Coming from Glasgow we try to walk our dog on Troon beach whenever we can get the time. After a walk we always head to the beer garden. We’ve been popping in for 4 or 5 years now, it’s a fantastic wee pub with a great beer garden and great staff. Always ends a trip to Troon on a positive note. We’ll be back 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Never been in before, a lovely bar the landlord and staff were so polite and friendly. The beer was exceptional so was the food. The bar was spotlessly clean, and the prices were very reasonable. Boy oh boy where to even start with this wee Gem, James and his wife will make your visit more than inviting in by far the best most welcoming wee pub in the town. An outstanding beer garden with great food at an even better price it’s fair to say that this little family run establishment is ticking all the boxes. There’s no floor creaking silence in McKays, but instead you’re met with the sound of welcoming chatter and people having a downright good time at any time of the day, if you’re ever in Troon, either visiting or a member of the community be sure to put this place on your list, from front to back, inside to out McKays accommodates for everyone.

Enticed by a beer garden on a sunny day and restrictions due to COVID 19 only allowing alcohol to be served outside we entered Dan McKays. Our welcome was warm and friendly, staff were taking all safety precautions and “rules” were explained. The small traditional pub opened onto a large walked beer garden, which was really busy. The pub had enticed everyone including families and dogs. Staff never stopped and were attentive and very friendly. Wine was delicious and sandwiches were really fresh and tasty. Menu was simple but but presented well and something for everyone. Prices were fair. Toilets were spotlessly clean. Look forward to returning to this “secret” beer garden and would recommend to anyone heading to Troon.

My wife & I popped into McKays last night for dinner. We were greeted by the very friendly Denise who told us the the kitchen had just closed. We were about to head off elsewhere for food when she advised that they could get the kitchen reopened and she took our order. All this was done with real customer care attitude and a friendly smile. A short while later we were tucking into fish n chips and steak pie, both of which were delicious. Others have mentioned in previous reports of the fantastic service given by owners James and Denise, they are not exaggerating. As well as chatting away with us we saw the owners share plenty of chat and laughs with all other customers. Absolutely blown away by the fantastic warmth and hospitality of these top hosts. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome, at one point the barmaid and owner of the place actually brought our drinks to the table. For a yankee, their bacon is a little different. The odd thing I noticed throughout my stay in Scotland is that while the staff will continue to check on you, if you want your bill to pay and leave, you do have to ask for it. Unlike in North America, they won't just try to give you your bill and turn the table.

After a big of wandering (actually looking for another place on trip adviser...) we stumbled upon Dan McKay's and thought we could give it a go. We had two children (aged 5 and 9) and two dogs. The dogs were welcome in the garden - which is always a bonus! Within a couple of minutes a bowl of water was brought out for the dogs - we were beginning to think we had struck gold! A few local ales on offer too (another tick!) We ordered food - very nice burgers - which came quickly. The portions were big enough without being ridiculous. The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming too.We were very pleased with our visit. Why only 4.5 out of 5? Toilets were a little dark and dingy. Stopped in to Dan McKays after work for a drink with a friend. Saw other people being served what looked liked really nice pub grub so we decided to eat there too. My pal had a cheeseburger which was really, really good and served with a lovely big portion of chips and salad bowl. I had a starter and side dish of onion rings. The starter dish of chicken strips (tempura) would have rivalled the tempura served in Scotts and was more like a main course. The side of onion rings was enough for two people. Would recommend anyone to try it. The owners James and wife Denise are always friendly and welcoming to locals and visitors alike and the pub has the best beer garden in Troon (and weans and dugs are welcomed there too). Short visit to Troon. Visited this bar and full of locals. All good for custom though. Would have left and never returned as we felt left out apart from being asked if we'd like another drink but the barman did make an effort, eventually, to speak to us so we returned for a second visit. The place was deservedly very busy on a Saturday between 4 and 8 and again the owner/barman spoke to us and remembered us before leaving for a much deserved night off. It's the little things. Thank you and we will be back. Having owned a pub ourselves though, it's not easy pleasing everyone. Well done.

I went here specifically because of the 'dog friendly' reviews - however dogs are only allowed in the beer garden, meaning that you have to sit shivering in the cold if you have a dog with you. Fine if you have a tail and a fur coat but not so great for us human companions. It really confuses my why food and drink venues in (say) the west end of Glasgow are so dog friendly, but outside of Glasgow places get a lot more hostile... is it a country thing??NB: The only truly dog friendly pub we found in Troon was the Harbour Inn - very friendly and the owner gave our dog treats and water.

Warm welcome from the owner/staff and good beer/lager and traditional pub grub. The Twisted and Bitter was just the right temperature.

Stood at the bar for a good five mins whilst the barman continued his conversation with a customer, even though he was aware of me standing there with a ten pound note in my hand,so, we just left him to it and went elsewhere.Their loss, not ours.We wont be back again!

Love this place for a quick pint or some food. Prices are very reasonable too and there is always a friendly face behind the bar. He has done a lot of work on the beer garden too which on a sunny day has the best atmosphere in the whole town!Highly recommend it!

Great pub! Great staff! Great atmosphere and Great food! Steak nights are NOT to be missed. Has the largest, cleanest beer garden I have ever seen. Brilliantly, family run pub/diner.

This pub has a really nice, large, grassy beer garden and a good atmosphere and most definitely a place where you could be in your own wee world here. Inside is nice too with a welcoming feel to the place. Give it a try and see for yourself. It does food too though have not tried it yet as was too busy holding my wine glass while soaking up the sunshine.Be back the next sunny day......erm well it is Scotland after all so could be a while!

I visited the bar and restaurant with my gran and my dog on a nice sunny day, with the intention to eat food in the beer garden. When enterig yhe premises there were no signs to tell if the pub was dog friendly. Whilst holding the door open for my gran to enter with a rollator a lady was tryig to tell me to only enter through the side door with dogs, but it was ok and just to walk through and that they are "dog friendly". We sat down at a picnic table, let the dog off the lead and looked over the menu. Once ordered a lovely gentleman said hello, chatted about the dog and gave us our cutlery. When the lady approached us with food she told us to put the dog on the lead because dogs arent well behaved. The food was lovely and came very quickly. The table opposite us had a young girl playing in the garden and was told by the lady working to stop playing with the stones. It is a nice establishment, however the unwelcome feeling from the lady deffinately ruins what would be a good atmosphere. Probabaly wont be back- have been advised to try another local pub with a beer garden and is actually "dog friendly".

Went on a small adventure to Coylton Arms Inn. I have to say we will be back, the food is very good, a well seasoned lasagna with plenty of herbs, nice béchamel sauce and a good salad and french fries. The only small criticism was the lack of staff which made the wait slightly longer than necessary. The staff themselves were extremely welcoming and the ambiance was charming without being twee. Portion size was good without being excessive. All in all an enjoyable experience that I would recommend for a pub lunch.

This was a masterclass from the second we walked through the door. Young guy at the counter was just the right level of friendly and was so welcoming. I'm picky with food and coffee but this was outstandingly perfect.
