Since Carley's Fish & Chips changed ownership, the once beloved eatery has significantly declined. Prices have soared to unreasonable levels, while portion sizes have drastically reduced, leaving customers hungry despite paying a premium. Adding insult to injury, customers have to pay extra for even a drop of any sauce, a stark contrast to the generous condiment policies of other local shops. The new owner's peculiar and unwelcoming demeanor further detracts from the experience, creating an awkward atmosphere that drives away long-time patrons. Until these issues are addressed, it is advisable to seek better options elsewhere in town.

The ultimate test of a product or service business is coping with a mistake. We had an order not to the usual high standard of our fav chippy, so mentioned it the next day and the folk at Carley’s owner and staff Vicky could not have been more helpful. Replacement meal was superb and the team were so nice. Carly’s is a gem. Get your fav fish and chips here. Superb

Called in this evening with a few hungry cricketers making their way home to Northamptonshire. Lovely crisp batter and excellent piece of haddock. All well cooked, everyone was impressed by the quality

Do not order from this fish and chip shop. I currently have severe food poisoning since eating here. I believe the battered sausage may of caused this as my partner had cod and he feels fine. I have been vomiting violently since 5am this morning and also have other systems. The food clearly wasn’t reheated properly.

The two ladies that work on a Friday night are fantastic. Always happy to see you, chatty and jolly. Foods fantastic. Always happy with our dinner from here.

When it first changed owners it was lovely! However, now I find it very hit and miss. We had it last night, the chips were awful and so was the sausage. Such a shame as a takeaway in these times is a treat for families!

One of the best chips I’ve eaten, top quality so crispy and soft in the middle. This is the second time I’ve come here. Had to stop again today to grab some lunch. Better then any restaurant I’ve had chips in. Nice to see real traditional chips like we used to get in the good old days. Nice friendly staff.

I have been searching for a decent fish and chips shop for years! This place is the only place I have found that does the chips perfectly, has a wide range of menu items and tastes so good. Customer service and food are a cut above the rest. Soo happy I’ve found them. Would highly recommend.

Carly's has recently added more non-fish items to the menu. I tried the spicy chicken wings and they were amazing! The breading remained crispy and intact even with the leftovers. The spice is proper spicy and well-seasoned. They beat a lot of the established chicken places hands down!

This chippy is class - always a great portion of fish, friendly staff and quick as you like. Only slight downside is the £10 minimum spend on card which most other establishments got rid of a decade ago. But overall this is only a very small downside to a great chippy!

Good fish but was conned and over charged for a bit of fish and curry sauce when I asked specifically for fish and chips with curry sauce.

Food good. Portion sizes good. Ordered for collection was late but they offered a drink. Good customer service

Another good meal from Carly’s last night, the scampi was nice and crisp on the outside, the cod was beautifully cooked and flakey, the mushy peas and the chips hit the mark too. We have f&c once every two months or so, and Carly’s never disappoints.

Have used carleys many times but on this occasion it wasn't very nice haddock was dry and overcooked and the chips were under cooked, some were raw in the middle, very disappointing considering how much it cost.

My last visit the chips were under cooked and tasted awful,I thought I would try it again give her the benefit of the doubt but no change instead the chips were all bubbly for 2 reasons old chips being reheated or she is trying to save money by not charging the oil either way not impressed,I don't carley is cut the be in this sort of business she should stick to hairdressing or something

Bone dry chips. Over cooked fish cake. Had to throw half of it all away.

Went at around 4pm today for an early tea. Haddock was very nice and quite large. However, the chips were clearly re-heated leftovers, probably from lunchtime. Maybe if we went at a busier time and were given freshly cooked chips they would've tasted better but they were just so dry which completely ruined the meal. First visit and wouldn't rush to return. On the plus side, place looks clean, friendly staff and easy parking.

When I customer asks for salt and vinger then please put salt and vinegar on the chips!!!!!!!

Always get my cod from here because usually they are good but just bought sausage in batter and chips, chips are cold and the batter on the sausage is thin burnt and overly greasy! For £4.60 this is an absolute rip off! What a shame!!

Great food, always hot and fresh. Their batter is the only one I can eat, others are fatty or make me bloat. Lovely staff. We have fish & chips every 2 weeks and it's the best.

There is a minimum payment of £10 to pay by card, we only wanted two portions of chips but they insisted and said we could take out cash from a nearby co-op. I can’t imagine in this day and age how any business could insist on only accepting cash unless you spend more, especially as businesses have a responsibility to encourage contactless payments to keep people safe from covid. Not only this, but the chips are very mediocre and half of the portion was just scraps. We had to get fish cakes in order to get the order over £10, but regrettably they were bland and generic. It was a really disappointing experience after seeing the positive reviews.

The family decided on a quick lunch, with F&C the order of the day. Carley's was recommended, and I have to say that it was great. We ordered two different fish, chicken nuggets and lots of chips, and it was all superb. The fish was huge, fresh, well cooked, well battered and simply delicious, whilst the chips were simply great. Very highly recommended.

Staff was very welcoming and friendly with smiles on their faces. Food was fresh, delicious and perfect. The hygiene levels were exceeding standards with no fault. Overall very impressed and will be coming back to get more tasty food.

Always been bit hit and miss but recently had an excellent spell setting them apart from all others in area with amazing well cooked fish and chips. However sadly seem to be back to sub standard old ways - last four weeks or so have been very poor, tiny portions of what seem to be re-heated chips, such a shame because they have shown they can be so good, not sure what’s gone wrong but it has in epic pro’portions - excuse the pun was intended!

Overall very good. Generally the chips are very good and the fish very good as well, they also do pies and mushy peas. The staff are nice. I would have awarded it five stars but the food can be a bit inconsistent, some days the chips might not be crispy, but never bad.

I phoned carley’s to pre order my food. I spoke to a polite man who told me my order number and gave me a time to collect my order. When i arrived, there was good social distancing in place. There was a queue to the left and people waiting for their order to be given on the right. The staff were good at directing the customers to maintain social distancing and only allowed a couple of people in at a time since their shop is not big. The queue went down promptly. I told them my order number and they took payment and told me to wait outside while they wrap my order. It only took them a couple of minutes before they called my order number and my food was ready. When i got home and unwrapped the food, it looked great. All the family enjoyed it. The portions of chips are very generous and love that they double cook their chips. My fish was crispy and the batter was light. Overall we really enjoyed their food. We will be making this our new regular chippy

First visit today, mainly because they're open Monday lunchtime. Reasonably happy with the meal - chips are not bad, not the best I've had, but passable. Reasonable value for money, but do need to up their game on social distancing. The customer area in the store is small and there's no control as to how many can enter. Will be back again.

Bit fan of fish and chips and this is one of the best for a quick bite. We tend to go twice a month and food is always consistent. Our tip: call ahead to beat the queue, especially if they need to cook your order (scampi, skinless fish, etc)

I find this place a bit hit and miss. I have had some nice takeaways from here but also had some not so nice meals. Chips can taste overcooked and a bit oily at times, other times they’re great.

No consideration for key workers I was there at 21:00hrs but would not serve me.

Never been to this place before but just had the best fish and chips ever. The chips were golden brown and crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle and the fish had a lovely light batter and the cod was very fresh. Well done to the new owners I would recommend and will visit again

We had cod and chips today, the first meal that wasn't home-cooked since a couple of weeks before lockdown. It was well worth the wait. The chips were crispy but fluffy, the cod was creamy with lovely brittle batter. Absolutely perfect. Thank you very much. It won't be four months before we go again.

This place used to be the best for fish and chips. However, in the last year it has been overtaken by new management. The new staff seem to make the extra effort when it comes to cutting corners. So a year ago, I went for my usual, this time it was disgusting, the fish skin was soggy and black and the batter was flavourless. A few weeks later I thought Ill try the cod, I've had better from Birsdeye. So after avoiding them for a few months I decided to give them another chance and get a burger, there was no salad (despite specifically asking for it), no sauce (again asked for burger sauce), and there appeared to be half a slice of cheese, on one half of the burger. I highly recommend avoiding this place unless you aim to be disappointed.

The batter is light and crispy, service quick and efficient, prices are excellent.

Wow, what can I say. The fabulous team at Carley's provided suppers for 190 people and managed to deliver hot and tasty food which is no mean feat when catering for such large numbers. They also stayed to help us serve which was much appreciated. The quality of the food and their professionalism means we would not hesitate to use them again.

I’ve always found Carleys to be a very good chippy. Now they’re under new ownership and they’re even better. Perfectly cooked fish and lovely chips. The mushy peas and curry sauce are always on point too. Great value too.

Friendly staff, nice food and reasonable prices.

Have been visiting Charley’s regularly for many years. We have a large family, generally spending over £30. When l arrived last night was surprised not to see a queue out the door. Not one of the regular staff were working, presuming the place has been taken over. Placed my large order, noticed the hopper for chips was almost empty. When I got home was very disappointed with small chip portion , we normally order three large and that is more than enough for all of us, it was also full of little bits of chip that were overdone. Couldn’t believe that they had served us up these little scraps of chips that were left.The fish was overdone, very dry, The haddock had gone off ! my son immediately spat it out , it smelt awful. Most of my £30 order was in the bin!I did phone the management, they were very polite and seemed concerned, I did have difficulty in understanding what the gentleman was saying, slight language barrier.I get the impression that they are trying to save money, this new approach will clearly cost them a lot of custom. I will give them another try next week, if the portions are stingy, and quality not up to its previous excellent standards it will be my last ever visit.

Used to be lovely, since new ownership chicken burger now doesn't taste of anything, same with the chips. Staff look very stressed. Sadly don't think we will be going again, we used to love this place!

So much improvement here; the "old guard" were good, (but sometimes a bit unreliable for quality), but now you'd struggle to beat this so far away from the seaside. Exceptional quality fish, good chips, friendly service. Worth putting yourself to go to if in the Hertford area. We need look no further for our fish suppers! Nice one .. keep it up!(Tip : they'll willingly cook you your fish fresh while you pop round to the Golden Griffin for a quick gargle!)
