We heard this cafe had been taken over by Clarendons in Barnard Castle so decided to see how much had changed. Happy to say that, as far as we can see, nothing had changed; it was as good as ever. We both had the Ploughmans which were platters and featured dressed salad, two types of cheese, quality ham, egg, caramelised onions, lovely bread and butter and house made coleslaw. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole meal which was very fresh. There is a Specials Board next to where you order. They are open Wednesday to Sunday until the end of October then will close for the winter. We will certainly return.

Just wanted to say I had a most amazing day at Eggleston Hall and The Coach House yesterday. Travelled from Kendal, morning coffee outside in the sun and a yummy cheese scone, followed by a delicious lunch and get together with old friends I hadn't seen for months, A look around the fantastic amazing garden and an afternoon cake and tea with my husband before returning to Kendal. Was the best 'cherry topped Bakewell slice' I have ever tasted. What better way to spend a day. My thanks to all the helpful, pleasant staff at The Coach House, especially the 'chefs'. And a big 'thanks' to you Clare. Your Coach House is certainly 'The Jewel in Teesdale' will be back and 'often'

This place is great! We asked to order slightly off menu to accommodate dietary needs and it wasn't any trouble at all. The food is simply delicious, fresh and reasonably priced. The staff are friendly and genuinely seem to want you to have the best experience. I messaged through Facebook regarding the dietary needs and they replied very quickly. They have gluten free bread and vegan spread as standing items on the menu. If you're thinking of going at peak time, I recommend booking in advance - but it's worth it.

This place is the place I missed during lockdown the most. It’s a lovely peaceful place with a gorgeous garden next door, the food is great and the staff are lovely. I often have their delicious homemade soup but the platters and specials are also great. The staff are really lovely too going the extra mile to ensure you have a good day out. On a recent trip a member of our party thought he had lost his wallet in the cafe and they moved heaven and earth to try to find it for him when we rang later that day. It turned out he hadn’t lost it there but they searched the cafe and the carpark and nothing seemed too much trouble. I can’t recommend this lovely lunch spot enough (although I’d really rather keep it as my secret place to go)

My partner and I used to come here quite a lot but hadn't been for a year or so. A few days ago we decided to have breakfast there after our walk and ordered 2 bacon sandwiches and 2 coffees. We already knew that Eggleston Hall Cafe was expensive so weren't surprised by the cost (nearly £17) but we were very surprised by what we received. rather than giving their customers decent bread (sure they can afford to order in fresh bread?) our sandwiches were made with cheap sliced bread (of the mother's pride variety). To make matters worse the bread was dry at the edges as though it had been left out overnight. I would expect a better quality sandwich from a greasy spoon cafe never mind the over-priced Coach House Cafe. I would also like to add that plinking a piece of shrivelled vegetation on the side of the plate does not make it look upmarket it just looks grotty. The Coach House is a missed opportunity for a decent upmarket cafe - just hiking the prices is not good enough.

What a Gem. Quite small so worth booking in high Grockles Season. Good range of meals and snacks - all beautifully prepared from fresh ingredients. How it should be, but so often is not. We made 2 visits, firstly for Coffee and Cheese Scones on arrival. The Scones were amazingly cheesy, pastry very short - quite delicious. After a stomp around the Gardens (see separate Review) back for Lunch, which we had booked. The Cafe was full, suggesting that some locals from nearby Barnard Castle also patronise it. Delicious open sandwich with Chicken, Bacon, well dressed Salad and lots of Chips. Quite adequate for two to share. Do try it. Hayling Seagoon

I had the 3 bean chilli with flat bread and cous cous as my main it was delicious and nice and hot and spicy. Mum just wanted a dessert so she had the trio of desserts which she said were lovely. They gave my mum a discount of £3 as she wasn't having the main meal so it cost her £7 which I thought was really good of them. We then had a look in the gift shop, purchased handwash and organic soap then visited the cafe for tea and a scone. Staff were pleasant, friendly and quick with the order. We had a pot of tea and a fruit scone and cream. It was a lovely hand made scone and good cup of tea (with the tea bags left out of the pot so it did not get too strong). We were also offered more water if we needed it. It is surprising how many times we ask for the t-bags to be left out and they are not and we hate strong tea. We would certainly have a return visit.

I’ve visited this place a few times. The food is always good and the cake counter always looks amazing. Unfortunately during my last visit, I was shocked by the attitude of the (I’m assuming) manager. She was very rude and sarcastic to me and made us feel unwelcome. Now if she had only directed her negative attitude towards me, I would have simply let it go. However, I felt the need to write this review when I also witnessed her being very belittling towards another younger member of staff who looked visibly upset at the way she was being spoken to by her. Now this poor girl was lovely to us and was only trying her best to accommodate us, as the manager should have done in the first place. It really is a shame, because like I said, the food here is lovely, so it is unfortunate that because if this incident, I am now reluctant to return.

Took the family here on our way home from a couple of days in a cottage we have in Eggleston. We've been coming to the area for a decade but this is the first time i'd used the café. Took my wife, son and daughter. They had freshly baked cheese scones with scrambled egg. I had had the breakfast muffin with black pudding, bacon, egg, two sausages. This was probably the best breakfast I've had in my 38yrs, no grease in sight, everything cooked crisply to perfection and the quality of ingredients along with the care with which they were prepared was obvious on every plate. Can't believe I've not been using this place every time I go. All in it was £25 for the four of us including drinks which these days is pretty reasonable. Picturesque surroundings and a local walk across the fields for the dog. Brilliant.

The menu was not just the usual fare, but it had hot meals as well. We had the hot roast beef baguettes, very nice, well presented, tender beef, what’s not to like. The coffee was also very good, not the usual, “all strength no flavour” which seems to be the norm today. We had to try a piece of tray bake, it looked yummy, must have had about a thousand calories, but was also excellent. Overall, great little cafe if we are in the area again we won’t hesitate to return. The gardens are great, the cafe makes it a real treat.

The reason I am not going to give it five stars is that on arrival the cafe was under quarter full with staff standing behind the counter there was no hurry to clear the tables ...there were about five tables behind us not cleared and our table was sticky and had something spilt on it. We had to ask twice for it to be cleaned. I felt also that because of the size of the cups you should have a free refill..... such a shame as I really wanted to give it five stars.

We stopped at the tea house before venturing to the gardens at Eggleston Hall. It's got a rather nice atmosphere, enhanced by works from the gallery in the gardens. There is a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating available. TA good gluten free selection was available (4 cakes as well as scones.) I suspect the scone was frozen and heated in the microwave but have to say it was very tasty and probably better than the regular fruit scone my mother ordered. (A bit dry and served cold.) My father said his chocolate cake was ok but a bit heavy. The Victorian sponge cake was good, if a bit sweet, according to my husband. Coffee and tea were also comparable to any of the other places we visited. There were lunch type dishes on the menu as well, so one can easily make a meal of it here. (Not sure if they have GF lunch options.) Nice place, worth stopping in while visiting the gardens.

All were ok, but the pate amount was so small that there wasn't enough to really share, The Cotherstone, although delicious as usual, was very small and the chutney was a small amount of sliced onion, sort of sautéed or marinated, couldn't work out which. Nice ham but the salad was straight out of a packet, the yucky creamy coleslaw too and the disgusting sweet onion jam was foul. The filter coffee was excellent - I should know I am very particular about coffees - and the service extremely correct but friendly. We jokingly said that should we not be offered a meal at our destination, we would be back for lunch. Hey Ho !!!.......some two hours later, we were back. We both decided to have a light bite, and chose the same; smoked salmon and prawn salad. There was plenty of salmon and prawns on a crisp salad, with some brown bread and butter. It was very filling and not expensive. In fact the whole menu is not expensive. It is a place I would like to come back and experience some more of the same high quality food and service. We have just had lunch here. It was delicious. Gordon had the duck pate served with caramelized onions and salad and a bread cob,who h he described as lovely. I had the prawn and smoked salmon linguine, which was delicious, light and very tasty. We both followed with dessert,. Gordon with his usual toffee ice cream sundae, which was said to be yummy, I had the homemade chocolate and cherry cream sponge

After a ten mile walk alone both sides of the River Tees our group of friends stopped for lunch. It was a beautiful sunny day and therefore the cafe was extremely busy. We ordered jacket potatoes, sandwiches and panini, together with a selection of drinks and sat on the outside patio space. Our waiting time was a little longer than expected but we were kept informed by the waitress and the wait was not excessive in the circumstances. The food was plentiful for lunch, very tasty and well presented. All in all a very nice experience topped off with a visit to the nearby garden centre.

Came in here with family for a cooked dinner rather than a light bite or coffee and cake which we usually do. The roast beef dinner was excellent as were the desserts. Portions not massive but prices very reasonable.

I always believed that Yorkshire was famous for the generosity of its people and the portions of food served at their tables. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case if you eat here. The four of us had lunch with panini, garlic mushrooms and chips as well as various drinks and whilst the food was tasty, it certainly could only be described as a ‘light’ lunch.

We came to visit the gardens and decided to have some coffee and cake before heading home. Both coffee and cake were excellent and friendly staff and service too.

Vegans - please go here! I can only assume a member of staff is vegan as the menu is well thought out and choice sublime. Each section has plenty of options for vegetarians/vegans and I will be recommending it to all of my friends. If only more businesses in Barnard Castle and surrounding areas took a leap out of your book. Well done, and thanks again. The food was exquisite!

We have generally had good food here. Just a couple of problems over the years. However it has gone downhill during recent months. The “beef stew” served to my father this week looked awful. Stringy meat and dry. He asked for extra gravy which was provided, but couldn’t eat it. The staff are always lovely, however, and the puddings excellent. Shame

I would recommend this lovely cafe to anyone visiting in the Barnard Castle area. You can just have a coffee or tea, or indulge in sandwiches, panini, baguettes lovely cakes or even a main meal or salad. All freshly prepared. Home made soups are good and GF too! Good choice of coffees or teas even some wine.

Visited tea room after a trip to Barnard Castle. A beautiful setting and a lovely sunny day made the stop even better. We had coffee and cake served by friendly staff. Tea room clean and bright and will definitely return for a breakfast and/or lunch to include a visit to the gardens. Have been in the area several times and can't believe that we have never stopped before.

We visited the gardens and planned to have coffee and cake, but sadly the prices were rather too high! The latte I had was lovely, and husband enjoyed a cup of tea. The cafe is a pleasant room and the staff were friendly.

We have visited The Eggleston Hall Cafe and Tea Rooms for the past five years whilst holidaying in the area. We have always received a very warm welcome and it became a regular stop off for tea and a cake after a days walking in the surrounding countryside.

If you are visiting Middleton in Teesdale then for lunch or coffee and cake I would come here. The food and cakes are superb and better than any of the cafés I have been to elsewhere. Ingredients are local and the staff are excellent. You can also look round the beautiful plant centre for free and the gardens for a modest charge.

Now called PLATFORM ONE- Fifteas Vintage Tearoom. Same type of seating indoor and outdoor but a brighter, fresher look with clearer signage. Cornedbeef pie was the order of the day. Nice light pastry
