Fisherman's Cot in Mid Devon

Friendly staff. I arrived late but I was welcomed and ordered food as I checked in. Food was good bar clean and the bedroom was comfortable

The fish and chips I had was good - and the service was faultless. But the menu has so few healthy options. I really struggled to choose something lower in calorie, lower in carbs and just generally better for me. I’d have preferred a salad, but only one salad was available and that had fried, crumbed (schnitzel style) chicken, rather than regular grilled chicken. The menu just isn’t geared up to support anyone trying to lose weight or eat healthily. It all seemed very classic pub grub which means that I won’t return. It’s a shame, because the location is great, right on the river, with a big car park - and only 15 mins from home. How about just making a classic chicken Caesar? Or creating some kind of fresh, Buddha bowl type salad?

Came as a group of 7 for my husband's 70th birthday celebration. All the staff, particularly the very friendly waitress we had who had blonde bobbed hair. The surprise birthday cake was brought out after the meal as requested. Thanks everyone. We will be back again soon.

The new menu has lots of new options to choose from but some favourites still on there but with improvements. The food was fantastic and very hot. Staff were lovely and friendly and made sure our visit was enjoyable. We will definitely be back!

Waited 15 minutes to be booked in and nearly half hr for someone to take our orders. And along time for our food to arrive. Food was disappointing we had hunter chicken never had had breaded chicken on a hunter chicken before it was terrible. Had garlic bread it was cold and the four small slices not worth the the money. The lamb was shameful one small piece of lamb. l did complain and they did take the price of the hunter chicken off the bill. Very expensive for what you get.the food and service has gone down hill from the last time we was there in January 2025.

Nice location for a meal and food good too

Nice food, reasonably priced and there's usually an offer like 30% off mains. Service was very good.

We booked to stay the night, arriving at the busiest time on a Sunday afternoon. Big thank you to Lillian who made us feel so welcomed despite being so busy. Lovely view, great room, good food and above all fab staff.

Beautiful pub next to the river. We were Sat by an open fire eating dinner with exceptional service.

Beautiful place, staff are friendly and polite, food however, is basic food that is overpriced in my opinion. Not really seasoned at all, I barely got quarter of my pot filled with tartar sauce which yet again didn’t really taste how tartar sauce should. Love the scenery which would be the only reason to come again for drinks but not to eat food. My family thought the same when it came to food.

Me and my wife got lost in the country and stumbled across Fisherman's Cot by accident and what a happy accident it was. Beautiful scenery, friendly staff and good quality meal.

We had a great meal and cocktails in the restaurant on Friday evening and a good night's sleep afterward. The veggie breakfast on Saturday morning was also delicious. All the staff were lovely, so helpful and made our stay very enjoyable.

Fantastic location, stunning river and comfortable room. There are areas that need a little tlc but that did not take away the fact we had a lovely stay. The food was disappointing for the price!

Went for Sunday Lunch. Great selection of meats, food was very tasty. Robert, the server, was really polite and friendly. Made a special effort for our daughter's 6th birthday. Will be returning!

I have stayed here twice sleeping in my microcamper with my dog. Always a friendly welcome and breakfast is a real treat! The river and garden is lovely to relax in. Definitely stay again soon!

Came here for valentines with my wife and 2 kids. It was lovely. The view is very nice and the food was amazing. Kids loved it and my wife was happy which is always a plus (lol). But would highly recommended it and will definitely be going back there. Don't miss out!!

We had a room booked out for a party and also booked 2 rooms to stay. 1 double and 1 family. Everything was great. Food, atmosphere etc.. the only thing I would say that let it down was the bathroom floor in the family room. It looks dirty, it should be changed. Staff absolutely fantastic. Really appreciative of their friendliness and helpfulness.

I had booked a table and the next day wanted it to be in front of the fire. So, I rang and was greeted by a lovely lady of West Country extraction who very easily changed it for me and called me darling. Some might disagree with her friendliness, but I welcomed it! She made me feel wanted, and part of the experience of dining here, and her friendliness was infectious: I found myself warming to her immediately. When arriving we were greeted by Ben, who also made us feel very welcomed, and who showed us to our table, chatting all the while. I felt as though we had only been away from here for a very short time, when in reality it was over twenty years, but Ben made us feel like old friends Beer selection is good, with three real ales, possibly four, a few lagers, and some ciders, and The Campaign For Real Ale rates this establishment highly, as do I. Cool, crisp, well rounded beer was easily quaffed. Josh, a proud young Welsh man, entered into conversation with me about the state of the WRU (14 games without winning!) and being a proud Englishman I thanked him for not putting out their first team when they play us at Twickenham! He was a first class barman, and entertaining to boot! Our table by the fire was also by the window, and the view of the C15th pack bridge, wide enough for only single traffic was delightful. In the summer there are numerous tables outside, overlooking the river, and I can imagine a nice meal and glass of wine while scratching the mozzie bites!😳. We were impressed by the food, but sadly our first choice had run out. No need to panic, we chose another dish and we loved it! It was great food, flying the standard for quality bar food, and not a hint of ponciness or chefi-ness in sight. We've had a great time here, enjoying the atmosphere despite it being quiet for a saturday. Staff were lovely, food was great, views were wonderful, and they have rooms should we want to make a weekend of it. Thanks guys, you made our day!

This is our second visit in two months, just to see if it was as good as the first. This time was a lunchtime visit, quit empty at this time, so the service was excellent as the food. I think we will call this one of our local places to eat out, as new to the area.

Severely disappointed after a meal yesterday evening. Had been before many years ago and the meal was brilliant so I had high expectations - non of which were met last night. Service was the worst id experienced in a long time. Multiple staff walked past and ignored us while we were waiting to be seated, we sat for 20 minutes waiting to order and it took us asking twice to get our first drinks. Food was okay but had clearly been sat under a warm light for a long time as it was dry and tasteless. Staff were rude and unapologetic. We will not be returning or recommending The Fisherman's Cot to anyone

An OK pub with quite nice food that occasionally (perhaps depending on the cook) isn't so great.

We came in Sunday 2/2/25 and the carvery was lovely. However, the ladies toilet was out of order, men’s leaking and disabled lock wasn’t working and no toilet rolls. It is a big premises and one toilet for women and disabled men/women is bad. The wall near where we sat was crumbling and there was food up it. I think it needs more toilets and a general good old paint and clean. Then it will be a much better environment to eat in. That said: hats off to the friendly staff and the chefs

In all The years I’ve been eating out. I’ve never had such bad service. We felt invisible. We sat down. 30 mins later we had to find some one to take our drinks order. Then when it arrived it was put on another table. So 30 mins later they found our drinks. When we eventually was asked for our food order ( we’ve been there an hour already ) Half the menu was not available. The food arrived. And was ok. We then waited for a member of staff to order a second drink. No show. So went to the bar After we had eaten our main meal We sat around for a further 40 mins for a desert Menu. All the staff just disappeared and so I finally went to the bar to ask. And was told the chef had gone home So we decided to pay the bill and go home and never to return. Shame really. It was our anniversary meal. Me and my wife had our first date there I mentioned to the staff our concerns and they didn’t seem interested. We never moan about service. But it was so bad. Even other tables were moaning. And the pub wasn’t even busy. Eating out isn’t cheap anymore. So when we do go out we just expect not to be invisible. Oh well. It’s another £90 in your Till. You may not see this feed back. Maybe we are invisible online also Thx Philip Thurley.

Great location ,terrible food ,used to be a regular meetup place for us but no longer,foods just awful every time and we need to stop saying let’s give it another try at one point and this last meal would deffo be enough reason to not come back.

Booked 3 rooms through central reservations for a mini family reunion. Great welcome and check in, lovely room (18), nice and warm and bedding soft and fluffy! Six of us dined in the restaurant and then moved to the bar. Food was great, and we had a lovely evening, nothing was too much trouble for the team on duty. Fantastic experience, we will definitely be back! Thank you!

Today we went for lunch the lasagne was OK but the side salad was dismal only a bit of rocket and a lettuce leaf ! Not even a piece of tomato or an onion ring. My husband had very dry fish and very wet batter and chips obviously cooked from frozen , fortunately we had 30% off so didn't feel it was quite such a rip off as if we had paid the full price !! Not sure we'll return shame as we do live locally..

Great location nice pub and friendly staff. Unfortunately, since the last time I was here the food has gone downhill, and the price has gone up. Food was basic pub food. Not to bad but could do with some improvement. We would definitely be back for a drink or 2 but probably not for food unless they improve.

Excellent food both carvery and main menu. Service attentive and efficient

Food was ok and location great, service fine as it was busy. Booked a pre-ordered Christmas dinner for the 15th of December, paid the deposit (£25/£5pp) Drinks ordered never came so got them at the bar so was double charged, queried the bill at the time but had already processed the card. So waived tip in lieu of overcharge serving staff could deal with it if wanted. Noticed credit card statement later for the £25 deposit, and as expected not deducted from the bill as stated it would be on the order confirmation. Regularly come for the carvery on Sunday, will certainly check the bill in detail if I go again.

We came here for Christmas day as a party of 8. The meal was stunning along with a fantastic atmosphere and joyful staff who were bubbly and fun. We were attended by Jo who was excellent ! We will 100% be back. The chefs did a great job too. Thanks for making our family Christmas great !

Unfortunately this pub was able to do what no pub I have ever known has been able to do; we had a 5 mile walk and were very much looking forward to a nice pint at the end. Somehow, they managed to screw up even this which is a feat in itself. The pub was busy with big family groups who at least appeared to be having a nice time -We ordered a pint of Guinness each upon arrival but this tasted a bit watered down and service was slow at the bar. Our family then arrived to meet us for a quick pint and it went further downhill from here. We went to the bar to order 4 drinks and a packet of crisps, paid for these only to be told that none of the taps were working and the girl serving us (or “someone”- her words) would come and tell us when the taps were back on so we could collect our pints. In the meantime I began eating the crisps which were stale despite a BBD of April 2025. We waited for a few minutes (the same girl walked past us looking directly at us during this) before deciding we did not want to wait for substandard pints so went to ask for a refund. This took about 5/10 minutes to wait for one of two managers who then refunded me the full amount without any issue; I was prepared to argue my case if need be but perhaps all the fight has gone out of them if the staff have to do this very often? I asked if the taps were working again and the first girl said they were (but she had not bothered to come and tell us this). It’s unfortunate as the pub is in a lovely setting and could be great if only more effort was put in- I’m told by family that the food is also inedible and when we initially wanted to sit outside to get views of the river we noticed lots of rubbish around the tables, there was also a sticky residue on the tables inside and outside. Would not bother again and will just go to Bickleigh Mill if we want a walk and pint combo next time.

We had a lovely Christmas Day lunch. The food was good, served hot and with a smile!! We were very well looked after all timed to perfection without being rushed.

Very poor food quality for Christmas Day meal, Yorkshire puddings were greasy. Service was slow. Had to keep asking where our food was. Not enough staff. For what we paid for the food we were so disappointed. Desserts just tasted like out of a packet from tescos. Ice cream tasted of nothing. Will not be back again for Christmas Day.

We were made to feel very welcome by the team. Service was superb! Especially Jo, she was cheerful, helpful and very pleasant. Food was delicious. Atmosphere was lovely.

Disappointed with Fishermans Cot. We used to be regular customers about 10 years ago. Carvery was not the best. It had clearly been sat for some time and not refreshed. There was limited choice of vegetables, but the gravy was tasty. The decor was tatty, and grubby, with cushions needing a good wash. Ladies toilets had black mould growing on walls and wallpaper hanging off. Service was mainly via an app, with no personal touch. Location is beautiful.

It is our local establishment within 5 minutes of our home and we love The Cot. It is cosy, comfortable and inviting. The restaurant has a great atmosphere with staff who make you feel so welcome at every visit. Service is efficient and customer service is fantastic. We have recently relocated to this area and have visited many Times already and we will continue to do so. When we have visitors come and stay, we make sure we bring them to this wonderful place and they all have the exact same opinion as us. 5 stars 🌟

Lunch with the family to say bon voyage to my nephew. Beautiful carvery. All staff were very busy and friendly.

What a true shame. Came for an evening meal and had some of the worst pub food I've had in a very long time. Our starters came promptly but midway through eating we were told by a waitress that our mains wouldn't come with the festive vegetables, we promptly said that it was okay but was the start of worse things to come. After our starters there was a hefty wait for our mains, nearly 45 mins passed and nobody came to take away our plates and then the mains arrived, starter plates still in situ, at first only one meal came out, then slowly the rest came, what was presented thoughwas probably the most bland and underdone pie and potatoes/veg I've ever had, hidden by absolutely drowning it in gravy to add some additional heat. This was part of their rather costly £33.99 Christmas deal, what came out was overcooked Brussels sprouts, about two parsnips which were undercooked and hard potatoes that looked like they had never seen an oven, and a lukewarm pie that tasted truly grim. I love a steak and ale pie but this was pungent. Our other guests meal was lukewarm chicken and a handful of chips £16 for a small breast and slaphazard presentation, it seems like they can't work the Christmas specials around the normal menu and so stuff was just whacked under a hot plate, meaning the bigger meals went cold. The staff were lovely and unfortunately we had to mention that the food wasn't up to par, they handled the situation well and offered to refund and we paid for our tables drinks, which again £6.10 for a pint is certainly on the more expensive side. I've been to pubs all over the country for food including Christmas specials and with the lack of care, issues sourcing parts of the meal which weren't informed until after we had our starters and the overall poor quality of the food it isn't really worth the price tag they are asking for. It's a real shame as the pub has a nice atmosphere but it clearly seems like a lack of staff and being able to cater for guests in larger groups. Go for a pint, maybe pass on the food until the quality improves. 2 stars. ⭐ ⭐

Very warm and welcoming place, with great selection of drinks. Staff were amazing and the food was great. Didn’t go outside but imagine in the summer next to the water would be a great place to relax.

Whilst travelling for work needed a last minute place to stay and stumbled across this gem.Great rooms, comfortable beds and great hospitality . Jo was very helpful and accommodating when I arrived.

Recently had our wedding reception here after having visited a few times ourselves and loving the location/views. Fortunately had a beautiful day in mid November and all the guests commented on how gorgeous the beer garden was. Food for 120 people was from the carvery and was delicious including the few vegan/veggie options requested too. The staff were brilliant and couldn’t have done anymore to help resolve a couple of hiccups. Wanted to mention Chelsea & Amy specifically who were involved in all the planning and preparations and really helped to make our big day one to remember. All in all an absolutely fantastic day and weekend as we also filled the hotel. Thank you all.

I spent my honeymoon at the fisherman’s cot 34 years ago & I haven’t managed to visit since then! I met 2 of my friends halfway between Bristol & Plymouth to have lunch with you last Tuesday. The pub is still absolutely gorgeous & I will not leave it so long to visit again! The staff from beginning to end were polite & helpful. The service was just perfect. We all had fish & chips & we all thought the meal was delicious. My friends had lemon tart which they thoroughly enjoyed. I only wanted ice cream & was offered a child’s sundae which was nice but it would be better to just have ice cream on the menu & be able to choose flavours. We had coffee in the bar by the fire after lunch - it felt cosy & Christmassy. We all had a great time & will do it again next year. You have kind, responsive & hard working staff - you all did good, Thankyou 🙂

Found ourselves nearby very early before anything was open and Sally welcomed us in and made us drinks even though they weren’t officially open. Incredible location and warm atmosphere.

Disappointing lack of vegan options - either curry or a burger. Curry wasn’t particularly hot (temperature) and the sweet potato cubes were undercooked/hard. Over priced at nearly £16 for a main course. Apple and cherry crumble was fine, but pretty flavourless. Good to see non-dairy milk options for hot drinks. The waiters we had gave good service, very friendly and helpful.

It’s a bit of a drive from WsM but worth it. Service was excellent and Sunday carvery was up to its usual standard. Even found a couple of pics of me and the Weston Coastguards on the ‘Wall of Remembrance’ (ok I sent them in) 🤣🤣

We had a room here in the attic. It was a cheap room. My only criticism is the shower doesn't really work as the ceiling is raked so I had to tilt my head and go in crouching position. But food and beers are really nice. If you sit in the beer garden you can watch traffic try and negotiate the medieval bridge which inspired the song Bridge over Troubled water. Nice view also of river.

Quite poor. I am dairy free. Our Waitress didn't know what the Soup of the Day was. When I then asked if it was dairy free (Butternut Squash), she went off to ask and confirmed it was. Having eaten it, I don't think it was. I had an immediate reaction, fortunately not extreme. The only other thing I had was some soda water. We asked that the soup for my wife and I be brought at the same time as the fish and chips for my father - it wasn't and was cold by the time his came. We couldn't start before him as he has dementia. The roast beef my mum had from the carvery was so tough she couldn't cut it and I found it a challenge. My fathers fish and chips were good though.

Wow! A first time visit. What a venue! Beautiful scenery, comfortable seating, friendly staff and amazing food and drink. Will definitely return. Maybe for a sleepover who knows?

Staff were very kind pleasant and courteous as well as accommodating as we had not booked but they gave us a table with no issues the food was A Star and not unlike some other places I've been to before on top of this our was welcome and he was given a treat by a member of staff so thank you for the 100% meal

Large pub serving draft beers and ciders and food. We found a discount voucher online when booking directly with the pub for 30% off main courses. We had a really nice friendly and helpful waitress which can make a big difference to your overall experience. I was in a group of 7 and views varied a lot about the food. I had fish and chips and thought my fish was deliciously fresh but another in the group found it old and a bit chewy. Some thought the food could have been hotter. Mine was fine so the ratings are my opinion. Very good selection of drinks. I liked it and would happily go again.

The young chef clearly has a knack for cooking carvery! I think his name is Henry. Great food and wonderful service!
