We have been twice now and felt the need to write a review as a way to help them make the slight changes necessary to match the great food. It’s such a shame as the Cross Foxes has so much potential. When you walk in there is a scruffy table full of wires and you don’t know where you’re supposed to stand. The first greeting is always by a harassed looking member of staff. The layout is nice ish, but yet again has potential, the decor doesn’t match the pub - old stone walls, beautiful windows and stone floor, but this is matched with silver cushions and pictures of boats and the sea?! We were put into the back room where the staff constantly come in and out of the back door and shout and laugh and throw cutlery into a large box. The noise was ridiculous and not conducive ambience to somebody sat eating a meal that is costing over £60!! The staff attempt to be really nice, but they don’t understand the basics of creating a welcoming environment that people want to go back to. There is another table ‘full of junk’ at the other end of the bar. Can’t you just tidy everywhere up? And not just tidy up the bits but also tidy up the staff, they need support and there needs to be a logical way of running the business. It’s such a shame that the staff and decor don’t compliment the great food. Food is faultless and it deserves to be served where diners can enjoy it, not listening to waiting on staff laughing, swearing and throwing cutlery about!

Turned up for lunch and were given menus to browse. Barman said they would come and get order. Cutlery and napkins were dropped off and the waitress quickly left. After 10 minutes no contact was made. A group turned up, arriving in porches, Lamborghini's etc. They were promptly seated offered water and drink orders were taken, still no one approached us. After another 15 minutes with no acknowledgement we left. Service is paramount to running this type of establishment and there was no excuse for the way we were treated.

They charged me £28 for Welsh lamb and one black coffee; the 2 lamb slices were the size of beef burgers, the veg was literally one hand full and a pittance of roast potatoes; served luke warm on a cold plate. Please see my photo (the big lump is yorkshire pudding, which they asked me if I'd like some, then slyly charged me an extra £1.50 for). Go elsewhere; I was too tired from driving and shocked to demand my money back and then find an alternative. I love Wales, it's image doesn't need tarnishing like this! "Croeso y Cymru" my backside

Went for dinner with no reservation at 5.25pm, two adults and 1yr old. Saturday on Easter weekend, so very busy. Firstly, was waiting at the bar to be acknowledged for 5 mins. They were really busy. Phone rings and girl answers it taking a reservation for a table for two in five minutes time before seeing to us. Luckily they were able to squeeze us in. Waitress took us to the table and was quick to walk off. Managed to ask her for a high chair before she left, but she said there wasn't any free and left it at that. I asked another waitress who seemed more competent. But she told us the table didn't accomodate a high chair (not sure why really, there was enough room) and she said she'd find us another table and when a high chair becomes available we'd get it. 30 mins later, I went for a wander round and found a spare high chair. I was really confused, did they expect us to hold our baby throughout our meals... Why did they sit us at a table for two when I was clearly holding a wriggly annoying baby. We looked around and there were kids that could have easily sat in normal seats using highchairs, and some being unused at people's tables. Once we'd gotten the chair, there was no acknowledgement that we'd been forgotten about. On top of this, the food took over an hour from being sat at our new seat. The food was okay. Clearly used good quality ingredients but was very rich. However, kid's meal (pizza flatbread) was very poor value for money. No one came to ask us how our meals were, and I had to go to the bar to order another drink. I understand that it was very busy, but I think a good restaurant should be able to cope with the number of tables it has. If you can't, then reduce your capacity. Overall, I didn't think the service was very competent or friendly (it was not unpleasant, but not friendly). 2 stars for service, 3 for food. But bad service can ruin any meal, so 2 stars overall.

Didn't stay but stopped for lunch. Had high hopes having had lunch here before, but was very disappointed. The place was pretty quiet (one other couple in the restaurant who hadn't even ordered). We ordered two burgers and after a nearly 40 minute wait got two massively overcooked lumps of mince in equally burnt burger buns with a comically small serving of coleslaw and some chips (Chips were OK). The burgers were inedible and when we complained they offered to take them back and replace them. Given we'd waited 40 minutes in the first place we weren't keen on waiting further. Staff apologised, but there was no offer of a reduction in the bill. Turns out waiting for them to cremate some more burgers was the only option.

We booked a table for a group of 11, arranging it the evening before for a 3:00 PM reservation. After hiking Cader Idris, we called the restaurant around 2:30 to let them know we were running about 30 minutes late. They assured us it wasn’t an issue and confirmed the table was secured until 5:15 PM. We arrived at 3:39 PM and were met with immediate attitude from the staff after apologising for being late. They questioned how many people in our group had arrived, what the dishes were, and informed us that the food had already been prepared. When one of us asked how long we had at the table, they said an hour and a half, to which we replied that this should be sufficient. The staff member then reiterated that the food was already prepped and sitting on the pass. This raised concerns for us, as several of us have extensive experience in hospitality, and we’ve never encountered a practice where food is cooked before guests even arrive, even if they’re late. When one of our group pointed this out, the staff member curtly responded, “This is how we do it, so you can leave,” and proceeded to kick us out! Appalling attitude, appalling management. As people who understand the hospitality industry, the customer service we received was shocking and unacceptable. We won’t be returning or recommending this place to anyone. P.S. The bright pink staff uniforms? Not a great look!

Passed often but never stopped, but I wish we had sooner. We pre booked a table as it was a busy Sunday afternoon. The service was great on entry where we were able to order drinks and sit in a cosy seating area before our table was ready. The staff that helped us were fantastic very helpful and friendly, especially as we had a 2y.o who was ready for some food. The soup of the day was great, which was intended for the toddler (I had to test for temperature, or so I'm telling people) The beef brisket dinner was amazing. The meat just fell apart and the yorkie was great I would have happily paid for an extra one. I also got a chance to try the fish, which was huge and really well prepared, not too much batter. If you haven't got time for a full meal, I'd recommend the sandwiches as well. we ordered the pork sandwich, which came with some fantastic chips. I stopped short of licking the place the gravy was that good.

An awful experience from start to finish! We've eaten here before and it was lovely, so we were looking forward to returning for another meal. We were seated at a table that was sticky and covered in drink rings, but we overlooked that and continued to order food. I had ordered the 10 oz 28 day matured steak. I was a bit suprised when it arrived and the only 'trimmings' were about 12 hand cut chips, half a tomato and one small mushroom, which for £28 didn't look particularly good value for money (The blue cheese sauce I ordered was £3 extra!) When I tried to eat the steak, I found it to be extremely tough. I'm not one to complain usually, but for the money, I at least expected quality food. I told staff at the bar, who took my food back to the kitchen, only for it to be returned a few minutes later, with the steak now cut in half, and food rearranged, and a message from the chef, telling me that it was cooked just how I'd asked, medium rare (which incidentally it was, that was never in dispute) and that I'd been given the wrong knife. Perhaps I'd been given the wrong teeth too!!! I was made to feel like I had complained unnecessarily, and was not offered a replacement, or alternative. I finished what I could, and what I did eat tasted really good. However, after the worst customer service I can remember receiving, I won't be returning for a long time!

It's unfortunate as the venue, staff and surroundings are very good, but the food was really poor. Probably the worst burger we have had. The burger was so dry it just fell apart, no moisture in it at all. The chips were "flexible" not crisp. It came very quickly so seems like it was just reheated rather than cooked? Maybe this is just a one off, as previous reviews have complimented the food. Food substandard and not the cheapest so sadly wont be returning, which is a shame as it initially showed much promise.

You wait at least 45 minutes for the food. (also on the map). But not that great in taste.

What a fabulous location, just a stroll from the castle. Tea with soya milk, a draft (yes draft) Estrella Dam washing down an awesome Welsh rabbit 🙂

On a recent visit to Barmouth we found this little Gem of a place that is open on Sundays. There was a special board out side and it was the Cheese and Onion pie that drew us in . Both my husband and me had this and it came with new potatoes and salad . It was delicious and very reasonably priced . We were naughty and were too tempted by the delicious homemade sweets and puds they had to offer . I had the jam and coconut cake and my husband opted for the apple pie. They were presented lovely with fruit and a pot of cream on the side. The staff were friendly and attentive. Will definitely be returning next time we are in Barmouth
