Just purchased 2 ice creams today from the most rude, dismissive assistant I’ve come across in a very long time. No manners whatsoever, kept us waiting at the counter, didn’t even acknowledge us even though we were standing directly in front of her as she was cleaning the ice cream machine. Had my card in hand and met with a very abrupt “ cash only”. I could go on but won’t. Not my idea of customer service. Won’t be back!

Having been in the pub for a while, developed the munchies so we headed to the cafe to grab a snack for the walk back, upon entering we weren’t greeted & the lady behind the counter just continued to fill up the containers with sugar which I found rather rude, especially as there were another 2 customers behind us & tables to be cleared! That aside she did set them aside & asked for our order & it was worth waiting for, my latte was lovely & scorching hot, the sausage rolls were tasty & my friend stated it was the best cheese & onion pasty he’d ever had, as it was after 2.30 there was no hot food just drinks, bakery items, ice cream & a few tray bakes, initial impressions would not deter us from returning, very good value for money!

We called in here just for a coffee. But we decided to try their mince pies. They were very nuce. The lady who served us,asked if we needed any sauce. I said yes. Unfortunately she never come back. But not to worry the coffee and pies were good. Very clean and it has a 5 Star. So give this little coffee shop and try.

Visited for breakfast after reading reviews. Wouldn't return. The lady taking the orders was very abrupt. I asked if I could have two hash browns to go with my bacon roll. I was told I could, and charged/paid accordingly. No hash browns came with the roll. I went to the counter to ask, and the lady who was cooking asked if she could help. I explained I had asked and paid for two hash browns. She said they were not on the order, but would put me one on to cook. A while later I was served one hash brown. Did not feel comfortable to say again, I asked/paid for two!! Also, not sure why the bacon rolls were served in plastic bowls and not plates.

The first time I went into his cafe the two women in there were friendly. The second time, however, there were two different women. The woman behind the counter had me, my partner and my elderly father waiting far too long. Even if she said, "sorry, I won't be long," it would have helped. Anyhow, after commenting on the extortionate price of pie and chips (a small Scotch pie and chips would have cost £5.95), with a cup of tea costing a further £2.50 (one single tea bag), it would have been a dear do for not much in return. All I said was "That's a bit pricy isn't it?" And she replied "Well, we have to make a profit you know," but in a very derisive manner. On that I quickly told the others we were going due to her frosty attitude. I told her I was only giving her my opinion, and she said, "well go somewhere else then!" I'd traveled 20 miles to Stanhope and shall never ever go near that place again!

I popped in there this morning as we were in the area , I saw the Breakfast and asked if they could swap the hash brown for tattie scone ( typical Scotsmen) which they were only too delighted to do . Not a long wait , I ate it in my truck and popped back in to tell them it was fabulous and to make my day even more great , an absolute princess of a young lady came in with an infectious smile , what a wonderful little cafe and I will most certainly go back for more . Went here for breakfast with friends and our dog, Martha, who was offered a bowl of water as soon as we stepped through the door. Had al day breakfasts, asked for well done bacon, and everything arrived cooked exactly as we requested, along with a chopped up sausage in a tray for Martha. Food was lovely, and on leaving, Martha was given two more sausages which she had for her tea. Lovely clean premises, friendly staff and pleasant surroundings. Would definitely recommend.

We have used this cafe for breakfast and lunch almost daily prior to the current owners taking over the business. We have always recommended it to everyone. However- Upon at least two previous visits we have found some management staff to be quite abrupt and not particularly welcoming- we have also observed a member of staff (owner) leaving the cafe to clean the toilet (in the adjoins alley way) wearing her her work attire - she returned from this duty - did not wash her hands or change her apron- and continued immediately to clean tables and serve food to customers. However, we thought today we would give the place another chance. A similar issue occurred regarding toilet maintenance- a breakfast meal was served cold - had to be returned and was simply microwaved to reheat it...another egg was placed on the plate but as the lady said-“I smashed it”. When ordering our food - I said “please” - my change was put into my hand with the assistant shouting at the girl in the kitchen - (a lady had waited so long for a breakfast- That she asked to take it away) not even a smile or polite “thank you” I guess it’s lucky that she managed to drop it into my hand! I just feel that this is so sad- a great spot for business- but when you look closely- management and customer care skills are greatly lacking and hygiene is of great concern

Called in at 4.30 on Bank Holiday Monday, and the staff clearly couldn't wait to get home.Ordered a cheese scone and requested it be served cold and a fruit scone, both of which were sitting on the counter display, and tea for two. Tea came - two big pots (one would have been enough) and we waited and waited for the scones. About 10 mins later, they arrived. The waitress mumbled something about my scone being warm because it had been freshly made, but it had clearly been microwaved as it was not crisp. The butter was quite clearly margarine. We will not be back.

I love tea but drink it all the time. I opted for a chai latte - I've had a few of these at other establishments and it is supposed to be quite a sweet tasting drink with a bit of a ting to it and has a distinctive smell and taste. This drink was foul and tasted very sour and quite vile. I'm wondering if it had been made with water as apposed to milk which could have affected the taste. An expensive drink with a bitter taste. I'll stick to tea at least I know what I'll be getting in future.

Lovely bakers and coffee shop, Lattes were really good and the gluten free carrot cake was amazing. When you have coeliac you can’t always find somewhere that provides gluten free especially in small villages but I would definitely recommend Peggotty’s! We’ll be back.
