I used to go here on occasion while stationed at Brawdy. It was a great place to go after a session of surfing. I was saddened to hear that it recently suffered a fire.

Awful night in Newgale. Disappointing building. Dead plants and doormat graveyard at entrance up fire escape. Dingy room, dusty and tired. Awful mattress and fold up bed. Bedding dumped in wardrobe. Rusty radiators and 4" shower cord. Insufficient towels.

The pub is right by the beach. Busy with holidaymakers. Had a superb pint of Guinness which cost £6 but it was the best I’ve had in Wales for many, many years if not the best ever. Then I had a gammon steak which was v good. The Duke of Edinburgh don’t try and cut corners on how much they give you. Let’s say I didn’t go hungry after eating it as you can see from the photo

We were camping at the campsite at Newgale and came here for breakfast. The food was excellent and great veggie options. The Glamorgan sausages are so tasty! The portions were large and overall the breakfast was really good value. The place was clean and the decor inside is much nicer than we expected from the outside.

A group of us visited the duke of Edinburgh pub yesterday after a day on the beach to grab something to eat, save us cooking back at our campsite. There were over 20 of us so we were spending quite alot of money. Firstly the welcome wasn't the best. We arrived at 5 to be told we would have to wait until 6 to order. No smile from any of the staff, to be quite honest they all looked as miserable as sin and the atmosphere was poor. None of them looked like they wanted to be there. Not the welcome you expect in the hospitality trade. Anyway we decided to stay as there was nowhere else to go and the children were hungry. After looking at the menu my 5 year old daughter didn't fancy anything on there apart from a tuna mayo baguette. Baguettes are only served until 3pm but I thought it would t hurt to ask if they could knock one up for her as she's a very fussy eater. I was told point blank and very rudely no. Baguettes are baked, fair enough, so I asked would they be able to do her a sandwich instead. There is surely not much effort required to make a sandwich I was told yet again no. I explained she was a fussy eater and the reply was, oh well she will have to have a packet of crisps for food!!!!!!Bare in mind between us we were spending over £500 to eat there. Absolutely disgusting service and damn right rude. If the other children wernt so hungry I would have left and not given this establishment my money. Food is average but very overpriced. The place is not the cleanest. Sticky tables, dusty chairs and filthy floors. Flies everywhere aswell. I would highly suggest some customer service training for your staff members. I won't be returning again. Definitely not a very welcoming place. Such a shame as its such a great location.

We needed of somewhere to shelter on a wet day so nipped into the pub for a pot of tea. It was the most I've ever paid (£3.40 per person) and the worst I've ever had! Made with the cheapest industrial tea bags and warm water, it actually made me feel slightly ill afterwards.

We were staying next door. We went here for breakfast. Firstly its dog friendly i had my 5month old pup with me and he was very welcomed. Ill be honest i was a bit reserved at first it was very quiet and decor was a bit old. We had been for dinner the year before and it was okay mot great. We asked for a menu and the lady told us what they had. The staff were lovely met the chef and the lady that served us as well. We got our hot drinks no problem. Then what i can only describe as the BEST breakfast we have had arrived! It was well cooked not greesy and huge. We really enjoyed. They even sent a sasusage for the puppy! We will 100% go here for dinner next time we stay.

I rarely write reviews but I feel I have to for the sake of the staff. I was camping next door and came for some food. The waitress staff were very young and clearly inexperienced. This is fine as we all have to start somewhere. However they didn't seem to have been taught the basics of what is on the menu. We ordered our food. We waited and waited. Eventually we asked where our food was. It had been lost. We spoke to the manager who was incredibly rude. She said she was going to be nice to us. When we suggested she should have given us some bread or something to keep us going, she slammed down packets of crisps on the table and stormed off. She was incredibly rude and horrible to the young staff she had. She said she didn't even know the names of the waitress staff. I have never seen anything like it. I appreciate it is post cost covid and staffing is an issue. Clearly staff had not been trained and being kind and courteous costs nothing. The food itself was typical pub food but it was fine.

I completely understand the covid situation at the moment but oh my god what a way to run a business in hard times, plenty of staff on but you have to put your hands up to get noticed like in school. Anyway after 20 minutes of waiting and waving finally got service only to have a meal missing. ( only 12 people in the pub ) same again to get drinks again and again. Asked for the bill the landlady asked what we had seriously. Another 20 minutes waiting we left without paying for the drinks and I don't think she cared less with her attitude. Been going there for years and she's still a miserable person with no care for her business. Food is really nice but be prepared to wait all day , wrong order and wait until next week to pay the bill.

As a Pembrokeshire person I’ve been visiting the Duke for years for the odd drink or meal on a Sunny day, but as I moved closer to Newgale last year I was so excited for it to become my local - how wrong was I! The landlady/ manageress (I assume) is one of the most unwelcoming rudest women I have ever met in my life, which is such a shame as the pub is in a beautiful area. Last summer during Covid regulations I was unfortunate enough to pop in every time she was working, to find slow service (one weekday afternoon I waited 25 mins by the wait here to be seated sign to pop my head round the corner to find her talking to a colleague in an empty pub and gave me the dirtiest look when I asked if I could come in and I had to ask her if she wanted track and trace details as she didn’t take any?!), dirty tables that hadn’t been sanitised between customers, and the general feeling that you’re bothering her whenever you ask to be served. As soon as it changed to table service only I haven’t been there since as I can only imagine how long it would take to be served with her on shift. Such a shame, as the other staff are extremely kind and hardworking, the food is lovely and beers are well kept. I now try to only go in rarely when I can’t see the manageress is there, or I get a friend braver than I to go order! As someone who works in the hospitality industry myself I honestly think its such a shame to have such terrible service from management as they clearly just rely on their location to get trade for the summer, I know if they were just that little bit nicer maybe they’d get that local trade all year round.

There were restrictions put in place to ensure everyone’s safety, in relation to Covid-19, which was good to see. This is the second time this year I have been into the Duke, and I have to say the only negative is the landlady. Her attitude is poor, aggressive and generally pretty rude. I have no wish to be unkind but like its namesake this pub seemed a little past its prime and dated, with a certain air of unnecessary grumpiness. We needed some lunch (myself and Holly Terrier that is) and we planned a post-lunch walkies on Newgale Beach. It seemed we had very little choice but to have lunch here...and therein may lie the problem, no competition so no incentive to up their game. I noted that this pub was dog friendly (good) and read the several signs on the doors demanding dogs be clean, dry, well-behaved, on short leads, under strict control...etc. and so forth (fair enough). We approached the bar on arrival (not a sniff of a cheery welcome from the bar staff sadly) and ordered a grapefruit juice...which was met by a questioning reply and raised eyebrows as if I'd asked for some illegal substance. I then asked to order food, hoping perhaps that on a Sunday lunchtime there might be a nice roast lunch on offer, disappointingly no. Instead from the basic bar menu (the standard selection 'pub grub' as it used to be called back in the 80s) I ordered the chicken breast portion and chips, this was met with another raised eyebrow and I was asked if I really wanted half a chicken. I replied that I would share it with my dog...a response which was tutted. I wonder if all orders of food and drink have to meet with the approval of the bar staff ? Anyway we sat down away from the main bar so that Holly did not cause offense to other customers...by this time I was already fed up of being tutted. In the room where we sat there was a plethora of slot machine and a pool table so not exactly relaxing and convivial surroundings. There was also a family there with children who spent most of their time being gobby fighting with each other, ignoring their parents and using the pool cues as weapons of mass destruction. I wish pubs who were so demanding about canine behaviour applied the same rules to small humans. The food was OK but the chicken was a little tough and overcooked, Holly ate most of it and she had no complaints. It was generally expensive for what it was. The seat I sat on was sticky with split drink and the floor was grubby, I spotted a fingernail which was a tad unpleasant. Did not bother to stay for any pudding. This pub, the mood of the staff, the style and quality of food and the entertainments may well be some peoples cup of tea but not mine. If I was going to Newgale again I'd take a picnic instead.

Lovely little pub, we arrived hoping to have food but unfortunately food had stopped serving which was no problem at all. We then decided to have a few drinks out the front which was beautiful. Only let down was we were served by a miserable blonde bar "lady" who was rude. She accidently tipped some of my cider over herself when removing the bottle cap, she then huffed and puffed and asked her colleagues whether it was stain, made a scene and made us feel really uncomfortable. It's a shame because the other members of staff were really pleasant and happy. I stood by the bar as she then went on to serve my sister and her family, again her attitude was disgusting. We sat down inside to which my sister asked if I had noticed the bar woman's behaviour/attitude we then left because she had made us feel uncomfortable (initially we was gonna stay till 6 to wait for food to be served). We then went outside to finish our drinks and discussed the way we were spoken too, another family commented and said they felt exactly the same way. Such a shame, I realise it was really busy but a smile or thank you can go a long way. I've never felt the need to ever write a review, but after the way I felt leaving I want it to be acknowledged.

The food was beautiful, there's no denying that, BUT the menu is misleading and when I ordered my food and it didn't come with what it said it should have, I queried it with a lady behind the bar. She was very rude to me and spoke to me as if I was stupid. Even if this lady apologised for the confusion I would have accepted, but the fact she told me 'many people have come up here about this issue' and still not have changed anything about it. We were a small group of 35 - 60 years olds, not a stag do, not a hen party, a couple friends wanting to have a drink to celebrate a 60th birthday. The lady behind the bar was beyond rude and unwelcoming! At 10.30pm, said rude lady come over and said it was last orders. She could not have got us out of there quick enough. Disappointing really. Just came back from a lovely weekend in Newgale & Solva. We stayed in the accommodation above the pub, which was clean, spacious and dog friendly. The only disappointment was the attitude of a female member of staff of this pub itself (which is nothing to do with accommodation). I arrived early to the accommodation and knowing the pub was dog friendly I decided to take my two dogs to the beer garden and order food whilst we waited for 3pm. We were there for a welsh cavachon club meet which began at 3.30 pm. A few people also staying in the pub and living local started to arrive I thought I would be polite and offer them a place to sit on the bench I was on, which led to my puppy getting over excited, and barking a bit, along with another dog. I was spoken to very rudely by a female member of staff about quietening my dog or leaving. I felt very embarrassed to be spoken to like a child being told off in front of the strangers I had offered to share my table with. It was a bit difficult to leave when you're staying above it and had already ordered and paid for food, whilst waiting to get in our room. I get the point but it was the tone and manner in which I was spoken to that left a bad taste. I should have known it wasn't particularly dog friendly by the stroppy notice that has been put up on the door advising of badly behaved dogs, etc etc. Shame really as the accommodation above was really good with excellent customer service. Food was average, overall there are much nicer pubs, friendlier and with better customer service in Solva, near the harbour.

So much food lovely side salad and garlic bread that is a strong flavoured buttery delight When hungry I've eaten the steak and onion baguette before and when really hungry tackle the amazing gammon.Always spoilt for choice and struggle to make my mind up as the foods so good..Rarely eat anywhere else and keep coming back for more Never get to try the desert menu as usually full but it's nice to wash the food down with good beer and they keep a cracking pint of Doombar

Nothing exciting about the menu but a good overall selection to choose from. Something for everyone. The meal was not quick in coming but it was busy and when it came I thoroughly enjoyed it.It could do with some competition though as there was nothing close by to challenge them. The staff were very friendly though.

Stopped here for an evening meal after visiting the beach. If I have a fancy for scampi and chips, this is the place I go. Being local, its close to drop in without booking but there are usually plenty of tables, inside and out. Service is good, portions great and a beautiful beach beside it - what's not to like!

For a pub there was a good choice of food - there was 7 in our party and we all chose different meals. Good portion size, food arrived fast and was nice and hot. Very friendly staff.

Good honest, straightforward pub-grub.Given that there are only 3 options to eat at Newgale and one is closed in winter anyway, the DofE is a good choice.Service is good, the pub is clean and well run, and the food is reasonably priced and quite tasty.Eaten here several times and today was a simple lunchtime sandwich while walking the dog.We had the tuna melt panini and a prawn baguette. Both were tasty and served with a reasonable side salad and coleslaw.Very nice and good value.

Stop off for a quick drink on the way back from St Davids to capture some sunset photos.Clean, friendly, good parking. We got there at the wrong time to eat, hence no food review.

Walking into this pub was like going back to my childhood. A good, old fashioned, friendly place. It has a family room with pool table, quiz machine and retro Space Invaders! The food was very reasonable and plentiful. My husband and I had a tasty curry with chips, rice, popadom, salad and coleslaw. Very substantial. The children's meals were good - pizza with chips and peas, and a very good macaroni cheese with garlic bread. The pizza did seem to be frozen (although it was cooked thoroughly) but the macaroni was definitely homemade. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, and we will return again before our holiday is over.

This pub benefits from a terrific location across the road from the stunning Newgate beach, having said that you cannot see the sea from the pub.Food was basic, not memorable, service is slow, and when we went to pay the machine would not accept Irish credit or debit cards which was very embarrassing as we had intended to invite our family for the meal. The barman said that often happened with foreign cards but he didn't apologise or care. There is nowhere else in the village for an evening meal so I can't say I won't be back but I would not choose to return.

Ok pub, nothing special, peroni is far too expensive cheaper in the centre of Birmingham, suggest I fine for an afternoon pint in the sun.

Abbiamo cenato in questo pub tradizionale con cibi molto buoni e un servizio amichevole. Il locale è carino e i gestori sono ragazzi simpatici e accoglienti, abbiamo passato una serata molto piacevole. Consigliatissimo.

Came here with my grandparents this weekend for dinner and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The pub has the perfect positioning right on Newgale beach, the views are fantastic. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. I had a steak baguette, and it was beautiful, perfectly cooked, fresh, with great chips and salad. Could not fault. I initially thought it was a tad expensive, but the portion and quality proved me wrong. Would definitely come for another. Have to say the menu is a little limited, but with how nice the food I ordered was and how friendly the staff and everybody else was along with a really nice atmosphere, it more than made up for it.

Was not keen on the place when we arrived. A bit soulless, there was no where quiet to eat after a busy day and thought the range of food was limited. However when we received the food it was hot, plentiful and tasty.

Food is okay provided you don't expect too much. Dishes are basic pub grub items which would be fine if they were cooked fresh and with some pride but alas it's not so.I'm not saying it's bad, just that it could be so much better. I think it's a systematic failing of 95% of pubs in Pembrokeshire - lack of competition means they can get away with passing off supermarket frozen chips and Aldi burgers, after a while they start believing their own hype that this is what the customer wantsWell this customer was disappointed with yet another 'Pembrokeshire pub special'

After a great surf on one of Pembrokeshires most beautiful beaches, we decided to grab a coffee to enjoy on the beach while we waited for the kids. We went into the Duke pub to order 2 takeaway coffees and was totally horrified when they charged me £10.80!!!!!! FOR 2 COFFEES ... I said they could of at least wore a mask if they were going to rob us. Never again!!.

Absolutely amazing food. Excellent service. Nothing is too much trouble. Staff are friendly, chatty & helpful, and it’s clean. Definitely recommend the coronation chicken, cheese salad. Hubby had baked spud first time which he enjoyed & baguette 2nd time each he enjoyed. And the cakes WOW!! I will miss the carrot cake which I highly recommend & the custard slice is just as amazing. The cost is brilliant too. Thanks you Phillys Baguettes

Ordered two crab sandwiches latte and a beer, £35. Staff need a pick me up or it’s been a hard season. The crab sandwich was good, spoonful of coleslaw, frozen chips. Was told to help myself to a glass for the beer, everyone looked not properly washed, picked the cleanest but still had bubbles down inside indicating grease. Latte was tasteless. Not a pleasant experience won’t be back.

I've never felt the need to write a review, as quite simply, if it's good we'll return if it's bad we won't! However, as we are regular visitors to St Davids to see family, this time, I've had to make an exception. We always like to visit St Davids Cathedral & stop at The Refectory for lunch.. What's gone wrong ? Not much choice as it's a very limited menu. Doesn't seem to be a manager or anyone in charge, it's more like lads on a night out. Bad language, dirty uniforms & very unorganised (putting it politely). We've always enjoyed visiting in the past but this experience makes us not want to come back again. After talking with family about our disappointing visit, we discovered there has been a change in management & staff. Standards have declined, the level of customer service, personal hygiene and food quality are extremely below standard. It's such a shame as previous visits have always been positive even during busy times.
