Destinations is the restaurant at the St. Georges Way Holiday Inn. The hotel was a bit below par and so we were not expecting much from the restaurant...how wrong were we. My chicken and chorizo in a spicy tomato sauce with rice and salad was excellent and my wife's trout scored the same. Service was good too.

We had lunch here today with our daughter and two granddaughters. Although the restaurant was beginning to fill up with office Christmas lunch people, service was excellent and timely. We ate off the a la cartel menu, our granddaughters both found dishes they liked and we had some of the best scampi and chips I’ve had in a long while: succulent large pieces of fish and piping hot chips, not over salted. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in tubs were offered free “as it’s Christmas”, coffee was also good. Altogether a very good experience.

We were staying at the hotel so opted to eat in the restaurant and glad we did,I have to eat gluten free and was able to have a seekh kebab to start and a Thai green chicken curry for my main. My husband had a meat board and a kangaroo steak and really enjoyed them. They gifted us with slice of cheesecake as it was our anniversary, the staff went to the trouble to ensure that it was gluten free. The were excellent throughout the evening.

In short . . .this is your average hotel chain food. The food was of an average standard, it is over priced for what it is. But, that seems to be standard in the UK. My burger was good, cannot complain it hit the spot. The Mrs Hunter chicken, was not great. No BBQ sauce. The breakfast in the hotel is of a average standard. Full English and continental. Again the food was a good quality if not over priced. Staff very friendly.

We visited not long after they opened, lured in by the special offer of 3 courses for £19.95. However, once we were sat down at our table we were given a printed A4 sheet of paper with a typed menu which was nothing like the once advertised all over their website. We asked the staff about this and the reply was, this is the menu we have tonight. Not very impressed to say the least.

I only ate at this restaurant as I was booked into the Holiday Inn for an overnight stay and did not fancy going out after a long day at work but I don't think I will be eating here again.Words fail me to describe the waiting staff... no food knowledge, no food service or communication skills and certainly no customer service skills. Makes me wonder how the hotel recruits its staff and if they receive training to do their job.Drinks are overpriced (i know you show as 4 star hotel but you really are not!)The food was ok - I had the swordfish steak with olive mash. The mash was lukewarm at best but the swordfish was nicely cooked and I enjoyed the capers in the sauce. Price at £15 was also acceptable but do feel that at least one vegetable should have been included in the price.I had the pecan pie for dessert .. the serving was very small indeed. Price if I rememer right was £5.95

Had a nice lunch - simple sandwich and salad in the bar. Opened a tab, for which they took our debit card away and kept it for the whole meal - most restaurants just take a swipe and return - this made us feel very uneasy. Took about 30 mins to pay the bill and get our card back as no one was working on the bar.

We have only experienced breakfasts but the quality and freshness of food is excellent. However our table service jugs of coffee was less than hot and on our third morning coffee and tea was self service from pump type vacuum flasks (as Premier Inn or Travelodge!), giving need for a walk across the restaurant for a refill, partway through a hot meal.

Whilst staying in the hotel on business as I do regularly I decided not to venture into town but give the restaurant another chance since my last disappointing visit. I ate in the bar from the restaurant menu and ordered the 12oz rump steak with chunky chips (4 pounds extra if ordered separately). The waitress brought the food within ten minutes, I asked for some French mustard to be told if they are not in the satchets on the table ask the guy at the bar, when paying nearly £20 for a steak in a four star hotel I would normally expect better service, I therefore left my food to wait for the sole barman to become free for him to inform me that he didn't have any. I returned to my dinner, unfortunately since I had gone to the bar for a few minutes my plate now looked like an assassination had happened, as a keen cook at home I know when cooking steak it needs to rest after cooking, the chef here had clearly forgotten this resulting in a plate covered in blood and juice soaking into my aforementioned "3 way cook" frozen chunky chips that anyone can purchase from Iceland. This is the second time I have eaten in this restaurant, and if I stay here again (most likely will try another hotel in the area in future) I can safely say I shall not be paying the extortionate prices for the poor service and food this establishment offers. You would get a better meal and service in the local weatherspoons for half the price.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

The Destinations Bar and Restaurant is part of the Holiday Inn in Stevenage and I have eaten many times here but that is because I have stayed in the hotel more times than I care to think about. It is a typical Holiday Inn restaurant, i.e. it is high priced for the quality of the food but it is convenient if you are staying in the hotel and don't fancy walking across the town for somewhere better value. The Bar menu is different from the Restaurant menu and from my experience you can have either in either location as long as you ask. The food is much akin to the quality you would get in a standard chain pub, albeit presented a bit more professionally along with waitresses and table service. I would estimate you are paying a good 100%+ premium for the presentation and "environment". For example, a chicken breast with tomato, a few rocket leaves and a side of chips would be £15 in the restaurant but in a pub the same meal in a larger portion would be at most £7.Food quality and portion sizes can be a bit hit and miss, I have regularly had the 8oz chicken breast but this has appeared in multiple portion sizes (from what I would estimate is 8oz to about 4oz mostly towards the lower end based on cooking chicken breasts at home where I have known the weights before cooking). On more than one occasion the chicken breast has been quite dry which would suggest that either it has sat on the pass under a heat lamp for a while before coming out to the table, the chef is nervous of chicken or they just haven't taken enough care. Overall the selection on the main menu is varied and the Kangaroo steak is one of my favourites although I have found that it only every reaches you exactly how you want it on about 50% of occasions, I like my meat medium rare and I have had it arrive anywhere between the blue side of rare to medium/well done.If you are a hotel regular there is always a soup of the day and a special of the day to introduce variety. The soups are often quite tasty and come with a small dinner roll (which I am guessing is part baked and finished in the kitchen). You never quite feel that the chef's are given much leeway to create when it comes to the special as it is usually a mix of the other things on the menu e.g. a chicken breast in a brioche bun with BBQ sauce and cheese. I tend to get the feeling that this is more about using up extras rather than the chef's exercising creativity in the kitchen. On the restaurant menu the nicest puddings I've had (and the be fair the only one that I feel is worth having a second time) is the vanilla pannacotta. When it arrives it looks really nice with flecks of vanilla seeds on the pannacotta, however the seeds are only ever on the outside and never in the pannacotta itself which is rather odd and suggests the seeds are not actually part of the pannacotta and you wonder whether it is really vanilla in there at all. Personally I would recommend ignoring the restaurant menu for pudding and asking for the chocolate brownie from the bar menu. The staff are always pleasant and service is always acceptable, although can occasionally be a bit slow if they are busy and you arrive just after a large group.

Having eaten earlier, my wife and I wanted just a snack on the first evening, but the two sandwiches, both delicious, were so generous we could have shared one.On the second evening, being Christmas Day and the hotel not very full, the Destinations Restaurant was closed but the full restaurant menu was available in the Bar. I warned the waiter I like my steak extremely rare, but when it arrived overcooked for my taste I received an immediate apology and replacement steak cooking to my liking. The breakfast offered a wide choice of hot and cold items, with a help yourself all-you-can-eat buffet; unusually the fried eggs were cooked to order and brought to your table.

Had dinner here two nights running as it was included in my room rate. The quality of the food was surprisingly good and the service excellent. Beer selection is very poor if you like your ales; ie Boddies or nothing.

Popped in for a meal a while ago now. They were running a twos company offer for £25. For that you basically get 2 courses and a bottle of wine for £25, all in. Great value. The food is fromThe set menu but the lovely waitress informed us that the dishes were taken from the a la carte menu. The soup was fantastic and the Seabass was the best I've had in a long time. Ignore the previous two reviewers, I think they must of had a bad day or something because my wife and I were very well looked after. Thank you guys for a lovely meal.

We came to the Fisherman for a birthday celebration and our lunch was excellent. Our guest had been before but we hadn’t and Reanna went out of her way to look after us, giving us very good advice on our choices from the menu. We’ve already advised family and friends to book tables at the Fisherman and we look forward to our next visit.

We go to the Old Forge every few weeks. It is the place we choose by default when we decide to eat out without planning. We like the place and the atmosphere and the children are not complaining of the food. The portions are generous and the prices are adequate. The only issue is that it can be crowded, on weekends there is a waiting queue for the roast meat. If you go on Saturday afternoon or Sunday it is better to make a reservation at least half a day in advance.
