Divan Khanah in Sunderland

Absolutely awful. Salad was old wilted and brown. Curry watery and nan soggy. This used to be THE curry house in Washington but it was beyond poor.

Diva Khanah has been, in my opinion, the best Indian takeaway in Washington for years. Not only is the flavour amazing, I've posted a photo here to give an idea of portion size. They are the only takeaway I've come across that uses the same size cartons for rice as the main curry dish but, don't worry, as you can see from the photo the portions of chicken are incredibly generous too. This is a Chicken Vindaloo with Mushroom Pilau. Outstanding takeaway, wouldn't go anywhere else in Washington. Update 20/08/24: Amazing. Divan Khanah has been our first choice Indian in Washington for 20+ years now and they still excel. I can only review on our preferred dishes but the Phal and Balti are sublime. When you finish your Phal and are talking about flavour rather than just heat then they're doing something right. If I'm being picky, the cost of living crisis has meant there is less chicken than in my previous review but still plenty, and be aware they now close at 22:30;so don't get caught out as we were last week. Turned out to be worth the wait though. Oh, and the return of their sister takeaway 'Divanos' is exciting. Used to love their curry pizzas but frustrated thr hottest was only madras, bit new menu seems to have the full range of curry varieties so will be trying very soon!

Only waited 20 minutes but the food tasted like it was warmed up and not fresh i rang and asked ,he said it was fresh i dnt usally complain but i spent 24 pound and all i got off him was OK

Refused to swap an item on an order, claimed it was already cooked. I called five times and the call was not answered prior to this. Refused to cancel the order over the phone. Lead to dispute with credit card company. Website chat function also failed. Appalling service

One of the best biryani in UK. Very spicy and tasty. A must try!

They can’t make a simple butter chicken I’ve never seen it look like this before. They are also very cheap and put two pieces of chicken in it.. watery too. AVOID

Tried a curry from here and it was excellent.Will make this my local takeaway from now on.

Walked in to make an order asked fir a vegetarian vinaloo curry and boiled rice after getting home found it to ve a chicken vinaloo to my disgust rang them up to them insisting I had orderd a chicken vinaloo pray tell me why would I order meat 🍖 when I've even a vegetarian for the last 10 year's

First time ordering after living here for 6 months, We are still trying things out, ordered on the food hub app, collected 15 minutes later, food was first class, way to much for 2 of us, so some saved for another day 😀 This place we will definitely be using again 😀

I agree with last post. We order all time from here so hard to write this. Tonight the food was disgusting, my kebab starter was days old, chips everything just did not seem to standard, this has put me off altogether, I've always give benefit of doubt , but tonight as in not ate it all , not even touched most of it

this is a hard one to report an issue with as we have ordered from these before many of times and every other time its been absolutely amazing however this time the food was really bad chips were dry like over cooked the chicken was very dry and the nann bread was burnt underneath this is very unusual as normally this restaurant is real good Quality not sure if they have changed the chef

The starter was good , the sauce with my main was not consistent! I ordered chips as a side and got roast potatoes! First time I used these and I won't be again

That was possibly the best takeaway I’ve had. Chicken Madras, this was excellent. NOT just all heat and no flavour. It was really tasty and the wife and Son loved there dishes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Food was absolutely lovely but I think £24 for two curry rice 1 nan bread pompadoms is bit expensive for a pick up take away

been using this place for years very disappointed in last 2 curry's from here last one on Monday night was poor very poor curry had no heat usually quite hot rice tasteless... chips undercooked... Food was warm might have to try other establishments very disappointed

The worst curries I've ever tasted one was full of mushrooms with very little chicken and the other meal was full of onions the nan bread was undercooked and very doughy awful will not be going back

Disappointingly meagre portion of chicken (three small cubes!) served with the chicken madras. We called the restaurant to complain only to be told "there's nothing we can do, the manager is not here". Shan't be ordering again.

Ordered online - quoted ready in 30 minutes. Arrived to collect after 20 minutes. Stone cold, tasteless. All had to be reheated in microwave. Overall very disappointing and won’t be buying again.

Visited in May for lunch and we did enjoy food but service was slow. I hope next time we go there for meal they will improve it.

Again had another meal from here tonight. They haven't shut down they have moved to elswick road on Armstrong ind estate . Can't wait for their new restaurant to open in concord

The Divan Khanah is no longer here, the building has been demolished.The whole area has been cleared for a new development.

Have always had excellent Indian food here, only slight negative is the location and somewhat cold interior. Perhaps should go more often in the Summer!

Have ordered from here a few times, and the staff are always polite. The food is really good and is always delivered nice and hot. Definatley a place to go for a take away if you dont want to visit a resteraunt.

we've only had a takeaway from this restaurant but its the only Indian takeaway we order from now, we have tried others in Washington but by far the food from this restaurant is the tastiest and best value for money.

Flavoursome, gorgeous, tasty food.... bit too many options on menu but if you know what you want, it's LUSH!!!

My husband and I have eaten here several times over the last few years and the food is consistently of a good standard. The curries are delish and well worth every penny!

The food is well cooked and spiced but about 30% of each main dish is onions. This takes away the pleasure of good food as you have to pile it all on one side.

My partner and I have been eating here for approx 10 years now- we have both takeaway and sit down meals and have never been disappointed. Sit down meals are really handy for when you fancy something different as staff will talk about what your tastes are and recommend dishes to suit or request slight changes to dishes to suit your preferences. We've ate at plenty of other Indian restaurants and out of all we've tried in the area (Washington/ Newcastle/ Sunderland) we would choose this restaurant over all of the others every time :)

We travel a good distance for this restaurant! The food is the best Indian food I have tasted and the staff so knowledgeable and helpful! It is a real gem!

Since this restaurant opened I haven't eaten at another Indian restaurant in Washington. Divan Khanah offers a fine menu of quality food, eat in or takeaway, at consistently competitive prices. Don't bother going anywhere else in Washington for Indian food.

Have to agree with previous comment, we have been visiting this restaurant now for 6 years+ and have never had a disappointing meal.Staff are very friendly and accommodating always happy to discuss the menu and recommendations based on personal choice and previous dished we have liked.Hope this continues as its great having this restaurant within walking distance from home, ideal for a take-away also if wanting a night in

This review is really a review spread over fourteen years of eating in or having take always from Divan Khanah.Such locality is based on the consistent quality of food and the warm and friendly service from all the staff. I have never had a disappointing meal in all of this time.
