Elmer's Take a Break Cafe in Cardiff

Workers are absolutely delightful ! Food is delicious, service was fast. Definitely a new go to.

Walked 3.5 miles round trip to get to this cafe for breakfast. It was packed, food looked lovely, then I noted it didn’t look very clean, sauce fingerprints on the menu, dirty condiments etc. quick check shows it was given a two star hygiene rating in August. Two out of three of the assessment was directly down to poor hygiene. Time for a sharp exit!!!

The boss there is awful he's a bully and treats his staff terrible and is always shouting and it's not very clean there either

First time popping in here as I have heard a few people recommend here on social media. Usually I am quite anxious visiting new places, but I'll be honest my anxiety was no issue. I had a mini breakfast which was the perfect size.

Nothing special about breakfast here to be honest.

We attended yesterday for the first time and both meals were absolutely amazing. The Sunday dinners looked amazing so will most definitely be trying that when we return.keep these little gems open guys.

Found this place on Google a few miles from our hotel. We're visiting from Essex. Firstly....the price for a breakfast compared to Essex and London was amazing.. practically half price. The cafe was busy but clearly locals who come and go. The food was served quick and hot/fresh. One of the best breakfasts we've had in a long time. Food was beautiful and staff very friendly.Thank you!

Have been here for various types of breakfast and also a Sunday Roast Dinner. The breakfasts are very reasonable and good value for money. They do a breakfast double for £6.95 which will give you two bacon, egg, sausage, hashbrown, black pudding, beans/tomatoes and buttered bread or Toast with a hot drink or a large glass of Orange juice. It's well established community café that has a warm and friendly atmosphere with staff who engage in conversation and bring the food to your table They have one toilet on site. It's situated in a heavily student populated area, but has good offers for pensioners and has a dedicated client base of regulars who frequent the café. Food is always lovely and we'll cooked. Service is quick and polite. Its not a greasy spoon,n but a great little spot to stop and get a good full belly.

I can honestly say, this place is a true 5* gem. The sort of cafe that sadly is disappearing from cities - so good is this place that I say it needs protecting and preserving at all costs! Food isn’t just typical old school cafe fayre, it is delicious too. And the value for money is truly extraordinary. Give me this place over any of the million chains any day. I’d travel out of my way just to go here. This is unique and is firmly in my top favourite places to eat, period. Elmers - you are legends. Please don’t ever disappear!

This cafe is a hidden jewel, we received 5* customer service and you made us feel so welcome. The breakfasts was delicious made with top quality ingredients and real butter on the toast. The price was extremely reasonable and I can’t recommend this place highly enough. The roast dinner looked and smelt amazing, we will definitely be back, thank you.

Waited 20 mins in a queue of 3 people, the server wasn’t bothered with processing people’s orders and seating. Just focusing on making coffee and chatting to the other server. I walked out and headed to granny Mac’s, Poor experience overall at Elmer’s.

Lovely food but the boss was very rude to his kitchen staff who work under pressure and in the hot weather hospitality is a very hard job and there was no need of the way he spoke to the staff very disappointing because the food is great and all the staff but not the boss

Visited here the other day and food was amazing but the off putting thing was the old gentlemen man that was shouting and swearing at the staff that were working very hard. There was not very many customers but he seems to be ranting and raving over things. It put me off my breakfast and don't think I would return due to this fact. He was swearing also. Made staff look and feel awful. Not sure if he is the owner older man with white hair on the till. Lovely cafe and food but sadly this man is letting it down

The best fry up in Cardiff and incredible value. I don't live local and parking isn't easy in the area but I will make a point of going here for breakfast rather than anywhere else - service is superb as well!

If you’re looking for a good quality, freshly cooked, full English breakfast, then you couldn’t get better than going here. The welcome was warm and the food was hot and plentiful! We had a massive breakfast which was very reasonably priced.

Went to Elmers today for the first time with a friend who was raving about the place! A full 5💥s. Food was lovely, the premises was clean and tidy and the owner was lovely.

Great place. Is it michelin star food? No. But that's not what Elmer's is about. It's good, hearty, simple food at incredible prices. You get way more than you expect for the price that you pay and it's always delivered with a smile. The full english and omlette are both great. Student and NHS discounts also. A great place to go for a hearty meal before an exam.

Really busy little café. We had breakfast here every morning during our stay in Cardiff for 6 Nations Wales-France match. The staff are very friendly and gave a very warm welcome to the large groups of French supporters that kept pouring in. They were very accommodating, shuffling tables around and cooking up the best breakfasts for all, with a smile and lots of patience.

We stumbled across Elmer’s whilst visiting some local charity shops on the same strip. We were greeted with a very warm welcome. We ordered our food at the counter and was told our food would be 10 minutes. We set down and within 3 minutes we had a delicious hot laté. A few minutes after we were served our delicious breakfast, served on a hot plate. The breakfast and service was 10/10 We will definitely be back here again and again. 5 stars

Just right for a breakfast. Lots of choice, good wholesome food and very reasonable prices. Hospitality and service was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Elmer's isn't fancy - it's an old fashioned cafe that serves simple food in good portion size. If you are looking for somewhere to fill up after a night out - look no further!!

Great value and delicious Sunday lunch .. a full plate of tasty food .. the lamb was very tender .. such good value at £8 .. the cafe was very busy but the lunch was worth the wait .. I will return !!

Fantastic little gem, great value for money and extremely nice staff and regular customers. Group of 8 of us turned up and they were all very accommodating. We had a great value double breakfast for £5.95 which came with toast and a drink...bargain. they also do what looked to be a lovely roast dinner for £8, well worth checking out. A1

Elmer’s has been a firm favourite of mine for years, I’ll always keep returning, it is definitely the nicest cooked breakfast in Cardiff but also the cheapest, it’s a traditional fry up, always piping hot and plenty of it. I’m yet to try anything else on the menu because every time I visit I’m so tempted to go with what I know I love, the breakfast! 10/10 from me! Definitely give this place a try if you’re looking for outstanding service and food!

A really friendly place to have great food

Brilliant old fashioned down to earth cafe. Unbelievable value breakfast with great quality ingredients. Friendly staff and owner really interested in our visit to Cardiff and offering advice on places for us to visit. We were even given an extra free sausage because I said how much I’d enjoyed them. If you want a warm welcome and a hearty full Welsh breakfast at a very low price in Cardiff, Elmer’s is the only place.

Cheap and excellent english breakfast ! Great and fast service, and everybody is really nice. A really good place to begin a day in Cardiff.

First time to visit Elmers and I doubt if its the last! Breakfast with our daughter and grandsons. No problem to oblige my grandson with his requests to adjust his breakfast. Served quickly and efficiently and hot. Conversation with the staff was friendly and they certainly made you feel welcome. Great breakfast at a very realistic price. We will be back!

Haven't been in a while, but, if I was to recommend a cafe to anyone in Cardiff this would be it, never disappoints.

We frequent a local restaurant for breakfast here at home and were delighted to discover Elmer's Take a Break Cafe in Cardiff. We loved it so much we went there four days in a row. The breakfasts are hearty, delicious and the people running Elmer's are awesome. If you're looking for ambiance, this isn't it. Go to Elmer's prepared for a wonderful meal served hot, quick and inexpensively. Great coffee too!

What a lovely little cafe!! Came up from Swansea for a night out and then came here for a breakfast the next morning and it absolutely hit the spot, lovely staff and food !!

I use Elmers regularly when in the area. The food and service are excellent and the value for money is very hard to beat. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Stopped for breakfast after staying the night in Cardiff. Can't complain at the prices, maybe even cheaper than a Weatherspoon's. Quality was okay, bacon on the saltier side, meat content of the sausages questionable - but for the price to be expected. It got extremely busy shortly after we arrived, this seemed to overwhelm the staff.. one being particularly rude to another group in the restaurant. One of our group also had a hair in the coffee but they replaced with no fuss - accidents happen. Would return if I was in the area.

I love Elmer's, the staff are lovely, the food is good value and cheerful. The breakfast is the best, the Sunday lunch is pretty good too and you can't go wrong with the chicken curry (with half and half).

The value of Elmer’s is unmatched in the area, staff are all lovely and I have many fond memories of breakfasts here. The food is of genuinely good quality and they are not too shy with portions. It gets really busy at times, but this is only because it is such a good, unpretentious place.

I’m not someone who often eats breakfast but my husband and daughter do, following the Harry Styles concert the night before they were ravenous. My husband had the full breakfast, I had a mini breakfast and my daughter had the veggie breakfast, so the full...

"So shines a good deed in a weary world" What a fantastic place which is a blast from a beautiful past generation - there are not many places where you can have a full english and a cup of tea or milky coffee for £5! The family run business deserve a pat on the back for the fact they are there to feed and support their community by keeping food and drinks at at affordable price - super friendly and caring. You always see a lot of loyal regulars - the father, mother and son team are amazing. You could go to the juno lounge and pay £13 for a luke warm breakfast or go straight to Elmer's where the food is always hot right up until the last morsel going down your throat. They do a cracking roast diner which i haven't tried yet - but its definitely  try next! Keep up the good work and please don't change.
