I've been a regular patron at 88 for many years. The food is excellent, they have a wide selection of tea and they even have vegan options that taste great. It is my go to place for cake and tea. The staff are always polite, warm and welcoming. My only complaint is that it's not open longer! Wonderful establishment.

On entering the empty cafe we waited to be served. 4 behind the counter doing what they needed to do in an empty cafe. We eventually go acknowledged and placed our order, sat down and waited, waited, waited. In between it was like friends and family visiting. We dared to asked when we were getting our soup and was shot down by the girl in charge. Soup was nice, wait time was terrible and customer service was shocking. Would not like to see them on a busy day.

Visited with a friend and my dog, food was absolutely delicious. Unusual quirky menu which I was a little unsure of at first, but I was pleasantly surprised. We had soup and a filled wrap which was excellent, followed by coffee, hot chocolate and cake. Fresh ingredients, home made and very tasty. Staff were friendly and welcoming and my dog was made feel welcome too which is hugely important to me. We will definitely be back! Keep up the great work ladies! Exactly what Kirrie needs.

Was traveling up to Aberdeen, and used the chance to make a small detour into Kirriemuir to check out the Bon Scott Statue. After visiting the Statue, decided I would get a cup of coffee to see me through the final leg of my journey, and for 11am on a Sunday morning it was slim pickings, yet stumbled on Expresso 88, as it was about the only thing open, and had some life to it. Nice little dog friendly cafe that was surprisingly busy for a Sunday morning, yet not mobbed. Ordered a coffee to go and was on my way. Staff are really friendly.

This has long been our favourite place to stop in Kirriemuir when we cycle over from Coupar Angus. Today was the first visit since it has been under new management. Happy that it still offers imteresting lunch and brunch options, friendly staff and seems a lot more spacious somehow. The sourdough bread with the soup was really amazing and the cappuccino was lovely. Visited this lovely little cafe today whilst passing through Kirriemuir. A "cracking" find suggested by my friend whom I was out with. Very impressed with the decor and relaxed atmospere. Loved the idea of the cooks books that are free to browse through. But for me it was the array of freshly prepared homemade vegetarian dishes and cakes on the menu that was really the "icing on the cake" for me. Great to see such good choices for vegetarians! The quiche and salad was so delicious. Loved the variety of salad, couscous with the mouthwatering quiche! Had a lovely lunch and hope to re-visit again soon!

There is a blackboard menu with soups, quiches, innovative salads and some tempting looking cakes. There are magazines and newspapers on offer, and I am sure if I lived near Kirrie I woukd be calling in more often. We had couscous and carrot salad which was delicious and nicely presented. There is a communal table rather like the one at the larger Balmakewan near Brechin. People who know me will tell you that I'm a fusspot, so for me to say I cannot fault the quality and choice available at 88 degrees is high praise indeed.I travel a lot, both in the UK and Europe and it is always a relief to walk through the door at 88 knowing that I will get something delicious to eat. This is very definitely a cafe, not a restaurant, and the seating arrangements, portion sizes and opening hours are appropriate to a cafe. What is exceptional is the quality and choice available, this far exceeds anything I have found in cafés of a similar size in London or Prague. EVERYTHING is freshly prepared daily, on the premises. The menu changes on a daily basis, and requests for items not on the menu ( usually for children) are catered for with grace. It's all about the food here and that's the way I like it.

This place only opens when the owner feels so inclined. there seem to be no regular hours. When I eventually found it open, I was even more disappointed. Cramped - I don't appreciate being expected to sit at a communal table where a large party are already ensconced. The menu was poor - they seem to be trying to be 'French chic' and failing miserably - the coffee was good but the whole place is over priced, over crowded and completely lacking in atmosphere. The staff seemed only welcoming to their 'regulars' - not very friendly at all. There is a far better welcome at 'The Auld Surgery' along the street - better food and far better value too.

This is the best cafe I have ever had the pleasure to frequent. I have lived in London for many years and in France and nothing comes close to this little cafe. Returning to Scotland a few years ago we stumbled on 88 degrees and we have never looked back. It is the first place we take friends visiting from both the UK and abroad. They always rave about it and many have gone out of their way to make their own return journeys there. The food is to die for there is nothing on the menu that is not EXCEPTIONAL and the chocolates well all I can say is that Johanna's "adult snickers" should be on the list of 30 things you should do before you die !!!!!!!!.It is small and busy and sometimes we have to go for a coffee elsewhere until there is a space but we always wait as it truly is worth the wait. I am fat and I am never not comfortable there. When my mum was alive I even managed in with her in her wheelchair ! This is an unique place and combined with a visit to JM Barrie's birthplace/ The Glamis Folk Museum/The Glens / the Camera Obscura this would be a memorable trip to make from any part of Scotland or indeed from anywhere. Mention must go to the chocolate specialities done for Christmas and Easter unique, artistic and excellent value no gifts I have ever given have caused such excitement and pleasure. Thankyou you for enriching our experience of living in Angus Annie Baikie very fat !

The staff are freindly, the food healthy, the choise limited. My main gripe is the cramped nature of the place. Why set up a business in such a tiny premises? There was no privacy or space for the diner, 3 tiny tables and a sofa from where it is impossible to eat. A good business oportunity wasted. Not suited to children, or old people, or fat people. Big mistake to visit Kirriemuir on a Wednesday when a lot of things shut in the middle of the day, just when you are looking for somewhere to eat. My niece wand I were peckish and could only find 88 degrees cafe, which from the outside looked alright. We walked in and got a seat no problem. Looking at the menu narrowed down the choices for both of us I am afraid. My niece is not a fussy child and I can eat just about anything, but this cafe is quite specialised. The soup wasn't something that was to our taste if I remember. The only things we could have on the menu were the croque monsieur and my niece croque madame, which is a posh toasted ham & cheese sandwich with a cheese mixed with creme fraiche on top and toasted and the other is with egg. They are served on a small wooden chopping board with a small mound of grated carrot, which would have been fine, but it had a dressing on it that my niece couldn't eat - it would be nice to be asked it we wanted dressing. My niece did really like the mint hot chocolate which the staff did cool down with milk as I told them it was for an 8 year old. I had sparkling mineral water that came with a tiny glass. There wasn't even anything for dessert that we could have. I would say this is a place for adults with a certain taste, but not for children and I'm afraid not for me, sorry.

I'd checked the internet for cafes in Kirriemuir before we drove there for a few hours on Saturday and this one looked interesting. 18 seats crammed into a small space created a good atmosphere. The choices on the menu included lots of top quality ingredients and what was delivered was very tasty. Two minor quibbles - if you get a table with the small tools there is nowhere to hang your coat and I ordered the croque madame which was served on a smallish wooden board, and once you cut into it the yolk ran out over the board and onto the table.

I love the fact that the menu's not too big; makes it much easier to choose what to have out of what you will know will be a gorgeous lunch. We live South of Dundee so try, when we can, to make a habit of going up here whenever we get a chance. The last time we were there, the specials mostly involved a gorgeous goats cheese and their salads are superb.Cakes are great too; not a huge selection but obviously very very fresh and tasty.Coffee - ok, that might be my only criticism as I don't think the girl tamped it properly last time I went and it went through a bit quick but I'm super fussy about my coffee.Other thing is that it's very good value. In fact, I think some of their specials are underpriced for the quality of the ingredients they are using. Not been for a few weeks so am overdue a visit.

One of my fav places to visit for tea and cake when i visit Kirriemuir. A must try is the 88 salad dressing and nothing better than sitting watching the world go past as you enjoy the most amazing hand made chocolates.

Happened upon this little gem by chance. It's an absolute gem that would stand its ground in a much more cosmopolitan setting. Joanna the owners home baking is first class and the coffee she uses was also of top qualityVery friendly and welcoming atmosphere a d she was more than happy to provide her recipes! Not open Monday or tuesday

Sometimes the shop is open, sometimes it isn't. It is the same story in Forfar. Don't get me wrong, food and coffee wonderful, but with irregular opening hours it is irritating. Prices are a little steep too!

Perfect coffee, good food and some newspapers...always a treat when in Kirrie if you can get a seat...although it's not open every day. Tasty light meals, cakes etc all delicious. Well worth a visit.

Lovely feel to this cafe, enhanced by the wonderful cakes, cheese and chocolates on display. best latte I've had in a while too. Sampled the cakes - well, some of them, but sadly didn't have enough time to also sample the fantastic lunch platters that we saw others eating.Lots of locally sourced food, lots of brilliant ingredients, and plenty of wee foody gifts to buy and take away too. Best to know that it's shut on Monday and Tuesday but open at the weekend as far as i know.Highly recommended.

Good fresh food, although the menu isn't very varied if your looking for lunch It's in a lovely setting and there's a small play park for children. Dogs are allowed and well catered for. There's plenty parking but this is where I felt badly let down. There is no allocated disabled parking! There was a challenging walk on my crutches from the carpark to the cafe as the surface isn't very wheelchair friendly. With the space available in sure there is an easy remedy and I'm sure we'll come back for more of the good food and see if they resolve the parking for the disabled.

The view from the dining room was lovely and the staff were super friendly and welcoming, unfortunately, the food was not great. The lasagne tasted like a poor-quality frozen ready meal and the mac 'n' cheese was not very nice. The chips were good, though. Unfortunately, for several days afterwards I had an upset stomach. Apparently, due to staff shortages, their menu was reduced and maybe they didn't have the qualified staff who usually prepare the food. Maybe we were just unfortunate and did not sample their food at its best.

Friendly staff, good service. Nice to sit outside and look out over the harbor. They do not serve food anymore, but they do have an ice cream bar daytime. Fair prices on the beer.

I've visited this cafe many times as we stayed outside Alyth numerous times throughout the year and more so when my sisters cancer was terminal. The reason I'm back today is to visit where their ashes were scattered as both my mom and sister are scattered here together. (We live in Wales) I would agree with many other reviews on here that this is not the friendliest cafe considering how lovely it is. I will point out that most times when the younger girls serve, they're very pleasant. I was here on Monday for tea and cake and the young blonde lady serving was absolute lovely and gave me the WiFi password, as I've also had on previous trips when I've asked. Nothing worse sitting on your own, Billy no mates and can't use your phone. Today I'm stretching and getting signal on and off. Anyhow, I came In today, Wednesday 16 October, no hello.. nothing. Sat down and rude woman appeared with pen and notepad..no hello.. just are you ready to order or do you need another minute? No smile, no pleasantries. I ordered I then went up to look for the password only for her to tell me there isn't one.. you can't have WiFi as we don't have it. I said it's showing up .. and I got it on Monday. No you didn't as we don't give it out... if everyone uses it our tills don't work.. Really ??? 🤔🤔😶🌫️ I said once again I got it on Monday. - no you didn't !! OK.. seemingly I'm a liar now 🙄🙄😔 Honestly I doubt I'll be back here as clearly the same woman, older, glasses and not a scottish accent I don't believe, Blue in her hair this time. You'd think after many complaints they'd do something about this.. unless she's the actual owner.. which sadly I hope not.. She does not make visiting conditions pleasant .
