After reading countless reviews of fish and chip shops across Anglesey, we decided to round off our magical two-night stay with our three children by trying Port Chippy, which had received strong praise online. It was over an hour’s round trip from our base in Gwalchmai – unfortunately, it proved to be a real let-down. The lady who served us seemed moody from the moment I walked in with my two eldest kids, which set the tone straight away. When I asked for a "Large Haddock", rather than explaining their approach to portion sizes, she simply pointed at a small, difficult-to-decipher chalkboard listing obscure size options. I can only assume their "traditional" sizing correlates to the number of fish pieces, but some basic customer service or explanation wouldn’t have gone amiss. It spoke volumes – no hospitality and no effort made to help. Despite only one person ahead of us, we waited nearly 20 minutes for our order of haddock, large chips, and a large gravy – an excessive wait given how quiet it was. Their version of a "large" turned out to be three smaller pieces of haddock, which turned out to be chewy and not particularly enjoyable. The chips were disappointingly hard, cold, and tasteless, and even though we asked for salt and vinegar, none was added. The gravy was especially poor – congealed, flavourless, and frankly inedible. As for Amlwch itself – while it looks postcard-perfect in photos, that part of town didn’t live up to expectations in person. Even on a beautiful, warm April day during Easter half-term, the harbour was deserted, with not a single boat in sight. It felt lifeless, which was a real shame. All in all, the experience was a swing and a miss – definitely not worth the journey. At £17.80, the price felt outrageous for the long wait and disappointing quality. I'd highly suggest giving this one a miss.

Outstanding chippy. Proper chips, lovely and crisply battered fish, and scampi.

The potential to be a fabulous chippy it’s ruined by their very strange Fish portions. Essentially, they have one size fish, which is ‘mini’. If you want a regular size portion, you are presented with two tiny pieces. If you want a large size portion of fish, you are presented with three tiny pieces. And if you want a jumbo size piece of fish, you are given four tiny pieces. So absolutely no chance of a lovely big thick juicy piece of fish and the batter ratio is all wrong. The large portion of chips that I bought to share with my husband was the size of a regular portion of chips at every other chippy I have used. They were out of stock of the pie that my husband wanted, but they did have a steak and kidney pudding, which he did thoroughly enjoy. I would not go there again if I wanted fish, but the chips were tasty.

Sorry to mark you down but your fish needs to be thicker, I ordered Haddock, it was cooked fresh, but it was so thin. I don't mind wafer thin ham but not water thin fish. I would have classes this as a children's portion. When I asked if this was the biggest I was told yes and that there is a smaller one, I dread to think how small that would be. Your staff are amazing, service was excellent and the shop is clean so all the stars are for them

Curry sauce was disgusting. Mushy Peas out of can and no flavour and not mushy. Potato scallap not cooked..Fish and chips are excelente

Food has always been great, no complaints at all. The only negative is ordering online. Be prepared to wait at busy times, I mean really wait....The time selected for collection rarely happens but the plus is the chippy is next door to avpub so a cheeky beer while waiting 😅😅

The best fish and chips we have ever had. The quality of the meal was excellent. I bet they use beef dripping to fry… the chips were amazing, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The batter on the fish did look a little dark but it wasn’t burnt and tasted amazing as well. We look forward to a return visit from darkest Shropshire. My son and I still talk about the meal and Finney’s has become the fish and chip standard to beat… good work!

Take away fish and chips. Freshly cooked, well packed and really enjoyable food.

Fish was OK but a bit on the small side. The batter was oily and the oil it was cooked in tasted like old burnt oil. Fish was a bit chewy as well. Chips were OK not the best. Mushy peas were totally tasteless. We were hungry and in a rush so ate up but not worth going there again!

Had fish cakes jumbo sausage chips mushypea fritters peas gravy curry sauce all were fabulous fritters and fish cakes cooked to order so absolutely perfect everything was lovely

Take your fishing gear and a bbq to the port and make your own!!!!!! MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE LEAVING! Understood it was a start to a bank holiday (Saturday). But from a group of people stood out side, and someone who went in complaining before me about how things where missing from there order. Everyone inside working couldn’t care less the guy who served didn’t show much care and was trying to rush, placing orders. Back to the people sitting outside who where trying to eat what was supposed to be their meal, they went back in to say there was a fish missing from their order only to be confronted with “I need to see the reseat and your food to see if anything is missing so I can replace it” For me I had sausages missing so I went back in and asked the guy at the till. Yet with no apology for the missing order I left to return home to cold chips MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE LEAVING!

We ate fish and chips here for the first time on our two-week trip to Wales because the snack bar just looked inviting. We weren't disappointed. The Small Cod was big enough and the place is just lovely.

Update one year later! Awful. 30 minutes waiting for 2 fish and chips. One fish was soggy the other was overcooked , tough and dry with overdone batter. Chips and curry were nice. Seemed too preoccupied with delivery orders. So sad that this has gone so far down hill . What's happened?? Fabulous ❤ fish and chips were lovely 😍 didn't wait long and they were freshly cooked.

One of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had! Delicious batter and lovely fish cooked to perfection. Excellent chips, peas and curry sauce. A lovely friendly welcome. No indoor seating but plenty of benches outside. Have a little walk to the harbour afterwards. Highly recommend.

Disappointed that the regular fish was thin and very small, made me think I would hate to see how small the small was! Overall I would not return.

food was ok. i had a steak pudding & chips which wasnt too bad but other members of the family were a bit disappointed with there pies saying they were very dry.

Ordered sausage and chips five times, drinks and chicken chunks so not a big order and not complicated. I got home and only four sausage and chips! So I went back to say their mistake and yes I did get my sausage and chips but no sorry for the mistake or inconvenience just miserable faces! I will not be going back there and I am a local, would rather go to the kebab house, at least they say hello and thanks.

I do not understand all these good reviews, in my experience the lady on the front desk was so moody and unfriendly it was laughable. I rarely leave a bad review but I was being so polite... it simply seemed like she just would rather be anywhere else. Really wasn't a nice experience, I was excited to visit as I saw all these good reviews of the place. The fish / sausage was tiny but at least it was tasty. The chips were hard and clearly not fresh.. Maybe they were just having a bad day...

A small chip shop tucked away. With some very welcoming staff the fish and chips cooked to order and very fresh.

Within 30 mins of eating here, I was ill and spent the rest of the day back and forth to the bathroom and getting rid of the food they served. Won't be going back.

Takeaway Chippys are not noted for their atmosphere, but the fish and chips were excellent as always. There is a pub next door if you need to pass the time while your order is prepared. There is a good online ordering system.

Unfortunately the food here has just gone down hill over time. Was excellent but now the chips are awful the cod is really small for the price although we do like the crispy batter on the cod, the sausage is always really salty as are the peas and the curry sauce can be hit and miss, we have been regular customers for years but have now decided to go elsewhere where the food os really nice and cheaper and they serve a large cod.

Cod was tasty and moist but somewhat smaller than expected. The fish were literally half the size of the fish at our go-to local chippy in Nottinghamshire! The potato scallops were tasty and the chips were fine. The mushy peas were a bit bland.

Called to order. Went to pick the food up. Lady there was very busy but efficient and friendly. Food was great, tasty and plentiful.

First visit to Finneys. Will definately be back and using my loyalty card. Ordered online which was easy drove down and picked my order up. Very friendly and efficient staff. Fish and chips were fabulous 5☆

Found by chance ...two young ladies were in when we visited on Sat 18th Feb very polite friendly... absolutely the best fish and chips we've ever tasted even down Cornwall...not greesy very light batter..and crispy.. would highly recommend if near by ..

Good fish and chips, cooked to order

My first visit today and I had the small cod and chips. £6.50. Unbelievably good. Light fluffy crispy chips. Crispy batter on juicy fresh fillet. I’ve been in fish and chop heaven for half an hour!

Normally we buy fish and chip takeaway from the sister shop in Benllech, that day we were in Amlwch walking another part of the Anglesey coastal path and stopped for lunch at the Port chippy. Quality is excellent and equally as good as the Golden fry. Tables outside to enjoy the harbour square. Recommended.

Worst chips I have ever tasted. They were cold and hard, and were clearly not freshly made. Portions are small for the price too.

Well what a lovely discovery this was. We called in and had fish chips and peas. They were really well cooked. The fish was crispy and just perfect. They did child sized portions. The only negative comment I can make is the tomato ketchup was expensive and not good quality. But a small criticism.

Quality depends who is cooking. Please don't micro cook the pies..... Use a function that makes the pastry crumble not go soggy.

Chips are slightly crunchy which is nice as lots of chippy chips these days are too soggy. The fish was lovely with crispy batter. Would recommend the Sweet Curry sauce too.

Car park outside of chippy which is at Amlwch Harbour. Fish was excellent with just enough batter and mainly fish. The homemade fish cakes are large and tasty. The chips unfortunately were just average and hence the 4 star

Quite possibly the best fish and chips in Wales, if not the UK. Everything is cooked to order. That means a little wait but it's well worth it.

Saw vegan options online so was excited. Their only vegan pie available was 'turkey', stuffing and cranberry... in July? Asked for some veg bean chilli instead (canned supermarket chilli but thought be ok to compliment some chips) but only found out after leaving that they served it on top of the chips, turning them all super soggy with chilli, so for an extra £6.95 the chilli ruined my chips. Expensive for a supermarket can too.

As it was lunch it was a share of their steak & kidney pie with chips. Pie is way better than pukka pies. Throughly enjoyed it, chips are wonderful too. We ate outdoors at the tables provided.

Menus in Google images are out of date. 1 large cod meal (cod, chips and sauce, no drink £11) and 1 large cod came to £19.35 with bag. Cod was a thin fillet, but good crispy batter. Chips were fine. However both were pretty oily. Overall felt a bit expensive compared to others, though was still really busy when we went.

Found it easy to order online ,picked a time and order was ready spot on time ,all the food was really tasty and good size portions and the dessert where lovely and the service by a really nice polite young lady

Up in Anglesey for a holiday and had a takeaway from this place. Absolutely lovely. Pizzas, kebabs and burgers really delicious and friendly staff. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Lovely fishcake, chips & regular cod. However, I ordered and paid for 2 regular cod, 1 chips and 1 fishcake. Having driven all the way back to our B&B, discovered we had 1 cod, 1 fishcake and 2 chips. Having waited 2 days (on our holiday) to eat here, as highly recommended, plus they had been closed on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday (why I don't know as they'd have made a killing!), we were really disappointed we didn't get what we ordered :(

It was expensive and not that wonderful tbh. Chippy in cemaes much nicer and a bit cheaper. They've stopped the app too which made it easier to order and pay. Not worth the effort now.

Portion size of the chips for 2.20 were very small. I could of held them in one hand and a quarter of them were black! Who serves black chips to customers? In fact who'd cook black chips in the first place? Mini cod was the size of 2 fish fingers. What I did eat, tasted very good.
