited 30 minutes. We did mention it last time but it has not got any better. An idea might be to enter the registration when entering so you know who should not be parked there. My friends are now asking to meet elsewhere. Unfortunately today the meal was very disappointing as well. We both had Skate which was very dry and broccoli that was cold , they didn’t charge us for the broccoli though when we told them. The staff are very obliging and friendly but service is very slow.

Had a family get together. They were very helpful a section of the pub was made for us. Only problem I had was guessing how many people were having coffee/tea paid for 30 and only 3 had it, so it waste of money for me . Apart from that food was great staff was great.
