Big fan of Fat Hippo nice burgers and sides at a not too bad price.

Great place with a fabulous atmosphere and decoration. We were greeted when we got in and assured that either the manager or our server only would attend to us and explained the gluten-free products and preparations very thoroughly. My friend had the gluten-free PBJ beef burger and said it was very good. I had the hangover 3 chicken burger, which was lovely and crispy with a tasty sauce and pickles - very tasty and huge. I would definitely recommend for both gluten allergies and general dining. Very welcoming, knowledgeable, with delicious food. All the dips were gluten-free, too. Will visit again next time I'm in Newcastle.

Amazing burgers and very allergy conscious. Gluten free options were really good, practically everything on the menu can be made gluten free (all beef burgers) and this was thoroughly explained by the friendly staff. Overall portion size was good. Atmosphere is good, very cool underground theme, however can feel a little cramped when busy. Recommend booking!

Ruby and Kurtis were unreal serving our breakfast, coffee was top notch and son loved the pancakes!

I chose the restaurant because of its gluten free options. The waiter, who was super nice, showed me all the gluten-free options (note: the restaurant is not suitable for people with celiac disease). In general the staff was very professional and friendly. Unfortunately I have to agree with the "bad" reviews when it comes to the burgers. The meat was quite dry and yet the burger seemed to be swimming in fat. I would recommend choosing one large patty instead of two small ones. Apart from that, the food was very tasty and the hand-cut fries in particular are highly recommended.

One of the best restaurants I've been to. The food was cooked to perfection and tasted absolutely amazing. The staff were absolutely fantastic and so friendly. Service was quick and done with a friendly attitude and smile and the atmosphere and interior design is brilliant. 10/10 would 100% eat here again and recommend to anyone.

Started off with a shared starter of dirty waffles. Which with that sauce we could of just destroyed a bowl of them on there own. But for mains we had the pub+JJ which was everything you would hope it would be and a born slippy which was also to die for but the braised pork rib meat was just the next level. With sides of seasoned fries and tater totts, we unfortunately couldn't manage a desert but you can guarantee we will be back again to try one. Definitely hands down would recommend my god is was like a food coma.

If I could give service a 6 I would. We had Suzie D and had a great experience. My friend who I was with is autistic so struggles with loud places and wear ear defenders. Suzie spotted this and moved us to a quieter spot without fuss and was a great attentive server dispute it being very busy. The food was great as usual

I have been wanting to try this for sometime now, but what a disappointment, ordered 3 Starters and 2 Burgers but ate some of the starters and had to leave it all as it was soo oily, massively overrated and i will not recommend. I have had far better tasting food in smaller establishments.

Amazing burgers and loved the trash browns! Almost walked past the entrance as its just a doorway and stairs down, but so pleased we didn't. Would highly recommend and the price is also reasonable. Polite and friendly staff. We'll definitely come back next time we're up this way.

Far too slow to deliver food for what was a pretty basic order put a downer on things and the kids got more chips than the adults. Staff were nice but I wouldn't go back again if the wait were to be repeated.

Lucy was fab, checked to see if we wanted to move cause I was a bit warm, double checked all our dishes as I'm veggie, perfect amount of attentiveness

Always a hit! Delicious big 'Honey Monsta' burger. Good amount of sauce and tasty beef patties. The fried chicken tends to steal the show. It's always super crispy. I'd love to be able to order strips as a side! I also really enjoyed the purple slaw, refreshing and a big portion. Quite a long wait for food and the place is always busy. The staff are great as well as efficient though. Previous visit: Top tier burgers! The Semi-Parmed Life Burger was superb. Big chunks of crispy chicken with tasty garlic mayo and plenty of pickles. A perfect mouthful and one of the best chicken burgers I've had. Me and my mates inhaled our food. The staff were fantastic and the venue is atmospheric too.

With the place being underground it does tend to get a bit warm down there. I think the tables would benefit from having fans being attached perhaps on the walls near the lights? Found myself fanning myself with the menu a lot. Otherwise it's great and I always enjoy the food and the staff are very pleasant.

I read the reviews for this place that raved about how fantastic the burgers were so we decided to give it a go. The actual place is really cool, I really liked the basement setting. The food was ok, I had a chicken burger. The let down for me was the noise, it was too loud and it was difficult for us to hear each other (it was Friday night) so likely because it's one of their busier times, but if you're sensitive to sound, it's worth knowing. When it came to getting the bill, it was a little difficult, but again could be because they were busy.

If we knew that we will need to wait for food 35 minutes we wouldn’t be ordering starter. People next to us ordered later and had their food earlier and left at the moment we had our starter. Ruined the whole mood for the day.

So glad we was recommended Fat Hippo, this place is brilliant. The staff was super friendly and George was amazing, he gave us great recommendations when I asked and such a nice guy that made our dining experience perfect. The food was absolutely amazing, so much on the menu with very good prices. Would highly recommend this warm cosy environment with great food and friendly staff.

My wife took me to the Fat Hippo because she had previously visited there with her family and enjoyed it so much that she said I must go. The visit was well worth it, food was the best, staff were friendly and service was spot on. The next time we are in Newcastle we will certainly be calling into the Fat Hippo for more great food.

I went to fat hippo earlier this week, and was greeted with excellent service from a waitress and waiter, who were both extremely knowledgeable and understanding about my allergy restrictions. The gluten free burger bun is also vegan and very yummy! Excellent service and yummy food, 10/10!

First time trying after seeing so many good reviews. In our personal experience we will not return the burger was pretty standard I’ve had better burgers else where so can’t get my head round the hype and my son got the kids chicken burger he didn’t Evan have a bite of it as he started trying the batter first and there was all this black stuff on closer inspection the chicken was full of black veins and black gunk so my son refused to eat it I don’t blame him I told the guy that came sure he was manger I told him to look at it and he did and just said it’s because it’s not breast it’s a thigh meat and that’s why it’s like that no apology or anything it doesn’t state on the menu either so my son was hungry and we had to go else where and get him some more food

we had an amazing meal and our server suzie made sure that one of our members who has an allergy was properly looked after and that the chef knew about it. She was also very funny and easy to talk to.

Food was good, though I felt a little over priced. Several vegan options which was nice. The music was too loud for such a small, basement place. Staff was extremely friendly, if very busy.

Very catering staff when I informed them that I had a dairy intolerance. They were more than happy to swap the brioche bun and cheese to be vegan for me. The burgers were great, staff were lovely and service was fast. After our favourite restaurant in Newcastle shut down my partner and I have been trying to search for a new favourite restaurant and I think we found it. Will certainly return more often! Looking forward to returning. Edited with most recent experience: Had an odd experience this time round. We came in and were told we could sit anywhere, we very briefly sat down at one table but decided to move to a different table - this was before we got served and no one was around when we sat down/moved. We then got our order taken. I asked if it would be possible to get the “little bill” burger done as a big burger - we came at a time where the little bill was unavailable. I was told that couldn’t be done. I rephrased my question just to ask if I could have the ingredients of little bill put on a burger but was told no/they “weren’t allowed to do it”. This left me a bit puzzled because I could have just gone on to order a wild bill and removed certain ingredients to basically create a little bill? That was an after thought though so I just went for the American. The food and drinks order was taken, all well and good. Then the manager came back seeming a bit frazzled because a manager didn’t take my order (I have a dairy intolerance so a manager needs to take my order). We were then informed that there was a confusion as we were marked down as the wrong table so our order needed to be taken again - I think this was due to us switching tables. I don’t really think it was that confusing and I feel like the staff seemed more stressed than they needed to be on a Tuesday evening. Other than that the drinks and food were good but the service was certainly a bit confusing.

Bland, quite underwhelming. Service was not the best.

I ordered the chicken semi-parmed life burger with fries. The chicken was cooked perfectly however I found it to be very bland and lacking flavour. The fries were served cold as well. It also took nearly 30 mins for the meal to be served. Overall, quite disappointing.

Personally, I think burger places are often overrated. Not so with Fat Hippo. The burgers are genuinely lovely, full of good, different flavours and much more interesting than just burgers with extra bacon and cheese chucked on top for the sake of it. I'll be going back with bells on next time I'm up. Also, my other half is GLUTEN FREE and there was loads for her to choose from on the menu. So she had what she wanted and she enjoyed it just as much as I did.

Callum was outstanding. My wife is lactose intolerant and eating out usually is a proper chew on. She will resort to ordering from the vegan menu for ease which is disappointing for a meat eater. Callum made her feel as though she was catered for and provided all the information needed to allow her to order from the standard menu with confidence. He was attentive and friendly. Food was special as it always is. Best place for burgers in Newcastle by a mile. Will definitely be back soon.
