Dolphin Chippy in Halton

Haven't used these for a couple of years. Good friendly service but, sadly, the quality was very poor and not at all like it used to be. Three different meals and all were very disappointing.

A chippy branded "filthy" by food hygiene inspectors was shut down immediately then allowed to reopen two days later after a clean-up. Dolphin Supper Bar on Halton Road in Runcorn received an "emergency prohibition notice" from Halton Borough Council’s environmental health team last Wednesday, April 26, due to conditions that "posed an imminent risk to health

Cannot recommend you buy from here. Scallops were like eating pure fat, fat was just running off them. Fish was very very dry

Ordered threw uber and it kept getting pushed back and other stops on route and with a cyclist ! Exactly as expected arrived cold troed to eat the tiny portion and then binned after bite of the sausage that was freezing , I messaged the rider who ignored me uber also refused to help so app deleted and dolphin itself blacklisted with us won't ever return

I have always liked this chippy as it’s local and the staff are always polite. The cod and egg fried rice was great, I might have to try the chow mein next time.

Recommended by friends, my husband and I tried their takeout for dinner recently. Their special noodle box was not only delicious but also a great value. If we have friends over next time, we'll definitely give their budget-friendly meal deal a shot. Thanks!: )

We will never ever go back to this horrible dirty place ever again 🤮 we where so ill and when we heard it had been closed down due to its hygiene you make me sick should of never been allowed to reopen

This used to be a great chippy it's now not nice food in my opinion and expensive. Won't be using this one ever again

Where do I start! I placed an order for my daughter, chicken fried rice, amongst other dishes, came to £30 which I was shocked at the prices for a local Chinese chippy ! got home and they’d given us fried rice instead of chicken fried rice. Went back in and they TOLD me that I had placed the order incorrectly to which I said I hadn’t, they were all 6 of them arguing with me and laughing at me! I can honestly say that I’ve never experienced such disgusting behaviour ever! Still wanted to charge me despite their mistake, I gave them their money anyway. The place is absolutely FILTHY, the food is overpriced and disgusting! I’ll be reporting to food hygiene first thing in the morning. The place needs closing down!

Got a Curry Beef and Boiled rice, it was a nice meal. I ordered it over the phone, and it was ready for me when I walked in. Very polite staff.

Absolutely disgusting meal this evening, ordered special black pepper sauce, what I received was an enormous amount of green peppers and onions probably to bulk out the dish , as for the special part all that was in it was was 3 pieces of slimy beef , NO chicken or pork or prawns , any way I phone to complain all they offered was £2 pound off my next meal I’ll tell you what shove your next meal where the sun don’t shine

Order lots of food yesterday over the phone. Great portions. Delivery was spot on the time given. Still warm and and well wrapped up. And great value to.

Ordered tea to be picked up, salt and pepper ribs that were dripping in brown grease, they were also more fat than meat, a won ton soup that was just like salty water and last but not least salt and pepper chips that looked like they had already been chewed, avoid using this chippy, there are lots more in Runcorn that are far better.

Boxing day, arrived to pick up a telephone order only to be ignored by several ignorant staff behind the counter who where also ignoring other customers. When I finally got one to speak to me after 15 mins, very rudely, it appeared I had been given the wrong order number over the phone, others also had this problem. They had also sent out orders for delivery to wrong addresses, this became apparent when people started to arrive to pick up their orders. Total kayos, very rude ignorant staff and no food. Thanks for ruining my evening. The food really isn't that good here, I would advise you spend your money elsewhere. Also no social distancing what so ever so be careful if you do decide to go here.

Ordered food by phone for collection. They was getting food ready when we arrived to collect which on the whole was nice. Chips could have been improved though. A bit greasy, but still eatable. Would also appreciate slightly smaller portion sizes which would avoid waste. Overall good experience.

This was the first time we have used the dolphin for probably 6months or so and to be honest I had read the recent reviews And I couldn’t believe how people thought this chippy had gone down Well I would like to say tonight meal was Excellent crispy chilli beef egg fried rice and chicken and pineapple was both tasty, well cooked hot even after the delivery which arrived within half an hour of us ordering Well done to all the staff and management at the dolphin we will definitely use you again thank you..

First visit to carry out fish and chips.portion size enormous, fish we'll cooked, would recommend fish dinner as it includes gravy peas and onions great taste.Kids cod bites meal great, and adult size.Service fast and efficient, only little disappointment size of sausages.Size matters to sausage eaters.

This used to be a really nice chippy. We keep giving it another go thinking it will improve as we live nearby. Everytime we have been, I say never again but tonight I mean it! Chips were white! The sweet and sour chicken was just horrid. Definitely our last visit.

My husband and I would have returned this awful so called fish and chips if we didn't have to come back over the Runcorn bridge.....they are cleaver at hiding a small bit of fish inside the worse batter we have ever had,Infact its very rare we have a takeaway and I must say its put us off having one ever again..

We've been using the Dolphin regularly over the years and can honestly say that we've never had a bad meal from there. The price and portions are great and the food is always cooked to perfection. Would recommend it to anyone.

Ordered takeaway last night the guy on the phone was extremely rude - spoke to me like dirt - I was trying to ask about prices and he was very unhelpful - in the end still got the order wrong - won’t be ordering from here again !!! Food lukewarm

This takeaway produces and supplies a menu both paper and online which is totally wrong if you order a meal be expected to pay another £3-£4 on top of what you order when I phoned up to complain about this first they said the boss was called Michael, but didn't know his full name. I will be contacting the correct authorities about this company. The written menu is still being distributed from the premises now.

December was my first visit to Dolphin in many many years. Never again. The guy was very rude on the phone and extremely unhelpful. Still ordered as it was my guest's choice. Most of food was great but took over an hour and half to arrive and chips cold when it eventually did turn up. Would not mind about the price and wait if customer service was much better.Decided to give them another try a few weeks later as we did like the food, however upon ringing to place order the guy's telephone manner was once again so horrendous that I decided not to place the order. Won't use again.

The only reason I go here is that the food is great. The staff are Very rude and talk to you like dirt. When you ring to order your food they are rude on the phone. The English Staff in there are great with you when you go in to collect your food.

Me and my wife suezanne have ordered alot from here for ourselfs and my 3 beautiful sons, we was sitting down to watch a family film, and as we all tucked into our food we found a toe nail in the special chow mein!!! Service is shocking. Went in and ordered. Still waiting over 40 mins later. They lost the order so had to start over again. Food was no where good as it use to be. Used to be amazing. Now not at all.

Went there the last 2 weeks as our regular (Langgy) is closed while they're on holiday. Oh my, both times I've had bad reactions from the amount of MSG and salt they put in the meals. Found it difficult to breath through inflamed sinuses and sleep, and the next day I feel more dehydrated then Gandhi's flip flop.

Have eaten at this takeaway for years as by far the best in Runcorn, but sadly has gone down hill. The chips are awful the curry sauce is far too spicy, the meals are not good unsure what has happened but have to find another takeaway as this place has gone right down in standards

Having moved over the water to Widnes, I have not had the pleasure of ordering from The Dolphin for 18+ months, unfortunately, I will not be ordering again. What was once one of the best takeaways in Runcorn is now a mear shadow of its former self.

A friend said this was a lovely Chinese.......... Well i was a little puzzed as it is classed as a fish and chip shop but as they had said the Chinese was really nice thought we would give it a go. Ordered our food and it arrived within 30 minutes. Wished we stuck with our normal take away, It was awful, The chicken chow mein was just noodles with dry Chicken placed on top, The fried rice was all stuck together and inedible, the sweet and sour chicken was large strips of again very dry chicken with the batter so thick and greasy we had to remove it and then were unable to eat as it was so tough, the chicken curry should of been on the menu as mushroom curry as there was only 3 small pieces of chicken in it, The salt and pepper chicken was so dry and again unable to eat, We ordered some chips as well which was really handy as we ended up having just these. Will never eat from this place again and would never advise anyone else to go here.

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the food in this review as we did not receive it. If you have 3hr30mins of your life to spare whip shindlers list on and hopefully your food will arive by the end of it

The Dolphin is one of the best chippys we have in Runcorn, the only problem is it could do with being bigger. If you turn up here on most tea times your squished in the chippy like sardines. Having said that you are served in a timely manner and the food keeps you coming back for more.

Disgusting. Don’t buy food from here. It’s greasy, cold, and I’m sure it gave me a bad tummy. We used the place once but never again. I wouldn’t even give it 1 star.

This takeaway is consistently busy and, after tasting the food, it isn’t difficult to see why. Despite being very busy at times the staff and chefs manage to produce really good food and quickly.

I rate this chippy as having the best Chinese food in Runcorn always hot plentiful freshly cooked and reasonably priced!

Ordered 2 rice meals but didn't realise how big they were, I shared a portion of chicken fried rice with my son and had to give lots to our dog because there was so much had lots of fresh chicken in. Husband had special friend rice and had to save it for another meal the next day, would recommend 1 portion for 2 people as they are very big. Really fresh and was able to pick up within 20 mins of ordering.

have used this chip shop for years always a high standard can get very busy at peak times and so expect delays in delivery if ordering friday/Saturday night.

Difficult to get in touch with, but it's a bank holiday so fair enoughThe lass who answered the phone was so surly that I thought she'd have a great job in debt collection. I say surly, I mean rude. Food was average. Took an extra half hour for delivery (on top of the hour they quoted) and I was shocked to see I'd been charged 3 quid for delivery. BBQ ribs were just sweet and wet, no sticky BBQ sauce that you would expect. Vermicelli was 90% noodles and seaweed cloyingly sweet.Relatively generous portions but I'd rather have had quality than quantity.

As someone who is not a local but has often seen that this is a busy chippy at lunch time I suspected this place must be good. Visited with hungry husband this week for the first time. All we had was one big bag of chips, and it was without doubt the best chips we have had in many years. Hubby was still raving about them the next day. Just a shame we don't live closer

Best chippy in runcorn.... gorgeous curry sauce... salt and pepper chips are amazing... everything is always tasty and hot the do deliver but die to being the best they are extremely busy so you are looking at 45mins to an hour for your food but so worth it. The only downside is they don't take card.....

This has to be the best Chinese in the area. The food is great and the portions large. OK it takes ages to ring a order through or the queue is a massive but its well worth the wait. We have been to others in the area and have been disappointed. There is a Chinese 2 minutes walk from where we live but we still choose to drive to this one and wait in line to get served. Reading other reviews it does take time to get a delivery but that's because they are so busy.

Chips are white undercooked and hard...this isn't the first time ..last 4 times...steak was like leather..we will try somewer Else from now on..

The food here is great, fresh and hot. The waiting time for food though can get a bit ridiculous. When busy there is over a ten minute wait just for something simple like a bag of chips. Again though, food is great, cant really fault the place for any other detail.

I'd always heard people saying how good the Dolphin chippy is but never had one. As I'm from Frodsham, it wasn't that close to me. However my boyfriend introduced me to it and it really is so good! The staff are friendly and even though there is always a bit of a queue (another indication of its popularity) the service is still as quick as possible. My favourite is the chicken in cashew nuts but often as a family we have picked a few meals and shared. All the dishes we've had so far are clearly made fresh and they don't skimp on the portions. I often judge how good a Chinese take away is by how fresh the prawn crackers are and once again Dolphin does not disappoint! Definitely worth a trip to.

Great choice of food, good Banquet deals which are on the generous side. A banquet for 3 will feed 3 adults and 3 children. Great value for money. The staff can be quite flippant and sometimes rude by talking to each other in their language whilst serving you, but if you can over look this it's worth it for their Chinese menu.

The female who I think manages the chip shop is very corrupt when it comes to ordering food. Food seems to taste brilliant but arrives within two hours later. Prices are good. Couldn't a fault the food. Terrible lady who takes phone orders, never smiles.

I have never, ever met such a horrible woman when being served in a chippy. She reluctantly stopped talking to her colleague to take my order and then disappeared to answer the phone - taking the colleague with her! By the time she came back the fish was burned and she had to start again. I said I couldn't wait any longer and wAnted my money back. She then went into a strop as if her appalling service was my fault. She became quite abusive, saying I was being too impatient. Had been there over twenty five minutes by now on an hours lunch break. Got money back eventually and left.I will never set foot in in that godforsaken place again. Why does the owner allow her to behave in this way? Baffling.

Great food, you only have to see how many people are getting meals. We have never had a bad meal, They offer a very good range of dishes which can make it a little difficult to choose.

Absolutely love this place! We don't go to any other chippy in Runcorn. The prices are reasonable for the food and the options are endless. The adhere to any dietary requirements customers may have an always serve you as quickly as possible. The food is always piping hot and delicious.

Its not bad here. I would visit again, but maybe with lower expectations. The food is nice enough, a little too greasy and the chips tasted like they had been in the hot hold for a bit too long as they'd lost all their crispness. It wasn't awful though, just average.

Fast service lovely food...maybe a little expensive for a large family, maybe offer a family menu to cut down costs..otherwise nice and clean. and nice food

The staff can be surly, the queues are often out of the door and if you phone for delivery expect the contempt you deserve, it's a chippy !, but one you can depend on to be good every time you go and unlike other chippys in town it has consistently been rated 5 star for cleanliness .If you want good food make the effort and travel down and queue with the rest of us , if you want fast delivery and the sh1ts go elsewhere

Don't get me wrong this chippy is nice, but nothing compared to Klees. This chippy is highly overrated in Runcorn and I don't get what all the fuss is about.Would be nice to put somebody new on the phones and the current lady has a serious attitude problem and no phon manners what so ever.

My girth has now expanded and i'm close to popping. One more quality street and i will explode. Arriving at dolphin supper bar my eyes welled knowing my intention is never to visit another chippy again. Upon arriving home and beginning to eat i was met with the hottest thing i have put in my mouth (apart from my partner of course) heavens and the lord up above it was like a volcano had erupted! I asked for spicy and i got SPICY- the hottest chips ever- to say they were delicious is an understatement... The diet is out of the window! Who was i kidding! Not very pleasant staff which was much like their food. Chips were average and sausage batter was a bit soggy.After purchasing 3 meals we were only given two forks which made things messy later

Team from work order from here regularly on weekly basis, the food is outstanding both English or Chinese choice all worth a visit to try !

Love love love this chippy and definitely good value for money, even if the delivery charge is very expensive, the only issue with this place is the extremely rude women who is on the phone orders as she has no customer service whatsoever and should not be in charge of interacting with people with such a terrible attitude!! Went tonight(Fri) at 5.30,it was jam packed.Great meeting place for a natter.Waited 20 mins for my salt and pepper chicken,well worth the wait as it was simply Amazing,had it with chips/curry which was also very good.Have had the very special Spanish omelettes from there too which are out of this world and absolutely huge,they are that big they are moulded to the shape of the polystyrene box!I work in Runcorn but live in Huyton and wouldn't hesitate to commute from my home just to go here.Someone I work with takes his food back to Ellesmere Port from this cracker of a takeaway.In fact I heard someone saying that when he lived down South for a while he'd of stayed there if they'd had a chippy as good as this there! Nuf said!

Usual chippy was closed so tried here for delivery.After waiting the allocated time tried phoning to be met with dismissive,nasty staff.Waited another 30 minutes and no show so phoned again as only one of us still wanted food.Told to just cancel if we didn't like it.Eventually got a portion of ribs with the delivery costing nearly £10....They were okay but I think I'll stick to my usual chippy with excellent customer service and realistic delivery times.

Food is lovely and the ONLY reason i tolerate such abuse!They never treat you as a human being but an inconvenience. Despite knowing half of Runcorn complains about them, they continue to be rude! Langdale Road chippy food is nice and the staff are so lovely, it makes a refreshing change!

Iove this chippy and judging by the queues of people so does a lot of runcorn. The staff manage the queues well, taking orders as people arrive and keeping it moving. There is an extensive Chinese menu with plenty of vegetarian options. Chips are reliably fresh and hot and my husband reckons this chippy has the best battered fish ever.

When the young lad serves its like he's counting how many chips to give you, for what you pay is ridiculous.The woman on the phone/who takes the orders attitude is disgusting.And lastly I've worked in a food manufacturing factory for years an have to wear hair nets.Why aren't staff wearing hair nets? This food is being directly consumed am a few times I've had hairs in my tea from here.Langdale is my new takeaway

As the title states you are never hungry after eating from the Dolphin.Lady who takes the orders has had a charisma bypass though, shd really needs to learn to smile and say thankyou.But this is one very busy take away.From the fish and chips to the crispy duck, everything is xxl.

I visit the dolphin many times easy for parking outside or on the main road with a cash machine next door and a coop. The food is good and portions and big. They are always busy. Salt and pepper chicken is good here. The chips are good and do a wide range of Chinese dishes decent meat and portions in side.

Food is nice, woman who answers the phone is a rude patronising C U N T who has no manners when she says "over a hour" and you say that's ok she sounds disappointed dolphin would be a better and more pleasant place to eat if she didn't work there. RUDE

Definitely my fav local chippy. They do the best salt n pepper chips by far. You do wait awhile on deliverys but it does get very busy. I don't think I can fault it apart from that.

Good choice of food, chippy appears to be clean and English staff are quite friendly, Chinese staff not doing so well with this. My biggest gripe with this place is that in the past I used to feel this was the best chippy in town but lately they don't seem to be able to cook anything without large amounts of garlic in every meal!!! I would give this place a go but not if your planning on going out after eating.

Mostly, the food is nice and there aren't many good Chinese takeaways left in Runcorn, not ones that do real chips anyway. The Dolphin knows this and takes great advantage of the fact. They basically have too much custom on their hands to give a damn about even an above average level of customer service. Try getting through on their phone line on a weekend... it isn't happening. They have one person who can answer the phone, who is unbelievably jaded - I mean, she works very hard, but she is very, very miserable and surly. They have a system where she enables an engaged tone when she is too busy to answer or just can't be bothered, which it's normally one or the other and barely ever answers. It would be easier and less stressful to go and wrestle your own wild boar in Runcorn Hills with your bare hands and turn it into Char Siu.If there is a Canto/Chinese cooking family reading this, there is a fantastic opportunity in Runcorn for a decent takeaway; if you could produce great food with real chippy chips (very important, frozen chupo) and give the customer service the Dolphin don't, you could win a lot of custom from them. If anyone from the Dolphin is reading this, your food might currently be the best in Runcorn, but only by default. It doesn't even begin to compare to the food from the Regent Street chippy family who owned it in the '80s and '90s... and they were a lovely family and very friendly, I really miss them. It also doesn't compare to the food from Si and his lovely family who used to own the chippy by the arches in Dukesfield... he was an EXCELLENT chef his food had the wok hay and clean flavours yours never will. The Chinese takeaway situation in Runcorn is on its ar5e and needs some new blood to shake the Dolphin's arrogant monopoly up. To sum up, their food is decent, but do they deserve your custom? No, not really. Next best is Langsdale Road I guess, or EJ's in Frodsham if you can travel... just goes to show how bad the situation is in Runcorn when you'd consider travelling 5 miles for Chinese food. :-(

Absolutely appalled at the service from the dolphin chippy. I am a regular customer and always order 'vermicelli noodles' on a Tuesday evening. This particular evening was no different. However when presented with my order it was chow mien. When I explained to the woman that my order was wrong she screamed at me 'you ordered chow mien, I am not changing your order' she always called me stupid and swore at me numerous times. Other customers where in the store, I felt humiliated. She swore and made comments about my appearance as I was walking out of the door. I am left disheartened as I can't find anywhere to complain when a customer has been abused by a staff member. No other staff members helped and they just spoke in Chinese and then screamed at me in English. I am urging everyone to staff away from this place!

This is our favourite Chippy in Runcorn, we go twice a month usually. We have never had a bad meal yet and have been using it for years. The portions are big and the choice/variety of meals are huge. A 'must' to try out.

This must be the best Chinese chip shop in the north. Every time I go, there is a queue out of the door but the service is fast. You place your order and then join the queue. English as well as oriental food all cooked to perfection and very good. They also do takeaway and if you phone an order through before they open it will be delivered free of delivery charge before the first customer is served.

After your long day grab yourself a nice fish chips and peas And sit back and eat and enjoy ready for your trip back home

Whenever I come back to Runcorn I look forward to getting a take out from this chippy. The Chinese food is always tasty and cooked well. The chips are always just how I like them. The portions are also large, you feel like you are getting your money's worth. The only downside is there is always a big fast moving queue, which to be honest is a good thing.The staff are efficient and hardworking.

Title says it all. Really nice Chippy good food, generous portions on meals and most importantly Chips are nice.Staff where nice just wish they would smile more because they have a good chippy and should be proud of it.

When we moved to the area this was our local chippy but after the food being poor,large chips being small,no smiles and NO manners we have decided to go to frodsham for a decent chippy who do smile and who have manners!!With the amount of custom that go through there doors on a daily basis you would expect a thankyou once in a while!

There must be 20 chip shops in Runcorn and this one is best known for its queues which says it all, people come from all over the town for this excellent takeaway. Great service and good menu.

The meals here are fantastic. Good portion sizes, the chips are ok. But avoid the fish at all costs. These have been cooked days before hand. Then left on show, and re-heated when asked for.Be aware if you go here try and phone your order through. As the Dolphin gets very busy, for a good reason. As I said earlier, the meals are very good regardless of what you buy. to give an idea on portion size. We bought a banquet for 2. This fed 4 adults and a child, with food left over.
