Old country house hotel & a bit dated. We had a problem when we tried to book in which was totally my fault( I had the wrong day) but the good lady sorted us out. Our room was small but we were advised of that in advance but functional. However there was no shower, only a permanent attachment from the bath taps & the water pressure was poor. Room decor was a bit dated but was probably in keeping with the house. The bar area was small but had a good selection of drinks. Breakfast was o.k.. Staff seemed to rush around so it did not feel relaxing. Maybe they could slow down a bit. Also the chap came over as soon as we sat down to take our order. Maybe again, give the guest a bit of time to relax. Strange that everything was from the pre-printed menu. It would be nice to stroll over & pick your cereal, juices etc and then place your hot food order. Also maybe look at the breakfast times 8- 9.30am seemed tight. Maybe extend it out to 10. Location was excellent & a very short drive down to Newcastle.

It tells you a lot that the locals love this place. It's a great inn with terrific staff. Every view from our room was like a portrait. Although it sits on a hill away from the sea, the drive time to the water is about three minutes. Keep this on your short list of places to stay! Internet connectivity is dodgy so if you need it for business, keep that in mind!

We spent 5 nights at the Enniskeen Country House. We highly recommend the restaurant (as well as the hotel). Traditional Irish and vegetarian options are proposed, very good service, very quiet place with beautiful views on the Moune Mountains. High tea is recommended as well.

We had the most wonderful lunch this week. The food was delicious and there was plenty of choice. I have to eat a gluten free diet and The Enniskeen was gluten free heaven. In many restaurants I often end up with only one pudding choice and it’s frequently ice cream. Here I had a choice of 5 and the warm orange honey cake was superb. I really appreciate the choice and how well informed the staff were. Lovely people and great quality of food. Thank you

Thoroughly enjoyed our recent dinner at the Enniskeen Country House. It is liking dining in a bygone era. The dining room is large, with high ceilings, and a commanding view of the Mourne Mtns. Just lovely. We had the fixe prix menu which included an appetizer, bread, main course, potatoes and vegetables, and dessert for 38 pounds. The quality of the food, service, and ambiance were excellent.

Called here to take my Dad for dinner as Fathers day was coming up. Only one other party in the dining room, I'm not surprised. Two of our party had the fish of the day, don't know what day it was caught but it tasted like it came straight from the freezer. This has to rate as one worst dining experiences I've had.

Unfortunately the beautiful scenery of the Mournes was not matched by the dinner - bland and unimaginative to say the least. I had the salmon with a miniscule slice of lemon the side, no herbs or garlic flavours. My partner had the lamb - very thinly sliced, mint sauce on the side was the only garnish.

My wife and myself booked for an evening meal for 6.30pm we arrived 15 minutes early this was our first time at this restaurant. We spoke to a lady in reception who brought us to a table still in reception we thought our table was not ready. We were handed a sheet of paper which was the menu and it became obvious this was our table. We did not complain. We were sitting under the stairs beside the open entrance to the bar with staff walking in and out past us.We eat one course paid and left .

I had both Afternoon Tea and a hearty breakfast in this beautifully appointed, spacious, and naturally-lit restaurant. Unrushed and relaxing! Hygiene was excellent and distancing was easily practised - with tables a good distance apart. The service was superb on both occasions. I was the only guest present for a late "Afternoon Tea" - at 5 pm. It was very nicely presented and efficiently served (by Eileen - a personable, friendly, "hands-on", Manager - who had arranged my seating to give me a splendid view of the Mourne Mountains! The quantity and quality of my meals were good and the quiet, classical music playing in the background, added to the ambience. At 8 am, I was just one of two clients using the Breakfast Room, so the atmosphere and table service were superb; just like "Downtown Abbey!" I enjoyed my, locally-sourced, Ulster Fry! Prices reasonable. Highly recommended.

We booked for Sunday Lunch in what looked to be a lovely period Hotel; what a disappointment! The food, whilst fresh for the most part, was totally uninspiring. The portion sizes were miniscule and the presentation was lacklustre to say the least. The food was bland, as exemplified by the fact that the stuffing in the Turkey and Ham consisted of breadcrumbs, butter and a miniscule amount of onion, resulting in a total lack of flavour. The "melange" of vegetables consisted of micro portions of frozen peas and cauliflower, with a bland sauce which had a very vague hint of cheese. There was one miserable roast potato on each plate, augmented by a scant portion of boiled potatoes. The Turkey and Ham were acceptable in terms of quality but the portion of ham was barely discernable on the plate. Feeling rather disappointed with the main course, we were hoping that the dessert would redeem our faith in the establishment. Alas, we were sorely disappointed. The majority of the party ordered Lemon Meringue but, unfortunately, the "lemon" was conspicuous by its absence. Indeed, the only thing that reassured us that it might have been Lemon Meringue was the fact that the filling was yellow! Whilst we were anticipating a zing from the zest of the lemon to awaken our weary tastebuds, we were again sadly disappointed as it had absolutely no flavour, let alone a lemon flavour. All in all the dining experience was extremely disappointing, and this was further exacerbated by the tired and very outdated decor which was consistent with a poorly maintained 1970s establishment. The setting is absolutely beautiful, and the period building is delightful apart from the ghastly 1970s porch, extension and internal decor. The fabric of the hotel would benefit greatly from a very sympathetic, sensitive restoration to reinstate period details and charm. Furthermore, the "cuisine" is in urgent need of a radical overhaul to ameliorate the deficiencies in the current offering. Only by implementing such changes will the hotel be fit for purpose as a 21st century dining establishment.

Just home from an overnight stay at The Enniskeen. We were with a group of friends, celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. From arrival to departure we were met with nothing but exemplary service. Our room was fabulous with a breathtaking view to the Mournes. We were fortunate with the weather which enabled us to sit out on our balcony and enjoy the view. The meal was excellent in every respect, the table was beautiful laid out and the service with a smile was perfection . We then went out for the evening but came back to have a night cap in the bar. The barman was a real gentleman in every sense of the word and nothing at all was a bother to him. He was on his own but again no delay in service and all done with a kind word and a smile. Had one of the best nights sleep I have had in a long time, woke to an amazing view. We had arranged for our party to have breakfast at the same time and we were served by a charming young waitress. It was quite a complex order, for ten people , but she got it perfect and the breakfasts were fresh and tasted wonderful. The only negative was having to leave , but already we can't wait for a return visit. Thank you Eileen and all the staff for making our friends special occasion one that was perfect in every way .

Myself and my partner went to this hotel to book his 60th birthday party next year as his live in Newcastle. His family never use this hotel so we thought it would make a nice change. He ordered Chicken Maryland it came with no pineapple, tomato or bacon fritter so basically half the meal was missing and the batter on the three fritters that were present were inedible as very fatty! I asked about vegan options and the response was very poor I was told they only had a vegetarian option of lasagne. I said I don’t eat dairy! Was told sorry we have nothing and he walked away. So I started looking at sides to try and make a meal from the list (the usual go to meal for vegans of chips and salad 🙄) I was then told I could have an avocado and beetroot salad and was quickly told I’d have to pay same as catch of the day (money was not object, a decent meal was what I wanted). Both meals were priced at £12.95 plus £2.50 for sides (very small portions of sides of chips and wedges). My main sized salad was nice but in fact was a starter sized salad and I’d already had a salad that day as I was looking forward to a nice substantial evening meal. However, sides and salad were my only option at Enniskeen. Very old fashioned menu and attitude towards people’s food choices My pint of Guinness was also “off” with a weird head of brown watery bubbles and scummy type stuff. Not a nice creamy head how it should be served. I would never have given this pint to anyone! Visually you could see it was off! It tasted flat too and wasn’t very cold. Second one was much better and colder too! View from the hotel of the Mourne Mountains was amazing and hotel itself was beautifully kept but sadly we were very disappointed with both service from both of the staff and the meals. My partners coffee was nice he said.

The hotel and grounds are absolutely charming, and very Irish. Plants are well taken care of, lawn is groomed, and there is a nice little walking trail down to the river you can amble down after dinner. Back to the Enniskeen while visiting family and enjoyed another lovely stay in a comfortable room with beautiful view. The service is exemplary - Eileen, Ian and their staff could not do enough for the guests, which is why different bits of our family choose to stay there when we're visiting – two years ago, a group of ten of us had a lovely stay and this time it was also great for the two of us. We had really good bar food on the first evening and dinner on the second night – the food is of a high standard, much of it locally sourced. Ian keeps a good cellar and wines are very reasonably priced. We had a lovely time and look forward to our next visit.

I ordered the Chicken Supreme and my friends had Roast Beef and Pork Fillet with apple sauce. It was delicious. We all had the fan of melon for starter which was very refreshing. For dessert we had the warm orange and almond honey cake, a honey mallow sundae and a banoffee pie with cream followed by filtered coffee. A wonderful meal for our family, exciting choices, fresh quality food and attentively served, all in a fantastic setting overlooking the Mournes. Very reasonably priced, too, for such a top class restaurant, we thought. I will make sure we come again when we are next in Newcastle. We had afternoon tea on our arrival and it was outstanding, far superior to many we have had in some top Belfast hotels. We called in for lunch after a trip to Tollymore Park and were delighted to be able to take our wet dogs to an outside terraced area at the back. We chose from the bar menu which was reasonably priced and my smoked salmon and philadelphia open sandwich was delicious with good quality smoked salmon. Most of the menu used locally sourced fish, meat etc and the unpretentious evening menu's (early and a la carte) looked very tempting. The views of the Mournes from the back terrace and dining rooms were delightful and we also discovered a lovely woodland path down to the river before leaving.

We (my wife, son (3-and-a-half) and myself) stayed at Enniskeen Country House Hotel for 1 week during November 2017 but it felt like we were back in 1917. When we arrived we were transported back in time to a bygone age. The welcome we received was warm and friendly as if we were family friends. The great house was always warm with roaring fires and background music filled the air. The staff were amazing and we knew all their names before the first day was at an end. We awoke to a morning chorus of various birds and the stunning view from our panoramic position were simply breathtaking. Our room was absolutely perfect as we had a full turret at the top of the great house. On our first morning we were greeted for breakfast and our reserved table was set like a military parade ground. The breakfast was 5-star with a myriad of choices and prepared to perfection. The evening meals were Michelin-starred with each nights changing menu delivering perfection on a plate but with generous helpings through all four courses. Each meal was served with perfect timing and my family and I were treated like VIPs at every meal! Alas our week was at an end and we had to return to 2017 and the stark reality that we were not foreign nobility wintering at our home in the Mournes. We will return "another time".

We had a group of 9 here for a family meal, very welcoming atmosphere and the staff are very attentive, the barman very knowledgeable about local beers, ciders and wine and took his recommendation, which was great, hard to beat Kilmegan ! The Dinner was lovely, and the waiting staff were great, I have seen a few reviews that say the menu is dated, but while it may not be as adventurous as some of the "trendy" restaurants, the food they served was first class, we had a variety of dishes, probably sampled the majority of what was on the menu in our group and all of it was without fault. We come here a few times a year as a family group and will continue to do so, the one thing that did let it down slightly in comparison to previous years was the portion sizes of the sides which seem to have shrunk significantly, we ended up having to double up on everything, otherwise it would have been an excellent review, but that being said it was a very enjoyable meal and dining experience in general, and will be bringing another different family group here soon.

My family visited the eniskeen for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately our visit was like attending an open day in an old people's home. I am not discriminating against the elderly and yes all other patrons seemed in their 70's but the management have obviously tailored their food to suit their core clientele. The food was very plain/dull and portions miniscule. A Yorkshire pudding the size of a golf ball a dessert gone in 3 spoonfuls, watery tasteless gravy, 2 thin slices of roast beef, it was school dinner/hospital/nursing home food standard at best for £22 for 3 courses. I would still have felt short changed at £10. The management in this establishment need to have a rethink, it is a great venue or could be if refurbed (currently a cross between old country house and 70s decor) and the service was good but if they don't take stock they will suffer as their key customer demographic departs through the pearly gates!

The decor is old fashioned and traditional but no trendy boutique hotel will give you this kind of personal service. Just a few examples - a request for extra veg on night one brought automatic extra helpings the next ; an enquiry about the quality of drinking water brought bottles deposited in the room each night ; a request for a camomile tea brought a supply left in the room. All quiet and without fuss the staff just noticed what we liked and worked to deliver. The meals, while unadventurous, gave us top quality fish and meat well cooked and accompanied. Breakfasts excellant and hw nice to escape the usual buffet. Served freshly cooked on hot plates and to order. This is a great welcoming base and I'd highly recommend it.

The menu offers some modern as well as traditional tastes for all tastes. The dining room is wooden panelled tables flexible but can be crowded. View is absolutely terrific really worth a visit for evening meal or Afternoon Tea ( this place has been serving afternoon tea for over 40 years). I used to go with 2 old Aunts and regard it as the home of afternoon tea in Newcastle. Good food terrific service.

We celebrated our full wedding day at Hugh McCann's in October 2024. We'd like to start by saying that absolutely everything was perfect!! Lee was our wedding coordinator and point of contact, and his passion and flair for the role did not go unnoticed. He is incredibly thorough and flexible for all the pre and post celebration sets. His courtesy and professionalism on the day to both my wife and I, and all of our guests was very much appreciated. The staff at McCann's are extremely hard working and dedicated to helping us create the wedding of our dreams. Sandra was there to assist with any requests and was closely connected to the top table to ensure we were well looked after. The venue itself is situated beautifully between the foot of Slieve Donard and the seaside. It's backdrop panoramic views offer an incredibly unique and picturesque view of the gorgeous Irish countryside. Our 3 course meal could not have been nicer. The food was clearly freshly prepared and served with speed and efficiency. There were a number of excellent alternatives which catered for dietary and allergen requirements. The venue itself holds an incredible country-like character. However it also lends itself to individual-specific tastes, themes and decorations. Our feedback from friends and family alike shares a common trend of happiness, impressive and special. A fantastic selection of drinks are available at the multiple bars within the venue. The immediate grounds outside offer multiple beautiful locations for pictures regardless of the seasons. All in all, we have absolutely only positive feedback for Lee and all the staff at Hugh McCann's. They helped us massively in creating the wedding of our dreams, and we cannot wait to attend another wedding there. Best wishes, M&T
