Fish'n'chick'n in East Hertfordshire

Delivery was half an hour late. Chips were cold and fish tepid. Chips were made up mainly from tiny bits of potato and very few proper ships. Supposed to be large cod but it was a joke. The driver was good, very apologetic and attempted to refuse a tip. When I phoned to ask where was the delivery, a woman was uncaring and rude. Never again.

Bloody rip off £4.50 for a bag of chips two sizes small or large which is regularly anyway. Never again. Two potatoes £4.50 outrageously over priced

Very greasy and small portions will be trying somewhere else in future not sure why it's gone down hill as it used to be fine

Fish not as good as it used to be, and what has happened to the size of the portions of chips they definitely shrunk in size, a lot! Will start using the fish inn again I think there fish is always so juicy, no bones at all and the size is huge compared to you guys now.

It’s good to support local businesses and have visited Fish n Chicken regularly over many years but have to say that portion sizes have shrunk significantly of late. The medium size cod that I was served today was like kiddie meal portion. Seriously must do better if you want to retain your customers!!

Cod & chips plus a gherkin £13.00 ??? Bye bye! 👋 This price is for one person, when i ordered and saw the 15 chips they she dished up I had to go for large. Proves that this is no longer a treat but a big lump sum out of my budget.

We have ordered from here a few times now as we live locally. It never disappoints! Always freshly cooked and never too oily. Food is always hot and Batter is nice and crispy. They have lots of choice on their menu, and a great childrens menu.

On-line ordering an absolute joke. don't bother using it, got order wrong, then lied on phone about ordering system working okay , when in shop they admitted it had got orders wrong earlier in the week. Queried what we had paid for-no chips- having paid for them. Had to go back to shop with original order to get chips (what sort of system do they have!)In shop the staff were okay (a little defensive) , by then the initial order had gone cold and they did not replace it! Will not be going back. Cannot recommend and would advise some customer service training for staff!! Would give minus/no stars if I could!!!

We decided to have fish and chips tonight, hubby went round to shop massive queue! but food cooked at a fast pace really nice cod and chips, could have been a bit hotter but getting better.. as we have had rubbish food in the past, food is now served in boxes and they can be recycled paper carrier bag provided as well which can also be recycled,, they are doing their bit for the environment. so well done on that score, you just need to make food hotter!!

Ordered by click and collect Medium cod and chips twice on Saturday. Both portions of chips were small and dry, looking like we had had the last of what was left. At £17 it needs to be better than that. Chinese from now on.

All the family of all ages enjoyed their food. Ranging from cod, to sausage in batter, to chicken (and chips and curry sauce). Food was nice and hot, not too oily, and delivered very quickly. Definitely recommend.

we decided to order a takeaway from here which we had not done before but because of the crisis at the minute we thought we would give it a go, i ordered it via their web site and hubby went to collect it, bloke was a bit abrupt when hubby tried to give him his order number NAME only was barked at him... meals were well wrapped and in a paper bag.. when we unwrapped them the grease was running off the paper and i thought oh no its going to be horrible ( as meals have been in the past from here) but the fish and chips were really lovely.. the only down side was they could have been a bit hotter.

OK, so deleted my original post from yesterday (Some of the original post below) but rewriting due to the fantastic response. After my review yesterday, Rob at Fish'n'Chick'n contacted me to apologise. He assured me steps would be taken and provided us with a more than generous credit, which was really lovely. My other half would have settled for a refund. I've personally been coming here since I was a toddler, and think the food is great. Most of the time (except the one situation yesterday from the person lacking customer service skills) the service is always excellent and delivered with a smile. ----- Tonight he placed our order and turned up a little early. No problem, they'll get it read and give him a call when it was done. They never called. When he went in to ask 20 minutes later, they told him his order was on the side. He asked what happened to them calling him to let him know? As he left, he left to "Oooh, moody!" from the woman he'd previously noted had an attitude. We've never had a problem with Fish N Chicken before, but come on, at least if you want to call someone moody because you didn't call someone as you said you would, at least have the decency to wait until he's left. It's a trying time for all of us, there's no excuse for the rudeness.

The chips sold here are nothing short of pure grit, shrapnel, debris or any other similar term you care to mention. The portion of chips for which you pay £2.40 is overpriced compared to the average locally. When it was pointed out to the staff member that there was a heap of grit in the portion they took it away to a supervisor and a few fresh chips were added. There was no apology or explanation for this overpriced rubble. This is not the first time the management have been told about their shoddy quality. Their website states "proper fish and chips, creating memories that last a lifetime". Mine will be to never darken their doorway again.

The Southern Fried Chicken used to be amazing, the machine that makes the coating broke and they still continued to hand make the coating which is now a batter, not Southern Fried, this is misleading to the customer and very expensive, I was sad to hear the manager say, ' I prefer it that way', is no excuse to sell what is not Southern Fried.... Really disappointed after 8 years as a loyal customer.

Tasteless cod, soggy batter and Luke warm chips, really disappointed to say the least. We tried this as Bishops fish and chips seemed to be closed on a Sunday.I knew we shouldn't be eating fish and chips on a Sunday, and I was right, avoid! Place needed a good clean to.

Knowledgeable staff,good hot food, make this one of the best around, the chicken is superb and there oap portions are very generous

We last visited this place in April & there was a great improvement in the quality of the fish & chips, but alas it's back to greasy pale looking shrapnel chips.It's a shame as the cod was well cooked & non greasy.The only consistent thing about this chip shop is the excellent polite service.But it's about time that a simple task of frying fish & chips from a fish & chip shop was right every time.

I used to use this place all the time and was in Thorley yesterday so thought we would get some. Anyway the service in the place was good and quick so we left to get home and enjoy our meal.Well once home and opened them up the batter on the fish was soggy and not crispy which made the fish taste horrible. The chips looked like the dregs of the day that had been floating around at the bottom of the chip pan all day!!!!I hope this is a one off because this used to have a really good reputation.

Lovely freshly cooked fish and chips, also offered chicken nuggets and joints, pork ribs saveloys and other add ons. Best of all they will sell you a small portion do just right for me.

It’s been around 9 months since we were last here & at last they serve reasonable sized non greasy chips with very little “shrapnel” & it was a good portion too.The fish is also much better, very tasty & with less grease on the wrapping it shows that this place is improving.The one thing that has never changed is the excellent service & so provided this improvement continues we will be back sooner rather then later.

Reliable friday night fish and chips nothing fancy if you want your friday night supper as it should be look no further = good curry sauce too

Chips were uncooked white and horrible charge to much ! Yuck what's happened to the lovely brown crunchy chip !! Staff were good though bless them

Went there for the first time in a few years for a take away. Ordered two portions of chips (large) and a haddock. The portions of chips were smaller than I expected for £2.85 a portion and somewhat greasy. The fish was small and also very greasy. Not worth the trip out. It was edible, but not the treat I was expecting. Expensive for what it was. See attached picture to show how much grease soaked into the cardboard trays.

Visiting longtime friends nearby we had a family feed of Cod & Chips The Cod was excellent ( stonking ) ! Hung over the dinner plates at home Fries R very good 2 Reasonably priced as well The large cod approx 6 pounds each,the medium 5 pounds each & the large fries < 3 pounds each Didnt disappoint Big thumbs up to this local eatery

Have now eaten two meals from this restaurant. The first consisted of five senior fish and chip meals, the second four senior meals. Both were take always, both were tasty and sufficient for us oldies. Tartar sauce provided together with paper napkins and a carrier bag in which to take the meals away. No complaints whatsoever about the meals, in fact we all enjoyed them.

We were desperate for a quick fish & Chips take away & should have learned our lesson as per previous experiences here & gone to Rumbles Fish Bar in Sawbridgeworth as we normally do.

We haven't had food from here for a while because we hadn't been happy previously. Wish we had learnt from our opinions last time. They have no idea how to cook chips, still limp and anemic, one of the easiest things to cook but they still can't manage too get it right. Won't be rushing back

It never disappoints, whether you go for fish or chicken and the chips ... these are always delicious!

Food is ok, Really really oily cod, is soggy by the time I get home. But the staff is always happy and smiling. Nothing is too much trouble for them!

Since i moved to Bishops Stortford in 2011, I have always bought my fish and chips from Fish n Chicken. The food is always consistent, and unique compared to the other chip shops in Bishops Stortford, and the staff are always friendly. Thank You!!Recommended Highly!

We are lucky to have lots of fish and chip takeaways in our area, but this one is perfect as it’s open on a Sunday night and the fish (usually chose cod or haddock) and chips are always excellent. You can park directly outside the shop. Perfect for all tastes as there is a varied menu, so not just fish!

We use this fish and chip shop regular and must say a good service and great selection of food. Good selection of fish, pies , chicken,rids and not forgetting mushey peas

Easily the best Chippy around, consistently good, it’s always busy so all the food is freshly cooked and they have plenty of staff at their busy times which means even when the queue is out the door (often is!) you get served quickly. Plus it’s easy to park close by if not right outside....

Sometimes, just walking past and getting the pungent whiff of frying oil is enough to deter even those with strong constitutions, but if you're a fan of rather oily typical English fish and stodgy chips (a prerequisite for all similar establishments) then this place offers satisfying fare. Perhaps any criticism is more about the Philistine eating habits of the British public, who seem to like this sort of stuff. Maybe I'm after a bit more finesse...

Always a stop off for half roast chicken and chips on those "can't be bothered cooking" days; great chicken, lots and lots of chips, there's a reason why it gets busy!

The service is always great here & whilst it's been quite a few months since we've been in a hurry & desperate enough to give this place another try the chips never improve.

We tried this Takeaway as its the same company who own Churchill`s in Stansted Essex, but Churchill's has gone down hill.

Este pescado y chips es en mi opinión uno de los mejores de la zona. La calidad de la comida y un buen servicio. También hace un tiempo, día en pescado y patatas fritas, incluso, como descubrí hoy, Domingo.

Calidad consistente y una amplia selección de opciones. He tenido un par de soportes para pobres de costillas (seco), pero teniendo en cuenta que ordenar tal vez una vez al mes durante años no puedo quejar. El único comentario negativo es el aumento constante de los precios hace que una comida para dos adultos y dos niños en crecimiento casi tan caro como llevar asiática u oriental que pudiera suponer el pescado y patatas fritas siendo la última opción.

Este es chino para llevar bajo una nueva dirección. Parece razonable la comida, aunque quizás no es tan bueno como antes. Hasta ahora no se ha reabierto el restaurante.

No vivo en Bishops Stortford, pero decidimos hacer el viaje corto cada vez que apetece pescado y patatas fritas. En la línea de casi viernes va a la puerta y sin embargo el servicio es siempre rápido y no tienes que esperar mucho tiempo. Buena comida, excelente servicio y excelente relación calidad-precio. Bien vale la pena el viaje.

Have been to this Fish and Chip shop many times as it is a short distance from where i live . The Chips are Excellent and in my view the best in town ,the fish is always very fresh and everything else is always well cooked and always hot .My only complaint is much as i love Cod it always has a few bones in and there is no need !

After reading the last two reviews on TA &amp; in a hurry we decided to give this chip shop another go despite our previous unhappy experiences here. What a huge mistake this was as the chips are still skinny &amp; small with loads of shrapnel like chips mixed with them. Where are the thick old school chips that i read about on TP as they have never appeared whenever we have given this fish and chip shop another try ?We had the fish which on previous visits had improved in cooking and quality and remained the same good quality. It’s just the chips that we have an issue with &amp; so once more it’s back to Rumbles Fish Bar in Sawbridgeworth who know how to cook &amp; deliver fish &amp; decent size chips to their customers.On the plus side the staff are always polite and efficient, but please, please, please, adjust your potato cutter to cut a decent size chip if you want return customers.

Food and service is excellent the best in the area worth every penny.Crispy tasty golden brown batter fresh tasting roe and cod. Chips are proper old school chips nice and thick. Also paying my card I have no excuse to stop once a week

The only place that I would go to for my fish &amp; chips. Never had a bad meal from here. The staff are very efficient even when there is a queue out of the door which quite often happens!

This chip shop used to be fairly good, but of late it has seen a decline in service and quality of food. The chips are just awful, inconsistent and way over priced for what they serve. I've decided I will never use them again.

Served by a lad called Tobe on his name badge, nice guy. Had 2 pie &amp; chips and sausage in batter and chips, hot and fresh, tasted good, speedy and parking right outside. Nice little treat!

I was so hungry that I could have eaten a horse that evening. Was ever so slightly disappointed though by battered cod fish quality but their chips were very good

Have used this place for years. Service is always quick and the display cabinets are always well stocked with freshly cooked food which is of a very high quality.

We don’t often get fish and chips takeaways (or similar) and its been two years since we last visited this fish and chip shop but following the last seven out of eight reasonable reviews on Tripadvisor we decided to give it a go once more.Sadly the chips although not greasy were still skinny with shrapnel like chips and not decent sized chips as sold elsewhere.To be fair the fish and mushy peas were great this time, but surely this chip shop can adjust their potato chipper to cut decent size chips to accompany them.The service is always polite and good and so it’s a shame that a fish and chip shop can’t serve up decent sized chips and forces us to look elsewhere once more.I have given this place a poor rating (and not terrible as before) solely because although the fish was good the chips still haven't improved since our last visit.Sorry but we won’t be back and the short trip to Rumbles Fish Bar in Sawbridgeworth is definitely worth it where we can get decent size chips without so much shrapnel together with their other good menu food and snacks.

Good value and great food just get in early at the weekend as always long queues.I do find the chicken nuggets vary regularly which isn't great when the kids don't like fish but not had a problem in a few weeks.

This place can be judged by the queues that are always there. Service is fabulous and although I'm not a great fish and chip lover this food is not greasy. Wonderfully cooked.

Ordered 5 cod and 3 chips for the family for my daughters 21st. They were freshly cooked, the chips were crispy as was the fish. The cod was succulent and perfectly cooked. Brilliant. Thank you xx

This place used to be the best around and had a family feel about it - sadly I think it has got a little worse as the years have gone by and the prices have increased noticeably.Its a bit hit and miss when you ask for a large cod as sometimes you end up with the same size piece of fish as a medium.Chips are a bit hit and miss alsoOk if you want a quick take away

Not a bad fish and chip shop at all. Though they could be a little more generous with their 'large' portions. I can recommend both the cod and the battered sausages.

I think that this is the best fish and chip shop in the town. We live the other side of the town to the shop but consider it worth going there for food Chicken are ribs are great as well.

Usually a good experience, today however I ordered a quarter of chicken breast which I was told would be a forty minute wait and it was only 6p! My friend noticed the girl who served us for some reason gave me chips then when we said we didn't order chips she walked off to put them back mumbled something to her mate and came with a sullen look on her face. Basically I felt I was to blame for her mistake! If you don't order something you don't want it and how would she know the size of the chips to put on the order if I didn't ask for them in the first place??? This all may of been ok if it wasn't for the attitude of the staff member. Very poor and this was at the start of the evening at 6pm. Feel sorry for the rest of the evenings customers.

Always good here. I prefer pie and chips but the fish is very good and tasty. Large chips can be medium, large or very large depending on who serves you. If they don't offer you mushy peas or barbecue sauce it's free. Ample parking outside in Sainsburys car park.

Lovely fish and chicken take away. Would recommend the half chicken with free chips. Great value and lovely seasoning. Always hot

As a takeaway once in a while i love this place. The ribs are amazing, the chips are really good most of the time. Curry sauce is pretty good to. Glad its only round the corner to me.

Sometimes the food is excellent, but very often not. I have had dehydrated overcooked fish which clearly has been in the heater too long, Undercooked chips and poor portion sizes. A large cod is very often charged for what is clearly a medium.

This is normally our choice place for fish and chips but need to find another.. Chip portions have diminished drastically and the curry sauce is like flavoured water. The food was wrapped so quickly that there is no chance of receiving salt or vinegar.

As a takeaway you can't beat it. On a Friday night the queue reaches outside the door, curling inside the shop as well. They always seem to have what you ask for and the staff work very hard but they must get fed up asking if you want mushy peas or curry sauce to every customer. So if this is a complaint it's only meant on behalf of the girls serving.

Except this is not being said by Precious Little from Come Fly With Me, filmed just up the road in Stansted Airport. This is on a Saturday night at 7pm and they have sold out of half the things I ask for, only downside for the staff is that they are not allowed to go home early and close the shop but continuing to serve with empty warming displays and only the basic fish and chips. Pity too that Molly charged me for an extra portion of large chips that did not appear in my carrier bag when I got back home. So few people get what they want and then we are short of chips and overcharged to boot. Shame the manager has not got the brains to run this place properly when there are simple logistics involved, especially on the busiest night of the week.

We were visiting relatives in Bishops Stortford and decided to try their lunch fish and chips special. The service was wonderful and quick. The fish was fresh, hot, and well cooked. The chips, although not crispy, were well cooked. I even had vinegar on mine.Yes, the paper wrapping around our meal did have excess grease, but both items were deep fried, so what do you expect? We enjoyed the meal and would eat there again.

We really should have learned our lesson by now and avoid this fish and chip shop which we visit only when we are desperate.The majority of our chips were like shrapnel and very soggy &amp; greasy, the batter on our fish was greasy (on our last visit early this year the fish was ok) and by the time we got home the wrapping paper was soaked in grease once more.The chips here are the worse we have ever eaten and would advise to go elsewhere where they know how to fry a decent chip.The young girls serving are very polite which is the only positive thing i can say about this place.

A really nice fish &amp; Chip shop, plenty of variety and all good well with decent size portions. All the staff are friendly and offer a professional service.

About once or twice a year we try the fish &amp; chips from here but are always disappointed with the chips, the bulk of which are small or are like shrapnel.The fish and the sausages are ok but the chips here always seem greasy and not crisp as they should be and as i said the majority of the chips are small. By the time i got them home the wrapping paper was soaked in grease, but fortunately they were in a carrier bag saving my clothing.It's not rocket science to fry decent size chips that are not too greasy.

This fish &amp; chip shop in Bishop's Stortford had been recommended to me as the best Fish &amp; Chip shop near Sawbridgeworth.The two young girls who were serving were very pleasant and helpful but one said something about curry VERY quickly and incomprehensibly.I bought medium cod and chips. While the fish was quite nice the chips were VERY soggy and greasy. The grease soaked through the wrapping paper and several sheets of other paper onto my trousers.Good chips are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. These were just sad and soggy.Neither the Fish nor the chips were as hot as I would have wished. I would prefer my food to be freshly cooked while I waited rather than taken from a pile that had been cooked earlier and kept warm.All in all I was VERY disappointed.I shall NOT be going there again.
