Finn's Traditional Fish and Chips in Reading

Second time I we have been really disappointed with the food. The chips were rock hard and looked like they had been recooked. Hardly any batter on the fish and just tasted awful. £23 for food that was thrown away. If we had of been in a restaurant we would have sent it back. Used to be good, wont be coming back.

Far too slow. Advised when we placed a telephone order that it would take 35 mins to cook (fine). Then when we arrived it took another 25 mins before food was ready - FOR FISH and CHIPS!! Won’t be going again.

Excellent quality, excellent service we will be back for more again soon. We ordered 24 portions for one of our regular social meetings and everyone loved the quality, the fish was excellent and the chips well cooked but not greasy. All 24 portions were still piping hot on arrival at our venue too. Many thanks to all the team at Finns for executing 24 meals so quickly.

Complete rip off, £10 for a tiny soggy piece of fish. Expected a nice meal from the reviews but seems like they're cutting corners.

We really fancied fish and chips for dinner on Sunday and did a quick search of where was open given that our local was closed. Finn's popped up on ThreeBestRated but all of the TripAdvisor reviews this year seem to be negative and these reviews seem to have had terrible experiences. Perhaps there was a change of management and the food wasn't as good anymore, perhaps they had their food spoiled by a negligent delivery driver, perhaps something else. Either way, I chanced it and decided to drive to Finn's to order. It's a well-presented and simple shop front, a little busy, and the man that served us was lovely. We ordered cod and chips, battered sausage and chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, and tartare sauce. Had to wait 10 minutes or so, the man serving us apologised for the wait, but I don't think that the apology was necessary - they were busy and it was all made fresh, well worth the wait! The fish was fresh and crispy, the chips were nice, the battered sausage had a really nice flavour to it, decent homemade tartare sauce too. The highlight of the meal for me was the mushy peas, and curry sauce. The mushy peas seemed to have a bit of mint in them, great flavour, great consistency, fresh and delicious. Similarly, the curry sauce was really flavourful - better than the bog-standard curry sauce that I was expected. Really delicious! I'll definitely recommend Finn's to friends and family, and will be going back there instead of my local from now on. As per the title of this review: don't let the negative reviews put you off - give it a go!

Absolute rip off. Smallest portions ever. With the recent reviews they’ll be out of business with a bit of luck.

I have ate from this restaurant before and the food was tasty but on this occasion it was absolutely awful. Chips almost black looked like reheated chips from the day before or cooked in extremely old oil. The fish and fish bites seemed off, tasted very odd and was not cooked properly in the same stale oil perhaps. Almost £20 and I threw most of it in the bin. Will never eat from this place again. If you was good fish and chips in Reading sea master in the meadway is the best place.

Ordered delivery for the first time the delivero driver got lost food arrived late and stone cold the chips were hard. Not enjoyable at all. I have bought from finns before and collected the food and never had a problem. I would never order a delivery again

Used to get lovely Fish, Chips and Chicken here, sadly now the food tasted re-heated and quality was lacking big time, would have been better (and probably tastier) to pop to the Co Op over the road and get my own!

We ordered 3 portions of scampi and we were given 16 pieces and 2 half pieces of scampi. “6” pieces of scampi per person is woefully low and the UK average is 8-10 pieces. Total rip off. Messaged to enquire a week later and no one has responded. Very disappointing!

Really excellent chips - cooked to perfection. I love the vegan “fish” (made from banana blossom). I suppose the onion rings could be better, but that’s my only negative criticism. Also, all the packaging is recyclable.

As per images posted how it arrived curry sauce just basically poured in bag .lid not secured , previous order sent gravy instead of curry sauce no attention to detail just chuck it out the door

We ordered fish and chips as a treat after recovering from Covid. We where extremely disappointed with the quantity (or lack of) for the money it cost. In our opinion what was delivered for £22 was only really enough for 1 person. We are both still hungry and now need to cook something else. The food was also lukewarm and the fish batter was soggy! Will never buy here again, it’s disgraceful that they think what they sent us for the money paid was acceptable!!! Photos attached to show the miserly potions we received.

The Chips were stale and were also the end of the bag stuff that I don't like. I like proper chips. There also weren't many chips either. The fish was also dry and overcooked.

The hipster in charge of this hip chip shop treated I felt we customers poorly, using I’m afraid overzealous application of Covid guidance to boss us about so I felt like cattle yet even less appreciated than had a farmer herded me with a prod! All this rather took the shine off my customer experience of this takeaway and will not go again which is a shame as the food whilst pricey is in all fairness fine.

Phoned a order told 15 minutes waited almost an hour poor service more worried about the just eat drivers

It’s with a heavy heart I write this best fish and chips but destroyed local custom . It was always a 15minute wait no issue., but now it’s 45 minutes in the cold with every just eat order dished up before regulars. Good luck Jeff & co I hope that the increased business makes you a lot of money. But I won’t be coming back and on talking to a lot of other people in our 45 minute outside wait I don’t think they will.

Extremely slow service. No communication from staff on how long the wait would be (45 minutes). No apology for the long wait. If you go here, leave an hours grace or order via Just Eat as you’re given precedence.

Friendly, cheerful, attentive staff, in a clean, funky shop. The fish was cooked to order, so it was super fresh and very tasty. I had cod, my partner had haddock, and both were very good indeed. Portions were extremely generous. If I had to fault the cod, I'd say that the batter could have been crispier. My partner loved the mushy peas, which were minted and not like standard mushy peas. If you like posh, crushed peas, these are great. But if you want standard chip shop mushy peas, luminous green and bearing little resemblance to the actual vegetable (as I do) you'll absolutely hate them!

I have been to finns many times and it has yet to disappoint me. The food is so so fresh. Also quality Tartar sauce!!! Keep it coming!!!

No other words then the best Poutine in England. The cheese! The spicy gravy! Nothing else compares. If there is anything you should do in Reading its getting a Poutine from Finns.

The fish, chips, homemade sauces are so addictive and awesome. I’m happy to have a local fish shop serving us a great food, we go there every Friday

I've ordered food from Finn's more times than I care to admit over the past year or so - and the food is always great. It's always cooked fresh to order and it's never greasy. The fish batter is nice and light, the chips are tasty and the chicken bites are perfection.You can also ring ahead to place your order before collecting it, as it can get busy at peak times - which is a testament to how popular it is. I highly recommend Finn's to anyone living in/visiting Reading.

Friendly staff, one bloke apologised that my fish BROKE while he was placing it in the box, told him it was no big deal, slice of lemon, mmmmmmmmm, yummy. chips to die for, actually made from POTATOES.

Cuando llegué a casa (a menos de 1 milla de distancia en automóvil), la parte central se había empapado ya que no estaban separados por papel a prueba de grasa. Fue bastante caro ya que pago menos en LONDRES.

First visit here. Lovely masala fish with a light batter. Haddock and chips were tasty. Tartar sauce lovely. Will return.

As my husband has Coeliac and cannot eat any gluten, it’s a great treat for him to have fish and chips. Finn’s do gluten free Tuesdays, where all the chips and battered dishes are freshly prepared in new oil, thus preventing cross contamination from any wheat. The cod is beautiful and fresh, perfectly cooked. And the real treat, gluten free battered squid rings. Fab chops as well.

Had an excellent fish cake here, it was made fresh to order. I came with chips and a choice of sauce, I opted for homemade tartar which went well with the delicious fish cakes.

Estaba muy ocupado con un grupo de 6º formadores de una escuela local que venía a recoger sus almuerzos. Reservaremos con antelación la próxima vez, pero a todos nos encantó la comida. Bien cocinada, bien de precio y bien presentada. Es una pena que el menú esté cambiando. . . .

As my title says, best fish and chips in town. Friendly service and worth every penny. Nice range with your standard and traditional fare, but some unique items worth trying too. Gluten free Tuesdays are also a good point!

Oh dear! I'd heard a number of good things about Finn's from friends, so arranged to make it a meeting point for pre-ice hockey match nosh. Website said it opens at 4.30pm, so we (4 of us) all got there for 4.30pm, along with 3 other locals. Shop frontage also said it opened at 4.30pm. However, it didn't open on time. After 20 minutes standing in the cold, it still hadn't opened; with no signs of life inside the building or notice indicating a reason for closure, we finally gave up (the other 3 people had already bailed) and went elsewhere. Result = no fish, a waste of time and £1.50 lost on parking meter charges. Very disappointing.

Running a WI quiz night, we needed a large number of fish & chips. The staff in Finns were helpful throughout & served us lovely, light, fresh & hot fish & chips for almost 60 people. Everyone really enjoyed the food & the staff couldn't have been nicer.

Very tasty, freshly cooked and very clean. You can eat outside too. You may need to find a good parking space as the road is narrow. They don’t deliver but you can phone beforehand to order your take-away. I recommend it.

You can taste quality - the Fish and Chips were made to order so slightly longer waiting time.The Batter on the Fish was light and crispy and went well with the freshly made Tar Tar sauce plus there was very little grease.

Buenas opciones vegetarianas y la poutine es muy agradable. Las porciones no son enormes y no es tan barato, pero la comida es de buena calidad. He estado aquí un par de veces y el pescado es de excelente calidad y está perfectamente preparado. A primera vista, parece un poco caro, pero dada la calidad de la comida, definitivamente vale la pena.

We were visiting family in Reading & found Finns on-line, So I drove over from Caversham & bought Four large Cod & chips, the service was polite & friendly, the cod was perfectly cooked, all perfectly equal sized with a nice crisp light batter & a perfect flakey interior - no mushiness !! The chips were perfectly cooked too. So now we know where to get excellent fish & chips next time we're in Reading & we want a takeaway, a great little find on a Sunday.

Have ordered from here a couple of times now. Food is always fresh and made to order. You do have a bit of a wait but that is now the norm for fresh fish and chips. Cod is a good portion, always cooked perfectly, lovely and moist and served with a wedge of lemon! Won't order their squid rings again. Twice they've been overcooked and rubbery and stringy but I won't fault them on one dish. Battered sausage was enjoyable and keen to try other menu items.

Not a cheap take-away & limited, bit too ‘fancy’, menu. Traditional fish & chips would be better received & at a reasonable price. Unlikely to return

A fantastic local fish and chippy! The restaurant is very clean and the decor is great. Extensive menu with a great selection of food including pies and poutine. Portion size was good, fish was crispy and succulent. Mushy peas were fresh and chips good too. I go on a regular basis and always enjoy! The only downsides are local parking restrictions and they you have to pay for sauces.

Went on a Wed evening just before a mad rush of people - First visit here and the guy at the till was really helpful very customer focused - I had cod and chips was so nice didnt have that nasty after taste you often get with deep fried food - The cod was chunky and the batter was just right the chips where also really good, I got a reg cod and chip and this was more than enough.Will be going again

Really clean shop, friendly staff, good value and amazing fish & chips, burgers, sausages, onion rings! All the food is cooked fresh but we didn't have to wait too long and it all was delicious couldn't fault it, we will be back.

Not the best fish and chips in the world that's reserved for the ones in Cornwall by the sea! But as far reading goes this is the best! I especially recommend the poutine!

Nos encanta estar cerca de este barrio tome lugar. Es un espacio muy limpio y moderno, y tienen buen pescado y patatas fritas. El abadejo es nuestro favorito ir, y agradecemos la dieta sin gluten Martes y descuentos para estudiantes que ofrecen! Normalmente es bastante rápido, aunque puede estar muy concurrido por la cena.

The man at the counter was ridiculously rude and seemed more interested in watching tv. Food looked nice but didn't even get that far as I just walked out after his disgusting attitude.

This is a good fish and chip shop. All fish is cooked to order so you do have to wait about 10 mins for it but is worth it.

Had the king prawns and regular cod. The batter was perfect - crispy and light and the prawns tasted brilliant! Very clean and looks great and has 5* hygiene too

Hemos estado aquí un par de veces, está al otro lado de la carretera desde mi desayuno favorito mixto. Las patatas fritas han sido perfectas cada vez, que es la medida de un buen "fish and chips", pero es el pescado que más me impresionó. Y a pesar de ser llamado un chip tradicional tienda, tienen un par de cosas en el menú que no encontrará en cualquier "fish and chips" promedio de lectura. La poutine tiene que ser probado para creerlo, y los pasteles de pescado son el tipo de cosas que te dan en un restaurante de final. El único inconveniente es que no estar muy concurrido a veces y espera me hace incluso hambriento!

worth the wait for fish to be cooked fresh, love the nuttiness for the oil on the chips. i regularly go in for family takeaway, the HOMEMADE fish cakes are to die for as are their HOMEMADE spinach and feta goujions/balls. Haven't found another fish and chips shop that do homemade food. the masala fish and poutine (with spicy onion gravy) are also a MUST to be tried. the staff are always friendly when we visit, everything is so fresh and crisp, especially the pies, get in early before they all go. will continue to go back and we don't use another fish and chip shop in Reading
