This saddens me to send this but I am so upset with the quality of the Chinese food you have served to me today Monday 20th May. Sadly this is not the first time I have had a VERY sub standard meal from you recently.The food was always delicious full of flavour but time after time it’s now it looks awful & it’s flavourless bland ! & Expensive & just not worth it. 😡 I will no longer be buying a take away from yourselves as Lee Hings in Bedwell is far superior in all areas of value flavour & how it looks

Fantastic selection from Fortunes Place, we had egg fried rice, spring rolls, chicken and mushroom, sweet & sour chicken, house special curry. All spot on and very yummy. We're so lucky to have this takeaway in our area.

Food was cold, beef was fatty, was one of the best Chinese in Stevenage now one of the worst I’ve had, please get this back to the level it was before

Unfortunately ‘fortunes place’ has changed ownership recently. This used to be our ‘go to’ place for fish and chips and Chinese, unfortunately this will now change! We had fish and chips last night with some friends and the standards have dropped badly, whereas the batter used to be light and crispy and the fish white and flaky last nights batter was ‘oily’ (a pool of oil in the polystyrene) and it tasted of cooking oil, it was also hard in places, the fish was crispy in areas which was probably over cooked or been sitting there for some time. My wife’s batter on her fish was soggy (probably too much oil) and came away in the paper it was on. The chips again were oily and for some reason you get lots of small ones which can be very hard. We haven’t had Chinese recently but some friends of ours did and described it as “dry and no flavour”. What a shame.

Amazing Chinese & Amazing Chip Shop. Really flavourful and well cooked Chinese. Not greasy. One of the best I’ve had. And exactly the same for the chip shop side! Amazing fish, sausages (though no large ones), and chips! Best in Stevenage? Easily!!!

Best Chinese I’ve tasted in a long time. Fish and chips are really lovely, the portion size of the chips is large and their curry sauce is amazing.

I spent £8 on large cod & small chips and curry sauce, when I got home there was very little cod it had more batter then fish, I think they should call it a batter and chips shop, what ever become of the good old fish and chop shop.On the up side I have always found the Chinese food very good.

Best fish and chips I’ve had anywhere. Moved out of Stevenage 5 years ago and still go back for fish and chips, honestly never eaten better, not in a restaurant or at the seaside.

not gonna lie, Fortunes place is the heart of great Ashby.Curry sauce 10/10. Overall very decent takeaway

Chinese and English Take-Away only food. Have used for several years and never had a problem. Chinese & Fish n Chips always hot n tasty, average prices and reasonably quick.

Myself and my family live very near this fish and chips and Chinese.The fish and chips are always good along with every type of side.If I am being honest sometimes I do get a dodgy chip but 99% of the time it is all good. The Chinese is also very decent.

There has been a couple of time now I've ordered a large cod and they just seem to give you whatever is ready. Sometimes the cod is no bigger than a burger pattie despite ordering large. I did call up to enquire why I'd paid for a large cod and been given a small and I was just told 'sometimes we just use what is there' to which I replied and you still charge for a large regardless? YES apparently and i was told they would not do anything therefore I said I'd not return (normally go once a week) and the phone was put done after muttering something in Chinese.Having said that food is nice but the service is appalling. Disappointed

Love the Chinese here, I find some Chinese restaurant/take outs to be a bit greasy and oily however, this is not the case here. They also do a nice fish and chips. I would definitely recommend.

Regular visitor because of the friendly service but most of all the superb fish and chips they serve. I dont eat a lot of chips and they are happy to do me a kids chips which is maller than the standard chips and still too many. The Chinese food is great too.

We have used fortunes place for about 7-8 years. Friendly staff, helpful with menu if we decide to try something new And phone orders are always ready for collection at time stated. Friday and Saturday evenings are pretty busy so I would recommend phone ordering & collecting. Great food always.

As a former caterer of over 35 years in this trade in various locations around England, now and then I come across a Chinese Takeaway which in my opinion serves a good fish & chips/Chinese meals. Have lived in Stevenage for over ten years, gave Fortune Place a try as I was feeling lazy one Friday evening after a long day out shopping. Pleasantly surprised to find the fish & chips was perfect and the Chinese Special was tasty and hot when eaten at home. I am now a regular and each time I have not been disappointed with their meals.

I am a frequent visitor to this place. Great service friendly staff and good food value for money 👍👍

I nearly always use the Old Town Chinese which is consistently excellent but occasionally try others to see if they can offer anything different or even better. I’m afraid that this takeaway failed.

I used to love getting food from here, but they clearly can't cope with the volume of customers and orders. Over recent months I have stopped ordering the fish as it is grey, dry and over cooked. A few times the chips have been undercooked and tonight I ordered chicken nuggets for my son and when I got home they were not fully cooked and still frozen in the middle, won't be returning and feel very disappointed!!!

Excellent Chinese and also an offering of British fish & chips. Very fresh ingredients made each dish very enjoyable.

Great service - efficient and friendly. The ribs were fantastic. They must use a different recipe from many other places.

Had our Friday night take out from fortunes place, I have to say their cod is absolutely lovely and the batter is light and crispy . We really enjoyed our take out. Will definitely go there again

this Chinese and fish and chip shop is handy for locals. the fish and chips to me are better than the Chinese food. I usually like Singapore Fried Noodles however here they only offer Singapore Fried Chow Mien these always taste burnt as if they have been re cooked - not good

Food is good and cooked fresh. It can often be busy so recommend you phone order through for chinese it can be a good 1/2 hour wait.

Probablemente el mejor pescado y Chip comercios de la ciudad, siempre me dan mi pescado y patatas fritas desde aquí. Es excelente en todo. El pescado es una cena que realmente se quedó, y el bateador es siempre muy ligero, sabroso y fresco. Es un viaje de 10 minutos en coche para nosotros, pero es mejor que nuestro "fish and chips" (que por desgracia dejar la piel en el pescado). El lado izquierdo de la tienda también es una excelente comida para llevar china. Este lugar cuenta con una clasificación de 5 estrellas de la autoridad local.

Para llevar pescado y patatas fritas, además de china, pescado y patatas fritas siempre son fantásticas. China también es buena, su salsa de curry es preciosa y las raciones son enormes.

Serves both fish and chips and Chinese food. Fish and chips always excellent and portion size very good. Chinese food that I have sampled has also been excellent although more expensive than fish and chips. Would recommend food, and service from staff is always friendly and speedy. Try it you won't be disappointed .

Tried this place for the first time last night as our local Chinese takeaway was closed for a holiday. We ordered items from the menu stated to be 'thai style' as they sounded interesting. They weren't really thai flavoured but were nice and spicy. We also ordered sweet and sour king prawns - amazingly large portion and the prawns were huge and very fresh, nice 'bite' to them and not overcooked, the cost of this item was very reasonable as I've just bought frozen raw prawns for my freezer and they generally cost and arm and a leg! The food was nothing fancy but all well cooked and tasted fresh. Large portions for a reasonable price. We also had king prawns with noodles, again lots of prawns, obviously cooked from raw and very large definitely tiger prawns or similar. For a basic local takeaway it was just fine. Much cheaper than my local takeaway. Will try the fish and chips next time as the batter looked light and golden.

Used this place a few times for fish and chips and although the chips are always greasy it's not too bad.I Got food poisoning from fortunes place recently though and felt terrible for a week after buying a Chinese take away. I will never buy food from here again!

I've eaten both from here but will concentrate on the fish and chips. We've eaten from pretty much every fish and chip shop in Stevenage and believe that this is the best we've had, I tend to order a large cod as it usually means it will be cooked fresh and so it was here.The fish was cooked to perfection, white and flaky and just as importantly, the batter was crisp as it should be - unlike a few others I've tried recently. Chips were also good, well cooked and pretty tasty.It's a bit of a trek for us up to here from the Old Town but we'll return soon.

Fortunes Place serves average fish and chips and Chinese takeaway, It does what it says on the tin. Nothing spectacular but always good quality. If you want fish and chips or Chinese takeaway in Great Ashby you won't be disappointed.

So having new kitchen = several takeaways and nights out. Love this Chinese. Best by miles. Food hot, large portions and always tasty xx

Have eaten fish/chips from Fortunes Place a few times now... although the portions aren't as big/cheap as some fish and chips shops. The food was lovely! On the Chinese side, the food was really good too.

Definitely best Chinese TAKEAWAY in Stevenage without fail too bad they do not deliver, but none the less an overall good take away.

This place is amazing!The food is always of fantastic quality, great portions, the staff are lovely and friendly and reasonably priced.Trust me - it's the best of its type in the town. I'm lucky to live quite close - I would travel a fair way to get here otherwise! These guys run the V&V van that was in St. Nicholas a long time ago which delivered some fantastic food. This place really doesn't disappoint!

When I fancy a chinky this is where I prefer and I have been getting my fill from here for a few years now. Always good, fresh, hot with great service and acceptable prices. It's a Chinese with fish and chips. I don't get my fish and chip dishes here, but the Chinese is great.

We have been using this takeaway for some time now food is excellent staff always friendly and polite if you phone your order through it's always ready when you arrive

As above I have tried every Chinese take away in Stevenage and this edges them all. The way to go is order Thirty mins before required then go and pick up your food whilst grinning smugly at the people who didn't ring their order in packing out the shop. Special fried rice is my favourite along with king prawns with chilli and sea salt. Try it you will love it.

One of my favourite eating places never have any problems here recommend to anyone staff very friendly and always with a smile

This is by far the best chinese take away in Stevenage. I always phone orders through and pick up half an hour later or so. The place is almost packed with people waiting which in itself is a good sign. Staff friendly and polite and given the children fortunes cookies. I have been going here for years and always return. The chinese takes a while as all cooked to order but is worth the wait - my son tells me the fish and chips are great too. Would recommend.

Been going to fortunes place for 8 years now, never had a bad takeaway. The Chinese is superb the only downside is that it is so good that you have to queue on a Friday and Saturday night in particular, recommend that you phone your order over and then collect. Fish and chips are awesome as well, both freshly cooked again never had a bad one. Staff are always rushed off their feet but remain helpful and attentive. If you haven't already give it a go.....

I remember years ago when these guys used to function out the back of St Nicks shops in a Van. We used to look forward to going there every weekend, it was Stevenage's best kept secret. They disappeared for a while then opened the Fortunes Place in Great Ashby, and I am so glad they did, they deserve every success. The chow mein has lovely thick noodles perfectly cooked, not too greasy. The sweet n sour chicken balls are the biggest and most succulent I have ever had. Our favorite meat dish is the mixed meat (hot!) Expensive but worth it as a treat.9/10 the food is ready for collection in 20-30 minutes and when you arrive at the shop it is often full of people waiting for their order which just goes to show how popular it is.Just try it, you will thank me later.

Chinese food is all cooked lovely and even if it takes a while to get. It's all cooked fresh and tastes great!! Fish and Chips is also very good from here, not greasy and batter not thick like other places!

It was our first time-to have there food. We had the Chicken Satay skewers(4)-with sauce separate, Sweet and sour chicken balls(10), Chilli chicken, Egg fried rice, Chips, Oh and Battered Sausage. Well it was about £19.50, with free prawn crackers. Such great food and staff very helpful, never felt rushed to order. Waited about 15 mins. Will be going back again.

Very nice Chinese Takeaway, one of my favourite places to come to if I want some Chinese. The only downside I have is the food prices are a little on the expensive side, but apart from that it's a lovely takeaway I suppose you get what you pay for. A very enjoyable takeaway!

This place is always busy and it’s obvious why. The Fish and Chips are not too greasy, perfectly cooked, fresh (i.e. haven’t sat in the heater for hours or been re cooked) and the staff are efficient. They have a 5 out of 5 for food hygiene. The Chinese is delicious. Give it a go, you will not be disappointed.I’m surprised there are no other reviews on here to be honest. Maybe everyone is trying to keep it a secret.
