Couldn't fault our dinner with friends at Ducks. Friendly service, lovely atmosphere and incredible food. In particular I have to shout out the desert which featured a sea buckthorn sorbet - genius! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone.

We were blown away by everything at Ducks restaurant! The host Daniel went above and beyond for us. He was so kind and attentive, and treated us like old friends. The service was wonderful - we got to interact with several knowledgeable servers and sommeliers who really spent time with us to understand our likes/dislikes. Management even came over personally to introduce himself and check on us - We thought that was so nice! Now the food… We were absolutely blown away!! We had the duck and the Sunday roast along with a few appetizers. Then for dessert we did the sticky toffee pudding which was heavenly!!! You need to get it!! This is the best meal we had during our entire 9-day Scotland trip! And finally, as if I needed more reason to love this place, they sent over some wine when they heard we were celebrating our recent engagement! A classy, incredibly special place and people!! We hope to come back again!! Thank you Daniel and team for your kindness and attention to detail!

Lunch out with friends required somewhere relaxed with good food out of Edinburgh. Ducks Restaurant fitted the bill, so we booked. The restaurant or bar were offered, so we opted for the restaurant. Pleasant ambience indoors, but can see the courtyard seating would be lovely on a nicer day. Short menu of bar food and a la carte available, but the Sunday lunch of Roast beef called all of us. And it was well worth it. Tasty, tender, tasty beef with great accompaniments and a really lovely hot horseradish sauce. One of the best roast dinners I have had. Tasty range of puddings to wrap up. Rhubarb medley and chocolate sphere were both excellent, flavoursome and elegant too. Service attentive from a relatively young front of house team. You can see they are being trained properly. Malcolm Duck popped in to say hello and ask about our meal. It’s nice when restaurant owners do that. Overall a great experience and well worth the short trip to Aberlady.

Just moved into the area and thought we'd check out the Ducks ! Nice restaurant, staff and service. We asked for 2 glasses of wine, Rioja which were very nice but at £10 each, felt they were over priced ! Likewise bread with our starter, 2 small swirls of bread, £3.50 was excessive. No problem with the starters or mains but if we had known we could have bought a bottle at £20/25. Possible our fault but it just gave us a slight negative attitude to a otherwise nice lunch.

Stopped in here whilst our sightseeing - Sunday lunch, table available (no problem) and the service was exceptional. My food was wonderful - I had the chicken with tomato & mozzarella.. Hubby had the burger and thought it was just 'ok'. The chips were lovely 😊 Such a shame that this place isn't busier as it needs and deserves to be.. My only real fault - the music was a touch loud for me.

Received a gift voucher for an overnight stay with breakfast and a bottle of prossecco. When we phoned to book we were able to get the date we wanted to stay without any bother. On arrival check in was speedy and efficient and we were given directions to our room. The ensuite room had everything we needed, bed was very comfortable and there were toiletries and tissues in the bathroom. Our wine was sitting in a wine cooler with two champagne flutes awaiting our arrival. We had a dog with us and it was very convenient for us that the room key also opened the rear fire exit onto the car park and as this was nearer to our room than the front door we ended up using this door to unloads car and also to let dog out. We didn't eat here the night we arrived but the breakfast menu was lovely with plenty of choice and everything freshly made to order. All members of staff were very nice and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

We (2 adults, 2 kids) had the pleasure of eating in Ducks, Aberlady, for Sunday lunch. The food was delicious and there were mountains of it… Large lamb roast, shepherd's pie, huge Yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, carrots in thyme, homemade bread, gravy and then, just when we thought we'd finished, winter apple crumble (flavoured with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg) and homemade vanilla custard. Chef is formerly of Pompadour and it showed. 2AA Rosettes.Service was excellent. Really. Malcolm Duck came over to see us half a dozen times before, during and after we'd eaten. The meal was excellent in every aspect. Service very slow, which was a little frustrating as we had 3 small children with us, who were getting fidgety, but I do plan to go back and spend a leisurely evening there. The cauliflower soup was the smoothest I have even had, the pork was perfectly cooked, with a lovely glaze to the sauce, and the rice pudding was delicious - the addition of plums and nuts was a really successful finish.

Brought aged parents and twenty something offspring to Duck's for a relaxed Saturday lunch. The restaurant was very quiet, a lovely sunny day outside for bar snacks that looked delicious, but we were intent on something more serious. No starters, but the main courses were the Rib of Beef which was delicious and generous, two steaks which were dealt with well, alongside the generous plate of chunky chips, and a very nice crusted salmon with hollandaise and orange slices to garnish - excellent. Desserts were good too, ice cream with an unusual toffee apple flavour, and a very nice pudding rice with hazelnuts and plum. All in all a very nice meal, house wine was very good and service very sociable. There is car parking at the rear, although beware of the entrance to the car park - it's narrow and the turn at the bottom is at right angles. One for the confident driver!

The bar felt very much for ' locals' and we were rescued by one of the waiters who could tell we didn't know where we were meant to go, we didn't want reataurant dining, but felt the limited pub grub menu was almost too limited. What we ordered ( fish & chips, Ducks burger) were fine. Nothing special, but nothing wrong either. I can't put my finger on it, but there was something disjointed about the whole place. It was our last day on a family holiday on Scotland and we decided to treat ourselves toA breakfast - this was a disappointment to be quite honest. For my partner he had. Breakfast included bacon, beans, sausage, haggis and pouches eggs. Mine was a veggie option and consisted of beans, 2 veg sausages (rubbish) and 2 poached eggs which were too runny for me. I asked for plenty of toast and gotA basket of 2 toast cut into 4 between me and my partner we are both big and enjoy a meal. My kids had beans on toast with a sausage each which again was one toast each. I had a coffee and my partner a tea and my two kids a orange juice. We had friendsJoin us for a 2 coffees and a soft drink for the baby. I asked for 4 more toast and again for 2 toast cut in half . The service was good and the venue was child friendly they had colouring books and pencils and toys for kids. The venue itself was nice but the food was not that great and over priced in my opinion costing £46 . No hash browns(As promised) I did say no black pudding or mushrooms and checked there would be hash browns and asked for plenty of toast . We got Groupon Tasting Menu vouchers so we could treat the parents and what a fabulous Saturday night we had! Devil’s in the detail, and even the Prosecco was served with a perfect raspberry in each glass. Napery and drapery are quite formal but the atmosphere is relaxed and very friendly. The wine list is extensive, ranging from the affordable to the ridiculous – we plumped for a highly acceptable Fleurie (which was delicately poured into a decanter: lovely touch, looked wonderful in the twinkling candlelight) and one of MD’s recommendations Mont de Joie. Oh yes. Need more. Everything was just done so beautifully. Bread – generous baskets with proper, good bread - wasn’t brought to the table so ridiculously early that we’d gorged ourselves full before our delightful porky amuse-bouche arrived. Pigeon, East Lothian Garden (so pretty!) and seafood lasagne starters were all excellent. One went native with venison (last tried with disastrous consequences in France in the 1980s) but this … this was sublime. Everyone else had monkfish and enjoyed it. Then there was a cup of pre-dessert, most unusual combination of thyme and lime which was absolutely sensational. Finally we all had the trio of desserts: perfect mini pear soufflé, delicate sorbet and apple tartlet. Full marks for presentation, balance and flavours throughout. Wonderful ambience, wonderful food, wonderful evening. Must return soonest!

I bought a Groupon for here for the taster menu and thought would give it a try given the AA rosette status even though its a half hour drive from Edinburgh. It was certainly worth the drive. We were initially greeted by a very pleasant smiling server who took our coats and then shown our seats by the waiter. The waiter was very friendly and attentative all night without being too formal. Initial entry to the hotel is an old style bar but very warm and inviting. The main restaurant has 9 tables and is a pleasantly decorated living room which mixes old with new decor. There is lovely soft lighting with spotlights and candles. What makes it really appealing is there is a beautiful open fire which we were sat beside. The taster menu itself is of a very high standard but stand out dishes for me was the pigeon starter, beautiful venison Wellington and the pear souffle. I only wish the souffle was bigger. Funnily enough the bread served deserves a mention- it was a small sliced loaf which was still warm. The dish was devine- tomato and pepper which doesn't sound particularly nice but was really tasty. Overall, I'd highly recommend eating here as over the years I've been to many restaurants and generally in the city at these sort of establishments its generally very formal or servers try get you out quickly to turn the tables around. Its a really nice change to get fine dining in such a lovely ambiance and food of equal standard. Its definitely worth coming here and will return

Thanks to all the staff at Ducks for a superb evening meal. We started with Pigeon then went on to have Monkfish for main, both excellent dishes. The Pear Souffle to finish was delicate and perfectly executed. We will be back, hopefully soon.

A clever menu which promised a lot and then delivered. An interesting wine list and we found a South African wine which was dominated by Pinotage but in fact was a blend of 4 grapes.

the worst Christmas dinner ever the turkey on the plate was shaved and virtually non existent I got one sprout my son didn't get any the smoked salmon was virtually non existent in the blini the mince pies were mince pie canapes. the cheese and crackers was just cheese as my son got 2 tiny crackers the size of mini cheddars. when I phoned mr duck he said every plate had 8 to 10 sprouts insinuating that I was lying he was the rudest man I have ever encountered and very unprofessional I paid £177 for 3 people to come home starving. my husband and I are pensioners and not big eaters. don't go there the worst chrismas dinner ever.

Enjoyed an overnight at the Ducks last Friday and dined in Donald's which was very good.Very friendly owners and staff which makes all the difference. Made to feel very welcome.Room was very comfortable and clean. Free wifi a plus and plenty of parking at the rear. Hotel is perhaps described as quirky - a positive statement with of course ducks all over the place as the owners are Malcolm and Fiona Duck.

Stayed in the hotel last week, where the rooms were comfortable and clean. Started our evening with a cocktail, fuzzy duck, since we were staying it ducks, it was nice. We decided to try out their restaurant set menu in Ducks where we were certainly not disappointed. The scallops starter was absolutely amazing. Followed by the fillet of beef, there isn't many restaurants you can go now and order a steak and you don't need a steak knife to cut the meat. This was so tender and soft, elegantly presented and an amazing experience,Wine on offer....woow, you'll never witness a larger selection, prices started at under £20 which I was very surprised at with it being a 2 rosette establishment.Service was great, they cant do enough for you.We have booked again for January. Dinner, bed and breakfast deal, as it saves us getting a taxi back to Edinburgh.

The service was not bad, but long, bread was nice, but main courses were just not good. Too much oil, not enough taste... Just cheap pub quality food. Too pricy for what you get.

We stayed at the craigielaw golf club and thought a walk into Aberlady would be nice. We found the Ducks Restaurant. The other pub, The Old Aberlady had closed down. We found the bar and ordered a nice drink. There was a good selection of ales and beers. The pub area was full of locals with dogs (climbing on the furniture) and it was clear we were not to venture there as there was a game on sky sports. We sat in the restaurant which seemed very nice and quaint but as we discovered that was where the service ended. The young man serving us was clearly not happy to be there as he pointed out to us he had worked 12 days straight without a day off. The older gentleman who also served us seemed as though it was our privilege to be in the pub and not theirs. The food was excellent if not a little too gastro pub. Frozen butter and dim lighting. The meal was excellent but the pub itself is trying to be something you would find in a busier area. If you wish to eat good food but wish to be made to feel an inconvenience then this is the place for you.

We have eaten here over three times recently. The food is cooked to the highest standard and everything is so delicious it's hard to choose from the menu. It always feels like a ' special' occasion and the ambiance and stating is just lovely. Highly recommend.

I've always passed this by, on the way to North Berwick and wondered what it was like. I found it to be delicious. Thoughtful put together, well presented, charmingly severed. Plus the sunshine in the courtyard. It was a lovely lunch.

I went for lunch with a friend to Duck's at Aberlady today - a restaurant we have enjoyed in the past but will not be visiting again. We were the only people in for lunch on a sunny day in August which perhaps speaks for itself. In the past Duck's have offered a very good bar menu and a good value 2 course lunch in the restaurant. These appear to be things of the past and we were offered the full price bistro menu. We were shown into the empty restaurant and brought a basket of bread which was stale, sliced, mass produced soda or wheaten bread. This was disappointing to start with as in the past home made bread has been served as standard. I ordered the chowder - when it arrived it consisted of a bowl of cream with a rectangle of smoked haddock and a rectangle of potatoes dauphnoise floating in it. The potato was still hard i.e.not cooked. When I raise this with the waitress she said she would talk to the chef and then came back and reported that this was the first complaint he had ever had about the chowder. I was offered no alternative and charged the full amount although it was not edible. We had been planning a dersert but decided to cut our losses and go elsewhere. As we left staff were decorating the empty bar for Christmas which added a bizarre note to a disappointing visit.

"Where shall we eat tonight?" we mulled, on a beautiful Saturday evening in East Lothian. "How about Ducks Restaurant in Aberlady?" We had often passed by and wondered if the restaurant was any good. Tonight we thought we would give it a try. We pulled up just before 7.30pm and entered the establishment. Greeted by an elderly gentleman, we confessed that we didn't have a reservation, but was there the possibility of a table for two? "Certainly" he said, ushering us into the bar area. "Someone through here will be able to help you..... hopefully", he continued with some uncertainty. Handing us over to a young lady, the young lady consulted with the young male colleague hovering at the end of the bar. "Do we have a table?", she enquired with her colleague with equal uncertainty. "We might have have..... at a push", he replied with an unpleasant snarl, trying with ample success not to acknowledge either me nor my partner. Clearly we were an irritating inconvenience! We were told a table would be available in 5 minutes and were asked to sit at a bar table to await our calling. 5 minutes elapsed and no table materialised. We decided to leave. We headed for a familair haunt, The Old Clubhouse in Gullane, where we were warmly greeted and even though clearly very busy, the effort was made to accomodate us in the restaurant. What a contrast to Ducks, Aberlady, who's customer experience was reminescient of that to be experienced in a the very worst of a 1970's 'caf'.

We stumbled across this gem after a round of golf, but came back for dinner and were blown away. The food was terrific, the service excellent, wine ditto. And it has such a delightful atmosphere, neither too formal nor the reverse. AND! --when we asked them, they turned off the piped music!! Bliss! Really nice. We'll go back.

This was a lovely place to eat, we were welcomed with our dog, to sit inside. The staff were bubbly and helpful. Unfortunately, the waitress was French, which she kept telling us every time we asked her a question. Maybe she was just new, maybe it's because I'm a Geordie, but I was a little surprised to find that level of language barrier in such a high class looking establishmentAll the same, the food was immense!! I had the steak and ale pie and I found myself in a culinary daydream. It was amazing.

The 'country hotel' is the graveyard of many good restaurateurs, with high expectations, seasonal swings, weather and fashion trends. So the trick must be to stick to reliable basics and add frills where affordable. Be ready for high volume but be profitable at low turnover So Mr Duck at kilspindie, in the long-established East Lothian coastal magnet of Aberlady, is succeeding. Sunday lunch with the crowd-pleasing basics available, and a touch of sophistication. Nice wines, nice beers. Nice service from charming foreign girls, with ruthless scottish instruction being meted out to the experienced.

"Jewel in the Crown" has said it all really, but to reiterate, the food and service were first class. With 3 cars between 4 of us we could not explore the wine list much but it looked impressive. The young mostly French staff were very attentive and greatly added to a very enjoyable evening.

Where to start. First the elderly lady behind the counter didn't won't to serve us or anyone for that matter, so a man took over. The large breakfast my husband ordered was no bigger than my small one, both breakfast were luke warm, and the drinks barely hot. Apparently they aren't allowed to sell the meals to hot? if this is right they should install a microwave somewhere so the customer can heat there own own meals.
