Duke's Delicatessen & cafe in Eastbourne

Popped in for a sandwich when we visited Eastbourne and enjoyed the cheese and tomato toastie and the BLT cooked just to our liking - extra crispy! Both we perfect and friendly service. Great value option for lunch.

Lovely cosy cafe with comfortable purple chairs you can melt in! The lady serving was really kind and welcoming. Loved the coffee, the homemade sweet cakes and cookies. Definitely worth a visit.

Mid to late August 2024, after an exhilarating but tiring return cycle along the Cuckoo Trail, followed by the traditional fish supper on the pier (don't try if you like good quality fish and chips!), I was then in need of a nice coffee, and maybe dessert! Terminus Road is close by, just off the Prom (promenade to the uninitiated) and is a pleasant (semi-pedestrianised in summer season) street, soon hopefully to be fully pedestrianised year-round, according to the owner. In London, (and more specifically the Royal Borough of Greenwich where I live) I'd have had real trouble finding somewhere open at this hour (around 6-7 pm). But the doors of Dukes were wide open and inviting, and I wondered whether the name made it a place worthy of a 'Duke' to visit! Doggies are welcome- and with a free treat so I see from previous pics! And so possibly Duke is the name of the owner's canine friend (or was?). Cycles, however, were not so welcome ha ha! When you study Marketing, you're told that 'the customer is always right!' But that isn't always the case. Quite rightly the owner said outright, "sorry, but I have a new flooring to protect from such potential risks, which includes large buggies. And so I chained up outside- the bike that is (here's where my Londoner by birth exposes itself, as the owner quickly said "oh no you don't need to lock it up, this isn't London here haha"!) Nevertheless old habits die hard. So, as a venue I was pleased to get a decent coffee so late in the day, and it was a VERY decent coffee-full marks (having had one on the prom that morning which failed the grade). And we have a fair number in the city to compare it to, but this was nice, and I chilled in a comfortable relaxed environment. Seating was plush and very clean for a coffee house as well. I love indies when they chat to locals, and friends and family pop in. That's something again which London is short of. I see the reviews are currently 4.9, which is exceptional on Google, but here is well deserved. I review quite a lot (which the owner had no knowledge of). We chatted casually, whilst she looked out for other customers and kept an eye on a younger family member outside happily playing in the traffic-free street. Shelves were neatly packed with a variety of food and drink. It appears licensed for both on and off premises which is handy. Some decent craft alcoholic bevvies seemed nicely displayed and inviting, and I was sorry to be cycling at this point, or would have enjoyed 1 or 2! Both hot and cold food offerings, judging from previous pics/reviews, seem high quality. But I was too relaxed now to need more than my coffee and a comfy chair! Long may places like this continue in the battle against the large Corporate. It's a special place, give it a go when you're in Eastbourne, which itself has a lot of charm. Keep it up boss, it's hard running a small business but especially so in a holiday resort. Four years in you've kept a high standard up. And you were right... I didn't need the bike inside haha!

Super friendly owner with freshly baked goods made on premises. Get there early to get a slice of the viral Kinder Bueno cookie pie, which takes 13 hours to make! Cookies are decadent and huge. Large selection of pastries both sweet and savoury and a lovely delicatessen featuring dried and tinned goods from different countries and a lovely selection of wooden crockery for sale. Open late through the summer.

Lovely, chatty owner and the cafe itself holds a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with cosy decor and comfy seats it’s the perfect place to enjoy a coffee, cake or pastry whilst people watching or simply enjoying some quiet time. I will choose this gem of a cafe over a mainstream coffee shop any day!

I came here for the latte and cinnamon bun, I was not disappointed. Very tasty cinnamon bun with a good heaping of cinnamon which I love. Laura, the owner very cool, welcoming and a joy to talk with. Definitely will be visiting again.

Not friendly staff. Received immediate instructions upon arrival instead of a warm welcome. Missed opportunity Update: in our experience, wheelchair users were able to pass and it was not asked or discussed, but instructed from behind the bar today. Of course, everything is possible in consultation, but always start by welcoming your guests who come out of the rain. The rest will come naturally.

Such a lovely little cafe, with delicious food, cakes and pastries! Me and my partner were enticed by the home made cinnamon swirls and they were fantastic! We highly recommend and will return again!

I was walking past and the Belgium bun enticed me in. This was home baked by the owner and was absolutely moreish, so much so, i had to ask for a take away bag as i couod only eat half of it at the time. I also had a delicious flat white. I would highly recommend this fabulous delicatessen. I will certainly be comeing back. Thank you for a wonderful experience, your passion shines through in your product.

We’ve been to Duke’s every day during our stay in Eastbourne. Great teas, coffee and sandwiches, friendly host and relaxed atmosphere. We just loved the place!

Fortune is the daughter of misfortune! I found Duke’s because another place I visit was closed! The coffee here is THE BEST I have had in a very long time and Laura is a delightful, gifted and friendly host! Forget the beachside cafés as this place is a 1 minute walk from the beach and well worth it! Duke’s is now my go to place in Eastbourne for coffee and a snack 💚

Had a Coronation Chicken sandwich and a Latte. Both were absolutely perfect and delicious. The portions are excellent too. Service is fantastic and friendly. I was especially impressed with the wide selection of essential available to buy. We hadn't expected it to be so sunny and therefore hadn't put suncream on my very fair daughter. They had both factor 30 and 50 available, such a good idea to have nearby the seafront. We had tried a local convenience store, which didn't have any!

Very nice place, we loved the teddy bear on the latte. The chai latte is awesome 👏, a proper one and not just milk in some other places! Definitely recommend this place! Best coffee shop and fab sandwiches/toasties delicious selection of cakes and goodies , Laura is so accommodating for me and my friend with our toddlers nothing is to much trouble. Great toy section for the little ones. Highly recommed I am a weekly customer and won't go anywhere else!

Lovely cosy cafe/coffee shop, staff were lovely, helpful and accommodating, cakes were to die for and the hot chocolate was lovely and hot. I even had a free gingerbread man with a smiling face staring at me placed on the side of my cup. Just what was needed on a crazy morning x

Came in for a drink today and was very happy with the selection of drinks available. The owner was very nice and chatty, they made the sandwich my mother ordered to perfection "extra crispy" dog friendly and a nice outdoor seating area in the sun. Support independent companies!

Thank so much for my lovely strawberry bubble tea it was amazing and very tasty too as I have try fair fews place before but they never great but your one was amazing for me I will coming back for more She also does Mango and milk bubble tea and u can even have with water or milk and the little are blackcurrant balls which are very nice and pop really quickly in ur months .x
