Visited with husband and 2 grown up children before a show. The menu is quite compact but we all managed to choose different dishes so we could try everyone's! We had crostini, fishcakes and blaggis to start. All perfectly pleasant. The crostini in particular was popular. Our mains again were lovely although I found the pork a little dry and uninspiring, the mash could have been creamier. The star of the show was the onion rings we ordered on the side - these are delicious. We didn't have time for pudding so asked for the bill. This took a while to come. When it did arrive, we noticed one of the bottles of wine hadn't been added. We pointed this out and it was taken away to be amended. We again waited a LONG time, the kids went upstairs to the bar and a server eventually returned the same bill saying they couldn't fix it and just to add the price of the wine on it! I didn't find this very professional and was actually a bit uncomfortable as I tried to work out how much we owed whilst also trying to sort out a tip! It really spoiled the end of what had been quite a nice meal. To sum up, probably wouldn't visit again The food is fine, the environment pleasant and handy obviously for the theatre! However, whilst nice enough, I found the servers to be a bit unsure and not terribly skilled in the execution of their job.

Great festive menu - with a very wide selection of food to suit all tastes. Beer selection was not as advertised however - so a slight letdown that local beers replaced with Isle of Skye brewery. Service a little slow at times, and I cannot recall anyone checking on us and how we felt the meal was. But overall very good - and we will visit again.

Pleasant staff and food order taken and drink arrived promptly. Then I waited and waited and waited. No explanation and studiously ignored. Quite an achievement in a small restaurant! It was over 30 mins before my fish and chips arrived. The food was perfectly ok, nothing special but nicely presented. They have a very limited menu and although there were a good crowd in the restaurant was not full. For a pre theatre dinner slow service like this is unacceptable. Coffee was rushed

Top notch food and service. Went to the Dundee Rep restaurant twice in a week for lunch over the festive period. First visit was on a Saturday late afternoon and then again on the 22nd Dec. We were very warmly greeted by the staff & shown to our table. As starters one of us had hot salmon pate and 2 went for red pepper polenta fritters. Delicious! For mains , turkey with all the trimmings and two of us opted for featherbed of beef. The beef was so tender and fell apart. The turkey was equally delicious. For sweets we had Baileys creme brulee with salted star shaped biscuits, limoncello cheesecake, scottish cheese board ,oatcakes, frozen grapes with juniper and plum jam. The plates were warm for the hot dishes. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal and thought it was very reasonably priced. The atmosphere was really warm and friendly with a low background level of music. The staff were friendly, attentive and were happy to chat or share a laugh or two. They, the chef and kitchen staff deserve plaudits for the quality of food and the level of service given and we were happy to leave a tip which reflected the good meal and service. All in all a great time. Thank you to Eve and the staff. Highly recommend going here , it is a local gem.

The setting, service and atmosphere is very good but the jackfruit, butterbean and coconut curry was just a (small) bowl of flavour free, grey mush. NO flavour of coconut at all and just 5 tiny mini poppadoms (like the bags you can buy in the supermarket) and one of those was dark brown and overcooked. So very disappointing. This would have been a one star review for the food except that my friend's trout was good and the waitress was excellent. Plus the convenience of eating pre-theatre on site is great. Sadly, I won't be eating here again in a hurry.

We ate hear before a performance. Booking is advised as there are not a lot of tables. There is an a la carte menu or set price 2 or 3 course meals. There was a good choice and the food was freshly cooked and well -presented. I had haddock while my other half had pork loin. There were vegetarian options. They are also open for lunch. There was a good range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and the atmosphere was relaxed.

We had a superb pre theatre meal tonight. A nice varied menu with two or three course options, although the up coming winter menu looks even better. We both opted for the two course menu with a main and dessert. I chose the belly of pork with the special of sticky toffee pudding with my wife opting for honey roasted pulled gammon chicken & leek pie followed by summer berry sundae, all courses were very nice however my vegetables were cold but quickly rectified by Amanda who made our evening special. Thanks Amanda

I attended a large group supper here in May. Set three course menu. All I had was the pudding. Neither of the first two courses were things I could eat. That was not the fault of the Rep although one would have thought they might have advised the organisers against goats cheese. What was disappointing was that there was no offer of anything else However back I went / for lunch - in June. Had the famed haddock goujons with fries (not chunky chips). Superb. Crispy batter, succulent fish. Excellent

We ate here last Saturday before a concert. We had two courses for £16 and a couple of drinks and coffee. Great value and really decent food. I am gluten free and although there was only one gf starter to choose from there were several main dishes. The butterfly chicken with chips and pepper sauce was really good. We would try to eat here again, if coming to the the rep. Very helpful and friendly wait staff also.

I eat here often and agree with the person who said its one of the few places to get a good salad. I had the pan fried cod on mashed potaoes with asparagus and it was delicious. My husband chose the haddock goujons and chips which unfortunately were not. We were amongst the first diners and had to wait approx half an hour on our meal . I dont think the fat was hot enough for crispy haddock . It was very insiped and soggy as were the chips. My husband was hungry and didnt want to complain as we didnt have time for a replacement. He let me try a bit and I would have sent that meal back He hardly touched the chips. I spotted a lady accross from us having the same dish later and hers looked like it should have done. Golden and crispy. Some you lose?

He visto a los chefs ir y venir.

Although the Rep Restaurant (Encore) ideally caters for theatre goers we weren't there to see a show but only to dine somewhere close to where we were staying - chosen for its very good menu as seen on-line and also very pleasantly impressed by the choice and the prices on offer. As a theatre restaurant it doesn't present itself as a bijou intimate dining experience - but don't let that put you off in the slightest.

We've been eating here on and off since 2001, but in recent years the quality had gone consistently downhill for us. We gave it another chance last night, and I'm pleased to say that we were wowed by how good it was. It was a mid week dinner, but still pretty busy by 6pm. We were eating here before nipping round to the DCA cinema. We ate a 3 course meal + coffee, and everything about it was superb. Service was welcoming, friendly and efficient. The menu was extensive, and we were very much spoilt for choice, struggling to choose between equally appealing options. And when the food arrived - oh it was great! Very high quality presentation, very well balanced flavours, and just the right amount to make you feel full but not unpleasantly stuffed. Every course was impressive, everything a real treat. Things we ate included shredded duck salad (refreshing and very tasty), fish cake (so glad to see the Rep restaurant still have that old favourite), haddock goujons and chips, and two quite amazing desserts. We kept saying "Wow!" throughout the meal - it was that good. And we left as two very happy customers, who will definitely be back, and hopefully soon. Highly recommend.

I always try to preface my visits to the Rep with a meal in this excellent brasserie. The two and three-course set menu, available if you arrive to dine before 6pm, is particularly good value, given the style and quality of the food, and the friendliness of the ever-obliging staff. There's no set offer at lunchtime, but with tasty soups, gourmet sandwiches and juicy burgers you can't really go wrong. Decent wine and puddings, too. Plan well and you can have a lovely meal and catch a performance by the highly-acclaimed resident company for £35 (about a fiver more if you add wine), making for a very satisfying night out.

Whilst I love the food and service at this restaurant, over the past few years the prices have been slowly creeping up and up. The lunch time menus is extremely over priced and that is possibly why it is so empty most of the time. The last time we were there Inwas £8.95 for my starter - yes my starter. It was only chicken coupons with a side salad with a tandoori flavouring in the natter, whilst they were excellent, you can get main courses at lunch time in better places. In fact 172 at the Caird, a top new restaurant does two courses for 8.99 at lunch time. Whilst I really adore the food, the place and the staff, their prices are shameful.

This was a pre-performance visit to the restaurant in Dundee's famous Rep Theatre. It was full to capacity, and serving staff were struggling a little with the volume of work. Reasonable vegetarian options for starter and mains, but the chestnut and mushroom casserole with sweet potato promised much, but delivered less. This is plain fare, but at attractive prices - 2 courses pre-show for £15.50 per person. However Encore has a lot of much finer dining competition in the locality, and will need to raise its game to ensure that audiences continue to default to eating in-theatre.

We arrived last Saturday for a lunch, we were welcome in the lovely restaurant of the Rep theatre by a very kind waitress who showed us our table. Great choice of wine and particularly of Prosecco, but the cherry on top was the food! Lovely to see and amazing to eat. Particularly liked the black pudding and applewood bonbons, the haddock goujons battered in gin and tonic and the homemade brownie on a bed of heavenly crushed pistachio nuts.We were really happy of our lunch and we are looking forward to another meal at Encore.

Lovely place to meet and catch up with old friends. Quiet at lunch time with great menu and great service. Be warned, the portion sizes are generous but that is always better than too little on the plate. Prices were also very reasonable and the service was first class. Shall return soon.

Pre theatre menu very good and the presentation of the food was lovely. Service initially was good but slowed up a little so keep in mind for start of performance timing. It was busy but I did find it a little noisy more due to the design than the volume of customers. Good value for money.

For a restaurant in a theatre you imagine that a pre theatre supper is down to a fine art but it's pretty chaotic. At a glance they serve a full dinner menu instead of a short menu that they can prep plate up and move with speed. When it came the food was good but the staff were wandering about looking for work while we all waited and waited for the poor chef to get the food out ! Just managed 2 courses. No time for pud or coffee. Shame cause the food was fine but we felt grumpy to be waiting so long for our courses and had to stop the wAitress clearing our side plates before any food had arrived !! Remedy is easy by selecting a smaller choice pre theatre and leaving off the courses that require extra cooking time till 7.30 on.

There were 4 at our table on Friday night and we all enjoyed our meal. We each had a starter and main and were very pleased with both the presentation and the content on our plates. Our waiter was very attentive and even brought me a piece of tablet when the other 3 were having coffee and I was not, which was much appreciated! We would all definitely book a pre-theatre dinner in the future to further enhance our experience of going to The Rep.

Had this restaurant recommended by the hotel receptionist on a recent weekend in Dundee. Apart from the limited availability of the steaks, the dining experience was great. Was there with a group of friends and all had starters which were very tasty. I can recommend the smoked fish tartlet! Mains were equally well received with just the right portion size and level of variety. Our young waiter deserves a mention. He was very friendly and knew just when to interact and when to leave us alone. The surroundings were adequate but with food and service of the quality we had, there were no complaints.Would definitely go back again.

Went for a pre theatre meal with a friend. Menu very limited, and rather disappointing. I didn't fancy anything I saw, and mentioned this to my friend. Our server offered to get something off the lunch menu for me, which I thought was a really lovely gesture. At this point I was impressed. Delight faded when the rush arrived. Obviously flung together with minimal effort and not even pleasant. Didn't eat it all. Hope it was just because the chef took a huff at being asked to produce something off menu. If that really was what they serve on the lunch menu, I sure don't want lunch there. Actually, in spite of the lovely gesture, I still won't go back. There are much better places to eat nearby.

We decided to have a date night at the Rep Theatre. To make it even better, we wanted to have a nice meal there beforehand.I made reservations but when we arrived and gave our names, they said they didn't have us. I showed them my reservation card and we were seated. Then we waited, and waited....Finally we got something to drink and menus. The man next to us, who was seated after us, got his drink, and starter before we were even able to order. On to the food. The starters were lovely. The main not so good. I think, because I was less than impressed by the service by now, my fish was much less spectacular than any of the others I saw come out. My husband had very tough mutton pretending to be lamb. At least from the toughness and strong flavour, we assumed it was not quite a lamb any longer. We decided to try to get in a coffee and dessert before showtime. It was close, but then neither were very hot so it managed to get done. We paid our bill and gave a tip of £7 by default. This was because the staff never brought back our change and the show was about to start!Dinner took 1 1/2 hours. I looked at the reservations list while waiting to leave (and hoping the staff would bring us our change) to see our names were the third on the list...Will be going to more shows but will misss out on any meals for a long time!

10/10 for flavour but they really need to look at their portion sizes. I would suggest a decent size serving spoon! The waitress struggled with a dessert spoon and I felt slightly cheated....

A very enjoyable pre theatre meal before am excellent show. Meal was very good with a varied choice , the Stornaway black pudding with poached egg as starter was very lovely as was the main course which at £15.00 for two courses was very good value and the wine range price wise was on par with others in the area . Service was excellent and also a bar upstairs where we had further drains and coffee before the show .

Went for a Christmas night out, small portions, bland food, terrible expensive wine-a real rip off for the price-poor vegetarians in our party had to pay £27.50 for a bowl of soup, vegetable risotto(No vegetables to be seen in it) and a piece of cheesecake. This would have cost pennies to make! Shame on you for ripping people off . Never again.

As a local resident, I have been going to The Rep for many years. Every year we buy tickets for the Christmas show. This year, I was extremely disappointed with the service at the bar upstairs..... At first we were surprised at the lack of queuing at the bar, it then became apparent that the staff were disorganised and rude. After ordering drinks for before the show and for the interval, a member of the bar staff informed us we would be better to buy a bottle, which they would be able to refrigerate for us until the interval. We were delighted that this helpful member of staff was able to offer this advice. However after paying for this bottle, then waiting ten minutes to be served at the bar, it had disappeared....the rude staff during the interval clearly did not think this was normal practice, and we're reluctant to resolve the issue. Leading to both embarrassment and frustration. Overall it was a disappointing visit to the Rep, mainly due to the staff, not the show itself. Terrible service!!

I was at the Rep for Scottish Dance last Thursday and had dinner in the restaurant. It has been rebranded since I was last there, which was a few years ago, and I must say it was really good! I had salmon cheesecake and my friend had the black pudding as starters and both were very good. We both decided to have the chicken pie for main course which was very tasty. Then the waitress even asked if we wanted to save the rest of our bottle of wine until after the performance. We will definitely be back for BFG!

I expected a lot from the Rep. Lots of people recommend it. Personally however I don't think it lives up to the hype. The food was average and thus overpriced for what it was. I would not hurry back.

In recent months I have been back to The Rep a few times for a meal and have found the place to improved in look, menu and service. During a previous visit 4 or 5 years ago I had such an awful experience I refused to go back. However I did, and am glad as the food was good, the service was excellent and I had a really good time. What I have really been impressed with is on return visits this level of service etc has been maintained. Was quiet one of the nights but I think there was no show on?

Had lunch on Saturday 9th November. It was superb. I had one course which was the red pepper risotto. Not an easy dish to get right. It was perfect, with little pea shoots as a trim it looked appealing and tasted great. Good chefs say you feed the eye before you eat and I do agree. This could have been a very bland looking dish but it had just the right amount of colour to finish it off and it certainly appealed to my eye. My companion had gougons of spicy haddock and was equally delighted. The service was also delightful. The atmosphere was really good. I'm so glad to see The Rep getting its oomph back.

Used to be a real favourite of mine. Now, with a change of staff and radical changes to the menu it's really gone downhill - such a shame. Recently went to lunch and the service was so slow....the food was OK - but it was almost empty. Says everything.…..

Had a table booked for 6pm for a meal before going to the Berries show at 7.30. We had ordered within 5mins of arriving but did not receive the meal until just about 7pm. We were ready to walk out when a waitress came up & apologised, she said there had been a mix up with the tables but people who came in after us were all served. Didn't like just having the pre theatre menu either. This used to be a fabulous restaurant for eating ad won lots of awards but afraid the standard is slipping. We won't be back. Only good thing about the Rep was we did enjoy the Berries show.

We often come here for special occassions and are always been impressed. They have the best steak I've ever had in Scotland and an excellent salad dressing (sounds weird but its really good!) I;ve been here for lunch as well and although its a wee bit pricey I always have the peppered steak sandwich (clearly a theme to my eating habits!) with chips and it is delicious and fills me up nicely. I would definitely reccomend this to people

3 of us went for a meal and we're not impressed. We'd eaten here before and enjoyed it, but after the last time i doubt we'll be back. We arrived and were told there were no mussels, and no steak. Two of us had the prawn and crab tian, which was tasteless and one had the mousse which was also tasteless. For main, two of us had pasta and one had the beef pie. The pasta was cold and the beef pie was very salty. We decided not to stay for pudding and went to a nearby pub instead to have after dinner drinks.

Unfortunately the once excellent chilli burger from the characteristic pheonix bar let us down after years of being the best in dundee (in my opinion). The Chilli was warm, not hot as expected (not warm enough to even melt the cheese on top). Historicly the burger was never the best but simply an accompaniment for the tasty chilli, the new Scotts burgers are hard compacted with no taste or char to indicate a cooked fresh feel, more a pre cooked and just reheated on demand afair. The "fall apart" softie rolls used would be better swapped to a toasted brioche bun. Fortunately i opted not to eat the burger but 2 of us were still ill. A shame as the chilli was a "go to" for us on any day out.
