The best on the Barbican, nothing flash about this great pub, the bonus is NO pool table, dart board or music, just great conversation, a roaring open fire (winter) amazing beer with the best pint of bass in Devon and Cornwall, if you are in the Plymouth area DO NOT miss a chance to visit this awesome place situated in the heart of one of the most historical cities in England, plus it's only a stone's throw away from the famous Mayflower Steps. This pub allows outside food and PLEASE NOTE this is just a public house and NOT A HOTEL. My latest visit today 12/09/23 on a late Tuesday afternoon thankfully nothing has changed, the main Street was fairly busy and inside the Dolphin it was quite busy with a few tables stll available, the gravity fed pint of Bass was exceptional as always, I can only repeat from my earlier comment that this is still the very best public house in the Barbican area and is one of the top two best pubs in Plymouth, it is still a CAMRA members dream pub. 14//09/24, late afternoon on the first day of Plymouth 'Seafest' (look it up), unsurprisingly the Dolphin is very busy, I'm happy to report that absolutely nothing has changed, except the pint of Bass was possibly even better.

This is simply as good as pubs get. It is mercifully unchanged and is full of character and characters. The beer is amazing straight from the barrel. You simply must order a pint of Bass. The drink of the gods. Just visit, and do it now. Check out the art on the walls as well.

Possibly the most authentic atmospheric pub you could find set in the middle of Plymouth’s historic Barbican. Famous for the association with Beryl Cook and the Tolpuddle Martyrs this pub offers an incredible experience. At least 7 real ales on tap and famous for cask Bass. No food served but you’re welcome to bring your own with pasties and fish n chips all available next door. A proper Janner highlight of A Plymouth day out.

Great afternoon at the Dolphin with great friends. As an ex-publican I feel I have a unique ability to judge the quality of what a pub has to offer. As soon as i entered I knew that this was my idea of what a pub should be like. There was a loud buzz of conversation and a homely feel about the place which along with a superb pint of Bass. or 3 brought a continuous smile to my face. Drink with conversation, proper old school yet still appealing to the younger generation. To top it off they just happen to have a wonderful Chippy nearly next door from where we had a carry-out, and ate it right there on the bar table. Left after a few hours wishing desperately that I lived in Plymouth,

In a city full of somebodies, this is a rare pub. It has character. Something you don't find often in the inner cities. It is a spit and sawdust kind of pub, has a good feel with true locals at the helm. A good selection of beers and drinks for any person. The odd local celebrity comes in from time to time, for instance Birdman. (look him up for more info). This place is a little gem.

The 'atmosphere' makes a pub, and the dolphin has the feel of a cold, damp ship with the only warmth coming from the practising sea chanty band that bless the pub every so often. Still, the warmth of the sea chanties couldn't prepare us for the barmaids' faces upon our arrival, which welcomed us with a mix of distain and annoyance. With a leaky ceiling, clinically bright bulbs, and artwork detailing out of date events, the famous dolphin hotel didn't have the awe that it legend portrayed. The fact is that there are better pubs on the Barbican. With some TLC, this pub could reclaim its legend. I hope it does.

Wonderful however struggling to understand why the menu isn't fully vegan. Ethos is around non violence to living beings so why on earth is the dairy industry supported by yourselves? All of your vegetarian options could be made vegan especially in todays times we have vegan yogurt, milk, butter even paneer and ghee! Please look into this and make the change if not for us, for the poor animals
