This place was recommended but the service failed to impress. Not best pleased to be overcharged even though I queried the bill twice. As suspected we were overcharged by almost 40%. Had to wait days for the credit to go through even though I was debited straight away. Very slow on producing the simplest of food. Unlikely to return.

Had a lovely lunch at Dusty's, gorgeous sweet chilli chicken wrap, there is plenty on the menu to choose from including children's meals. Great selection of Teas, Coffee and Soft Drinks and service is with a smile too. The ice creams, served in either a bowl or a cone are very generous portions, all homemade, the Lemon Curd was fabulous as was the Vanilla and sticky toffee pudding flavours. Situated next to an old mill it is a beautiful setting, a lovely place to eat. The cafe is also licensed.

We found this on day 4 of our Bay Cycle tour. We would give it full marks for the cakes and found it be a very friendly place to stop. It can be a sun trap and its a really great place to stop for a cuppa. I thought the signs were helpful

Dusty Miller's tea room is beside the Gleaston Water Mill. It's on a lovely quiet lane, it has seating inside and outdoors on benches. The cafe is popular with cyclists (it's on the Bay Cycleway route 700) and they have a bike rack in the field opposite. The main reason for anyone to make a detour to Dusty Miller's is the cake!! I had the triple lemon cake which was the most gorgeous cake I've tasted in a very long time. I spoke with the cook who said he bakes all the cakes himself. I'll definitely be back!

We saw this sign-posted from the Barrow to Ulverston coastal road. There was a large sign at the main road, then nothing so we went past it three times. Ironic really because inside the tea room they have signs for everything - where to sit, how to sit, how your dogs should behave, how to order food, how to pay etc etc. The tea and coffee was OK, the cake was quantity-over-quality but good value. The toilets are outside. It was OK, but if we were passing again we wouldn't bother to travel the mile on the dirty narrow lane.

Just on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Gleaston is Gleaston Water Mill. The mill which dates from the 17th century but has its antecedents further back in time is a building of great historical importance. Situated in a delightful hidden valley which connects to the village of Scales to the north, the mill stands next to the imposing ruins of Gleaston Castle. As part of the complex is Dusty Millers. This is a small but welcoming café/restaurant which has been built onto the water mill and has a good view via a vertical window of the water wheel. We visited on a sunny January lunch time and were made very welcome by the two young men who run it. The wood burning stove was blazing up and there was a smell of fresh coffee in the air. The menu was snack oriented: sandwiches, paninis, and so forth with a number of specials displayed on the noticeboard. There was also a selection oof home baked cakes and scones as well as bottled beers from the nearby Ulverston Brewing Company. Service was quick , friendly and attentive. Altogether it was a lovely, quiet place to spend a lunchtime. There was also the added cachet of family history. The miller at the turn of the 19th century was my wife's Great Grandfather who was succeeded by a great aunt and uncle of hers. She remembers visiting the mill as a girl when it was being run as a market garden. .As you can appreciate it brought back special memories for her. Drove back via the hidden valley, all limestone outcrops and running water.

I had heard good reports about this place so was looking forward to our night out. "Traditional Christmas dinner" served with not a potato in sight! When I enquired if there was any I blunt "NO" was my reply! Sticky toffee pudding was the dessert but unfortunately it had been burnt to the point we could smell it, sent it back but for the replacement also to be char grilled! You might ask why I didn't complain on the night but the rude bluntness of the owners and their lack of presence in the room left a lot to be desired, also having sent the pudding back without an apology I couldn't see the point. A simple "is everything alright" would have been lovely.

Travelling from Barrow in Furness along the coast to Ulverston, we decided to call at Dusty Miller's for a scone/tray bake and a cuppa. The tray bake was double the normal size at less than a normal size price. Really delicious and the fruit scone was perfect. Look out for the sign for Gleaston Water Mill on the main road and Dusty Miller's is next to the mill.

Decided to park here and have breakfast and use as walk start point. Unfortunately after organising the walk I found the opening hours were 11 to 4:30. Which is suprising for a cafe as it eliminates all the breakfast trade. Anyhow we still parked here at 10am and hoped that we would be back in time for tea and a sticky at the end of the walk. As we set off for our walk we were challenged by a bearded fellow as to why we were parking here at 10am, we explained we intended to come back, but we were a little pu out as there was no signage saying not to park and no honesty box. Anyhow our walk took longer than expected and we arrived back later than expected and it was shut which was a pity. But the bearded fellow popped out and asked for a donation to aprk, we said fine and asked how much. He wanted a fiver each which we paid, we didn't have to, but it was only fair. However he carried on asking why we had decided to park here in the first place. If he had carried on much more about it i wouldn't have given him any money at all. So Not impressed at all, Rubbish opening times and a poor and unfriendly attitude and we got no tea and cake. So if your going for a walk then pick somewhere else to start from at least you might get a breakfast. So we spent £10 in a free car park and had no drinks or food,

Driving around the area we had just been disappointed that the last place we had visited had closed it's cafe and shop for a festival of some sort, and feeling peckish, and driving onward, quite by chance I saw a sign for a water mill with a food symbol included. I thought I had missed a turn, as I seemed to drive for ages on a narrow road before spotting a second small almost hidden sign. Another mile or two on a narrow lane, and there it was, appearing from nothing! Quite amazing. What an absolute gem this is. The cafe is nothing to do with the mill and water wheel, which seems to be derelict and abandoned.Such a shame as one might be able to support the other. However, the cafe was ultra clean, tidy and bright, and the young man serving could not have been more helpful. The food we ordered was excellent and plenty of it. All we sought was a snack for lunch, and it was very filling.I note that just a few of the comment made about this cafe have been very derogatory! I'm amazed. I thought this place to be excellent. Good luck to them. Loved it!

Made a large booking here just before Christmas. They opened specifically for our party in the evening as they do for private bookings. The menu was varied and the food exceptionally good, and at an amazingly reasonable price. I wouldn't have expected such good value for money if I hadn't eaten here the Christmas before. Went in last week for tea and cakes. The cakes are to DIE FOR. Lemon cake is exceptionally good, and the chocolate cake really satisfied the chocolate-lover in our party. Great choice, excellent value for money, good honest homemade food. I can't recommend this little gem enough.

Just been for tea and cake which was sadly not a pleasant experience. The room itself was warm but damp - so much so that the windows (and my glasses!) were all steamed up. We had a selection of cakes and tea. The tea was good and served in a large pot. However the cakes were really not nice. The scone, served with a good helping of jam and cream, was dry and heavy, tasting only of flour. The 'caramess' was a mess indeed. It was so hard that we couldn't cut it and it tasted musty and stale. The lemon cake was no better. It's such a shame that this previously lovely, quirky cafe has declined so quickly. We certainly won't be going back.

Whilst far from the worst place in the world it falls short of what it could be, especially given it's location and the quirkiness of the building. The food is OK for the money, but the service is slightly below par and the concept of courses being served at different times seems lost here.

This cafe is just up the road from our house so we have tried it a few times now for lunch and have always had a good experience. The menu is not extensive but everything on it including the mouth watering choice of cakes is home made. We went yesterday and had the home made meat and potato pie with mushy peas - not exactly haute cuisine but just as good and at a fraction of the price. Can really recommend.

I fully appreciate that the premises are an old water mill but it does look run down from the outside. Certainly the food we had was very nice and no complaints in that department but the general aesthetics of the establishment is dower. The inside does look dirty and unwelcoming. Drab and in places dusty along wooden edges of fittings. It certainly matches it's name "Dusty Miller"As stated it is an old mill and fully appreciate that but the place could be so much better, in my humble opinion. Would I return? Probably not.

I have been wanting to visit Gleaston Watermill and Dusty Miller's cafe for some time and finally got the privilege today, when I went with my stepdaughter and 4 year old granddaughter for lunch. The cafe is lovely : quaint decor with a country feel and an excellent choice of snacks : paninis, sandwiches, soups, fabulous cakes plus a good choice of kids meals and great fresh coffee! There are seats outside on a sunny day and the location is delightful, with the sound of a bubbling stream running past and on a country lane (it would be easy to drive straight past!). The piggy focused shop next door stocks some lovely goods and for £5 you can visit the the actual watermill. A short 5 min walk down the lane brings you to the lovely park in Gleaston, which is great for kids and another lovely location. There is ample parking opposite the cafe and our only surprise was that the cafe was not more popular on such a lovely, warm, sunny afternoon in the middle of the Easter holidays! I shall be taking my mum for afternoon tea next time. Well worth a visit, and only an 8min drive from Ulverston.

We happened upon this wonderful place as we were touring the area on a recent break. We couldn't believe it when we saw the Tea Room sign on a very quiet road on a cold January morning. What a warm and cheery welcome greeted us when we went inside. The two guys that run this place are obviously passionate about their hideaway. The homemade Broccoli & Swiss Cheese soup was delicious, and the real homemade bread with it an absolute joy. Real food in a relaxing and unrushed atmosphere is something to cherish in this fast paced world full of it's fast food. No fancy menu here though, just good, simple food. We will definitely be back.

Some friends and I went for lunch and were pleasantly surprised to find it busy! Being rather out of the way, it can be hard for places like this to keep trade ticking over. Good choice of sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, specials such as meat and potatoe pie and daily specials such as omlette. Good selection of coffee and tea and you could go mad amd have a glass of wine if you felt like it! Cakes were massive portions, and delicious! Service quick and pleasant. Expect to pay £4.50 - £7 for a lunch and £2.50 for a huge slice of cake. Only downside was the toilets being over the road in a separate building, which was a bit of a pain with toddlers as they kept pretending they needed to go so they could explore outside!

Very much off the beaten track in the heart of Furness, about five minutes' drive from the A5087 Ulverston-Barrow 'Coast Road'. On a sunny day, it was very pleasant to sit at outside tables, in a narrow, peaceful valley and alongside Gleaston's historic water mill. Pot of tea for two provided a couple of large cups each. Topped off with a delicious shared scone, served with jam and fresh cream. Bill came to a reasonable £4.80. A lovely location to pause during the day's activities. Popular with cyclists, too. We felt the £5 admission charge to the mill was a little on the high side, so gave it a miss. A group of beekeepers has its hives on the other side of the back road passing the mill. They can be found there on Saturdays. Loos on site as well.

I came to the cafe after seeing a sign on the coast road for it and was surprised to see a traditional cafe. I was greeted warmly by the staff and the menu had a huge choice for a cafe. The specials were so tempting that I had to try the pie. I was dying to try a cake after I read the rick stein letter which complimented the chefs sticky toffee pudding but I was so full that I took a selection of cakes home for the family to eat after our tea. Dusty Millers was a well known Gluten Free cafe in Gleaston. But it is currently under new managment and i would no-longer class it as Gluten free. The main choice avalible on the menu is soup, sandwich, jacket potatoe and fry up breakfast. The homemade cakes look very nice not there wasnt 1 Gluten free option avalible. The staff had no knowledge to what a Gluten free diet was and there was cross contamination everywhere, i.e tesco value flour on worktop used to make Gluten free meal. The Staff where nice and if you can eat a normal diet then it is a clean, well priced cafe. I wish the new owners all the best with the future as this is not ment to but people off but more advise Gluten free people to be carefull,

Barmaid wanted £36. I said, "£36 for two puddings and a pint and a half?" She immediately reconsidered. "It's £29.50.". She printed me a receipt and said, "You asked for extra custard. Life isn't free, sir." I had indeed asked for extra custard, for which I had only been charged a pound. But obviously, people who query bar bills in the Lakes are regarded as the lowest form of scroungers.
