Sunday lunch here today was quite superb: amazing food, smiley, knowledgeable service, relaxed atmosphere, and a beautiful setting. We enjoyed rillettes of confit duck and cauliflower/blue cheese panda cotta, then hake fillet with sweet potato and lemon purée; fillets of sea bream with carrot and ginger purée; desserts were pear and d hazelnut cake; mango cheesecake with orange and cookie dough sorbet. All faultless. We will definitely return.

Visited today to a quite exceptional and well priced experience. Six courses of stunning food. All were beautifully presented with amazing flavours. Chef is quite playful with the flavour combinations, so be prepared to be challenged. Highlight for both of us was the amazing beef accompanied by the most amazing roast potato I have ever eaten. Both desserts were delicious but very different. Toilets were up windy stairs, it is a beautiful listed building so constrained in what they can do. Staff are lovely if a little abbreviated in course description. Had hoped to meet chef but the place was full on a Tuesday lunchtime! We drove a round trip of nearly 200 miles, was it worth it? Goodness yes!

We had a lovely lunch, with attentive staff, in the medieval dining room on the left. This was to celebrate my son’s birthday and they had printed Happy Birthday at the top of the menu for him. Tables were set with white linen, polished glassware and the room had tables set at discreet distances. The food was excellent, beautifully presented. Excellent wine list, we chose a house red and was good. There were several options, not just a roast, with inventive starters. Check out the menu. I would highly recommend this lovely restaurant for any occasion, in a beautiful setting.

We treated our niece and her husband for lunch here to celebrate her 40th birthday - what a treat it was. We have eaten here many times before and Sunday lunch lived up to, and exceeded our expectations. What amazing food, the roast beef and the roast potatoes were just the best. A lovely atmosphere in the smaller downstairs room with beautifully laid up tables with fresh linen. The staff who served up were superb, so professional. It was a first class experience in every way, and we can't wait to return. We only wish this superb eatery was near us in Devon, not 6 hours away in Suffolk!

All my previous reviews have been really positives in all aspects of the F & G. However things can go easily awry. Our reservation was booked online as normal. Upon arriving we checked in under the name making the booking and were taken into a room that we lated found out was not classed as the restaurant. So we were seated on a table for 6 (4 of us) and started taking a look at the menu when we asked to move onto a table for 4 adjacent. This we did and then noticed that the menu was not the restaurant 'table de hote'. When asked that its was not the menu for us the server said yes it is as its the Pub menu. It was pointed out to her that we had booked for the restaurant room and the TDH, no she said, look you have booked this room in the comments section online. Again it was pointed out to her that, no we had booked online requesting the specific room as normal. She came out with the booking sheet and commented, look you asked for the room here on the paper. We asked what name it was booked under, guess what, yes not our name. So at this point we were moved again to the correct room with a simple apology. This could have easily ruined our evening but fortunately the Chef's cooking, delivery of our meal was as good as always, thank goodness for that.

Really good tasting menu, which was also good value. Wide range of flavours, wasn't anything that wasn't good. Service was perfect, friendly and genuine. Very considerate to my disabled needs. I had asked about using a rollator in the restaurant by email but nothing else. When we got there they had reserved a space for me by the door, and came out to tell us and check i was OK with the 2 steps in the pub and then 1 step into the downstairs restaurant area. There is more seating upstairs for the restaurant, so if stairs are a challenge I would let them know. Highly recommend.

We had a lovely meal at the Fox and Goose, the menu is bold and seasonal but not pretentious e.g. lamb with gooseberry sauce and mint pesto and the treacle tart with blackberry and hazelnut was mind-blowing. The owner served us, filling in for a staff shortage, always nice to see them getting involved; we felt like the price was completely reasonable and we were happy it was going somewhere worthy. Definite recommend.

We've been here so many times, we've lost count: our wedding meal (2009), parents 80th celebrations, Christmas eves, New Year's eve's, a special ask for grouse (when it's not a usual for the menu, and perfectly cooked), and any old excuse to eat at this wonderful place, whether with family, or just us two.... Paul and his team don't need the accolades of the Good Food Guide or Michelin status, they are on their own, standing out of the crowd in this part of the Suffolk/Norfolk border. If you're visiting the area this restaurant is a must. The food is great, the staff are polite and welcoming. Service is very good. They take care of you and make you feel special whether you eat at lunchtime or evening, in the more informal downstairs area or upstairs à la Carte. They cope with any requests. We live very locally and thank our lucky stars to have this on our doorstep (since 2008).

The Fox & Goose has always been a little hidden gem. The standard of food has always been very good and I must say that the pate on their main menu is really excellent. The last two occasions I have been however I have ordered the fillet steak (on the rarer side of medium rare), which I must add was cooked perfectly, however the meat itself was more chewy than I would have expected and not up to their usual standard.. I wonder if they have changed their butcher? Had this not been my recent experience I wouldn't have hesitated in giving it 4 stars. I cannot fault he service, it is always very good. Not 100% keen on the new table layout, I preferred it how it was before with the bar on the other side. Otherwise great!

Each plate is well presented and every mouthful full of flavour. One of the best meals we have ever had and not over expensive. Service is very good but they still give you time to savour each course; the table is yours for as long as you want. There are several dining areas but we prefer to sit in the main area which used to be the bar. I have recommended the Fox and Goose many times - can't recommend it highly enough.

Very friendly and good humoured staff made us feel really welcome. 3 course lunch menu was excellent value. The menu had loads of lovely things on it, so it was hard to choose! Starter of goats cheese and salmon fish cake with chilli pickled courgette was amazing, as was the chocolate orange desert. When I asked about the chocolate orange before I ordered it, the waitress playfully said she can't tell me! It was delicious, but I will say no more to preserve the mystery! I was a little disappointed with the beef main, which lacked seasoning but was perfectly cooked. Good wine list and very reasonably priced. The whole evening and experience was, sadly, marred by the waitress in the restaurant upstairs who was downright rude and offensive to our friend, including referring to his previous visit thus 'I always remember the problem customers'. After finishing our meal we had a drink in the bar downstairs and reported our experience to the utterly charming member of staff who was serving behind the bar.I would certainly return as this is a fabulous restaurant but I would specifically ask that the young lady who was working in the restaurant in Friday 17th of June did not serve me.

I don't know who said that about the rain but we were so fed up with the constant downpours recently we actually checked the weather to find somewhere dry for a lunch.Fressingfield seemed to be the only place in East Anglia that was to escape yesterday so without booking we drove to The Fox and Goose visiting for the first time in about forty years. Are we glad we did. Brilliant welcome and friendly and efficient service. A pint of Adnams Ghost and a lime and lemonade for Mrs Tripper1941 while we selected from the interesting menu. Take a look on their site. We each had a different starter both decided on the superbly presented pork. We shared the F &G Chocolate Orange not really having room for it but wanting to test out at least one of the offerings. Nice coffee to round off with a couple of pieces of delicious fudge and honeycomb. Well satisfied with the bill and we kept saying to each other how we had enjoyed our lunch right up until bed time.So we will be going back really soon regardless of the weather and will certainly book before leaving as the place was being visited by diners who were obviously local and regulars.

Lunch or dinner at the Fox and Goose is always a pleasure - great food, great staff, almost fine dining at reasonable prices.Owner and Head Chef Paul likes to throw a few special events into his calendar, and in March my wife and I attended the fourth in a series of special menu evenings arranged over the past few months. This one was an Indian themed evening - unusual in as much as this is a British/Mediterranean style restaurant. As usual the service was great - our waitress Liz looking after all the diners in the upstairs main restaurant room having the special menu for the evening. The food was fantastic, if a little odd in places! Think US nouveau cuisine with French influence but with an Indian twang to it all. Not easy to imagine, let alone pull off.For my own tastes I think in some ways the food was not quite Indian enough, but as an eating experience it was well worth the effort and expense, which for the Fox and Goose was as usual very reasonable.

we first heard of the F&G when they catered for a friend's wedding, we thought we'd therefore try it when we moved to the area. It took some time but we decided to go for a Valentine's treat, which it wasn't! On arrival we had a Luke warm greeting, gave our drinks order & fairly promptly our food order, from there it seemed to slow down - we suspect that this was because we didn't order the taster menu. My starter & main were quite similar (Goats cheese and fish with what turned out to be a warm avocado smear - the only two things I could order being pregnant & allergic to citrus) and the second was not cohesive at all with prawns that were really quite rubbery. The foam 'bonus' canapé was nice though. My husband's food was much better than my own! He decided to have a dessert but having waited 45 minutes to place the order we decided to leave instead. Recommended to book as they seem to get mostly dinner parties when we have been in.Only negative it that it can be hefty on the wallet and doesn't have the biggest selection at the bar for ales etc due to space. On our last visit it was very nice but they must have a new head chef as he seemed very keen on pannacottas to be with the starters, dessert and appetiser between main dishes. The food was excellent with a good wine list. Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Happy, friendly face service - we will be back....

It was a nice first experience of this restaurant. It was pretty slow to be seated at 7-30 as there was a muddle with the birthday booking in front of us (don't know whose fault!), slow to take first drinks orders at table left us a little thirsty! Wine was good, if a bit heavy on the markup. Food was generally considered to be good, if not special. No fire lit--perhaps just as well as we would have been roasted!Tables pretty close to get max numbers in.Overall bill perhaps a bit on the high side for the dinner but would go again.

Love this place. Food is delicious. Service is excellent and very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. We are regular customers and it isn't unheard of to find our drinks on the bar as we walk in, if they have seen us park! Have had many lovely evenings here

Invited to a friends 50th at the Fox and Goose, we were in a party of 24 in a private but very comfortable separate dining room. A very warm welcome from all the staff who were obviously well trained and very capable of making the evening a pleasure. The food was delicious and as usual full of different flavours. Would recommend any to try the restaurant whether individually or in a party. We have been several times and on each occasion the food and service have been excellent

Our second visit to the Fox & Goose & I was sadden to see the decline. We were seated downstairs which was chilly despite the open fire and lacked any atmosphere at all. Seemed like we were the forgotten diners as the upstairs appeared to be where the larger parties were seated. During the dinner we were given two complimentary items, a parsnip foam with a meat fritter in the bottom of the glass or just a parsnip foam for the vegetarians and an apple crumble with vanilla custard. To be honest the crumble was by far the best dish of the evening. The courses we ordered we ok - nothing special and certainly not dishes that justified the high price tag. We had 3 courses each - one of the mains carried a £4 supplement, 1 side dish, 2 soft drinks, a tea & a coffee and the bill came to over £82! The whole establishment seemed tired & jaded, stairways in need of a paint & carpets tatty & cheap looking.Definitely not the same standard, quality or value for money we'd experienced previously. I wonder whether it just continues to trade of its old AA awards. All in all a sad disappointment.

There is a distinct lack of good restaurants in the immediate area and the Fox and Goose stands above anything else. The service is very friendly and efficient, the ambiance just right and food truly delicious. Well worth the cost and we are only sorry we live 10 miles away.

Many years ago the F&G was a favourite destination but due to a house move we hadn't visited for 9 years. The interior has changed dramatically, the ground floor is now wooden tables with a pub feel plus a private dining room being available too. (this had a party having a lovely time). Upstairs is the restaurant which we'd booked for Sunday lunch. The wood fire was burning in the grate, grand, lined curtains hung a the windows overlooking the church and our round table had wonderful linen. The Sunday lunch menu consists of starters, mains and deserts - 2 courses for £20, 3 courses for £25. There is a nice little upstairs sitting room to discuss and decide on menu choices. Whilst there is a F&G take on a Sunday roast there are also options of pheasant, fish and vegetarian. Well behaved children are accepted and catered for with smaller portions of the grownups plates, Homemade bread rolls were delicious and water was provided on the table as a matter of course (nice touch as you're out in the wilds and someone has got to drive). The mains were absolutely delicious, with wonderful flavours. The desserts were a wonderful selection of deconstructed mango cheesecake, treacle and pear tart and a chocolate and pistachio mousse, to name but three. On a bleak grey November day in the wilds of north Suffolk there were 23 people in the restaurant which tells you how popular it is. Good service, wonderful food and a snug restaurant setting. Make sure you book so you're not disappointed.

I'd heard very good things about the Fox and Goose and it didn't disappoint. Drinks and nibbles in the sitting room whilst we viewed the menu followed by a beautiful table in the upstairs dining area. So many new and exciting things to try - the menu is not for the traditionalist. Every dish was presented beautifully and was a delight to eat - goats cheese foam with celery popcorn - yummy. Sea bass with giant quinoa- exquisite and all the little extra's appearing between the courses. It's not the cheapest place I've visited but for a special occasion this is a great choice. Service was excellent too and what a lovely building.

We took friends for their first visit to the F & G, promising them good food in pleasant surroundings. They agreed. We all enjoyed the excellent food, good wine, and attentive service. As others have commented, this is a restaurant disguised as a village pub. Set in a picturesque Suffolk village, The Fox & Goose is a lovely building. The dining room is decked with white linen & the historic beams make for a wonderfully cosy feel. The cooking is assured, with excellent presentation, particularly for the starters, where the crockery strikes exactly the right balance of noticability, without the need for unnecessary fuss (I saw no slates or boards, which was a refreshing change). Our party of 5 all had the Sunday menu roast rib of beef which was beautifully tender, with crisp roast potatoes and voluminous Yorkshire puddings. The gravy was intensely powerful & flavoured - utterly delicious and indicative of a chef who really cares about the small details.A tip for fellow wine lovers at lunchtime, is to ask for the evening wine list - why do restaurants not just give you the full list? The Picpoul de Pinet was crisp and vibrant, matching very well with the range of starters. With the beef, the 2012 Jealous Sisters Pinot Noir, from Wairarapa,in New Zealand, was simply sublime - light, elegant but with depth of perfume & raspberry fruit. In fact, the whole wine list is well put together, clearly from a range of suppliers, which is a good sign, and like the general menu, offers good value, especially if you are prepared to go slightly 'off-piste'.My only note of caution was the service - don't get me wrong, everyone we came into contact with was friendly & hospitable, the young waitresses all being delightful and smiling. It was simply the service techniques that would benefit from training. The dining room, with its white linen, and quality of food, gives one the impression of fine dining, but the 'food show' on delivery grates slightly - it can be so easily rectified. The actual service of the wine really needs improving as well. Our bottle of Pinot Noir was simply 'plonked' on the table already open. I appreciate that this would matter not a jot to many people, but there is a correct way of doing things. The answer, of course lies simply in a focused course of training in service techniques - the welcoming attitudes are already in place. Once that is complete, the Fox & Goose will be truly exceptional, and then, perhaps the Michelin people should visit?

Set in a great old building the Fox and Goose is really just a restaurant with no real bar. The setting feels like you are eating in someones home, something I really liked but might not suit everyone. The atmosphere was really nice and the staff polite. Had the taster menu & enjoyed it, good quality ingredients cooked very well. Found there to be a generous amount of food as well compared to other tasters I've had. But that's not necessarily always a positive, we had 2 full desserts both with many elements & both were good 4 out 5 I'd say, but then I am a guts! & I could imagine it being a bit too much for some people, so maybe best to drop to 1 full dessert that's a real 5 out of 5 and add a simple palate freshening sorbet or light mousse type of thing. Maybe one or 2 of the earlier courses could have really blown me away also, I think to elevate themselves to the next level it probably just needs adding the wow factor, at least to some dishes. But please don't get me wrong there was nothing I had here all night that I didn't enjoy. This is clearly a well run place with people who care about standards both back & front of house and its in a nice setting as well, a well presented old building fitted out fairly modern & smart inside. Overall enjoyed the experience & would certainly go back.

A glorious timber framed building in the Suffolk countryside with unpretentious, lovely food. The menus are thoughtfully and imaginatively put together using local and seasonal produce. The Fox and Goose never disappoints. The staff are hard-working and attentive - and interested in their visitors. It doesn't matter if you come for dinner or for a more casual lunch, (especially good value), the friendly welcome is always to be relied upon. Yesterday we took friends there who had never visited the Fox and Goose before; they loved it. I see posters in the entrance now advertise the Fox and Goose 'On Tour', like some fabulous opera company; how delightful would that be for a grand celebration!

We ate dinner for four in the bar, which is essentially a restaurant in terms of comfort. Maybe the absence of a tablecloth is the difference between their bar and restaurant. All the dishes were excellent, whether from the bar or restaurant menus. Portions were medium sized, sufficient for us. Service was good and friendly. Good value at about £150 for three courses for four, with drinks. Busy, even on a Tuesday, booking recommended.

This is by no means my first review of the Fox & Goose, and I haven't written a review of every visit we have made, but I, my wife and a big gang of friends had such an enjoyable evening Chez Paul the other evening that I thought I should write at least one more review. As ever, the food, ambience and wine were all very good, but on this occasion I would particularly like the praise the staff. It is very pleasant, when looking at the wine list, and trying to jog one's memory, to be advised 'this is the one you usually have'. (And she was quite right - a good Malbec.) Also, when we left, in the rain, one of the staff kindly lent one of our party an umbrella to help us walk the few hundred yards back to our place. So, congratulations and thanks, yet again, for a great (and good vfm) night out!

I booked a last minute trip with my boyfriend and was looking for nice places to go for dinner near our hotel in brome, it was only because the 2 places recommended to me were fully booked that I booked here due to the good reviews. When we pulled up outside we were dubious as it didn't look like it would be particularly nice, how wrong we were! I am so glad we booked here, I cannot rate it high enough. The service was friendly and professional, the decor was bright and in keeping with the country feel and the menu was perfect. We ordered 3 courses and each course was exceptional, so full of flavour and the portion sizes were spot on. I really cannot speak more highly of this place and am so grateful that the other places were fully booked. I never write reviews but if it wasn't for the reviews on here I wouldn't have even known about this little gem of a restaurant, I highly recommend it!

3 mindblowing courses with amuses bouches to boot. Don't go if you want a massive pie and chips - do go if you want to eat amazingly cooked food.I have one small criticism. I don't drink, and they only have Bitburger Drive, which is undrinkably foul. They might consider linking up with The Alcohol Free Shop or similar, or stocking something like Maisel's Weisse, or Becks Blue.Make sure you order coffee - lemon fudge and honeycomb accompany - both made on site.

The food was acceptable but I was a little disappointed. I felt that finer details were missing, e.g. no ice or lemon in the water. I had the duck but would have preferred thinner slices. I have been to the Fox and Goose many times and the food is always excellent. The dining room upstairs is a very pleasant, spacious room, and the tables are large and in no way crammed in (if they were greedy they could easily fit in a few extra covers). However, the service can be somewhat eccentric these days, unlike when the proprietor was front of house before she left to have a baby. She always struck the right balance of friendliness and efficiency. I have two small recommendations, which would enhance the service to the level of the food served: first, the bill should presented in some sort of folder not just, as now, where a till receipt is plonked unceremoniously on the table; and second, in spite of the order often being taken in the ante-room, I still believe it would be possible for the serving staff to be aware of which diner is having which meal. This would avoid the current system of the waitress standing by your table, plates in hand saying 'Who's having the...'. This is poor at this level and smacks of a much lower level of eating establishment. These two small improvements would elevate the standard to where the 'Fox and Goose' belongs.

The owner of this place does not have a clue about running a business which includes giving polite, courteous customer service because she has none of these skills! Off hand, flippant and down right rude are skills she is good at. The staff they employ are inexperienced, ignorant and lacking any customer skills also. Asked if they could serve a flat white coffee they responded, “never heard of it” and when we asked what beer they had the waitress said one in a bottle with a red label and one with a blue label. Unbelievable! Overpriced and the food is very mediocre, we cook better and tastier at home. Never go again and would never recommend. Tip for owner, go on a management course to help your inexperienced staff and while there learn some customer service skills.
