Fava Restaurant - Greek Kitchen in Edinburgh, City of

Not great, especially for people with dietary restrictions. Menu isn't very descriptive, with dishes including cheap elements that aren't listed to bulk the plates out. I'm unable to eat potatoes, and asked to swap the potatoes for some green leaves or veg. They refused, which is really unkind, and told me the only swap they would be willing to make was to fries - weird suggestion for someone who has just told them they can't eat potatoes. On arrival, the meat platter was a bit chewy, the gyros a bit bland. Wouldn't go again or recommend it.

Awesome Greek place with several vegetarian options and a fair price

Albanian-owned restaurant offering a Greek-style menu. The owners operate several other Edinburgh restaurants, like La Casa and Mia Italian on Dalry and Leith Road. Don’t expect an authentic Greek dining experience here; the prices are high, the quality is mediocre, and the service feels rushed and impersonal. There are many better Greek eateries in Edinburgh.

Food is nice enough although I have definitely had better gyros and the fava bean dip was lacking in flavour. Service is fast but I'd rather the restaurant focus on improving the quality/taste of it's food. Could be so much better.

Great restaurant with authentic Greek dishes however it was very noisy and that spoilt it for us as an older couple.

Nice restuarant, we ate courgettes, calimari, Gyros, mixed grill and dessert. Service is good and restuarant is nicely decorated inside. Courgettes and gyros rea⁷lly good. Mixed grill was ok maybe just a bit too much meat! Dessert we got the chocolate cake which was good. Would go back

Since we still had some time before our return flight, we spontaneously decided to stop here - and we weren't disappointed at all! The service was extremely friendly and the cozy ambience of the restaurant contributed to a relaxed atmosphere. For starters we enjoyed the best mussels we have tasted in a long time. For the main course we chose a portion of gyros, which was wonderfully fresh, authentic and deliciously prepared. The price-performance ratio was also absolutely right. We can highly recommend this restaurant!

I arrived early by myself and was given a warm welcome. Even on Tuesday evening the atmosphere was buzzing. The food was great and reasonably priced.

Absolutely loved our visit to Fava tonight. Food, restaurant and staff were superb and although I didn’t have any this time the cocktails were a huge hit! Will definitely be back…soon. Gorgeous.

Excellent Greek dish, we had chicken and pork gyros. The portions are certainly smaller than a doner kebab but the quality is really excellent. Well-cooked, non-greasy meat

My family and I had an excellent time at Fava nice and casual, everything else top notch.

Fava - NO VAVA ! What atmosphere ? No Greek decore, no greek music to transport me to Greece, frankly I could gave been in any modern high street resturant in anywhere in the world. We felt pressured and rushed to order ... mains only to keep space for desert when mains Kliftiko x 2 arrived the plates were ice cold ...sorry guys but a cardinal sin to serve a hot dish on cold plate. I asked for extra gravy / sauce ...was told there was ..but by my eye was the same amount as on my friends plate ... served on a bed of Potato "puree"... why not call it what it is ..mash... esp as it is stolen lamb ..be more rustic than fancy snd get it wrong ...ie ensure the pototo is completely mashed .. I had chunks of solid potato in the mix ..... Dissapointed with my main and the chatter so loud we didnt stay to try desert or finish with a coffee ... all round ... an expensive and dissapointing mediocre meal. 65 pound bill could have strerched to 90 emwurh dester and coffee and possible nightcap .... Fava not a resturant id rave yo my network about.

Busy place and no wonder! The food is fantastic and arrives very quickly. Lovely cocktails. Great atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff.

Service was quite slow but it was likely due to the lunch rush. Food was pretty quick and delicious! Easy lunch spot for something more substantial.

We were a party of 8 and the restaurant was full when we were seated. It had a fabulous atmosphere - a real buzz. This on a Wednesday night before 7:00 pm! The staff were great, very attentive, friendly and gave excellent recommendations, explaining the dishes perfectly. The food was amazing, we had a selection of mezes dishes for the table. The fried courgette with red tzatsiki one of the many highlights. I can't wait to go back.

Was recommended this place by a local and it certainly lived up to my expectations. Both the food and the service were excellent. The tzatsiki was fantastic. I would highly recommend the lamb which was excellent. Definitely give this place a try it you are in the mood for some great geek food.

Amazing food and great atmosphere 😍

Ouzo, which should have been served cold, was hot. The portions are generally very small, I went with high expectations, it cannot exceed the average.

Not particularly good although the place was busy on a Thursday evening. Waited ages at the table before being able to make our order, starters for four arrived but in 3 distinct phases, just plonked on the table, meaning some had almost finished before others had started. Wine ok but on the expensive side. Mains a disappointment. Mash was watery purée, lamb kleftico shank ok however the moussaka wasn't authentic at all, no layers of aubergine, potato and courgette just a hot pot topped with sauce and probably microwaved. Greek moussaka has thinly sliced vegetables and meat layered with sauce overlaid and cooked in an oven. Baklava was good. Service was appalling, we were just left and had to ask for everything, so poor we removed the service charge from the bill. Can't believe this place is so popular.

Food was amazing and so was service. They were incredibly fast in serving our big table even though they were super busy. The baklava was to die for and the gyros portion for that price was huge. We got a a wide selection of dishes from the menu and everyone LOVED the food. Definitely one of the best Greek places i've bern to in the city. Can't recommend it enough!

Food wasn't great: my gyros was lacking in flavour. I was also served a disgusting pint that tasted like vinegar. To be fair to the staff, they sorted the drink out quickly, but it put a real dampener on the visit.

Since we didn't have a reservation, they could only sit us at a table for about an hour. We used the time to share several starters, all of which were delicious. It was busy and therefore quite noisy, but the service was friendly and quick.

Having a Greek partner, we always find going to greek restaurants very hit and miss - especially when you're used to the real thing. However, Fava is very much a hit! Beautiful food, feels very fresh and authentic. 5* from us.

Excellent food, service and value for money!

Had a really nice meal here, favourite was the portakalopita (I think that is right) huge portion but a box to take home was appreciated. Only bug bear is added service charge, personal preference is to give cash or choose an amount but this is pre added.

Very nice greek restaurant in the Haymarket area. Good food, nice service, a little overcrowded at times but that’s because of its popularity. Definitely recommend a visit when around.

I've been here a couple of times now and every time it is superb. I came last night with my partner and had a couple mezedes to start and then the mains. Great tasting Greek food, great service, and beautiful decor in the restaurant. 100% recommend!

Beautifully decorated interior. Service was attentive. I had the grilled fish main course. Probably the best grilled fish I’ve had in Edinburgh. I would definitely return for this. The orange cake was far too sweet.

This is a bad review because the place has gone downhill. They used to offer authentic Greek food (like kleftiko) but they have now gone European with a goal to do volume vs quality. Similarly the deserts are down to 3 (of which one is not even Greek) vs the selection they had before. It is a pity

Very underwhelmed by the food… hummus was bland, pitta bread was soggy, the chicken was dry and the calamari average. Lovely restaurant and nice staff but unfortunately won’t be returning!

Came last Saturday for lunch.We we're told about I, and told to try. Didn't disappoint. Was a fantastic meal from start to finish.The starters through to the sweet. The service was very good too. Will definitely be back..

A stylish Greek restaurant. It seems to be one of the restaurants run by an Italian owner who also runs the pizza shop next door, as well as nearby Italian and Japanese restaurants. All stores have stylish interiors. This store is always crowded. I ordered a mix of grilled chicken and pork recommended by the staff, and a shrimp dish, and it was delicious. I thought it was a bit salty, but the atmosphere was so nice that the taste of the food was even more delicious. I feel like that.

I was looking forward to dinner here after reading the menu and good reviews, but it was honestly so average. The food was fine, but not outstanding (although the saganaki was rather disappointing; what we were served was basically a deep-fried piece of cheese which was bizzare and far too expensive). We were also served our food just minutes after ordering which made us feel rushed, but then waited almost 40 minutes for staff to check on us and provide the bill after we finished our meal.

Made the reservation in advance of our weekend in Edinburgh with friends via their website, two of our party arrived on time, unfortunately we were stuck in traffic and were 15mins late. The staff told our friends that the kitchen would be closing at 8:30pm, & kept rushing them to order, when I made the booking for 8pm this wasn’t advertised as the case. We arrived at 8:15, were handed menus and told to order, a few minutes later we were offered drinks. The starters came and the staff were trying to clear the plates before we’d even finished! The food came out & was disappointing, lumpy mash, no vegetables with the chicken, no sauce with the mussels & woefully small portions. Once the food was out no one came and checked on us, two young ladies started cleaning, emptying bins etc & the guys all sat down to eat, we weren’t offered any desserts or a second drink, I even had to get up and ask for the bill. Booked because of their good reviews but was very disappointed. Maybe if they shut at 8:30pm on a Sunday they shouldn’t take a booking for 8pm!

Was expecting big things after trying to get in a few times, place is nice inside lovely staff, but the food was very disappointing, wife ordered mussels and the smelt disgusting like they were cooked in stinking water, sister inlaw ordered Halloumi it was like a peace of rubber dry and tasteless, prawns were good, salad main was like moosh, brother gyros ok, also it cost 180 pounds for substandard food, really wanted to like it staff who were serving were great, just the food was so disappointing alex Johnstone, message me who ever the boss is and I'll tell them in person, I so wanted to like your restaurant but it was bad sorry, my beer was good 👍

Very good service! The food is amazing! However, you need to reserve a table in advance, because it is always full.

Incredible surprise, we spent the first day of our trip to eat without a reservation and it was not possible because they had all the times reserved, so we decided to reserve for dinner the next day. Value for money of 10, for about €15 per person you can try a large number of dishes and leave very full. All very good. I recommend booking as it gets quite crowded.

Absolutely loved this place, it was such a great experience from start to finish. Excellent and very helpful staff who gave amazing recommendations, there were superb food choices and wonderful drinks, especially the choice of Greek wines. Highly recommend to anyone in the area and I will 100% be back when I am back in Edinburgh.

Very accommodating and the food was fantastic at a very fair price

We were so thankful to finally find somewhere that did authentic gyros wraps, and these did not disappoint. Also the staff were wonderful and super friendly.

No criticism of food or staff other than to charge £2.99 for 4 small quarters of pitta bread is daylight robbery

The meat was overcooked and not seasoned. No salad, rice or any other sides. Bad value for the money we have paid. A 10% service charge was automatically applied to the bill what we have realised too late. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere was also very noisy and it was difficult to keep up a normal conversation with the person who was sitting in front of you. Take your money somewhere else

Very cozy place, it was full, we were lucky to be able to stay without having made a reservation. We went based on a recommendation and the truth is that it was a success. All delicious.

Recently came here for dinner and was very impressed. Had the meat grill which was delicious but not too much too. Would highly reccomend this place and would visit again.

Great, fresh dishes, with very healthy portion sizes. We ordered a selection of dishes between 3 of us and we were absolutely stuffed. The salads & dips are super delicious and fresh. The staff are pleasant but can come across a little awkward. The decor is fab, really great spot in Edinburgh for good Greek food. We found it to be reasonably priced too!

We had Itison voucher for this place and we will definitely come back. Food is tasty, stuff is very friendly and the place was buzzing. We had vegan sharing plate and meat sharing one and we had to take half home as it was too much food for us.

We received a very friendly welcome and the female waitress was friendlier than the male one. Very small portions for too high a price. We didn't get enough.

2nd time here and as always, the restaurant does not fail to impress.

The food and service were outstanding. We tried several of the appetizers including hummus and tzatki. We ordered a couple of entrees to share. It was a great way to try lots of things. All the food was tasty and freshly prepared. The pita bread was very flavorful and great texture. We got baklava and orange cake for dessert which were both fantastic. There's limited parking but it's close walking to the city center. The inside is accessible but there is a step up into the entrance.

If we return to Edinburgh, we will not hesitate to return to this Greek restaurant. We ordered two gyros wrapes, one chicken and the other vegetable with hummus sauce, it was super good, and we were treated great and the waiters were very friendly. They have very good taste in decoration, it is a shame that in Spain you cannot have a Greek restaurant close to home. 100% recommended

What a lovely place - I wish I actually lived in Edinburgh so I could come back here!! We shared the pikilia platter and also got the dolmades and saganaki, and also shared a baklava for dessert and everything was absolutely delicious, it was just like being back in Greece. The only downside was that they couldn’t swap the cocktail sauce in the platter for extra tzatziki (we love tzatziki) but honestly the food was so good that we weren’t that bothered. The saganaki in particular really stood out to us, the balance between the sweet honey and salty cheese was just 🤌🤌 perfection!! I also loved the interior design - the hanging plants, decorations and wall art were giving me inspiration for when I design my own home in the future!!

We went to Fava at 7 PM on a Monday evening, despite this the place was fully booked and people were being turned away at the door at first we assumed this was a good sign. Food service was fast and the portion size of the Gyros portions was good for the price however they were unable to accommodate my request of grilled veggies as a replacement for the falafel, this is a bit strange as the grilled veggies were an option for the usual Gyros wraps. The hummus that was served with them was rather bland as was my partners Tzatziki sauce, the fries were a little overdone and the salad was very onion heavy. Unfortunately I have to mark down the service as no one came to our table to ask how our meal was until after we had finished, the staff however did seem a little stretched with only 2 or 3 of them in front of house with one on the bar. The restaurant itself was very noisy making having a conversation difficult with the background music simply adding to the cacophony of noise. Furthermore the hand dryers in the bathrooms were not working and I had to use loo roll to dry my hands. Overall a very mediocre experience and far from the best food I have had for the price which was disappointing.

This is the second time I have visited this restaurant and I will be back!! Food is delicious and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Prices are about average I would say. Highly recommend.

For the money we pay, the waiter is not friendly. There is a 10% compulsory service charge which is not well deserved. The food is amazing we are here for our anniversary and satisfied.

Very busy so service was a tiny bit slow but the food was lovely and the staff are very nice. My only complaint, and it's the same for most restaurants, is that I had trouble hearing my friends. Some acoustic tiles on ceilings would make all the difference and do not have to be obvious.
