Probably one of the best Japanese restaurants in Liverpool. Food is always so tasty. Service is great. All the staff are so friendly and attentive. Atmosphere is so chilled and enjoyable. It is kind of like tapas that your food will come when it’s ready but they do ask if you want it all together. We like getting ours as it comes. The food is so fresh and all made to order. 100% recommend.

I went with my partner for dinner and although we're not massive sushi eaters, we really enjoyed the food and have been converted! Staff were lovely, food was great, and atmosphere was pleasant. There is a large selection on the menu, there is definitely something for everyone. We really enjoyed the spider rolls, and tried a few unique sushi options (some we really enjoyed, some we realised weren't to our taste such as the sashimi but that's on us!) I'd recommend the Sakura Roku gin as it was one of the best gins I've ever had. For dessert I got the matcha pound cake, which was delicious - although it seemed really dry at first, it actually works in its favour. It's a bit of a walk from Liverpool One city centre, but we will definitely come back when we fancy sushi again.

The staff are very friendly and the restaurant is spacious. However, the sushi is insanely overpriced. £9 for 4 small pieces of any of the rolls. The Etsu roll is also very misleading, the roll is made with essentially the scraps of fresh tuna and mixed with mayo and added to the top of the roll (which is stuffed with cucumber…!) The sashimi slices are average but again, extremely small. The taste is fine but not memorable in any way. If the prices were 30-50% less then I could recommend this if you want average sushi.

We have chosen this restaurant based on the reviews however unfortunately it was not a pleasant experience for us, as a family of three. To start with, the staff was not welcoming or friendly, when I was trying to keep one menu to order later again, I have had the serving lady pulling the menu from my hands- was weirdly surprised. Additionally, the sushi selection was not as spectacular as expected, did not have much choices. Overall, I would not recommend the restaurant or think of going back again.

Everyone must visit Etsu!!! The whole experience from the food to the service was flawless. I had the eel donburi and the chefs nigiri selection, it was the best food I have had in a long time. We had dinner here. Food was amazing and authentic, service was great. The lady who seems to be the manager was very attentive and nice though it was very hectic for her working behind the bar. I had apple gyoza for dessert. OH MY GOD! It was soooo good with very good balance of favours. Yuzu sorbet was very refreshing. If we live closer to Liverpool, we would come here all the time!

The food here was really excellent. Like an authentic, high-end sushi place in Japan (which I say having visited Tokyo three times). We were visiting from the U.S. and are pretty picky with our sushi. This definitely met and exceeded our bar…comparable nigiri and tempura as in Tokyo (in terms of style and freshness)…better than most sushi we run into in the U.S. They didn’t have all the common “American” rolls (for example no fake crab sticks so no “American California rolls” if you’re expecting that—I don’t say that as a negative at all, just an fyi), but there were flexible where they had the ingredients, and everything “new” we tried for the first time was impressive and memorable. Definitely highly recommended if you like sushi and have high standards. Prices were very reasonable for the high quality of food.

We had such high hopes for our meal but we're bitterly disappointed. The service was lovely to begin with. Warm welcome and smiles all round. The decor was cute except for the origami birds handing above us that were coated in dust. The gyoza were very mushy but the worst was the spider roll. I took one bite and the juice from the crab was foul. I explained this too my waitress, in the hope she'd replace with a fresh, she just told me okay, her demeaner changed and they even still charged me for it. Won't be recommending to anyone.

A fantastic meal at a reasonable price served by very friendly and attentive staff. I had all three of the daily specials and a Japanese panna cotta with fresh fruit topping for desert. This was the first time I had ever had a Japanese curry (beef) and it was delicious, as were all the other courses and the warm green tea. Given the quality of the food and the very comfortable surroundings, the bill of £44 before tips seemed very reasonable indeed. The next time I am in Liverpool I will certainly be returning. In fact, I might even make a special outing from Manchester when I am next there in May.

We went to celebrate a birthday. Choose it partially because their social media page has been saying business was slow which made us sad. It was always a nice place, and we had remembered it as packed and thriving. This meal was absolutely amazing and we will continue to go both to "vote with our feet" and to enjoy it whilst the atmosphere is low key and lovely for a quiet meal. Arrived earlier than our reservation on a rainy Sunday evening which was no problem. Chose the chef's choice mixed sushi plate first and we were delighted! Unlike the chain sushi place nearby, it wasn't only tuna and salmon but also seabream, surf clam, octopus, mackerel, yellowfin tuna and more. All very fresh - perfect. The sushi was presented as an art form, as I remember it from the favourite sushi places I've been - much more like a California Japantown. Edible flowers, lovely fine seaweed. The chef treats it as the delicacy it is which adds to the experience, I think. And, by the way the lovely server who brought it sang a few lines of the birthday song very quietly to us, which was really cute. She could tell my companion would be embarrassed by a fuss. The platter arrived with a single lit birthday candle. Celebratory but not over the top. After the variety sampler, it was time for each of us to finish with one of our favourites. My companion chose a softshell crab dragon roll which was coated in flying fish roe. Beautifully presented and delicious. I had a simple five pieces of mackerel sashimi presented on a bed of seaweed. The mackerel had some extra prep. I think it was very mildly pickled which was lovely. We shared these as well, but only a little. The bill was reasonable and there was no "service charge" or suggested tip added to it. We tipped well as we enjoyed it and want it to succeed. This restaurant is only slightly off the beaten path, and travel from James Street is easy! I highly recommend it. There must be a collosal waste of resources here for them not to compromise on quality when they aren't very busy. I would urge you to go. We will certainly make this a higher priority and go in January. And we'll take advantage of the quiet there until business is booming again. A final note is that while steak restaurants seem to be the latest trend in Liverpool, a visit to this place reminded me of how lovely it is to dine on a lighter cuisine that's always valued vegetables and fresh fish. No calorie regrets afterwards, no feeling stuffed for hours.

On 24Nov2023 at around 6:15pm UK local time, me and mom was on the way back after paying a visit to Liverpool’s pier. My mom (70+ years old) was needing the toilet after the walk, and we tried to find one around but the museums were closed. Asked around and some advised to try the restaurants nearby. After some walk we found this restaurant and walked into it, seeing that no customers were inside at the moment (or very few). We asked if we can use the washroom/toilet, and the waitress said yes which was very kind of her. But then a waiter (don’t know his name, but looks like an Asian maybe from Japan or China) quickly said “actually it’s only for customers”. We turned away and left, then the waiter swiftly followed behind me and close the door immediately after we just stepped out, probably fearing that we might return or feel like we have wasted his time without paying. While they indeed have all the rights to refuse our request since it is a private property, you might want to think if their values aligned with yours, before supporting them with your hard-earned money, especially when you might have other choices of place in mind.

The best Japanese restaurants in Liverpool and the North. A solo diner I was. I ordered a delicate sample of their menu. Hot, crispy, boldly infused with favour; the Tofu is so good I must order 2x on next visit. In Britain, most Japanese restaurants can’t make a proper dish of soft shell crab. Etsu can. It’s so juicy. The shell is signably soft. And you get the whole crab! The sushi set is authentic. And I love their confidence. Scallop is great. Oh and it is a proud family business.

Had breakfast here, and I decided to treat myself. Pancakes with bacon. Ordered black coffee & my b'fast. Pancakes cooked to order & very fluffy... On paying, I asked if the pancakes were made to order, which the response was yes. Was told they were vegan, which blew my mind as I suffer from IBS & egg whites are a trigger for me. (You are probably wondering why you would have pancakes if egg whites are a trigger. Sometimes, you just want a little guilty pleasure) On hearing they were vegan made made my morning, so no IBS for me... Coffee & breakfast £13.50, definitely will be back. Fantastic value for money. Thank you .
