Dick Turpin in Basildon

Absolutely gutted this has shut for good! Been drinking here on and off for 17 years. Staff come and go with new ideas and new rules but at the end of the day the regulars make it good along with a mixture of your desirables next door, some with whom I've enjoyed a few drinks with and some the current staff kept in check!! Will miss the bike nights and all the car meets!!! Such a shame the legendary Harrow pub, we all now know as the Dick Turpin, has come to an end! Yet another great British pub moving on for cash reasons. I'm really disappointed with Greene King. It's sad to drive past now to see it boarded up with concrete blocks on the perimeter, making it look like a prison! I hope this is a painless transition....thanks to all the accommodating staff that are now looking for work. 😓

Nice place for food bit empty but carvery was very good today. Main kitchen was not open but we only wanted carvery thank you Millie

5 of us visited today 26th May at 2.30pm. Between the table we had Beef, Gammon and Turkey, the beef was so over cooked it was impossible to chew. The Turkey was dry and tasteless. The gammon was very fatty. The vegetables were so over cooked they were mushy. They had run out of stuffing, we had to wait for roast potatoes. There was only 1 person behind the bar serving drinks and taking food orders. 2 people at my table decided to order a desert (mainly because they were still hungry, because their dinner was inedible) which took 30 minutes to arrive. The fudge cake was so over microwaved it was hard. Both deserts had a thimble of custard. We had to remove our own dirty plates from the table, as no one seemed to be doing that. By the time we left at 3.45 there were only 3 tables with diners. That is never heard of in a Carvery on a Sunday. It must because everyone knows the food and service is so terrible. Another diner brought his carvery back, stating how horrible it was and ordered from the main menu instead. I absolutely would not return to this establishment if they paid me to eat there.

Excellent food and service the cost is very good. We go many times for our carvery. Staff very friendly and helpful. Carvery is the best in area, our friends come from Aveley to have the carvery with us as they enjoy it very much

Go for bike night on a Tuesday. Staff friendly, food cheap, and if you choose something like a burger good to eat. The building itself just kinda feels a little bland inside.

Omg this is the best place for a carvery staff so friendly and always happy Place is always clean and tidy would 100% recommend to family and friends Thanks again to all bar food and service staff

Liked this very much. Was the ideal place for the car meet up. Next time will go earlier and try the food which smelled delicious.

James and his staff are very welcoming and can do enough to make your visit to the dick turping a good experience the food is very nice and we will be coming back very soon

Great price at £7.99. Meat was flavoursome and succulent, especially the beef. Vegetables were perfect, and there was a great choice. All I all, good value, with very friendly staff.

Really bad experience, tbf I would never go back while I was up the bar my mum was sat at the table and could here the staff swearing at each other coming from the kitchen. Let us order our food and when it came out there was bits missing and the food was rubbish really really poor! Never would I eat in there again

A mothers day trip to The Dick Turpin. Greeted at the door and shown to our table. The carvery was excellent. Very tender gammon as was the turkey. The quite large Yorkshires were very light, really nice. Service was second to none, all the staff are friendly and polite. I can't praise the place enough. Highly recommend it.

Good food and reasonably priced, very busy being a Sunday. The Carvery food looked great, I'll have to try that next time I visit. UPDATE, had the carvery today, the 3 meats (beef, turkey and gammon) were very nice and there is a great selection of vegetables. Loved it!

First time visit after a recommendation , Absolutely loved the carvery , lots of meat fresh and hot , lots of vegetable choices equally as fresh and nice , service was excellent , the whole place is spotless tables all clean , was a quiet time but a lovely n warm welcoming non the less . We now prefer this to another well known carvery chain beginning with T , but we will go here instead, plates were cleared quickly and a friendly “ how was your meal “ asked , and she got told fabulous we loved it . Will definitely return ,,over n over again 10/10 for me !

The dick turpin has a great carvery, the staff are very friendly in particular Millie who always takes that extra step to make sure we are satisfied with the service, everything is always 100% perfect!

We have just been to dick turpin again and was greeted by a friendly young man who was very welcoming,we had booked but was early and we ordered the carvery,the bar staff was also lovely and friendly,we had the carvery which was lovely the only thing was as it was later and carvery was closing down the veg was a bit dry but we expected that as it was nearly closing,but it was still very tasty and we will be back earlier next time.

We came here on Sunday for a carvery and we was so pleased the staff were friendly the food was delicious and lots of lovely vegetables we was well impressed we are booking up again

A great place to eat and a good price

The food took 50 minutes to arrive even though there were no other dinners at the time. The cheese and bacon burger one burger was burnt the other was pink inside, the kids mash was not real mash it tasted powdery and had black bits in it which looked like it had been scrapped off the floor- the k8ds never ate anyof it, the carrot sticks were not carrot sticks they were dried out carrots cut in quarters still had half the skin on, the chips were hard. The play area was just dumped in what was an old seating area with the seats still along the back wall. It was never like this a few years back but we will not go back again, very dissapointed.

No service from staff, was not told to purchase a ticket from the bar for the carvey, very poor service, carvery was below standard, no atmosphere, will not be returning or recommending

I never like to complain, but. The service was so slow considering we were the only table eating and there wasn't many drinkers in. 2 adults and 2 children. Starters took 45 mins to arrive. We weren't checked on once we got the food. Then the mains took another 30mins to come out (still only us eating) I had a mixed grill, the egg was very undercooked. The burger my partner had was as hard as a rock. So all in all a terrible experience, the mix grill was refunded I may add.

Arrived at the Turpin and parked in the very large carpark. Greeted at the door and shown to our table. The same excellent service as we have come to expect. Food was really good, very succulent turkey, as if I didn't have enough over Christmas. Due to the standards being so good, this is the only carvery we use. They also have a nice selection of Greene King beers.

Booked in the week for Sunday carvery Phoned us while on way to say there were no carvery as meat had run out. . . It's Sunday. . . You do a Sunday carvery?! You make sure there's enough surely. Anyway decided to go and ear from main menu. Fries over cooked and cold, burger cold and too pink for my liking. Very loud staff member messing around on her break, jumping up and down & shouting Sorry won't be coming back

Always go here as a big group of family and friends, with children (they love the little play area) staff are always lovely and can't do enough for you. Carvery is lovely too. Great job Dick Turpin

An amazing place, food was delicious, warm cosy feeling and lovely atmosphere, so well priced and waitresses/ staff were amazing & friendly! Our waitress Cheryl was so attentive and made sure everything was ok throughout our meal, food was lovely and hot, lovely portion sizes, we will be back!

So disappointed with the food here. We came in at 4.30, so not too late for food. We ordered a selection of starters and different mains and carvery. The carvery only had a very sad burnt small piece of beef left. The potatoes were swimming in oil and could bang nails into the wall. The veg was dry and old. The rest of the food was no better. All the meat was overcooked, or should I say cooked and reheated. Also the nachos were fried!!! Who fries nachos?? The drinks were ok.

Waited all week in anticipation for what they claimed was a 'mouth watering carvery' to be very disappointed. Cooked tasteless frozen potatoes, overcooked sprouts and carrots, tough beef, with no fresh veg on offer at all. Won't be returning and cannot recommend

Came here with friends for something to eat, I had a carvery,they had steaks. Only one meat was available on carvery but the veg was nice enough. Cheryl was a lovely host and as welcoming.

As I was in the area, I decided to pop if for a drink and food. Nice pub, family friendly, has a sift play area for younger kids, plenty of parking. Staff welcoming and not much of a wait for the food.

Can honestly say its one of the best carverys I've had in a long time. No skrimping on the meats and you can have all of them if you want them. Will definitely be going back.

We went here last Sunday. As always food was hot well cooked. Staff welcoming and helpful. Facility's clean no sticky tables. Would highly recommend little gem of a food pub.

Well it says the best Carvery in Essex. It's not by far and the service was non existent. Maybe we went on one of those bad days but we wouldn't return again.

The food was very nice and the customer service was great would recommend booking parking was also very near the front and good for my Nan as she is disabled

The place is ok. Just don't eat there. The food is all microwaved and under cooked. Its a Shame as the food used to be nice.

Wont be going back its really gone down hill been coming here for years so dissapointing to see how run down it is the food is terrible i wouldnt even feed it to the bin everything deep fried that leaves awful taste in your mouth stick to the carvery seems a bit more fresher do not order off the menu kids play area grubby small and dirty also dangerous with ripped netting broken and loose boards the whole place could do with some TLC and a makeover to bring it back to life and decent food to get the custom back in there only seems good for a drink on the bike nights real sad whats happening to our old pubs it could be a lovely restaurant / pub again i hate leaving negative reviews but just feel this one deserves it

Ordered from the app at the table. Food came fine after a possible issue with mac and cheese supply but worked out fine in the end. Drinks took a While but I general good.

Great cavery hood value for money

Popped in again last Saturday around 1 with my brother. The carvery was stunning couldn’t recommend it more the roast potatoes were incredible. The service at the bar and carvery deck was lovely the staff were very kind and welcoming as always.
